My name is Barry van Jaarsveld
Who the heck is Barry?
I am a ex- elite triathlete and started riding in 1984. In real life I am a chiropractor.
This channel is about cycling and health. I also build my own bikes which can be a risky business as actually i am a chiropractor.
Born and bread in South Africa, riding my bike in The Netherlands is one journey of discovery as it's so beautiful. I race mountain bike marathons and will soon be doing my first gravel race.
I raced as a triathlete in South Africa and the United States of America and was on the South African Triathlon Invitation Team 1989.
Currently i am racing the Sforz MTB Cup in the Netherlands and Germany. I finished in 4th place in my age-group in 2017 and 2018 - 50+
Thank you for watching my channel.

Gravel One Fifty:
I rode the UCI - Gravel World Series Peize, Netherlands and it was a great experience to say the least. I did not realize that I had to start at the back seeing my age which was quite a damper I find. That means i would most probably stick to MTB marathons where you can start in one group, the earlier you line up the further forward you are.

Garmin 530 vs. Garmin 130 | Which gradient is correct?
Переглядів 34828 днів тому
I am back in the Vosges and brought my 130 with to check and compare the gradient to the 530. The 530 is my go everywhere Garmin as I love the back to start function when I am riding in unknown areas. Unfortunately I have had had some gradient problems with the 530 NOH model, same as with the first 530 and wanted to know what the difference really was. Also i like to know what the gradient is w...

I was super motivated to race the first race on the 21 of April in Kellerwald (80km ). Unfortunately after being healthy the whole winter, 3 days before the race i got a bout of flu. This means I will miss the 2nd race on Sunday 2 June in Hunsruck ( 80km ) as well. I am not 100% yet so it;s been a rough ride getting back in shape. A pity about dnf after all that effort.
It's actually only my 2nd DNF in 10 years of off road racing. I just had the wrong tyres but no one expected that. 👎
Holymoly that doesnt look like dutch gravel, more like Mississippi mudpies
You right mate. It was nasty. I actually lay horizontal in one of those puddles.
😮
My gosh, what a mud mate. Seems like nightmare to me for sure! 🙃
Actually it was ok but at some stage as you came around a corner and saw another mud section it became boring. 👎
@@Barryridesbikes I can imagine. The slow pace is also heart braking through mud.
I think youre right Barry there should be start based on ability to avoid the slowest being in the way
Dont be tempted to try the Danish gravel race. Its even worse. All single track. All of thick mud. But you get Hansens ice cream at the end.
Aaah someone that agrees. Thanx mate👍
Amerongen is my fav. At the mo. Sorry to hear about the missed races. You were looking so strong at the beginning of the year. Had two bouts of illness this year already myself. One was COVID again the other felt like COVID ffs. Knocked me back. So wet in the Hague and also in Paris for me. Started running for the first time in years to try and get some health back. Good luck mate and have a super vacation
Sad about the twice sick mate. Take care. Was also going strong till I got sick. I also run again. Just a bit. Try the back of Leersum. That's the latter part of video. Really brilliant.
@@Barryridesbikes thats a top tip. Will try Leersum
I know what you mean. Has the potential to super smooth and flowey. I also have only 110 travel front and rear. Should be enough in NL but bumps and roots take their toll.
Yeh they could surely make snakerun much better forsure 💥
As nice seeing the sunshine, for a while😂
What a spring mate? Horrible 🤣
Still looking in great shape Barry. Former elite athlete still shows!💪.
I feel the old age creeping up bud😁
I had a Garmin 800 back in 2010. Amazing at the time but adding maps was a pain. Then along came Wahoo. So easy to use fantastic connectivity via an app on your smart phone left Garmin way behind. Clearly thats not the case anymore and Garmin are back at the top (but surprising error on the 530, clearly very wrong) but my Wahoo roam still works great so Ive no need to change. Great vacation location. Same as last year.
Same place mate. I was thinking of Wahoo but everything I have is Garmin. It just seems easier. That saying: The 530 is perfect for me in The Netherlands because we don't have gradient. 😁 Maybe it a dutchie only model. 🤣
Perfect sticking with Garmin and will also work with your varia. Maybe your model is a dutchie no gradient model?
