    The vault shoes aren't really supposed to be more durable, they're just supposed to be closer to how original vans were made (and looked) . The pros are their more durable shoes.

      I used to believe that but mine were dead by one year of usage just like regular Vans. They became really flimsy, as if I was using a very thick sock with a rubber sole. I gotta admit, the sole was nice and very durable but the rest of the shoe was bad or maybe worse than the regular ones.

    • @hutao737
      @hutao737 4 роки тому +18

      The only issue I had with the pros was the binding tape cracking, but not to the point it was unwearable. The shoes are still alive and getting used today, 4 years after buying it.

      They are not meant to be more durable in the long term they are meant to withstand what skateboarding puts shoes through and the reinforcements aren’t in the sole, it is under the toes and sides of the feet so skaters don’t tear a hole as quickly in the shoes

    • @Jacorpes
      @Jacorpes 4 роки тому +22

      Marco Mastropietro The soles on the pros are definitely different from the normal Vans. It feels like they have a deeper tread pattern and use a slightly less sticky but more durable rubber. If you take the insole out you can see they don’t have the built in wedge at the back of the normal vans so the footbed is completely flat. They’re also pointier, the arch comes in a bit more so they fit better and the foxing comes nice and high like on the vault ones. It always takes me much longer to wear down the tread under my heel, but that’s probably down to the insole. We need to see him gut a pair in half!

      It really depends on which vault model I worked at vans and I will only wear vault shoes most of the time you can find them on sale for the same price as regulars and an 8 hour day in regular vans and an 8 hour day in vaults make a huge difference there's also variations he chose just basic vaults the colab ones there's a massive difference in quality you can feel it instantly

    • @MovieGuy666

    • @vespernight4236

      @@MovieGuy666 I like them bc they're nice looking and cheap enough for popular sneakers. I live in my vans during the summer. My family does lots of gardening (enough to feed a family if 8 with enough seeds left over for next year so BIG garden for 4 ppl to deal with)
      I've built our house in my vans, cut and logged wood in them, have chickens, chop wood, do general yard work, box and weightlift in them. And they last me 2-3 years, so for what I put them through I'd say they're good. I just have 2 pairs, the oldest becomes the scapegoat 'work' shoes while the nicer pair is for going out until my 'work' ones get a hole in them and the nice pair becomes the work pair.

    I would literally pay money to see a pair of the Defcon Vans cut in half and examined. They are supposedly made with "warrior suede" - some kind of waterproof, oil-resistant, and fire retardant super suede. Plus the highest level of quality control that vans offers. Aside from being complete unobtanium considering they sell out within 10 seconds every time they release a new model, they are really cool styling wise. Some of the sickest footwear on the market as far as I'm concerned. But I've always been curious if any of their claims are legit considering the few pairs I've seen in real life have had some goofy looking imperfections right out of the box.

      I really hate how vans midsole easily separate on the toebox foot bending side. That's why I will never buy vault line, there are no different between them except looks. Better to buy pro series, it's cheaper than vault

    I just bought my first vans since I was a youngling. They were on sale and bought them so quick I didn't realize they were some sort of winter vans. Now I have to wait till the fall at least to try them out. They don't have any shiny leather. They have soft plaid cloth where the cheap leather is on the vaults. They're also really thick everywhere. This will definitely be warm for the winter.

    • @KRZslayer
      @KRZslayer 4 роки тому +2

      oops lol. Yeah, MTE (Mountain edition) shoes would have water-resistant leather or suede uppers, thicker linings, and lug outsole (I usually call it a reverse waffle). They start selling them for the fall and winter and they try to get rid of them now that they are out of season. They may be a little toasty right now, but hopefully they'll work out for you in the future lol.

    I’ll add that there are 2 types of Vans vault tiers. There’s the true to the original model (which is the one reviewed here) and another one that is used for collaborations (boutique exclusive colors and other brands). The collab model ranges from $90-120 but is much higher quality than the “regular” vault model.

    On every pair of Vans I've ever owned, the binding tape stuff near the big toe always breaks and separates from the canvas, then on the other side near the pinkie toe. Usually I wear them until the sole on the heel wears through. I sometimes get mild separation of the sole like you mentioned but for me the rubber wears through before that becomes an issue.

