Praise kept interrupting Rick right before he was able to make a point and that was very unhelpful for the discussion and frustrating to listen to. Because Greek mythology says "hell" is a place of torment, people believe that the scriptures teach that the wicked are currently being punished by God. They do not. The word "hell" in scripture means "grave". It will be however be transformed into a lake of fire in the end by God, who will destroy the wicked with the earth. At this time, hell is just the grave and there is no torment happening there yet, since all who have died are sleeping there, waiting for the day of resurrection and judgement. King David likely wrote these verses, acknowledging that he, like all humans, descend into hell upon physical death. All will be raised from it at the end of days. The saved will be placed into God's kingdom (a new earth) and the wicked will be destroyed with this current earth. But wasn't David a favored servant of God? Would God torment the saved? Certainly not. Hell is just the interior of the earth where our souls sleep until the day of resurrection. Psalms 16[10] For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Psalms 139[8] If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. Luke quotes the Psalms regarding what David said, and tells us that like Christ who went onto hell (the grave, Psalms 16:10/Acts 2:27) and was raised from it, we saved will follow his footsteps and likewise be raised from hell. Acts 2 [23] Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: [24] Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. [25] For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: [26] Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: [27] Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. [28] Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. [29] Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. [30] Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; [31] He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. [32] This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. [33] Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. [34] For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Notice these verses also state David has not ascended into heaven, because none have, nor will. We go to a new earth after resurrection: John 3[13] And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. This is because scripture teaches that when a person dies, they sleep in the grave until the last day, which is when Christ told us he would raise us from the grave (hell) on the last day: John 6[39] And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.[40] And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.[44] No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.[54] Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. God has stated that the elements of matter of the entire universe universe will be destroyed. The scripture uses plural "heavens" which includes the 1st heaven (atmosphere of earth) and universe (2nd heaven). Not only that, but "the earth also" will be destroyed: 2Peter 3[10] But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. God will create a new atmosphere and a new earth for mankind, a perfect one, and Christ will dwell upon it with us for eternity. 2 Peter tells us that God has made this promise in the past, not during New Testament times: 2Peter 3[13] Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. When did God make this promise? Here, in about 700 B.C.: Isaiah 65[17] For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. Isaiah 66[22] For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. . . . and centuries later he repeated this promise: Zephaniah 3[8] Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. In Mark and Matthew God tells us that the new earth will not pass away like the present one will: Mark13[31] Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. Luke21[33] Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. Matthew 24[35] Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Revelation 21[1] And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. Therefore, since God does not lie and has told us he will destroy the universe and earth and create a new one, those who say otherwise are in denial of God's Word.
