    ✅ About this video:
    As we continue this journey, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our routines and decrease our stress. Internet access is always on our minds and is a big part of our decision making when we research locations. With Cindy and I, Harold, having to work full time along with two teenagers in a virtual high school, we need solid internet access. Let's not forget about UA-cam videos! Today, we are installing a Winegard Gateway 4g Lte Wifi Router. We went with this option since our RV already had the Winegard 360 dome on the roof. This is compatible with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. We will show you how we installed the gateway router along with performing a speed test. Spoiler alert... It was faster!

    This was a huge help. We had already got a Pepwave Max Transit duo CAT12 LTE Advanced Router but you gave me the idea of using the sim card in our new Verizon tablet in the Pepwave instead and just using the wi-fi signal with the tablet.
    Thank you so much! Hope to meet you guys one day.

    they say you should avoid wire nuts in a camper. Most OEMs now use those snap clips for wires (Wago style).
    this Winegard stuff is actually part of an acquisition they did with WiFi Ranger (which we had in our previous camper and loved it). He says you need to switch to 4G, but if you are at a campground with great wifi, you can switch it back to wifi and use their network bandwidth (and sometimes faster speeds). But you have to mess with the settings and understand a little bit about computer networking.
    The benefit of this gateway is that everything INSIDE the camper is always set to the gateway for the network, no matter if you are 4G or Wifi to campground, you don't have to mess with all your devices (Smart TV, Alexa, phones, etc), they will all work the same every day!
    Great video. I'm ordering my gateway now!

    Great video! We have this system in our MPG Cruiser and works great. The only thing is that we have a Prepaid Data Plan $55 per 30 days with 100GB from AT&T. You said that you are using your iPad’s SIM card, and if that is correct and you say is working for you, I’m going to try with mine iPad SIM card because my plan is unlimited and I will save $35 per month. 😳💪🏼They said that will not work so that’s why I got the prepaid plan.

    4:38 next time use blue splice wire adapter. All you do is slice with the wire to saparate them. Then clips one with Red, then the other black. Or (positive + and Negative - )
    Good luck. I have one and love it. I'm hear to find just an unlimited hotspot for mine.

      Thanks for the tip! It’s hard to find bc some SIM cards work and some do not. My ATT wouldn’t work, but Verizon did. Not sure about TMobile. FMCA offers a T-MOBILE unlimited plan for $45/month. Not sure if you have looked into that or not. Have a great day.

      Thanks! You may have to login to the router for it to find service after installing the card. Some will work, some will not. You will need the SIM card adapter bc it takes the larger card. Also, just be aware that if you have a data limit, it’s easy to use up data with it up there. We found that out very quickly.

I'm happy to report that our service connected immediately also and appears to be working very well. Great video and very helpful. I am trying to understand how to use the winegard installed on my Grand Design 22RBE and this video was very helpful. I'm not the most knowledgeable
    around sim cards, wifi etc. but you have helped a lot. One thing I am somewhat confused on is your use of the Verizon sim card: Is this a sim card out of an iPad that you have connected to your account? If so this renders your iPad now to wifi only, when the card is inserted in the winegard. Right? I hope this makes sense, and I apologize for being so dumb on the subject. But I think if I'm assuming right I just need to add a data plan to my account. (instead of a jetpack). Thanks so much. Hope to see you at next years TN Grand Design rally!

    • @1StrangeAdventure
      @1StrangeAdventure  2 роки тому

      Hi Mark, You are correct, The SIM came from our iPad. First is was an extra line we had in a phone but put it in the iPad for a better signal. (The iPad seemed to have a better antenna) So we just took it from that and put it in the winegard. It did make the iPad a Wi-Fi only device but it’s ok since we have a good signal from the winegard 😊
      I hope this helps but please let us know if we can help answer anything else.

      Glad you enjoyed it. I was able to take my SIM out of my iPad (it's still in there) and use it. I only had to log into the router setup on my computer and tell the Winegard to search for LTE. It found it! The ATT card did not work.

      @1StrangeAdventure  2 роки тому +2

      Hi there and welcome to RV life! It can seem overwhelming at first for sure, but take it a little at a time and you can work through it. Internet really depends on your travel lifestyle. Are you going to be mostly stationary? Are you going to be near cities most of the time or are you exploring the unknown? Each have very different needs. We prefer to explore as much as we can and sometimes that is in remote areas. We have a plan for Verizon, ATT, TMobile and Starling. We both work full-time with lots of zoom calls and our kids go to a virtual high school. We have high internet demand. If you want to email us with specific questions, we are happy to help how ever we can. Strangefamily@1strangeadventure.com

    • @1StrangeAdventure
      @1StrangeAdventure  2 роки тому

      Great questions! We did not use an on/off switch so it just stays on. It’s a very minimal draw. We didn’t even consider using the LCI control bc the wires you need for the install are already up there. We leave it on bc we are even able to use the Wi-Fi in the truck on travel day. Great range and easily covers the RV.

    • @1StrangeAdventure
      @1StrangeAdventure  2 роки тому

      Great question! Both have pros and cons. I would say that the range on this is much better. We can use it while traveling in the truck and still have full signal. I would also say that the antennas are a bit bigger are able to draw a stronger signal on its own. That has been our experience.

    Does the gateway have a better receiving signal for 4G LTE than you cell phone in remote locations? I have my camper on a remote piece of property in rural Florida and only get 1 bar of signal if I'm lucky. I'm looking for a solution that will enable WiFi and improve my cell reception. If this unit can receive a stronger signal then my phone, I can use WiFi for calls and texting so it would solve my issue. Let me know if you know. Thanks!

      We are using the data plan from our iPad. I'm not sure what the exact wording would be but maybe it would help to mention it was for an iPad? Or even a data hotspot? Although, they may ask you to produce the devices. I don't know if they will just give a SIM card. Hoping that helps but can't guarantee it.

    Great information. I found when I installed mine (same year/same floor plan) that there was a terminated power wire with those quick release clips you find throughout the 12 volt system. Did you have to notify Verizon and add the IMEI of the router to your account?

    • @1StrangeAdventure
      @1StrangeAdventure  2 роки тому

      We had no other wires in the ceiling and the orange looped wire was the one connected to the cap as well. We did not have to notify Verizon. Our ATT plan said access denied, but Verizon connected on the first attempt.

    Does it also act as a wifi booster? We have wifi in our RV park but we are a little far from the source so the signal is low. Would this boost that signal signal since its an antenna on the roof of the RV?

    • @1StrangeAdventure
      @1StrangeAdventure  2 роки тому

      Great question. It does have a strong signal that we can access from anywhere in the rig. Even in the truck on travel days! What the antenna on the top is doing is allowing you to connect to wifi signals that are much further way. Signals that you will not see with your phone. In theory, you could connect the Winegard to the wifi signal you have already and that would give you more range on your signal. It will not increase speeds but you may be able to be further away from the source. Hope this helps.

      Hello! Great questions! Our Verizon card is still in there and working. 🤞 it continues to work! It has been a great addition. It typically has better speeds than our Verizon phones unless we are in a 5G area, since it doesn’t support 5G. It really shines where Verizon signal is on the weaker side. It’s still dependent on some sort of signal which is why we have 3 carriers for redundancy. I think it has been a great addition. I will warn you though. With a Wi-Fi signal that reaches end to end, you can eat up some data very quickly. Just keep an eye on it unless you have the unicorn, unlimited with no throttling plan. 😊
