The Iyengar Bakery is an integral part of Bengaluru’s culinary landscape. Located in almost every neighbourhood of the city, these traditional bakeries date back to the turn of the last century when two Iyengar brothers from the Ashtagrama (a cluster of eight villages) area in Hassan made their way to Bengaluru in search of livelihoods, and built on the legacy of British bakeries with their own customs and flavours. Over the years, more from the community followed in their footsteps, a trend exacerbated by the famine of the 50s which rendered agriculture in the villages unviable, leading to the rapid growth of Iyengar bakeries in Bengaluru, Mysuru and elsewhere in the South. In this episode, I visit Sri Jayalakshmi Bakery, a 60-year old bakery that though rooted in its traditions has made space to evolve with the times. Needless to say, I also taste many of the calorie-laden but deliciously addictive goodies that have built for these time-honoured establishments a loyal fan following over the years. Hope you enjoy this one, stay safe and happy eating!
Benne (butter) Biscuit
The sort of cookie that’s crumbly, fragile and almost melts in the mouth.
Rs. 30 (usd 0.4) per 100 gm
8/10
Vegetable Puff
Bite into the airy crunch of layers of pastry that traps within its folds a flavourful vegetable stuffing. A popular snack anytime of the day.
Rs. 25 (usd 0.3)
8/10
Egg Puff
One you get past the airy crunch of the pastry layers, you taste the creamy egg bhurji that's fortified with half a boiled egg. Reason why these outsell the vegetable puff in a traditionally vegetarian establishment.
Rs. 25 (usd 0.3)
9/10
Khara Bun
A generous hit of curry leaf and green chilli in a spice mix stains this popular bun a yellowish green and also gives it a spicy bite. The savoury notes of toasted onions and a smidgen of sugar rounds off the flavours on the palate.
Rs. 15 (usd 0.2)
9/10
Aloo Bun Congress
Picture a soft bun stuffed with a creamy, lightly tempered potato mash. Slice it open and slather on a generous helping of spiced peanuts. That’s the ABC for you. Soft and creamy with the toasty, spicy crunch of peanuts, delicious down to the last bite.
Rs. 30 (usd 0.4)
9/10
Bun Butter Jam
A sweet, raisin speckled bun sandwich slathered with salted butter and Sri Jayalakshmi’s homemade mixed fruit jam, on the palate it evokes memories of a comforting bread, butter jam sandwich packed in a school snack box.
Rs. 32 (usd 0.4)
8/10
Dilpasand
Sri Jayalakshmi Bakery’s most popular sweet offering is the sort of calorie-laden indulgence that helps you get past a bad day, if you are having one.Puff pastry stuffed with freshly grated coconut, raisins, glazed cherries, tutti frutti, cashew nuts and scented with cardamom! Sweet Bliss!
Rs. 25 (usd 0.3)
10/10
Honey Cake
Another one for the sweet tooth, a butter sponge cake dipped in a sugary syrup and rolled over in desiccated coconut. The sweetness, though is cut, thankfully, by the acidity of the jam that’s smeared on top.
Rs. 25 (usd 0.3)
7/10
Almond Biscuit
The sort that breaks off in a crisp, soft, crunch.
Rs. 30 (usd 0.4) per 100 gm
8/10
Salt Biscuit
Initially, you taste almost nothing, but then you are surprised by its salty spike that makes a late appearance on the palate.
Rs. 30 (usd 0.4) per 100 gm
8/10
Khara Biscuit
Flavours of the khara bun - curry leaf, chillies, onions and jeera - but in a biscuit form.
Rs. 30 (usd 0.4) per 100 gm
8/10

I am very happy to watch this video. I belong to the family of B B Bakery, as it was my grandfather who started it and it is not Bangalore Brother's Bakery but Bangalore Brahmin's Bakery. I have grown up in this family watching my late father and my elder brother taking care of the Bakery and managing it for years.
Agustin Ritz let individuals decide what they want.

Camera man is really a hidden gem of this channel, please bring him/her along in front of camera in one of your Q&A's or videos. This new content brought me a joy to watch. This made me recall our childhood memories where we use to call it as a pups for a puff and none of us knew till we grew up and dil pasand was our all time favorite. As always very good one Sir.
भभर छछज
True ..pups 🥳
I have Visited There, When I was Writing CET Exam In 2015 at Jain College, Never Thought such A Famous Bakery with History. I assumed A Random Bakery With Good Infrastructure 😂.. but my Friend Keeps on Telling "Macha, Adu Famous Bakery Macha"

When you bite into a food your smile reveals all the respect, love and taste of that food...
Proud to be an Iyengar.
Iyengar bakeries definitely have some unique dishes.
I've been a customer of Sri Jayalakshmi Bakery for the past for the past 30 years from the Lalbagh road corner to the bigger and spacious Bake Square...fresh and wholesome goodies is their trademark ... they make the best bread ....as well as Dilpasand ...and Special raisin buns..and their masala Toast ...very happy to see them featured on food lovers... sending best wishes to the Jayalakshmi team
happy you enjoyed this episode, Kavitha. we loved the dil pasand, raisin buns too, among others. 😋
This video is nostalgic. I grew up in Tamilnadu where there was abundant Iyengar bakery. Never bothered on why they have ' Bangalore' or 'Iyengar ' in their name but always enjoyed their Veg and Egg puff, Dil pasanth, Honey cake and Cream bun. You did full justice to the bakery culture of Bangalore.
But none of them are genuine.
@JarJarBinks ..Very true.
All those items uh mentioned are my favs, butter biscuits and salt biscuits as well
you grew up in nilgiris??? because there are a lot of bangalore iyengar bakeries, and they are really good.
I just worked out for 1 hour, looking at what all you ate. Thanks for taking one for the team 😁
Any time, Arvind! 😀