Btw. I love your videos and the effort you put into them. Drone footage etc. Very smooth but def time consuming
Can Garmin post correct your elevation ?
No it seems not mate. This is a NOH version. Cost me a xtra 100 euro already. NoH..newly overhauled model...means they already tried for 100 euro then.
130 rules!
The 530 is super cool if it comes to navigation, power graphs and back to start function. The gradient has to be a hiccup. The rest is great. Yes the 130 is great mate.
@@Barryridesbikes I just like the size and function of the 130.I've heard the power graphics are pretty cool on the 530.
I also like the 130 👍
Throw the 530 in a lake Barry.
No I will give it to a chap on Thursday. 😁
Any specific exercises you recommend to even out the SI? Ive done the shotgun method and hip raises to help a little. But still feel part of the right SI or innominate poking out on the right side, tightness in the right back side lower ribs, torso rotation tightness, and constant tightness on the lower gracilis by the vmo. PTs and fitters only recommended insoles wedges and glute medius exercises.
Thanks for the question. PT's are not wrong in this case. The SI joint is a bugger. What I always recommend to patients is taking a hockey/cricket ball or a hard rubber ball, putting it in the groove of the SI joint and leaning against the wall for a couple of minutes. The ball could be placed at different levels/ inch higher or lower ect. I've found this to really work well. No extra movement is needed, just keep on putting force on the joint.
Speed pedelec its a joke
The speed pedelec or the video? I agree on the speed pedelec as I sweat my butt off and these guys do nothing. They always in for a chat while I work my butt off.
@@Barryridesbikes i Mean the speed pedelec ofc. I Mean you need all these registration and all that for riding these bikes. And you need to push Hard Even on a speed pedelec to hold that 28 mph. For me its a normal bike and all bikes should run 28 mph without registration.
I agree...maybe a money making gimmick by governments. I am not sure.
I believe they run 30mph in The Netherlands. I could be wrong.
Nice video! Hopefully you're back to full strength soon!
Thanx bud, once we see the sun I guess it will be ok. Crazy weather here...ok crap weather. 😁
Looks like some really cool trails in Amerongen. Awesome Canyon Lux 👊
They are really good and a lot of fun. Yeh, the greatest fully there is.💪
good effort guys, Barry well done!
Many thanks Derek

8kg backpack, are you smuggling gold nuggets? 🤣
How did you guess!
@@Barryridesbikes 8kg is quite something mate!
@@johnnyweismuller579 Well I carry 2 laptops, two phones, pin machine, puncture kit and some warm clothes I had on in the morning. Make that 9kg. Oh yes and some gold nuggets.
Awesome route for a commute!
It really is! Specially if it's dry.
Thanks for the tip, It fixed my issue
Glad it helped
Awesome ride by the team. Well done Barry!
Thanks 👍Tough one, i was tired. Phew
I did that once with a tractor towing a trailer. The trailer tyre suddenly popped off with a very loud bang. I nearly shit myself :-D
That is funny...also scary
🤣
I don't know Barry. That seems a bit risky to me.
Could be mate, but I feel quite sure about what I am dong. The distance i keep should be enough.
Glad you didn't have to hit the brakes! 😬
Me too! It is a bit risky in the rain as the roads tend to be a bit greasy.
What's up with the hear rate mate...223 ???
I saw that on the Zwift power files, thought it was due to overheating but there must be a problem with the strap.
I know nothing about bicycles, but man, that casette is SEXY!!!
Ha Ha Tom...cyclists find that as well. The cleaner the cooler.
Shiny and clean as it should be 🤗
Yes that is a lovely look. Wish it always looked like that. Feels so good.
Always ccol to watch - the coms became worse and worse which is a pity.
Yeh i know mate. Working hard on it. It gets worse the longer the stream is on. I hear the same as you so at some stage I can hear only one team mate. It is a bit above my pay grade.
@@Barryridesbikes 🤣
Incredible! You make my day. Thanks a lot. It works!!!
Glad it works Mr. Vivas
What the f*ck is this ?
Radar cihazları güzel fakat çok iri. Ufak bir şey olsa cihazıma alırdım. Arkada çalınmaya müsait ve dikkat çeken bir görüntüsü var
They are very ugly indeed. Much too large too.
