    Awesome! So, with the new Sony Sony a9 III, which breaks ground with the new global shutter and can sync up to 1/80,000th (yes, you read that right) of a second, I guess we can all sell our leaf shutter lenses and still get the benefits of wide open apertures with normal lenses?

  • @AdamMuise

    This is an awesome video. I have cheated and used my Fujifilm x100f (leaf shutter) to get higher shutter speeds. Of course, that is only if you don't want to engage the ND filters or if they can't push your shutter speed down far enough. Follow up question for the video: what are the drawbacks of using ND filters? Autofocus? Image quality from light loss?

    • @buchsg
      @buchsg 4 роки тому

      That’s I was thinking of, just put a nd8 and you're good... af works great with it and nowadays with Evf you still can see what you’re photographing but the down side is you’ll need more flash power output than with a leaf shutter as the nd filter reduce the whole exposure not only the background exposure like the shutter speed only

    • @DavidBergmanPhoto
      @DavidBergmanPhoto 4 роки тому

      Yea it’s tough to shoot optically with a ND but not such a big deal with EVF. More importantly, as Gregory said, you can’t change the ratio of foreground to background with an ND. So you can’t darken the sky unless you have a lot of flash power to compensate.

    Would be nice if you would have shown a shot taken at say 1/4000. Leaf shutters are nice but they also have a limitation, their max shutter speed. The more expensive ones only go 1/2000. Also your strobe's flash duration comes into play.

    • @trym2121
      @trym2121 4 роки тому

      Recent version rx1 and x100 can do 1/4000 though

    • @DavidBergmanPhoto
      @DavidBergmanPhoto 4 роки тому +1

      True that many medium format cameras can’t shoot as fast as modern DSLRs. I still occasionally play around with my old hasselblad 500 c/m and it only goes to 1/500! That’s why I rented this body for the video so I could get to 1/2000. The wizards only go to 1/1600 and I think the only way to trigger faster than that would be to hard wire directly into the flash.

    • @jebemligashta

    I should know the answer to this but I do not. With the EOS R, if I use the silent digital shutter mode what type of shutter is it using. Could that be used to emulate the effect of a leaf shutter. Can you eve use this mode with flash? I have no idea and I have never heard it mentioned or covered anywhere. JRS

    • @stefanotealdi

    Can you explain why did you need to adjust the speed light 3 stops down? I understand the need of adjusting down the power of light when using a wider aperture, but why 3 stops? Is it because going from f8 to f3.2 is approximately 3 stops?

    • @RobertGrøndahlWinther
      @RobertGrøndahlWinther 4 роки тому +2

      Correct. f/2.8 >> f/4 >> f/5.6 >> f/8 would be 3 full stops down, so going from f/3.2 to f/8 is 2 2/3 stops.

    • @enduraman1

  • @gregostudio
    @gregostudio 4 роки тому +1

    David, thanks for the info. Near the end of the video you seem to suggest that using a speedlight at 1/4 power outdoors instead of a big strobe is somehow the result of the leaf shutter setup. I don`t see the logic. The strobe power you need is due to the ambient light. Having a leaf shutter means you can shoot at wider apertures because you are cutting light out with a faster shutter, which you did mention. The only other advantage would be if shooting fast action since 1/1600 for overall freeze time is better than 1/250. Again, I don`t see how using a leaf shutter would mean you can use less strobe power in a given continuous light situation.

    • @DavidBergmanPhoto
      @DavidBergmanPhoto 4 роки тому

      Because I could shoot at a faster shutter speed (1/1600 vs. 1/250 in this case) at the same aperture, I'm essentially darkening my ambient light nearly 3 stops. So I can use much less strobe power to match that ambient. With high speed sync, I wouldn't get the full amount of light from my strobe, so I'd have to significantly increase the power to match the ambient. Make sense?

    • @gregostudio
      @gregostudio 4 роки тому

      I see, you are comparing it to high speed sync operation of a flash. Yes high speed sync i avoid since there is no power. Now it makes sense. Thanks

    • @DavidBergmanPhoto
      @DavidBergmanPhoto 4 роки тому

      Patrick Taylor Exactly. You’ll still have power issues - especially on a sunny day. You could never get away with a single speedlite at 1/8 power in a giant modifier more than a few inches away. On an overcast day, ND is an option, although i wouldn’t want to shoot with an optical viewfinder through an ND because you can barely see anything.

  • @enduraman1
    @enduraman1 4 роки тому +3

    Instead of investing $50,000 in a medium format camera you could buy a $200 high-quality ND filter for your DSLR camera and shoot at a wide open aperture and low flashpower setting the same as with the medium format camera. As a result, you save $49,800.

    • @DavidBergmanPhoto

      ND is a good option in some cases because it will allow you to shoot at a wider aperture. But you can’t change the ratio of foreground to background without cranking up the power of your flash. Even shooting full power, you may not have enough power to darken the skyline on a sunny day. A leaf shutter allows me to use a single speedlite in a giant modifier at 1/8 power.
