  • On advice of a patient of mine I bought a Garmin Varia RVR315 Rear view Radar. I had my doubts if i really needed it. Big mistake as this makes bike commuting much safer from my point of view and everyone cycling on open roads could have benefit from using this.

    The varia lights and radar are a must have. Whenever it alerts me I always look behind me to visualize the vehicle and swerve around a bit in the middle of the lane before moving over to make myself more noticeable. In the end your life is still in the hands of the driver and you hope they aren’t looking at their stupid phone but I definitely thing the varia radar helps a lot

      Absolutely agree Christian. Actually just wanted to use it on a ride in Germany and ir did not work. I was using navigation though. Might be the problem.Got to figure that out. I seem to have some connection issue.

      Yeah it’s should work with navigation on. Mine works flawlessly with navigation on or off. I have the version with the built in light but I can imagine they would work any differently

      Thanks Christian. I will have to figure it out.

    Protip - get some velco and loop it through the hole on the mount and around the seat post. Back up in case the band breaks

      Yeh aren't they wonderful. They have been there for a couple of weeks and I guess almost no one comes along there as they are next to "Rhijn Kanaal" and it's not a bike path but sement slabs. I have made it a hobbly kind of path with my fan club ♧

    Radar cihazları güzel fakat çok iri. Ufak bir şey olsa cihazıma alırdım. Arkada çalınmaya müsait ve dikkat çeken bir görüntüsü var

      They are very ugly indeed. Much too large too.

    Trying to understand the rear radar thingy. Does it just mean that you make sure to keep to the side when you know a car is coming?

    • @Barryridesbikes
      @Barryridesbikes  Рік тому +4

      Often when you riding the wind blows head on or in such a way that you can not hear and anticipate on a oncoming car. By anticipate I mean I might cover the middle of the lane and at the last moment move over to the right to make the car see me or I might go onto the gravel if the car is speeding. Or it's a scary truck. I wake up at night sometimes thinking of a close call where a car passed me at high speed so close that I feel the wind of the rear view mirror on my elbow. Cars passing fast or close is actually my biggest fear on the bike. This warns you and you can anticipate.

      @@Barryridesbikes I fully agree. Adding that I've used the older version (RTL501) with built in rear light for quite many years now. The light starts flashing as a vehicle closes in. This actually has an effect on the drivers who in turn give me more space when passing. Also, a great thanks to @Garmin who has continued sending firmware updates to this old, but still fully functional, model. The updates have improved its effectiveness. Even battery capacity seems not to have deteriorated (subjectively).

      Hi Anders. I guess the light is a better option but I mostly have lights on my bike so I just did not want another light. BTW How do you check for software updates on these gadgets? Can you please let me know?

      @@Barryridesbikes Hi, there was a.Garmin Windows application when I first bought it. Now my Edge 530 does the updates for the Varia too. Hope it helps
