Hi Jake! Cheers from LA for the great work (as per usual). An exciting camera. I'm definitely someone in the know, we occupy a lot of the same technical communities and speak a lot of the same language. But I nevertheless wanted to say, your explanation of global shutter in this video in particular, is the most articulate and most concise explanation of it I have heard. I've heard it explained by dozens of technicians, camera operators, and manufacturers in person, as well as hordes of youtubers and videomakers, and I believe the way you put it is the way that best describes it for the person needing an introduction to what it is. And that's no small task. So the next time I'm asked what one is, I will just show them this. Just person to person, I appreciate that level of care and attention. It can be difficult to remember and focus on effective communication when we get to play with such exciting, intuitive tools. So thanks, mate. - Soren
I’m so glad to see your preview so early! As others have said, please get Xyla 21 🙌🏻 Can you confirm that you can bake in your own LUTs in your footage like on FX3?
Watched your review on my 65” Sony OLED. The Dulens APO mini prime 43mm looks horrible. There is so much CA it is very distracting. Please don’t call it a “unique characteristic or look”, it looks terrible. It appears the “track” portion of the review was with Sony lenses, they look amazing. Once again, a fantastic review.
I wouldn't say that's how the Dulens look normally (Check this - ua-cam.com/video/Odga-tYQ3Vk/v-deo.html) What's adding the aberrations and other funkiness is the Module 8 adapter I mention in the video. Thanks for watching James! Jake
Glad to see that it still has that noise reduction at 6400 iso. A few other reviewers said that it didnt, which was surprising since basically every full frame camera from sony the past 5 years had it
Would rather they just record the video at 6k60 and 3k120 instead of pushing them both into a 4k container. Also, open gate would be really nice; this certainly has the readout speed.
It’s not the first Full-Frame Global Shutter camera. It’s the first Mirrorless FF GS camera. DJI the drone company released a 45MP FF Global Shutter camera with interchangeable lens called the Zenmuse P1. I know because I bought one for my Matrice 300 RTK drone. The P1 costs $6500
The P1 sensor uses a "global mechanical shutter", which is a mechanical, not an electronic global shutter. Big difference! It's only going to provide mechanical global shutter in still image mode, not during video recording.
@@87solarsky I’m strictly addressing the false claims that the A9viii is the first full frame global shutter. Reviewers need to reflect this accurately. The P1 is made for high speed photogrammetry which is the collection of georectified photos called a photdataset which is then processed into photorealistic fully mensurated 3D models. They went with a global shutter in order to allow the drone to fly faster while still capturing non-distorted imagery. It actually takes photos from the same geo location from different angles which help to capture building facades more accurately.

Its a huge leap forward and I don't understand why Sony Products/Marketing team didn't started new Model series for Global Shutter mirrorless. "Just mark 3"?
Tbh, I'm not excited at this camera cause I'm not their target audience for this. What I would like to see is to have this global shutter in a ZV-E1 style body (same size), with all the dials (3 of them on the left size), more rugged form factor but still maintain the same size, put in the best LCD possible with A7RV style screen, squeeze in solid state cooling fan from Frore Systems so it doesn't overheat, dual card slots. And for Sony to release 1.8 series of lenses that is matched, minimal focus breathing, same size and weight something like what Panasonic is doing and add in computational photography for "auto" mode for days that I just want a nice picture with one click. Being limited to shooting 16:9 on a 3:2 sensor is really a major downside for many video shooters and one of the reasons why I can’t recommend Sony, especially when Fuji and Panasonic offer open gate at cheaper price points.
They'd probably R&D it if there were genuine consumer demand. That’s the real delineation of what sync speed will be most efficient to getting the Strobes FULL Powerput. this is almost like what electric cars did to combustion engines. Game changer. Hopefully other manufacterers will either buy sony's sensor or produce it themselves.
Canon never had a global shutter DSLR. Blackmagic did. I forgot this is a channel more geared toward consumer devices. We embedded system engineers used to swap sensors on cameras and use the guts of canons (5d mark ii) and nikons.
Can you please link me a source for Canon's Full Frame Global Shutter please from 2009? I don't think you watched the video, as I did mention that Global Shutter isn't a new thing in video cameras, but it is a new thing that the A9III uses a full frame one. Jake
@@CVPTVen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_II Canon + MagicLantern. There are other solutions too, that serious directors and embedded engineers have been making their own camera systems for a while. BlackMagic Cameras have been 4K and Global Shutter since 2012-2013. The Sony a9iii is a game changer for people and regular folks that don't partake in (embedded) engineering. We've been using these setups in hollywood, churches, and other pro-venues since about 2008. But the sony a9iii will do what you want for $6_000. Sometimes the color bayer layer is different with sony and fuji and they end up looking purple and green cast of color. So everyone who likes a different color (grading science) grabs a Red, Black Magic, Canon or aria. $6_000 is alot for a regular camera. The most important thing on a camera are the available lenses with a good aperture and auto-focus capabilities.
There is no mention of the 5D MKII being global shutter on that Wikipedia page. Have you got an actual source to backup your statement? Have you watched the video? I mentioned that GS for video isn't a new thing, it's the implementation of a FF GS which is. Jake
This is the third time I've felt a true seismic shift for DSLR style cameras. First it was the Canon 5D mark ii recording video, then getting a Panasonic GH5 with 4:2:2 10 bit video, and now this Sony with global shutter in full frame. Incredible milestone unlocked! Can't wait for this to trickle down to other cameras too, especially ones that don't need the stills functionality that the a series has where it will make it more affordable.
If I understand the specs (maybe I don't - I'm no expert), Sony is once again releasing an exciting camera but, on the filming end, lacking true 24fps. I find this odd, but I guess the explanation is in the market they are targeting.
As the base ISO for photos is 250 on this camera having 2000 for SLog3 makes a lot of sense, it's 2.5 x 800 the base ISO of cameras that have ISO 100 for photos. The reason seems to be some technical limitation of the global shutter sensor.
2000 is not that high. It is a very practical iso for adequate DOF in full frame video with lighting at 500lux. You need about 30cm of depth of field in a typical closeup as in a discussion in a film or a tv series. With crop factor cameras you can get 30cm at f4 iso640, so that is where you want good dynamic range in crop factor cameras. The f6.3 equivalent on the full frame requires much higher iso, 1600 for the same depth of field. Photography camera modes do not have enough dynamic range in highlights for use in video, so manufacturers add two stops by using an iso 2 stops lower, base iso of 160 in super 35 and crop factor, and use a lut that boosts the image by two stops to get iso640 shadows and exposure, but shapes the highlights to preserve them, so they remain iso160. That is why the high dynamic range video mode is 640 and not 160. A full frame camera with large pixel and greater dynamic range can probably add 3 stops and still have OK shadows. A 250 becomes 2000.
This is one impressive sensor!! But global shutter sensors are still too expensive for more general adoption over rolling shutter. In terms of a hybrid camera, for $6k you're better off getting the A1 than the A9iii. They are both grossly overpriced in my opinion, but at least with the A1 you are getting a much more balanced set of features on the photo AND video side of things, not just photo.
Great camera, do not forget to mention that it will have 0-1 FW upgrades after it is released and in a couple of years, you can buy it for about $2000...

