- I had a request to react to an episode of Scrubs, so here it is! This is a show that I've always wanted to sit down and watch and just had never gotten around to it, so thanks for the suggestion!! I always find it fun to watch and analyze medical shows now that I know more about the world of medicine, so I hope you guys enjoy hearing a doctor's take.

While Scrubs is not the most accurate show in regards to the medical stuff shown, in my opinion it is the most realistic show when it comes to portrait the human factor when working in a hospital. They do a phenomenal job of showing all the emotion, thoughts and feelings to different situations that the staff there has, and how to deal with it.
A few of my favorite episodes are "My old lady", "My five stages", "My way home" and "My Screwup".

Scrubs was actually named THE most accurate TV show in regards to the medical stuff.

@@mariuspuiu9555 Nearly every episode had "My" in the title since the show was narrated by JD! The episodes where it was focused on someone else started with "His" or "Their," which is a fun touch :)
Besides Scrubs actually being regaurded by a lot of doctor reactors as being REALLY accurate. I think it even just FEELS more accurate cause it doesnt go for shock value. Like, I LOVE House, but its all about "WHAT IS THIS CRAZY DISEASE!!?!?!". Where as Scrubs kind of just tries to capture the actual emotion of what its like through being an intern, to a doctor. Im none of the above, a patient, if anything(epilepsy other reasons). But still, i think the push of real feelings and lack of "trying to create shock value", gives it, its credibility. Regular people AS WELL AS medicinally inclined people can relate, because it hits both sides. Its a truly incredible show.
One of the reasons for Scrubs being more realistic than other shows, is that it is partially biographical. The Showrunner has a friend, who is the inspiration for JD, and who consults the writers, while pitching from his own experiences. Obviously a lot of it is streamlined, dramatised or simplified for TV, though.
id also say that its more realistic because the episodes are often more focused on jd or one of the main cast instead of whatever disease the patient has which leads to them not having what you could call house syndrome where its some insane rare disease to keep interest
@@KingKyuu Most medical shows are about zebras. Scrubs was about horses.
Bill Lawrence, the show creator, and John Dorian, M.D. ("the REAL JD") went to college together, as I recall. Apparently, the real JD was almost as nutty as the fake JD.
@@KingKyuu This, scrubs isn't about the medicine. We typically only get very general information about the medical cases: what type of issue is it, what treatment they're being given, and how they're responding to it. It's hard to get that stuff wrong when they don't need to bother getting into diagnostic details 99% of the time. The show isn't about doctors, it's a show about people who happen to be doctors.
What's ironic about the Tylenol scene is that this show predates the whole "Tylenol causes liver damage" thing.
That's true. It was established after a study in 2006.
They taught me that in health class in 2002...
@@ashwilliams6844 Really? It was known that Vicodin could cause liver damage prior to 2006. But the previous poster is correct, it was established in 2006 that it was the Acetaminophen in Vicodin that caused the damage, and not the Hydrocodone as had been assumed up to that point.
@@charlesajones77 I guesstimated at the year. I graduated highschool in 2004 and took health within the first two years, so it was either 2001 or 2002. But our health teacher highly cautioned against abuse of tylenol/acetominophin because it was metabolized in (and could 'crystalize' in. Not sure that bit's medically accurate) the liver, and could cause liver damage if proper dosage wasn't followed.

The way your draw dropped when Elliot betrayed JD during rounds 😂😂😂
I eventually got okay with Elliot... and then she did something just as bad.
But I eventually got okay with Elliot again... and then she did something even worse.
After what happened with Keith, I never trusted or liked the character again. That was the likable good person exit for the character. I felt the ending was a forced "hollywood ending" that would end badly.
One thing I noticed in all these react videos is that the doctor compares Sacred Heart to where they work. It's not supposed to be a good hospital, they're super cheap and Dr Kelso, at least at the beginning, is only looking at it from a financial perspective. It's not supposed to be an average hospital necessarily.

Its a caricature of any given mid level hospital. And frankly its perfect, especially for the time period. Lol.
I would LOVE to see more Scrubs reactions, because the show is amazing, extremely funny, and extremely heartbreaking at times, and seeing ACTUAL doctors react to it is always so much fun, so... if you do more I would love it.
House MD is also a good one for doctors to comment on - especially 1x21 three stories. But in general, it is always fun to see if doctors can get the diagnosis before House does. Don't think it ever happens though, because all the cases are so damn obscure and rare that it basically never happens, lmao. It's a fun challenge though!