    They should make aa super pro version where everything is turned up to 11!! All material is twice as tick and better quality, leather is from like a baby walrus, gold shoelace eyelids, superior leather laces, hand mad and signed by Tony Hawk, with a price of like $2,000!! I mean if Belieqnagi or whatever the hell their name is, can sell highheald Crocks for over $600 (yup saw them in personal at Nordstrom!! I've got a pair of normal grey vans for like 4 years at least, and since they were quite beaten up and I wanted a flat shoe so it naturally became my workout sneaker. I bought another full white vans and only realised my grey vans were quite dirty. I cleaned it up only to realise how durable they were. Although the mid soles beside my toes were separated and needs to be reglued, but that can be fixed easily.

    I would say the Vault options are not necessarily supposed to be “better”. Big part of the appeal is in the retro design, just as with the Chuck 70s. They position it as a niche product with a more limited demand.

    • @soqueriaterum3999
      @soqueriaterum3999 4 роки тому

      @Marc Carran 70s have a different last. And yes, the shoes have some features that perhaps make them better, but in my opinion the main draw of these lines are how they look closer to how original vans/converse looked (and were made).
      I believe Chuck 70s first appeared in Japan. The Japanese market is crazy about vintage Americana and wanted something closer to vintage shoes because what they saw in stores didn´t look the same. Levi´s is another great example of this. Japanese first got in touch with Levi´s during the american occupation after WWII and when the brand entered Japan, the stuff just wasn´t the same. Thus was born the Levis Vintage Clothing line and other repro brands. The same thing also happened with Red Wing (Red Wing Heritage line was born in Japan and then Europe, before reaching the USA).
      Obviously, all these companies saw potential in what their Japanese divisions were making and decided to implement the strategy globally. Converse 70s are just Converse JP without the Vibram soles. It doesn´t make sense to change the whole look of a shoe that is selling to make them closer to the originals, so we have these retro lines that are premium in construction (a bit) but mostly marketed through storytelling. They are niched at a certain market that´s into the story behind these designs. They are also probably produced in smaller numbers (wich also drives costs up by a bit).
      What I´m saying is that even if they had the exact same construction and materials, I wouldn´t call them overpriced because the change in design is also one might want to pay an extra $20 bucks for. The notion of better quality can also be in how something looks!

    In my personal experience,vault are much more comfortable than the original version(not as comfortable as the pro series,it’s not bouncy,but won’t hurt your feet neither) plus they last longer than the original and never really fall apart like the original tend to. The less durable canvas inside makes the shoes feels nicer on foot. If you’re willing to spend the extra money I will say go for it.

    I used to wear nothing but Vans, but something happened along the way. In high school back in 1996 I had “Old School Hightops” and they lasted 3 freakin years. As an adult about 10 years ago I got my favorite high school shoe again and they were falling apart in about 3 months with much easier mileage. Vans have turned into crap, and I am not sure what exactly changed, but something definitely did. The binding tape was coming off on the front row box, the sole was peeling off the back as you described, and the canvass was tearing at the stitches on the outside portion of one of the shoes. They were purchased at a Vans store in case that matters to anyone.

    I've been a collector, seller, and skater of Vans Syndicate, Vault, Anaheim, General Release, you name it. I've examined them thoroughly. The most important factor for durability comes down to the rubber compounds they use for the waffle and which factory they are produced in. The craftsmanship varies depending on this and you can refer to the 2-3 letter code on the waffle sole. The foxing and overall shape was always great from DT, HF, and ZDC soles. The IFC and ICC foxing and waffle materials always shredded and wore down faster, they often came horribly misshapen from the factory and felt like garbage the entire time I'd skate them.

      @@andy.5332 Lots of product is from Vietnam, China or Indonesia,... But if they want to buy stuff they have to order from EU or US. That a waste of time and cost of delivery, come out of factory but shipped around the world then shipped back, dont you think that is weird and very waste of resources ?

    I HATE that pleather crap on the sock liner on regular Vans! Arrrgh. Because of that I usually pay for the Sk8 Hi and Old Skool “Pro” lines just because they have a softer cotton/canvas sock liner instead of that crappy pleather - but! I don’t like how bulkier the Pro lines are in the front of the shoes with the Duracap around the toe box and prefer the more lighter feel of the originals. Can’t win.

