@@JasonBassettphotography Exactly. The price/quality ratio is a rather short-sighted way to look at things, especially when it comes to fashion. Work environment, design, status, availability of similar products in the market, how you see yourself, and what you want to project-these elements greatly influence a buyer's choice. I came across these shoes without even knowing a celebrity wore them; I just really liked the style and hadn’t seen anything quite like it.
I bought my pair of GG 4 years ago and i love them. They felt great right out of the box and they did not fall apart in any way. They are my only sneakers. I don’t need more, i love these so much.
This would support the idea that I heard as a child. I remember being told that some times when some thing is a high price you are just paying for the name. This would be an example of that. It was being told things like that is the reason I typically stay away from hype or name brands and go with more affordable or generic. As I said though I have never seen these shoes, like ever.
I am a footwear designer for a major sportswear brand, a few things I would note on these: -the heel lining material could be an extremely premium synthetic (it might not be but synthetic leathers can be as or more expensive than traditional leathers) maybe could be cool to speak more about handfeel and abrasion resistance there vs a torch. - the built in heel lift to me seems to effect the silhouette pretty drastically. Some of the another shoes you showed that are better value have a pretty boxy shape vs the super low profile silhouette of the golden goose thangs. I imagine the lift is to make the shoes feel closer to an Oxford dress shoe. -brand is everything for fashion product like this, definitely challenging to quantify that, sort of the price of artwork in my eyes. Love the Channel, fun to see inside so many shoes!
The Olukai upper is some kind of treated full grain chrome tan (which they market as water-resistant), and the lining on the ankles and counter cover are also some kind of full grain. They’re made in Vietnam - Weston has cut them open on his channel before.
I own a pair of the Superstars and the quality/durability is actually great. They've lasted for years! Probably wouldn't pay full price on these though - they've gotten a little more expensive over the years.
I bought a pair of Ball Stars about a year ago under the impression that they actually use some premium leathers. They are positioned as Italian luxury fashion. The sneakers themselves ran extremely narrow and 1 full size long. I found them to be extremely uncomfortable to walk in for any reasonable length of time without some pain and fatigue. A miserable experience trying to break them in. Forget it if you have a normal to wide foot shape. I had to sell them. Not worth more than $150 IMO. Edit: Thanks for exposing the brand and please continue to expose more Italian lux footwear!
I’m from the South of France and this is the brand of rich people kids. It looks like a Converse knock off but 6 times more expensive (and more depending on where you live)and those kids parents buy them a LOT.
My upstairs neighbor worked for the equity firm that bought Golden Goose. I had one conversation with him and I asked him why his company was shelling out so much to acquire it when the shoes are so low quality in comparison to other luxury goods, and all he said was "because idiots keep buying them".
"Weirdly enough, these same idiots-or at least the vast majority of them-can actually afford them, so they must be doing something right in life. Plus, your statement is like telling someone who has the means to buy a Porsche to get a Honda Civic instead, just because they both drive. You’d have to be the one not be very smart to ask him such a question.
@Lacigogne-w8j I don't have a problem if people want to buy these shoes with their own money, rather I was surprised that this customer base's perception of value is so different from mine. I also don't agree with your analogy about cars - a pair of golden goose isn't a Porshe, its more like a Honda Civic with a star painted on the drivers side door (but at 4x the cost of a regular Honda Civic).
These were really popular in Korea starting in 2012. (In Korea now, if you are still wearing these, then you look like you don't have a clue. You are stuck back a decade.) They were like $240-80 back then. My wife had them she wore it for awhile. Kept them in storage. Then sold them to one of those "used luxury shops" a couple of years ago and basically got her money back. Unless they are totally beat up and the soles all worn down and the rubber showing, selling used Golden Goose is really good for the seller, because the product looks used in the first place.
Is Wes reading our minds? I was traveling for work and last night saw a bunch of young rich dad’s wearing these shoes around the hotel lobby. I joked with my family I should trade in my Hey Dudes for some Goose. I think not. I would rather buy a pair PNW boots or multiple pairs of Jim Greens.
I know a guy who works for a boutique luxury fashion store in a high end mall, and he said they only needed a few sales a day to stay afloat. The profit margin must be crazy high.
Saw a family that wandered into a golden goose store at my local mall one time. I’ll never forget the look on the store clerk’s face when those toddlers started picking up those shoes and rolling them around.
I was at Selfridges London last time, I was browsing, and I picked a pair of GG. I looked inside, I removed the insole, and I started laughing. The sales assistants looked at me in a weird way; I'm sure they had no idea why I was laughing. I actually call the lining "used towel" lol Philippe Model does the same thing, but I find their sneakers to be slightly better quality, and they charge £300 unstead of £600 for GG. Your work is valuable, and I highly appreciate it, but unfortunately, Golden Goose will still make sh*t lots of money because people are all about hype and looks, and no one cares about quality. I hope you'll do Rick Owens sneakers soon!