Hey, you are great! Would love to see more Scrubs, the more the merrier honestly so it would even be cool if you worked through them chronologically. Some of them are definitely less expertise-oriented than others but they all would make for interesting reactions/input from you.
Something fun about the show is that although they play to the medical/surgical stereotypes there are definitely quite a few episodes where they subvert them, like Turk having a really touchy-feely and emotional attending that made him really uncomfortable because he's more accustomed to the machismo of the other surgeons. Such a great show, hope to see you do more!
I know that this video is years old. However, it's new to me. I am not in the medical profession, but something you said at the end of this reaction opened my eyes to an issue that I have been dealing with. You were commenting on how you have to learn how to put the hospital out of your mind when you go home or you'll never make it.
I have been experiencing anxiety at night, and it is usually around work related issues, many of which are 'what ifs'. Part of the problem is that I work out of the house, so my home is in my house. I now realize that I have never learned how to separate my work life from my home life because the two are so conflated. This really helps me because I now have a very real possible answer for at least a part of my night anxiety. By the way, my anxiety is almost always at night.

13:50 it's been months since I've seen the first episode, but I do remember that the nurse already checked all those things.
On the "mistake" thing, that's more recent. The general prevailing idea at the time when Scrubs started to air was that admitting to a mistake could *cause* a lawsuit. Interestingly, lawyers discovered that the opposite was actually true: That if you admitted fault immediately, explained what happened, and what steps were going to be taken to be certain it wouldn't happen again, lawsuits became far LESS likely.
I think the reason scrubs is more realistic is because they focus more on the comedy and character interaction, which allows the show to have more of the mundane aspects of hospital life instead of the dramatic.

@@DoctorCrystalMD I forget which interview it was but the creator Bill Lawerence said that he created the show to be one that focuses less on the medical cases like most shows and more on the experience of being a dr. A big reason it is often called the most accurate medical show on tv is not because it gets all the medical terminology and procedures right though it does better than most, but because it comes the closest to giving an accurate portrayal of what its like to be a doctor both at work and outside of work. Shows of the Grey's variety to keep ppl interested have to create ridiculous cases and drama to keep an audience because the medicine and not the people is the focus of the show hence why the cast can change so much and the show still does well. Where as Scrubs is character focused. Also interesting note JD is actually based on Bill's friend, whose name actually was JD and helped create/consult the show, experiences as a dr.
I never get tired of doctor reactions to Scrubs.

I instinctively bristled when you declared that Dr. Cox was "a jerk", but then collected myself and remembered that of course he's a jerk, that's why all Scrubs fan love him :)
She needs to keep in mind that Scrubs aired when she was in the kindergarten or something. A lot of things were different 25 years ago.

You don't turn patients away based on whether or not they have insurance, except that it happens. I covered healthcare for many years as a reporter and one of the biggest hassles was covering how certain hospital systems routinely indulge in patient dumping.
BTW, I had countless medical personnel - doctors, nurses, technicians, bureaucrats, etc. - tell me Scrubs was one of the most realistic medical shows ever.
Can you do code black episode 11 and the start of 12 (the cliffhanger is resolved in the beginning of the first episode)

I once had a kidney stone removed and some how the surgeon poked a hole in my lung. I kept telling the nurse that my chest hurt and they kept saying "oh that's impossible" it wasn't until my mum, who is a nurse called the doctor and they did a scan that they realised what had happened. They did admit the mistake to me though lol

Have you ever reacted to house md? Its not realistic buts its interesting because it deals with people with rare medical conditions. Also, Dr. House breaks every rule he can possibly think of.

9:18 I knew it!!! It was mean. I think many inaccuracies are for time and an actor getting screen time from what I'm hearing/seeing, that correct? "I have faith in JD" best part. Happily would watch more. If I picked another show it would be Bones. Based on books from a real forensic anthropologist. She actually did a lot to make sure the series had more scientific accuracy than most crime shows. Plus it's a very touching show with wonderful relationships.
As someone who has spent more time than most in and out of hospitals, doctors, at least the ones I've had dealings with, always defer to nurses for procedures like IV insertions, catheters, and any other procedure that doctors simply wouldn't be required to do multiple times per day. An M.D. degree doesn't always mean that the person is skilled in what, from a patient's perspective, seems like a basic procedure.

Thank you! I have a question though. Because you mentioned the ED during reacting to the show. Why are there so many names for it? ED, ER, A&E, EW and CD (Though I hardly hear of Emergency Ward and Casualty Department) and maybe more I do not know of? Oh and Urgent Care maybe? Is UC also an abbreviation? Why so many different names? Or are there differences between all of them? This has been on my mind every now and then for a long time. I do not know why I have not asked this before. But I have questioned this myself for a long time. I hope you can clear this up for me. Over here in the Netherlands we just have one name for it. Spoedeisende hulp. Which literally translates to urgent help. But I guess the most fitted translation would be Urgent Care.
They all mean the same thing! Initially was emergency room bc it was just a room and it kind of stuck...now these days it’s a whole department so in the hospital pretty much everyone says ED, at least in my experience. Urgent care is mostly for smaller things... too many people use them for colds and stuff, but they really should get a PCP!!!

