      Getting trucked in football vs getting steam rolled in hockey. I played both and I'd rather get trucked in football. Id say the closest hits in football would be the dude getting blindsided on kick return. That's the same as a hockey player getting hit with his head down. Both are at speed, the difference is the pads. Football pads are designed to take the force of a hit, hockey shoulders are like paper comparatively.

      To have played football and hockey all my life I can tell you getting hit at football feels like nothing compared to getting hit on the ice when a 225 lbs guy hits you at 30mph you don't get up ever game of hockey is a punishment compared to football. They call a penalty on these hits depending if the hit is illegal like a purposeful hit to the head or kneeing someone or elbowing. These happen rarely. Look up NHL suspensions for more information on players being called for suspensions and getting penalties.

    The one thing to keep in mind is this a compilation of hits taken over the last 10+ years, not all hits are like this in fact most are relatively tame by comparison hits like these happen once a night or couple nights and often times especially the last few years they have been much more heavily penalized like they've started to do in the NFL as well altho sometimes some are still missed by the refs. Game moves fast and that is what makes a lot of these hits so heavy/impactful but it can also be very dangerous if you miss your target or get him wrong so they arent a common occurrence

    Like this so he can see how awesome this sport is;
    Checking in hockey has a big role in the game and is recommended (sometimes even encouraged!)
    Some people are often put on the ice specifically to act as a physical player and lay checks. Players don’t get penalized as long as
    - the person being checked has the puck
    - no dangerous contact (elbow to the head, aiming for the head, checking someone head-first into the boards)
    - must use the body (no stick, skates, etc)
    Fighting usually occurs because teammates are sticking up for the guy who gets hit (or if two guys just wanna have a tilt 😂)

    I just want to clarify... some of these hits were dirty hits, and most likely some of them were penalized, maybe even suspended. But a lot of them were legitimately clean hits lol.
    This is why I fucking love this game. As graceful and elegant as it is to fly at top speeds, dangle around players and deke the goalie with such finesse and instinct, it’s also gritty, tough and dangerous.
    Biggest hitters from the top of my head:
    Alex Ovechkin (also arguably the greatest player in the world)
    Dustin Byfuglien
    Alexei Emelin
    Niklas Kronwall (now retired)
    Zack Kassian

    The NHL referees for all of their faults, arguably do the best job of “letting the boys play”. You have to do something truly egregious on a hit to get a penalty. As a former hockey player, hockey is truly a man’s game.

    What is also awesome about Hockey is how much sportsmanship there actually is. It is hard to imagine that with all the hits, the fights, and chirps, but at the end of the day these guys (for the most part) have the utmost respect for every other player on the ice. Something else is you asked how these are not "fouls", hitting is completely legal given the player getting hit has possession of the puck or is at least with in the immediate area of it, and as long as your elbow is not what you lead with and the principle point of contact is not the head. And lastly, you caught it when the play-by-play said "without a helmet", yes! a hockey helmet falls off a little easier than you'd expect and it USED to be allowed to keep playing even without a helmet but as of the 2019-2020 season that rule has been changed, if you lose your helmet you must immediately try to put it back on if you can or skate straight to the bench. I am completely biased here but Hockey is the greatest sport to watch!