Just because you follow Bobby Lee, doesn't mean people weren't wearing these before. Plenty of people swear by Golden Goose. Personally, I tried them out and hated them. Not worth the money... at all. Also, uncomfortable, narrow, and probably bad for your foot health.
Went to Europe early this year. I knew this brand was a scam, went inside a Golden Goose store somewhere in Milan and saw a sign board for their after sale services.. it costs somewhere around $80-$100USD just to let a person from the store to purposely scuff up the shoes for that worn down look…
the goose that lays the golden eggs for Allessandro and Francesco.. they remind me of the garbage watch brands like MVMT. I'd rather wear Diadora or Puma.. though Puma increasingly faking the sidewall stitch e.g. slipstream, ca is a bit crappy. Those two shoes would be great with a real stitch..
Corrected grain leather is the best for white shoes. The multiple layers of pigment give extra protection against staining vs semi aniline and its single layer pigment. Semi aniline is more breathable and has the natural grain but more prone to staining. Corrected grain is the best fit for purpose leather if you want to ensure maximum whiteness for longer. Also corrected grain has less wastage and you can use all of the hide, so more sustainable in the less wastage aspect but also more economical on scale.
Their superstars are hands down comfiest sneakers I have ever owned, have rather narrow foot. Yes they are overpriced I get it but as a sneaker itself in my opinion they are not bad by any means. Also I prefer the worn look because getting "600 buck pristine shiny white sneakers" will get scoffs and dirt really fast but on wornout look you do not care about it. If toes were forced forward against shoe then one simply has too small size.
i have worn those kind of shoes for over 15 years now (my average price is 270usd for a pair). started with phillipe modell and when golden goose came out i used both brands, for me they are almost the same. The fat insole, will squish down and will make a very if not most comfortable feel after wearing them for a year or so. the biggest issue I had was the glue of the sidepart and the heel separating on various models. also the sidepart gets hard and brittle after stepping into special dirt like oil or other chemicals. to sum up, the most comfortable shoes for me with this look, but they fall apart on the sole too soon...far better quality than converse btw...
For 600 you can buy a good northwestern boot... and maybe get it shipped even to europe... maybe. And as for europe... oh boy you can get probably a custom made leather jackboot in east europe
I'm only 6'5 and women don't pay attention to me so now my plan is to buy some trashy overpriced shoes that'll make me 6'6 and then wait for the ladies to flock.
This might be very niche but I'd like to see some reviews and cut-in-halves of some weightlifting/powerlifting belts, most companies claim genuine leather and suede, I think it would be great to see how some belts are made and what kind of quality they are.
I feel like 20 years or more ago the high fashion brands at least looked special, they were either well-made or delicate but beautiful, now they just laugh in your face with stuff that is obviously Payless shoes quality for $600. Somebody in East Asia got paid pennies to rough those shoes up and make them "pre-worn", and then the alien weirdos who buy this crap dutifully line up to fight each other over a pair. Here's a white t-shirt, $300, and they chase it like dogs. Getting pretty fed up with it.

They’re for a niche audience though. I got mine seven-eight years ago after reading that grandmas swear by them, I then got the winter version, too. 10/10 for my bad posture lol
As someone who owns two pair of Goldens I can tell you that feel wise they do seem (at least to me) better than my sambas. Now, for me the selling point was not the quality, it was the distressed effortless style (which for most is going to sound dumb). Im fully self-aware, tho I love mine.
I share your sentiments as an owner of a few GGDB. While the quality is not top notch now we know, somehow the feel, fit and comfort of GGDB beat my adidas hands down. And its look.. i’d say no brand out there can yet replicate that. That said, the quality of my latest pair is starting to look dubious, probably my last to own..