Speaking as someone who has done medical billing for 10+ years, I believe certain hospital facilities and departments are defined by each state or jurisdiction, based on what kinds of procedures can be performed there, which procedures can be billed from there, how patients are treated, and how insurance companies reimburse: there's inpatient hospital, outpatient office, observation and short stay, ambulatory surgery center, skilled nursing facility, etc. The kind of department also decides which laws apply; for instance, anything defined and licensed as an "emergency room" (performing at least 33% of its visits as emergency care over the previous calendar year) must comply with the Emergency Medical
Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) and various other state and federal regulations. What counts is what the room or department is licensed as; whether it's called "emergency room" or "emergency department" is probably a matter of style, choice, and size.
A seventeen-year-old boy just died after being turned away from a hospital for lack of insurance even though he had the coronavirus. Things like that happen every day.
I have genetic hyperlipidemia and I can’t remember how many times I’ve been hospitalized. Luckily I live right next to one of the best hospitals in the USA. It’s also a teaching hospital.
About not telling the patients about mistakes: Ithink the thrust is not to admit fault in front of the patient, not to ignore the problem and hope it's fine. I've heard this both ways but in favour of this (and remember it's coming from an incompetent lawyer not a healthcare professional) it's very restricting and bad for you legally to outright admit that you fucked up and any and all problems they suffer because of it are your fault. Again, not saying this is actual policy inreal life places but also again ted is not a very good lawyer.

If you react to them or not is up to you but, this is my favorite T.V. series. I recommend watching it even if just for your entertainment. I binge watch the series twice a year. Although don’t watch the reboot when they tried to bring the series back after it got canceled. The reboot was worse than awful.
If you do react to every episode though I will definitely watch every one of them. Gives me something to do when I am on break.
To this day, I'm at least 90% certain that nurses and doctors are the only reason that beepers are still a thing

"Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald" is a pod where Zach Braff and Donald Faison commentate over every episode of Scrubs. They started it in the darkest days of the pan-dam-o-ram-ma and it gave listeners a needed break from everything and allowed them to remember the funny/more innocent days of Scrubs.
The two bring on many of their fellow castmates for interesting conversations and reminiscing about life at Sacred Heart.
I look forward to watching you watch our favorite medial show that features songs like "Guy Love", and amazing episodes like "My Screw Up".

The Good Doctor if you havent seen it or reacted to it already, it's also pretty realistic but more dramatized then Scrubs.
Dr. Crystal M.D. N.C.😁. Absolutely no comment. Never saw this show. In fact haven't watched tv for over 15yrs. Too mind numbing. So I will have to take your word on your observations on this one. However if you would like a slightly different view on things and how training is squashed down. Then I would look up Special Operations Medic and see how their training is conducted. I think you would find it interesting. I did and the things they need to know. I often had heard when I was in that they were the best unlicensed doctors in the world. Take a look when you get some time. Until next week.👍

I am so confused right now. Logistics of medications is incredible. I mean like knowing drug interactions and side effects and allergies... im sure theres even more to consider...
P.s. im not a doctor, nor am i a lpn. But i do administer meds for my job and i wonder ALOT of the time if certain things are being done correctly...
It was something I was really worried about when I started, but the mind really is amazing and when you do it enough, you just remember it! The EMRs help a lot nowadays bc it will alert you of interactions or allergies
Ngl over here in the UK shifts tend to go 8am - 8pm not 6am so tho i know Scrubs seems to be American it isn't the case around the world that all medical shifts start at 6am
My sister, who's a radiologist now, has said that Scrubs was the most accurate medical show on TV. And I've had an ICU doctor tell me the same thing. Least realistic? House MD.
Also, when she graduated from UVa Medical School, she was a member of the first class where the females outnumbered the males.

I think sacred heart was always supposed to be an extremely exasperated version of a terrible hospital on the administration's side.

Think you're taking it a bit too seriously, idk maybe that's what your channel was requesting. But as a fellow doc, I agree with everything you're saying, just don't think every little thing in a sitcom needs to be analyzed so critically lol

My gastroenterologist caused me to get an anal fissure by giving me a colonoscopy and he has lied about it for years. This condition has ruined my life. I have never in my life seen a doctor admit they made a mistake.

Yeah, that's a common trope, especially in medical and police shows. Where in real life a patient (or a piece of evidence) is sent to a specialist, whose entire job is to be very good at this one specific part, TV shows and movies always have the main characters do everything themselves. This is for several reasons: it costs more money to cast dozens of different actors for all the various specialists, it's a scheduling nightmare to have loads of recurring characters that only appear every third or fifth episode, it makes the script more complex and harder to follow for the casual viewer - and, frankly, the audience is there to watch the famous main actors, whose characters they're emotionally attached to.
That's why you get doctors doing every examination and treatment themselves, CSI guys making arrests or interviewing suspects, and detectives doing their own tests on evidence.

Scrubs was a great show, but if I had to point out a flaw, is that somewhere between season 5 and 6 it became less and less about medicine and mostly about the personal lives of the characters, so the show kinda lost its balance.
The finale was amazing though
