To be fair, theme of technology/virtual world has been there pretty much since beginning, starting with the original trilogy of novels. If I recall correctly, most if not all of the entries that completely dropped that theme were spin-offs. At the very least I don't recall it being used much in Persona after SEBEC's machine in Persona 1. Perhaps it was also relevant to P2, but I don't have any idea how or if it connects to the first entry. I kinda just received my copies of that duology a few days back.
