Bernie Grundman is an American audio engineer.
He is most known for his mastering work and his studio, Bernie Grundman Mastering, which he opened in 1984 in Hollywood. The studio, which includes engineers Chris Bellman, Patricia Sullivan, and Mike Bozzi, mastered 37 projects which received Grammy Award nominations in 2005. In 1997 he opened a studio in Tokyo.[1]
Grundman and his studio have both won numerous TEC Awards, including Best Mastering Facility and several production awards.[2]
Previously, Grundman worked at Contemporary Records and then was head of the A&M Records mastering department in Los Angeles. Now his studio also has been established in Tokyo, Japan with engineer Yasuji Maeda.
Thriller is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson, released on November 30, 1982, by Epic Records. It was produced by Quincy Jones, who had previously worked with Jackson on his 1979 album Off the Wall. Jackson wanted to create an album where "every song was a killer". With the ongoing backlash against disco music at the time, he moved in a new musical direction, resulting in a mix of pop, post-disco, rock, funk, and R&B sounds. Thriller foreshadows the contradictory themes of Jackson's personal life, as he began using a motif of paranoia and darker themes. Paul McCartney appears on "The Girl Is Mine", the first credited appearance of a featured artist on a Michael Jackson album. Recording took place from April to November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, with a budget of $750,000.
Thriller became Jackson's first number-one album on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart, where it spent a record 37 non-consecutive weeks at number one, from February 26, 1983, to April 14, 1984. Seven singles were released: "The Girl Is Mine", "Billie Jean", "Beat It", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' ", "Human Nature", "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)", and "Thriller". They all reached the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, setting a record for the most top 10 singles from an album, with "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" reaching number one. Following Jackson's performance of "Billie Jean" in the Motown 25 television special, where he debuted his signature moonwalk dance, the sales of the album significantly increased, selling one million copies worldwide per week. The "Thriller" music video was premiered to great anticipation in December 1983 and played regularly on MTV, which also increased the sales.
With 32 million copies sold worldwide by the end of 1983, Thriller became the best-selling album of all time. It was the best-selling album of 1983 worldwide, and in 1984 it became the first album to become the best-selling in the United States for two years. It set industry standards with its songs, music videos, and promotional strategies influencing artists, record labels, producers, marketers, and choreographers. The success gave Jackson an unprecedented level of cultural significance for a black American, breaking racial barriers in popular music, earning him regular airplay on MTV and leading to a meeting with US President Ronald Reagan at the White House. Thriller was among the first albums to use music videos as promotional tools; the videos for "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Thriller" are credited for transforming music videos into a serious art form.
Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time, with sales of 70 million copies worldwide. It is the second-best-selling album in the United States and was certified 34× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2021. It won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards at the 1984 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, while "Beat It" won Record of the Year. Jackson also won a record-breaking eight American Music Awards at the 1984 American Music Awards. The album has been a frequent inclusion in lists of the greatest albums of all time. In 2008, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In the same year, the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry of "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant recordings". 45 rpm

I know this will sound like an exaggeration but that was absolutely the most enjoyable informative video chat I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I especially loved what Chad said about having a unique chance in his lifetime to do something really special for the love of it - and what it means to him. He is a unique individual, worthy of all the respect and praise he will undoubtably have coming to him long after he is gone. And thank you Michael for all of the thought and passion you put into your channel. That was very very enjoyable.

Very well put, I could have not it myself. Once in a while you find something really interesting and informative and I am glad Mike 45 did this. I also watched him on the day he went to a record convention in Germany. All these guys in the interview had real passion and it's not a job if you really enjoy what you do. At one time I could see myself in the music industry at one time when I was young I thought of being a Radio DJ or maybe working for a music magazine like Creem Magazine. Also I have a pretty large music collection but nothing like Mike 45, plus he has the system to rock or chill out in his music room. Keep up the good work I will be looking out albums that you guys put out.

A couple comments have come to mind listening to this. I own ten Mofi's. Two older ones and eight newer ones. I wouldn't claim that I could tell there was a digital component. That never crossed my mind. What I have observed though, is that the two older Mofi's, I have listened to over and over again. The newer ones I listened to once and they went on the shelf. They never came back off the shelf until I listened to them again due to the recent revelations about digital. I don't know if that is just a coincidence or not.

It would be great to see see a video from some engineers that are advocates of half speed mastering and/or those who intentionally use a digital step in their mastering process. Bernie and Chad are huge analogue fans, but it would also be good to see a video from the other side on why some prefer to use digital. Some use this even though they have access to the original masters tapes. James Guthrie (Pink Floyd), Miles Showell (Abbey Road Half Speed), Barry Grint (Alchemy mastering at Air Studios, who does a lot of half speed cuts). I love my Doors LPs cut from analogue, but also love my Pink Floyd and The Who albums with digital steps in. I really enjoyed this video.

Thanks Michael, these long form discussions are so informative. I really have learned so much more about the various processes skills and creativity involved in the production of audiophile quality music be it vinyl or digital formats such as SACD. As a youngster I never really gave a second thought other than bemusement at the various markings etched into the dead wax on singles and albums- much like some ancient Masonic style cult. one the key ingredients these real experts in their field display is a deep love and passion for music of all genres and how they strive for audio perfection- they know its a journey and not a destination and is of course subjective. Listening to Bernie speak he is a "vinyl whisperer" and I never really appreciated how much had to be considered when cutting those masters to ensure. they play and sound good on a wide range of equipment- it's really a game of compromise. Thanks to everyone for the amazing work they do and the immense pride in their work. It really is appreciated by so many across the world.

