Focal Plane Shutter Vs Leaf Shutter

- In this video I talk about the benefits and drawbacks of focal plane and leaf lenses. Choosing a camera is hard and the shutter type will make a difference. A leaf shutter is very useful when you want to start exploring flash. An electronic shutter is an option but I think the leaf shutter is underestimated.

Hi Richard, back in the 50's and early 60's there were quite a few leaf shutter SLR's. Have a 1958 Zeiss Ikon Contaflex with an in body leaf shutter and inter changeable lenses. Quite a mechanical sucess to provide ttl viewing and not fog the film. Useful back then as flash sync for focal plane shutters was about 30th or 60th of a second and the leaf allowed 500th.
I have the 5d classic and the Fujifilm looks promising.
Very Helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I love my Fuji X100V and it´s leaf shutter
you own the camera i would like to try. do you love it?
@@RichardBarleyphoto Bought it about a year ago. I am usually a Canon man, still own a 6d ii and a 5d iv plus a collection of lenses. But I wanted something smaller, for my pocket. So the X100V came out and was the one to go for. Agreed, it´s not a cheap camera, but it´s a wolf in a sheepskin. The leafshutter plus an inbuild 4 stop ND Filtre gives you thousands of options with flashlights. Very good also for street photography as noone takes you serious with such a small thing in your hands. I am glad I bought it and is a bit of a must carry as soon as I leave house. Fits easily in my jacket, light weight and good picture quality (if you like the 35mm lens equivalent).
@rumtreibbaer I am enjoying using the x10 at the moment. Use it set at 35mm equivalent, ready for when I can make an excuse to buy the x100v , will need weddings to start again
The XT100v great little camera. But that is the problem to small it has very poor ergonomics, I am not a fan of small cameras you try to operate the controls in cold weather and with gloves. This is the problem why do people think that smaller is better, I would rather have a camera that feels good to hold in your hand easy to operate gives you far more options to obtain more lenses. I compare it to car we can all go around in a little fiat 500 or audi a3 better all round. Smaller is not always better.
I understand exactly what you are saying, I have always stuck with the 5D , but smaller cameras like the x10 are easy to use and carry