Thank you so much. Two days fighting. It worked perfectly after doing this.
You are welcome mate.
Nice! Also really glad that we're heading into Spring and (hopefully) better weather.
Me too mate. Standing on the ferry on my way home from a MTB ride. Caught in the rain again...man oh man
@@Barryridesbikes It is a rubbish March
Great move Barry! Looking cool. Might be a idea for Cube😁
They saw the bike as they helped me with the hydraulic brakes. No comment from them🤣 The rest I did myself. Really pleased with it.
Lekker soos 'n firecrecker! 🙂
Absolutely a firecracker 😁🖖
Looking good! And I know what you mean about the skill level some have. A mate of mine used to race bmx as kid and seems to just float down the trail with easy speed.
It's incredible isn't it. Then trying to figure out "how" drives me nuts 🤪
😂.
Good luck mate. First one is always the hardest!
Yeh it's a tough one too for April. A bit worried 😯
@@Barryridesbikes 😙
You sexy climber pulling faces mate!
Scary ain't it...bloody nutters🤪
I am impressed that with all the km’s in your legs doing your long commute, that being on zwift has made so much difference at the start of the (daylight) season. Its been a long wet season
Yeh Pat. I think it's the quality. You need that all year round as you get along in age. HIT I believe
I think it's just hard wor on Zwift. Specifically the fact that joining a team and racing, combined with LSD grinds to work...also missed plenty commuting due to bad weather so Zwift helped fill the gap.
Indeed an awesome moment when it starts getting light again!!!
It is marvelous isn't it. I believe when th clock goes forward I am back in the dark.🤪
Always a nice moment when you notice it’s getting light
Absolutely mate! I was quite surprised and so happy.
Things are looking up again.
Love the summer route!
Great mate. It is movie time again! 😬
Ha Ha that is right.👉 Hope to do do some awesome races too.
I am new to the team mate. I know my place.🤐 I know , i know .
There were some big efforts there by the boys mate. Well done. The trick on the first lap is to make the B's do 2-3 minute efforts to calm the rest of the team down. Everyone stays in line at a allocated spot. Then after the B's have done their efforts, the normal TTT goes ahead. Same as on the road mate...you should know this. It's calming and always faster than chaos at the start.
I am also having issues with gradient and altitude. Their is a hole in the back/bottom of the device where, I guess, the altimeter sensor is. Trouble shoot says rinse under water. I did that and it seemed to fix it for one ride. This unit I have is a NOH and has lasted me about 2.5 to 3 years trouble free. Also my turn by turn on a selected route is also not working. I'm hoping Garmin will give me a discount when I go to buy a new 540.
Hi Meghan and thanx for the tip. Yes I have a NOH as well but still having problems. I will try your tip but must say I am scared to totally flood it. Its pretty sad as my 130 does it perfectly.
Cool bikes mate...dutch city bike with disc wheels🤣
I am not sure they are dutch bikes. Called brombies I believe. Silly things mate👉
That was a hiilbilly Barry! Tough sucker.
Had bad legs and on this course there is no hiding unfortunately...actually in these TTT there never is time to hide. I remember on the road the guys used to swear at each other for missing a turn...it was brutal. 👉👀
Great amusement mate - for me then
Glad to hear that, i little less for me.😁
@@Barryridesbikes You looked fresh indeed.
Yehi was little late and had a too short of a warm up. Suffered first 10km. Then THEY arrived... the legs😁
I ride my bike almost every day. I don't ride to far. 5 miles the most so far.
Hi Eddie. 5 miles is great specially if you are riding every day. Keep at it. Cheers
5miles twice a day, 220 working days a year still add up to 3540km a year. Most normal people (i.e. those not obsessed with cycling training) would quantify that as "a lot". Keep doing it!
@@turboseize 3540 km is pretty good for sure.
Do you use radar??? Do you have blinkers yor the sides of bike not just rear???
Yes I use radar but no side lightning. That does seem to be a good idea. I used a light on my helmet but don't have it on now. Should do that again.
omg its crazy!!! thanks a lot!! love you so muchhhhh ❤❤❤❤
You're welcome!!
Work first time i tried. Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!. Cheers