The thing about golden goose is that although all their main model/collection types are similarly priced, the quality and the thickness and the finish varies across the collections. My first pair was from the Stardan collection and I had absolutely no complaints about the built quality n leather. And then I ordered the exact same shoe you are reviewing here. This is from the Superstar collection which is supposed to be the most worn out looking collection, and I returned it back right away. The quality looked horrible compared to the first pair I owned from the other collection. Sole was terrible, the insides were literally exactly like u described… like some cheap car cloth. And the leather looked low quality. I believe with the superstar collection, they r intentionally going overboard with that worn out look. Definitely not for me. Having said that, I love their Stardan collection. Would be nice if you could review those too. Very different. Especially the ones that aren’t designed excessively worn out. Still not worth the price but a huge difference in material quality compared to Superstar collection.
I like seeing average people buy these shoes. It’s one things for celebs to do it as a marketing or endorsement stunt, or just because they have stupid FU money. For the average person, it’s great. It’s like a public, visible, declaration of extreme stupidity. And then you know to avoid them like the plague. So grateful, thank you. Keep buying products like these. @@Jackie-x4u they buy them coz they see rich celebs wearing them.
@@sionynyes, the young celebs, I guess a lot of them came from normal working backgrounds and made it big. They thrive on setting the trends. But for each one or two of these celebs, there'll be, say, 4-5+ million normal young kids wanting to wear the stuff they wear.
I used to be obsessed w golden goose sneakers bcs prime casey neistat was wearing it.. back then I thought it looks really cool.. until I tried them out.. now thanks to channels like rose anvil I managed to educate myself abt leather n the truth abt designer brands
Took 2 years to decide if I wanted a pair. Now i have 2 pairs and i love them 🤷🏻♀️ they are cute (imo) and go with everything
Wow, an overhyped brand I never heard of worn by vacuous celebrities has no quality whatsoever and costs and arm and a leg - color me shocked! Crappy quality and they don't look even remotely comfortable. I'll drop under $100 on a pair of Skechers and be much better off. Great video as always, Weston.
Bought a couple of Koios after watching the Rose Anvil review. Amazing build quality and comfort! Great value…
These make Common Projects look like a steal
Pretty sure these guys proved that Common Project are also shit, right? Unless that’s exactly the point you’re trying to make. Ha I’m sorry it’s late and I’m exhausted
@@fuelon I don't think he's saying that these or Common Projects are shit. Just that they're overpriced. Since both are overpriced, I rather spend $400 for CP than $600 for Golden Goose.
@@LK_EBM Yeah not necessarily shit but there are better options out there and the price is too high

These videos are so gold. Keep expoding these "luxury" products for the scam that they are.
It's almost as if the brand name, Golden Goose, tells you it's all just a fairy tale meant to make money out of nothing.
Reminds me of sham wow! It’s literally in the name
I get the negative sentiment, but tbf the quality is really good. My pairs have lasted me for years.
same! mine have traveled with me EVERYWHERE and done everything from going through gold mines to 4 wheelers in Vegas. Good for the gym everyday for me and still holding up. I actually have the exact pair in the video lol
is it worth 600? of course not in material.. but I like the style, status, and I find them very comfortable. Works for my job doing celebrity events.
I have $20 shoes from Burlington that have lasted years too.
“Pre worn look” is the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard for clothes, either wear them in yourself or don’t.
LOVE IT. Thanks for exposing the hucksters. No one needs bad shoes.
600 dollars for off-brand converses lol
A fool and their money will be soon parted.
Right? How do they get away with it? I honestly thought they WERE Converse when I first saw them
I am a footwear designer for a major sportswear brand, a few things I would note on these:
-the heel lining material could be an extremely premium synthetic (it might not be but synthetic leathers can be as or more expensive than traditional leathers) maybe could be cool to speak more about handfeel and abrasion resistance there vs a torch.
I guess you could say scamming is an art 🤣💀
For $600 you could get 3 pairs of Olukai sneakers with way more genuine leather, and 3 pairs of superfeet insoles for EACH sneaker
@@zachtan Are Olukais good for $150? What leather do they use and where are they made?
You could get 4 pairs of Thursday sneakers with $60 left over lol. And get significantly more, higher quality(Horween) leather in each pair. Wild.
The Olukai upper is some kind of treated full grain chrome tan (which they market as water-resistant), and the lining on the ankles and counter cover are also some kind of full grain. They’re made in Vietnam - Weston has cut them open on his channel before.
@@LK_EBMolukai offers an Italian leather sneaker for under $150. They are awesome
But Olukai is also an overpriced shoe marketed to a certain type of person...
I own a pair of the Superstars and the quality/durability is actually great. They've lasted for years! Probably wouldn't pay full price on these though - they've gotten a little more expensive over the years.
I own 3 pairs (2 Superstars, 1 HiStar) and I think they're great. I frequently wear my HiStars.
150$ ? 😂 dude these are like 40$ shoes

They were like $240-80 back then.
The only thing dumber than a new pair shoes that look used is the people who buy them.

I actually call the lining "used towel" lol
Philippe Model does the same thing, but I find their sneakers to be slightly better quality, and they charge £300 unstead of £600 for GG.
Your work is valuable, and I highly appreciate it, but unfortunately, Golden Goose will still make sh*t lots of money because people are all about hype and looks, and no one cares about quality.

Went to Europe early this year. I knew this brand was a scam, went inside a Golden Goose store somewhere in Milan and saw a sign board for their after sale services.. it costs somewhere around $80-$100USD just to let a person from the store to purposely scuff up the shoes for that worn down look…
I love your honesty. Keep up the good work!
the goose that lays the golden eggs for Allessandro and Francesco.. they remind me of the garbage watch brands like MVMT.
I'd rather wear Diadora or Puma.. though Puma increasingly faking the sidewall stitch e.g. slipstream, ca is a bit crappy. Those two shoes would be great with a real stitch..
Good point & the Puma is a 6th of the price & i’d bet would last as long as these crummy, overpriced jokes
Boot vs sneaker
I think the main selling point of this shoe just like with pretty much any designer sneaker is the design.
