We're all racist - including the most 'woke' civil rights activists. There are racists who think people of a certain race are inferior without hating them and without wanting to deprive them of rights. Should such persons be viewed with the same disdain as militant KKK members and segregationists? I think not. But labelling them as racist kinda does that. It's not that they're not racist. It's just that the word has so many connotations that don't apply to them. We need more words.

Difficult and stressful for sure. I have 2 older sisters who were/are single working mothers. We were Army brats and our step dad literally was in desert storm, Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan. So we knew that mom being at home taking care of the family was necessary, but it wasn't close to dad jumping out of planes on the other side of the world. And now imagine that there are women in the military who are also single mothers. It's not the most difficult, but in terms of developing a human, having a loving adult around is very important.

I went to a rescue place to adopt an older dog, and it would have been free, but then I saw a young dog peeing in his bed, so I decided he needed rescuing, and I had to pay $300. because technically, he was still a puppy at eleven and a half months old. I still tried adopting an older dog, but she wouldn't allow the young dog near her, so the rescue shelter wouldn't let me adopt both. Later, a woman was moving to Australia and needed to find a forever home for her older mixed Newfoundland dog, so I did get an older dog too.

I agree about Oprah... especially her interviewing skills and the fact she released Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz on the world should never be forgiven.
It depends on where you go for a dog. Some shelters will give them away(as they were just going to put them down anyway if nobody wanted them) and some make you jump through hoops like you're adopting a child. Any breeder that is any good will also at least have some questions and probably want to see where you live.
I prefer freebie dogs from in front of Wal-Mart/off Craig's list/etc, a good mutt is almost always the best dog anyway.

I do think the problem many people have with small dogs is that they are often very poorly trained, or not trained at all, because they are small and its easy to control them on a leash. But sometimes the lack of discipline makes them forget respect and they ignore the fact that literally anything catsized or bigger could murder them. Our dog once reacted to a small one being overly agressive and just jumped on him like it was a toy. The small one had to go to the doctor with a broken leg and some injurys and I consider that a lucky outcome... Couldve easily died from a slightly better aimed or with intent to kill executed bite.

    Diane,
To answer your question about the ease/difficulty of adopting dogs here in the US, I think it largely depends on the organization you're adopting from. For instance, when my family adopted a Jack Russell Terrier from the local shelter about 20 years ago, all we had to do was express interest in him and for my mother to pay a $67 adoption fee.
When we adopted our current dog (a dachshund-beagle mix who's on my channel) from a local rescue organization, however, it was a little more intensive. Not only did we have to fill out an online application and use family/friends as character references, we all had to show up to the facility on a specific day and have them explain to us what we could and couldn't do for the first two weeks she was home. She's been home with us ever since, though, and has us firmly wrapped around her paws.

She wasn't spayed so I had to wait a week until the shelter did it, but I think the county pound gives a voucher to have your vet do it.

@@C.Church There will always be a point when making fun of a demographic reaches its diminishing returns. You have to be honest with yourself on this one. Some groups offer more material than others. You can be very creative but some "materials" can get too used up. Don't put it on Bill if you think he is not "spending" so much time on a certajn demographic. For instance, there are funny white males but as a group, there is not much diversity they can offer. It always goes back to the usual "they are the most racist". And you can only beat that horse enough to have the fun taken out. Other groups offer much more. And for some, it is simply just them being the kind of people they are. And with Bill, if you look closer, it is actually more about people being the kind of people they are and not so much their group affiliation. The lines are often more blurred. That is why it is fun: are you really offended or laughing because you come from a certain background or are you just that kind of person?