… no, it uses a normal 24,6 MP BSI CMOS (rolling shutter) sensor from Sony. 🤷🏼♂️
overkill? lmao
I just buy a 7vi
Would love to see a test with action sports and the A9III. Mountain biking, racing, skateboarding etc
Please would you test shooting rooms only lit with LED stips like big industry construction sites.
Just subscribed, please shoot some 60 frames per second video with it and upload it here!
best things in our lives is underrated… like this channel in youtube, like batman in gotham city
Great thanks! Looking forward to see your studio controlled tests about dynamic range and iso performance. Cheers
3:42 This is a VERRY important aspect!
Need a run and gun video with examples of handheld vs ergonomic rig
Hopefully the IBIS is as good as gimbals!
Hoping that the new grip
Becomes the standard.
I don't even watch camera reviews unless you all upload! Then I know its worh my time!
toady :)
Nice to see that you was invested to Turkiye.
a7sIV with the global shutter?
7:01 😲
Canon never had a global shutter DSLR. Blackmagic did. I forgot this is a channel more geared toward consumer devices. We embedded system engineers used to swap sensors on cameras and use the guts of canons (5d mark ii) and nikons.
Can you please link me a source for Canon's Full Frame Global Shutter please from 2009? I don't think you watched the video, as I did mention that Global Shutter isn't a new thing in video cameras, but it is a new thing that the A9III uses a full frame one. Jake

Canon + MagicLantern.
Just wait for the DR . A revolution would be an Alexa true 17+ stop of DR at a reasonable price.
If I understand the specs (maybe I don't - I'm no expert), Sony is once again releasing an exciting camera but, on the filming end, lacking true 24fps. I find this odd, but I guess the explanation is in the market they are targeting.
Sony alpha and Sony cine are two different divisions
It’s not on the market yet.

Salivating 🤤🤤🤤
Base iso for slog 3 is on 2000, ouch that's quite a high number, is there a reason why sony using iso 2000 for the base iso?
They are both grossly overpriced in my opinion, but at least with the A1 you are getting a much more balanced set of features on the photo AND video side of things, not just photo.
global shutter is great, but can we close down the shutter angle on this camera? lets say to 90º or 45º?
what, a7siii cant do 4k 120p full width?
1.1x crop
Are you in the habit of asking questions you already know the answer to? Maybe life would be easier if you'd just directly say what is on your mind 😊
No, it applies a 10% crop. Small enough to essentially be negligible, but not technically full width readout.
Great camera, do not forget to mention that it will have 0-1 FW upgrades after it is released and in a couple of years, you can buy it for about $2000...
Oh fuck, he said ”bunch”… it’s a no from me… thanks a bunch…
