    Impressive, being able to couple units together is a big hit for me. Glad to see the modern units getting a decent upgrade. I wonder if we'll see a Voyager done to similar standards in future.

      I’d like to think they’ll tackle the voyager and Hornby look at the pendilino as well.

      hi richard
      I would love to see Bachmann do the the class 220 and the class 221 voyagers in dcc version and a retool on them for say day and night running lighting in the coaches etc and sound fitted versions.

    Wow that really captures it well. This is how I remember them on the Brighton to Wales run after the 155s and 156s came off. I remember when they had the window in the front (now sadly covered by a yellow panel) and of the driver had his blind up you could see out of the front of the train We used to get 158/8 units on the south coast and in more recent years the three car 158/9 version. Mostle with an extra driving car in the middle but there was one proper 3 car unit too. We used to get 159s as well back in NSE and early SWT days.

    Hey Dave, Fun fact: There are class 158's in Thailand. But its pretty rare now a days to see one running as some are out of service and I think 2 are left in service. old livery was regional railways livery.

      @@Haymarket47 In truth mate, there is a lot of sad people about that like to take it out on others for their own failings in life. They exist to make everyone else miserable but thankfully they are a minority. That said I strongly blame UA-cam and I am pointing the finger at them because UA-cam is the ONLY platform that allows trolls and haters to abuse content creators and the dislike button gives those eggplants the green light to abuse video creators that spend a long time making these videos. I bet this one took Dave about a day minimum to make this upload when factoring the filming, processing and then the upload time. Personally I think the dislike button should be dropped like on other platforms because why it is so important that a viewer has the option to dislike a video. I disliked a lot of TV channels when I had a TV but that was what the remote control was for ;).

    Interesting review. Bachmann has made several revisions to their coupling system. The CEP, the 2EPB and the Desiro have the same drawbars, but the Blue Pullman has a completely different arrangement. This class 158 is a different arrangement again. Makes it difficult if spare parts become unobtainable in the future! Thanks for uploading.

    An excellent model, the cab mould doesn;t appear to be an issue as first expected. My only issue is the front emergency air connectin cover (under the drivers window) is post 1998 design so won't have been seen with RR livery (and some had the original cover up to 2012).

    Hi Dave, another great video thank you.
    I picked up the 'normal' Regional Railways one a few days ago from my local model shop. I have to agree with everything you've said, I think this is on par with the Realtrack 156 (if not better actually, but it's close!)
    £220 is expensive but to me it's worth every penny. Everything about it is absolutely fantastic! It's the best second generation DMU you can buy in my opinion. Even the headlights with that dull yellowy glow are absolutely spot on and just how I remember them.
    It's certainly been worth the wait! 😁
    PS - if I was forced to nitpick anything, I would say the beige stripes are ever so slightly too dark, but that really is scraping the barrel to find fault.
    Here's hoping for an Express variant, and WYPTE too!
    Have a good Christmas and all the best for the new year. 🥳

    Nice review Dave. Maybe a small segment demonstrating the different lighting functionalities as you've done in other reviews, but a nice video no less. I can tell you're smitten with it, mine has arrived but as it's a Christmas pressie to myself, I'm waiting till Weds to open it up!
    As a side note, Bachmann have maybe rightly taken a lot of stick over their release schedule recently, and to an extent lost a little trust and goodwill from UK outline railway modellers, especially with the likes of Accurascale, Cavalex, and ofcourse Hattons producing very fine stock and locos, but I feel with this, the Class 90, and indeed the Ransomes crane and rolling stock such as the Freightliner flats they have proven that they are still a serious force in the market, and are definitely still one of the 'big boys'. The suite of outstanding finescale models available to us right now has arguably never been better, and that can never be a bad thing for us. The wallet maybe!
    On the Sprinter front, have you any interest in a Realtrack 156 Dave? I picked a sound fitted super sprinter one up at Warley, and again it's an absolute jewel! Looking forward to seeing them next to each other.
    Have a nice Christmas.

      I totally agree with you about costs. I have had a rant about this myself but you get to watch these movies for FREE. There is also a catalogue of FREE movies you can watch that Dave has posted over the years. I personally benefit from watching all the material that people post on UA-cam about this subject. Ok, they may or may not get freebies or discounts but It would be sad if they all stopped doing this for everyone. :-)

    • @thetrainspotter7
      @thetrainspotter7 4 роки тому

      cedarcam He gets paid by UA-cam to make the video so the train is effectively more than free. Its actually making him money. The fact he doesn't mention the price in the video once considering its the most expensive DMU in model railway history says it all.

    • @cedarcam
      @cedarcam 4 роки тому +1

      I have no adds on my channel so cannot say how much they make for him but I did not think it was that much. As far as I know that's the only income he will get Nothing from youtube for making them. As for the price It is a lot to pay for a DMU that although improved is not outstanding enough to justify so much. I would rather have a new Heljan 25 which although less finely detailed will probably be more value for money. My other locos run very smoothly and better than Bachmanns Their 05 shunter is superb The 03 I just got for Xmas is not half as good and cost a lot for what it is.

    Hi Dave Its me I'm a tree LOL Good review of what looks to be a great model. I have one of the original ones with Scotrail branding which never gets used so doubt I will buy this one unless they do a Scotrail in future. I bought the other with the intention of running 2 time periods as well as a 156 in GGTPA orange black livery. Best wishes for the New Year and looking forward to more reviews like this which are I think some of the best as you give an honest opinion of the models.