Kripal, you are just fabulous.. Been your follower last 2 years.. you have an impeccable timing and control of the language. Definitely holding on to your audience! Wishing you many more laurels..
Once I took this dil pasand to Rotterdam Netherlands... To treat my friends... They enjoyed it.... Never knew in the back end.. Such an hygiene is maintained...
One of the best bakeries in South Bangalore.Proud to have known them.
I have never seen you this excited in any another videos of yours. You have a different glisten in your eyes and excitement in your voice. All of us who lived in Karnataka can relate to this, all our childhood we relished Iyengar bakery foods. This I mark as one of my favourite videos from your channel. Thanks a lot for making these videos. 🙏
They used be one in every area while growing up in Bangalore ages ago . Most were of course namesake and nothing could come close to the real ones or the legendary VB bakery . Thanks so much for covering this !
Wow.. Really miss the good old days of Bangalore.. Aloo Bun, Toast, Khara Bun, Dil Pasand and the Puffs, though simple, are a hallowed culinary tradition by themselves, and the Iyengar Bakery is a pilgrimage towards the epicurean moments of Old Bangalore.. And Food Lovers TV has captured all this beautifully - YUM
Iam customer here since 1991 ,when i used to watch movie in uravarshi theatre, we used to parcel, nice bakery
The Kannada you speak in bw is wat makes your video special...👍
Reminiscing childhood memories of eating at the Iyengar Bakeries!!
It's certainly true that an "Englishman" might not recognise the British influence on some of these tasty treats but others are definitely recognisable! For example, this Scotsman notes that the butter biscuits are akin to Scottish shortbread. Plus for any of us of a certain age the honey cake will bring back nostalgic memories of having jam and coconut sponge as part of our school meals (that said, instead of dipping in sugar syrup we tend to serve with custard which, depending on the school, may or may not have been warm!).
Ah, the famous Walkers shortbread cookies, Scotland's greatest export alongside Sean Connery and scotch. I got hooked on them for a whole year (the cookies that is) until I needed intervention. The Indian butter cookies are flakier, and tend to melt away in one's mouth. But its hard to pick a favorite between the two. Never knew the beloved honey cake also might have Scottish origins.
Scots and English got together one reason was the East India Co High paying jobs and other opportunities opened up for Scot youth in English controlled India ( Not enough English youth to fill the massive growth in colonial economy of course exploitative from Indian angle)
India united English and Scots and Welsh and Irish too
The Honey Cake reminds me of cakes that I used to have as a child in Scotland. Sponge squares, coated in jam with Coconut on the outside.
I wonder if the Scottish Regiments originally took it to India, or brought it back to Scotland? Is there any history of jam making in India?
It's the same with the Butter Biscuit, it's effectively Scottish Shortbread.
It's always good food that brings people together.
Bakery products are some how new to India. Most of the Bakery techniques have been acquired by Indians from English and Portuguese. May be honey cake and butter cookies recepies had travelled all the way from Scotland. Isnt it a small world ?
I commented saying the same thing (hadn't spotted your post!). Jam and coconut sponge is classic school dinner fare! Couldn't agree more that tasty food brings us all together.
One of the Best Bakery In bangalore, giving quality and very taste stuff, Especially Dilpasand superb BCz of Dry fruits.
Owsome bakery with Hygienic.
Are the products expensive??

This is one episode that I have been longing for. Iyengar's Bakery - The very name makes me nostalgic. There are scores of Iyengar Bakeries in every locality of Bengaluru. I too grew up enjoying the delicacies at one such bakery. I can sniff a bakery anywhere in Bengaluru. The aroma of an Iyengar Bakery is something different. I have been eating Egg and Veg Puffs, the Bread Toast, the ubiquitous 'Dil Pasand' and the Honey Cakes right from my childhood. The ones baked and sold at any Iyengar Bakery is definitely something different. This video made be so nostalgic and happy. Thanks for this awesome video.
I have been seeing all ur videos the way you enjoy each n every recipe explaining each bite you throw into ur mouth n relish it ...
Liked the Introductory Historical Note and as always the amazing range of eating places in and around Namma Ooru Bengaluru. Thank You Kripalavare.
Mr Kripal you remind me of Surendra Pal (Prajapathi Daksh) and I absolutely love how well you can describe a food’s taste. Very enticing!! And lastly when you use Kannada words in every sentence of your description - makes me feel I am not too far from home😁

Thoroughly enjoyed the show!
It deserves more views, especially the Iyengar bakery episode, this one probably will get hit with 1M views!
It did!
Such a nice video. I appreciate your efforts in showing different types of food operators. Iam a food quality manager. I always love to see the episodes which involves large scale preparations.9hrs fermentation ensures the bread spongy and pluffy. It is always ideal to buy from big Baker's as they always maintain hygiene as prerequisite. Please add some info about what kind of ingredients they select for their dishes henceforth.
Yyyy! My parents just don't let me go out 😭. Your videos are no more satisfying but they now just make me jealous!!