    Bit of a wierd one but you massively inspire me, you've opened my eyes to so many different leather craft techniques . I know you're probably unlikely to see this but I've just dropped a video where I design and make a minimalist wallet. As a brand new start up, I'd love to hear what a household name like yourself would say about the design/fabrication.

    In Jersey, awesome vid. Very good to know. I wish the warp tour comes back. Went to the AC and saw my fav band anti flag. I wear nothing but vans and Adidas. To the Van's family thank you for a a great history and shoe cause it resonates out here. Everyone remembers thier first pair of Van's cause I do. I buy them as gifts cause getting a pair of Van's is a right of passage.

    The pro versions have some Duracap reinforcements and are meant to be the more durable versions of the shoes. They are usually $5-$10 more than the classic styles (More in line with the pricing of the comfycush shoes.)
    Also, most pro shoes have removable Ultracush insoles. (I think all pro shoes have removable insoles, but some may be the "Popcush" like some Rowan pros. I never took the time to figure out what that was lol)

    I owned one pair of low top Vans many moons ago. Most shoes I own, if the outside holds up for more then 6 months, the inside will crap out WAY before the outside does. I am big and heavy though, so I put mega abuse on the inside materials. The Vans I had did hold up on the outside really well. The inside shredded up, but overall they were a good pair of shoes.
    In my situation, already at the 3 minute mark I could tell you the more expensive pair would be worth the money for me, because they put better material where the insides go bad for me, mostly around the heel.

    I have and wear tons of Vaults. The rubber lasts way longer on them. I get a good 2 years on them vs Vans that last half a year before the rubber gets holes and the canvas starts tearing.

    I think their "pro" line is marketed as the more durable line of their shoes but I don't own a pair so I can't say whether or not they actually are any more durable. I do own a pair of Van Vaults, and they have held up great for me in the past 4+ years. And I am not easy on these shoes. I have walked A LOT in them and it's not 'easy walking,' either. Well above average for any normal person. They are still my go-to dog walking shoes so that is at least 4-5 miles a night, every night, and have been since I got them. All in all, they've stood the test of time for me. I got them almost 5 years ago now and they have yet to break despite my best efforts.

    for me it's just preference. i can't go back to regular vans after owning the vault versions. they just FEEL better, not just material wise, but also knowing you're not wearing the average pair you see on everyone else's foot. and i've never liked that black racing stripe on the binding tape. without it the binding tape looks thicker and cleaner.

    Just curious. Does the 2-ply canvas seem completely glued together? Like every inch of the canvas? Or just certain areas / edges?
    I haven't worn Vans in a long time and started wearing them again to ease my way to barefoot shoes (and away from expensive sneakers that I typically bought since times are tough $), or if not barefoot, just Vans. That said, I bought leather Vans. I think the top coating is super thick... Very not breathable. Never had stinky feet until wearing these.
    I've been wearing Ultraboosts for so many years... So just trying to find some affordable vulcanized sneakers that's breathable. Hoping the canvas isn't just lathered in glue, I can't imagine that being breathable. And I won't be able to find out until I've long passed my ability to return the pair. I'm already $50 down
    (I guess Im sorta venting my frustration too haha sorry for the rant)
    Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks! Always find these vids interesting! I love researching stuff

    VANS PRO TIP: Vans silhouettes typically come in 2 models. Regular and Pro. Regular are the ones you find at a place like Journey's, whereas the Pros are what they sell at skate shops. Made for skating. The differences are about as vast (or more so) as you see here with the Vault shoes. More robust wrapping, higher quality materials, and (my favorite) thick removable insoles. WAY better than the regulars or the Vaults. Vans Pros are the same silhouettes you know, but built for abrasion and more impact.

  • @jeremyxiong5666
    @jeremyxiong5666 4 роки тому

    Try cutting the skate hi pros, they’re meant to used for skating so they’re meant to be more durable. They have more padding, skate insole etc etc. I’d love to watch that because apparently there is a rubber cap in the toe area of the shoe where you slide your foot (Duracap), but I’ve personally never reached it so I’d love to see you cut into it.