As a Musician, Audiophile and Electronics technician that also has a degree in Nursing, i would go a step further. The musical experience is not limited to the ears. We also feel music. We have air cavities in our bodies. From the large air space in our lungs, oesophagus and mouth, to the small eustachian tubes that link to our middle ear.
Even any trapped wind we may have in our bowl, they all contain air that have an individual resonant frequency.
Remember, even deaf people enjoy music.
We don't as much just "hear" music.... we "feel it".
This is why we say we are "moved" by music!

    • @markusberzborn6346

Yes, everything makes a difference, be it a smaller or a larger one. Otherwise there would be no explanation for records sounding different although using the same source tape or even the same digital source.

I'm going to go out on a limb we're going to see part, or all of the Rolling Stones catalog released by Acoustic Sounds based on Chad's comments. Hear me out: 1. Chad said one of the records he just worked on with Ryan "smoked the dog shit" out of the original, which was also cut at Sterling Sound by Ted (Jensen?) or Greg (Calbi?). Both of these dudes worked on Stones stuff through the 80s. 2. Chad has repeatedly said the next 10 years are going to be amazing. I gotta think he landed a big artist catalog, like fucking whale big, to back that up. 3. The Stones have been supportive of multiple reissues, including MoFi and Abbey Road half Speed masters over the years. The Stones also seem sympathetic to cashing in as long as they can and cementing their legacy. AP can help them with that. 4. Chad loves classic rock and blues, and the Stones HAVE GOT to be on his bucket list for his company. If the Stones were the last artist he landed for AS, that would be a lifetime achievement for him. 5. And finally the big one, Chad said "It ain't the Beatles". :) If that isn't enough, In the interview with Steve Westman a month ago, he added "Someone else can get the Beatles. Someone else can get Pink Floyd," also implying the rights for LZ were still a challenge. Maybe it's just wishful thinking... but if there's a big band announcement coming, I think it's the Stones!

I love these guys and what they're doing for audio, especially analog. In addition to what they are saying and with great respect for these engineers, I also like those relatively rare direct-to-disc recordings where minimal engineering is done. no mixing, no or minimal (as Bernie puts it) manipulation of the recorded sound. I want to hear as close as possible what was played & recorded - what went on that original tape (before any engineers got their hands on it).

Thank you Michael for this great important session . All are the best in their field . Chad is a bit overselling but with his enthusiasm he's pushing forward the industry. The humble way and professionalism of Bernie and Ryan for such influential people is exemplary. I liked how you gave them the stage when needed. Again thank you.

So happy to hear there is still two big announcements coming this year. When I saw the announcement for the Kind of Blue 45rpm I thought that was one of them and was a bit disappointed being that we already knew that was coming. Chad continues to deliver. Can't wait to hear what the titles are.

Wow, what a thought-provoking chat! Honestly, the info about an inadvertent "positive feedback loop" effect caused by streaming services on reducing the loudness war is most peculiar. (Never thought about that). Chad is killing it, as always, one of the nicest and funniest and most relatable people in that industry, hands down, by a long mile. (Even though he was constantly talking over Michael and interrupting everyone, haha)

This is a really great discussion, Recording engineers need to give this a listen! Every new recording studio environment is so far removed from actual music, I know that sounds bizarre to say but it really is true in so many ways. Hearing all of you guys discuss this somehow brings it all around that the recording studio is about the end result of the piece of art you are making.

Michael, thank you so much for this live streeaming session. I listened to the whole 2.5 hrs+ as it was such a great discussion with 3 of the titans in the world of audiophile vinyl. To have Bernie, Ryan and Chad on board was beyond outstanding. This was every bit as interesting and insightful as the session you did with Kevin Gray. To have Mssrs. Grundman and share their knowledge in the art of mastering and re-mastering was amazing. Equally enjoyable was Chad's insight into the way he channels his passion into producing the best pressed and remastered vinyl lps restores my faith in the ethics he preaches and executes in his business. Kassem's honesty and strong opinions in giving the consumer superior products keeps me as a loyal customer to Analogue Productions because I know he is a no bullshit guy. I will have to re-watch the video because there was so much stuff discussed I know i missed something. And one last comment, I hope Bernie gets his shot at re-mastering Thriller the right way. He is a God to the Vinyl world. Thanks again Michael for all you do; you have been a great resource with your reviews and commentary.

I can’t help think there is something cooking there. The way Chad was talking and gesticulating at that makes me think AS have a “thriller” release in the works. But can this be realistic given MoFi are releasing a One-Step, albeit at 33 rpm?

Great interview Michael. I have the Zeppelin II that Greg Calbi (GC in the deadwax) mastered and cut. I think he did it about 4 years or so after Robert Ludwigs (first mastering and cutting) of this classic. Greg's version of this album is so good that I could say it's pretty close to what RL did and might be the 2nd best or perhaps Bernie's cut for Classic (since acquired by Chad of course). I would like to see Greg Calbi do an interview. One of my favs is Chad and Bernie discussing the Steely Dan reissues and another with Donald Fagen. BTW, I have to say that Chad's UHQR45 of Kind Of Blue is the winner hands down for that album. It's a great accomplishment to produce the definitive reference version of such a classic. I have the Mofi The Nightfly One Step and I emailed Chad about whether he and Bernie will be doing that and Donald's other great solo record Kamirakad. It's not in the works yet but despite the MOFI sounding great, I would like to hear what Analogue Productions would do with it. By the time I'm writing this, AP has released all the Steely Dan catalogue except The Royal Scam (my fav), Aja and Gaucho. 1:18:22 . Check out Bernie and Ryan, with Chad talking about DSD V PCM . Bernie gets into the nitty gritty that pretty much says it all.