  • @TheStueyboy43

    Hi Dave, great video as always. I have enjoyed your videos on all the different subjects you have covered.
    You mentioned Bachmann releasing a dummy set to go with the powered ones, to keep the costs down. The problem is motors/gears costs a few pounds only and must be only a small part of the development and building costs so I feel an unmotorised version would be pretty much the same price, hence why Bachmann do not do this with other models, class 20s etc

  • @Cliffjumper24
    @Cliffjumper24 4 роки тому

    That looks pretty good!!
    I have several (6 units) of Bachmann's original 158's and they work brilliantly so I'm unlikely to buy any of these (as good as they are). In fact, I'm more likely to buy other people's cast-offs.
    I'd like to get another 3-car set and one of the later batch without the 'Express' branding.
    I would like to give them a modification with better lighting and underframe details.
    Dave, the 'Scotrail' branding didn't come in until late 1992 and into 1993 (by which time the Scotrail 158's had snowplough skirting) so you may not want to fit that branding, but the 'Express' lettering is available from Railtec transfers.
    It'd be a couple of evenings work to remove the numbers and 'Regional Railways' branding, mask off and spray a white section where the 'Express' lettering will go... and then a couple of days later when the paint is dry, fit the Express branding and fit new numbers appropriate for a Scottish 158 (158701 to 158745).
    Given how you did the Oxford Mk3's, I think this is within your skillset for this project!

    I agree with Haymarket 47 - why did people vote this down? Not that YT cares - any interaction is good interaction. The sound was a little weak and a speaker upgrade would be a good idea - why don't manufacturers put decent speakers in from new, they cost pence? Dave, I did notice you had it running in the daytime with nightime lights on - naughty boy, particularly when you said they're switchable! Good review as we've come to expect and it's always nice to see the layout. Happy Christmas to you and yours Dave, Mike

    Hi Dave, As a modeller of steam I have to say that it is a very impressive DMU from Bachmann and I can imagine them selling like 'hot cakes'. I agree with Haymarket 47 about the negative dipsticks who give a thumbs down. You can take heart in the fact that the thumbs up far out way the negative idiots. As a steam buff I can recognise quality when I see it, be it diesel or steam. This model ticks all the right boxes and I`m more that happy to give it the thumbs up. Cheers Greg

      Hi Greg. Thank you for your great honest feedback. It’s certainly selling well, the shop I got it from (I’d pre ordered some years ago!) has sold all of its initial allocation within the first day!
      Regarding the ‘dipsticks’ (I love that phrase, I’ve not used that for years, so might start using it again haha), you always get people who don’t watch the video but instantly give it a negative response. However they’re doing me a favour, as UA-cam tallies up likes and dislikes and the more a video gets (of either) the more youtube promotes my video. So the joke’s on them. I am sure I know who some of them are as well. It’s just a bit of jealousy from those individuals (I don’t know why), but it’s fine by me!

    Great review there Dave. I think I am tempted to get a nice GWR version or an EMT version that operate around Nottingham where I used to live for a few years. I now live in a place that is dominated by CAF DMU's mate but they are lovely trains to ride on. Here is a like from me and thanks for this videos because I am getting one in the new year :). Just a question about the functioning BSI couplers. I wonder if Bachmann will sell these are spares? As I would like to add them to the Bachmann Class 150 and the Hornby Class 153 and maybe the Realtrack Class 156. This would allow me to make some realistic formations. Not sure if Scotland has any Class 153's there but we had them on the Nottingham to Skegness workings with Class 156/158 units coupled to them.

    Looks to be a good model, nice close coupling. A note about the dummy set you are requesting - I doubt Bachmann would look at it. Rapido touched on doing dummy locos for one of their H0 releases (cabbage car), which in prototypical sense is a locomotive with the engine removed. They made the model with a motor, because all they would save by not including it was around $5 per model, so I would assume the same case would apply here.

    An excellent review, thanks for posting. The 158 sounds great and the running looks nice and smooth. However.....to my eye the beige colour is wrong. Much too dark. In this respect I think the original Bachmann 158 was more accurate. Because of that, I will be hanging on to my existing two units. It's a shame because I was looking forward to upgrading them.

    just a quick question which one out of the Bachmann class 158 and the realtrack class 156 do you prefer and if you didn't have either which one would you go for personally for your layout.
    and what is your overall thought on the Bachmann class 158.

    if needed maybe able to get it re-branded in the future, they are impressive, but i still dont think i could spend the money on them if i still had 00, the one thing i dont like is the guards buzzer, inless your, stood right next to the drivers window or on the train near the cab then you wouldn't hear it, wonder how long till we have models with opening doors

    Excellent review and excellent model. For me personally they don't fit my requirements currently and the price is difficult to justify unless it was must have for my layout plan.
    On the point of dummy units, they're unlikely to be done as apparently they are difficult sellers and the cost to produce wouldn't be much different from a motored one as most of the cost is in the livery and small details, the motor being a very small part of the overall cost. So I don't think we'll ever see dummy 4mm units.

    Nice to see Bachmann are using Zimmo sound chips. Far superior in my oppion. I think function 2 active brake is superb and the overall driving experience second to none. Does need a speaker upgrade though. I think the sound chip accurate that if won't let you pull away if the doors are open, as in you've not pressed the function for doors closing after opening them. As in the real thing.

    Great review Dave. To say it's a few years late it just does not look right,and I think it could be more detailed. I remember many years ago when I purchased a 3 car 158,and at the time it was light years ahead of any DMU.........it made the hornby 156 look very cheap and nasty. There looks to be improvements over the old 158 but I think I will stick to my original 158s.

    Yet another frustrating Bachmann hit and miss issue. I received my unit from a reputable retailer only to find that the bogie makes contact with the underside detail and derails on 4th radius curves and Peco points. I really don't see why I should have to file down or snap off underside detail from a brand new release. Come on Bachmann!! It's getting to the point now where I am going to stop buying their products. :-(
