Great vlog Paul! Just when I thought I have everything I could possibly need......and you can probably guess the rest! I've ordered one and should receive it in the next couple of days! I ride mostly on back roads and feel this will be a very useful and important bit of tech. Can't wait to try it out. 👍
Cheers David. I hadn't particularly ridden through town when I filmed this but another benefit is the ease of knowing if anything is behind you turning right. I struggle with neck movement so with this only need to look back once to double-check
Great vlog Paul, I have the Garmin Varia light version and it’s an amazing piece of kit and I wouldn’t ride without it, especially around the country lanes 🙌🚴

I’ve got the Varia 510 radar with light. It’s great for warning you about cars. My wife has it on her bike and we both link our Garmins to it, so we both get the warnings. I have a Cycliq camera on the bike of my bike to record any dodgy driving. Both great bits of kit and invaluable when we are out for a ride. I think the radar picks up cars at about 150m, often before you can hear them.
It’s still too cold for shorts I think. I wear some thermal 3/4 length bottoms which are just right for this weather.

Ive had the RTL510 since 2019. Love it. You should be able to move the notification bar to the right so it aligns with reality (that they are your right shoulder )
Moving to the right would indeed be a good option
Hi Paul, I have the one with the light as well and I wouldn't be without it, an excellent piece of kit. I use mine mostly on flash mode and the flash pattern alters as traffic approaches, wouldn't trust it when changing position on the road without looking behind but while saying that it has never lied to me. Every cyclist should have one.
Yes .... I am going to do a follow up vlog too I think as using it some more has thrown more benefits. I have limited neck movement and find looking back hard so the Varia is great to save the struggle of keeping looking back for a traffic gap turning right
Paul, I’ve been running the older integrated RTL510 (ant+ only) for well over a year with a Garmin and I think it’s a game changer on back lanes especially as you can ride in pairs and drop back when a car is flagged. Once Wahoo added support for it then Garmin released the V2, RTL515 with BT and a phone app it widened its possible audience. The battery life on the radar only units is more appealing for long distance cycling mind. Thanks for the review.👏👏👏

I have the one with the light which I bought a couple of months ago. It’s a great bit of kit and an additional safety feature. I wouldn’t be without it now.

I have the new version with the light paired to my Wahoo Roam. Wouldn't ride without it now. I've had 6 cars displayed all at once on screen. Also like the colour display on screen and via LED to indicate the speed and level of threat. Only downside is the constant beeping on busy roads can be annoying and cause you to ignore it. Also if the vehicle behind slows to the same speed as you it doesn't pick it up. Mind I guess the threat level is minimal until it decides to pass.
I realise it’s more expensive but the version with the light is brilliant. They are very dependable and great on country roads when you’re riding 2 abreast. Plenty of time from warning to readjusting road position. They can be a bit scary when a car is “fast” approaching because the sound is different and if you’re on a Wahoo Roam, the left hand band changes colour from green to red and not just orange when a car is approaching at a normal speed. All good tech though to try and make us safer. Sadly, whilst you know a car is approaching, if they want to mow you down, or they’re texting, drunk or just daydreaming, they still can. I do feel lost without it on though.

Weyhey 🙌🏻 everything Jonathan Sapier said. Pleased you purchased one and you like it. As you know we have the light Varia and the very 1st edition. We’ve had them 3 years now. Definitely feel lost without it now. If ours go wrong we wouldn’t hesitate on getting another one. Does the radar effect head unit battery life? I all ready have speed,cadence & heart rate and phone on mine but have thought of getting one

Yes... It picks up motorcycles..... It picks up cycles movong faster than you are too
Being hearing impaired in one ear, I would rather go ride without my Wahoo Bolt then my Garmin Varia light. It's the best thing ever!

Wouldn’t you want to ride your bike around cars instead of some beautiful country road?
They look like a very good piece of kit.
Too expensive for me at the moment.
The only downside I can see, apart from the battery life, is that no amount of equipment a person has on their bike will stop the arseholes on the road close passing cyclists.
That Tesla is a prime example.
I know you would have a warning but it wouldn't have stopped them close passing.

As motorcyclists say "Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down".

Cheers Ian ..... I get about the close passing but being more aware ( and also seeing the speed the car is approaching ) gives you an extra warning to check visually where the car is placed. I've got used to having it real quick

Why don't you just buy a mirror, at least with a mirror you can check if the approaching car is giving you enough clearance. I can't understand why cyclist don't use a mirror, anyone can afford one. I wouldn't be without mine, and it would be my choice if I had to choose between the Varia or a mirror
@@richardevans9465 yes... Mirror is an option but the radar gives an audible warning and LED lights often well before you hear a vehicle, and one of my regular routes has a long 35mph downhill so the radar suits as you can keep eyes ahead. But i agree with you its surprising more people dont have a mirror fitted
