I don't know about u guys but if heaven n hell is real, I want to go where Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Matt Dillihunty, Sam Harris, Lawrence Krauss, Aronra, Dan Dennett, and Phil Mason go. I definitely don't want to spend eternity with people like Ray Comfort, Kent and Eric Hovind.

RS, the "concept of eternal torture" IS in the bible, thanks to Jesus, who promised it to those who failed to believe his message. He said this: "I tell you the truth, just as you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for me." Scripture continues: "And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
      Source: Matthew 25:41-46.

How did I "cherry pick"? You made a single unqualified claim that the bible never mentions eternal torture. I showed you something that you were unaware of; namely that at least one time the bible mentions the concept. I said nothing else outside of that narrow question, except to point out in this post that you were perhaps ignorant about this part of the gospels.

When I see hypocrisy, I point it out. Do you kill rebellious children when they curse you (Lev 20:9, Lev 21:18-21)? This is a law that Jesus supported, according to Mark 7:9-10. What about 1 Timothy 2:12, that says that no women may have any authority whatsoever? And of course, let's not forget 1 Peter 2:18, which tells slaves to submit to their masters, even cruel ones. This stuff isn't just in the Old Testament, there's archaic bullshit in the New Testament as well. As for eternal torture, it's all over the Bible. Matthew 25:46 is just one example, and there are several "weeping and gnashing of teeth" passages all over the New Testament. Just go look for yourself.
Atheists don't cherrypick from the Bible. We equally disbelieve all of it, and don't accept the claim that any of it is the word of God. When we single out passages like this, it's to point out how Christians often ignore them and act as if the Bible doesn't command them to kill their disobedient children and submit to injustice. You won't see atheists railing against "love thy neighbor," because that part of the Bible isn't harmful. You see us calling out the archaic, barbaric bullshit splattered throughout the book that many Christians seem to turn a blind eye towards, as if they weren't supposed to regard it as the infallible word of God.

      1. I did not "twist a bible verse" that I "think is negative." I quoted the EXACT words from the NET bible, and never commented on whether I think it's "negative." Why do you dispute the words?
      2. I did not "leave out a few words," either. The words are verbatim from the NET bible.
      3. I admit that I said you were ignorant of the text, and perhaps I was wrong about that. My only other plausible guess to account for your claim is that you are lying--perhaps to yourself-- about the text, but I chose to give you the benefit of the doubt. I still suspect, however, that you made an honest mistake. After all, you have a record of distorting what I've said--event though my words are here on this board in black and white!
      4. Now that we have established that my narrowly-focused comment did not "cherry-pick," may I ask you what my "agenda" is? I only know that I seek truth and to correct error. If you have actual evidence for what you have accused me of, I sincerely ask you to share it. And if you have evidence that the part of the bible I quoted is not part of Christian scripture, I again sincerely ask you to show that evidence. And if you do, I promise that will admit my error.

@@chris-nj3vg Very consistently: just one of many examples of the inconsistency around what hell is: Matthew 8:10-12
10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
So, you believe that the bible consistently doesn't teach what it says here. Next you'll be telling us it consistently doesn't say that Jesus was born before and after 1AD and that it doesn't say Jesus died both before and after easter.

It is the brainwashing of adults to believe in ideas like life emerging on our planet from an assumed act of Abiogenesis that gets me-especially when science has never to date even once observed a single act of Abiogenesis. Without such an observation, I am left to wonder what factual basis an Atheist can employ to explain why life exists on this planet. On the other hand, science does observe billions upon billions upon billions of acts of Biogenesis (life gives rise to life) occuring on our planet. Every day we observe more examples of Biogenesis across numerous species. Of course, that is exactly the sort of thing we would expect to see if a living God gave rise to life on our planet: the kind of act of Biogenesis explained in the Bible. But, what are billions of supporting examples of that idea when Atheists have 0 acts of observed Abiogenesis to hang their hat on to compare against?

: Yep, the many meanings of hell that have been perverted: (Your's) Hel - the goddess of the Nordic underworld of the dead, who put the dead in a large pot. (The original English) hell - Just a cave or a hole in the ground. Later perverted into the Sheol of the mostly Old Test. bible (Hebrew place of the dead, or just grave). Early English used to talk of putting their potatoes in HELL! This simply meant storing them underground in a root cellar. So, yeah... it's pretty easy to see where this all comes from, if you do your homework outside of the K.J. bible itself. The K.J. writers just went through and edited the English HELL wherever they saw, Sheol, Hades (in the Greek N.T.), or Tartarus (also N.T. Greek).

That's hilarious, your standard for judging morality is God himself. Your morality comes from God. I think if you stood before your maker you would see how ridiculous your attempts to judge him are. That said -
Judgment, if God wants to judge you and others for horrific crimes then he is entitled. He's the boss not you, your morality against his pales into insignicance. You just think your sins are no big deal because you judge yourself against the wrong standard.
God aint gonna appear to you and argue his case. In his infinite wisdom he uses other ways to reveal himself to humans, many ways, but not the ways you might want. Tough, God is the boss not you. He has given you more than enough to reveal himself to you. If you prefer wilful blindness and suppression of the truth, dulling yourself to that voice on the inside and the many other ways God speaks, well that's on you.
"The fool says in his heart there is no God." Atheists only exist this side of the grave. If they stay that way they wake up in a nightmare that never ends. They dont have to, but they dont want to follow the way of the master of the universe, so deserve what comes next (which is in any case not what God, or any apologist, wants for them). I am an atheist who was (partially-)raised as a Christian - we bounced around to different churches, including Presbyterian, Methodist, and two different Baptist churches - and I have an interesting anecdote to share:
The final church that I attended was a Baptist church, and I went there from the ages of 11-13. I already *knew* at this point that "God" was nothing more than "Santa Claus for adults", but I just *wanted* so badly to believe - because the church functions for kids were a lot of fun lol...
However, nomatter how hard I tried, I could not force myself to believe something for which there was no evidence - nomatter how badly I wanted to.
So I actually took my concerns to my "Sunday-School" "teacher" - I came to him, this little 12-year-old child, and told him that I simply could not believe in God, that I simply could not possibly believe in anything for which there was no scientific evidence (I was basically begging him to just *show* me ANY evidence...) - and do you want to know what he told me?
He literally *said the words* "Fake it 'til you make it"...!
...And, sadly enough, I did keep trying to force myself to believe in that shit for another year before I finally realized that I was simply too intelligent to force myself to believe/support something that is false.

exactly! punishment for eternity for ANY crime is absurd. I mean even prison is very harsh. 5 years let alone eternity being tortured would drive anyone batshit crazy. even a week would do it. and to think some people can choose to receive a get out of jail free card by saying sorry and accepting god, circumventing punishment for your sin. does that not render anything we do pointless if I could rape murder steal and just press the reset button? while you can live a life of a saint and still arrive at the same location. its just so convenient. besides hell could ever only be mental torture we need bodies to feel physical pain we need nerves and a brain to process it. theres also people who get off and cant even feel physical pain. it's just ridiculous to think people can believe this shit.

[1]And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Zion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.
[2]And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:
[3]And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.
[4]These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
[5]And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.
[6]And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
[7]Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
[8]And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
[9]And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
[10]The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
[11]And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
[12]Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
[13]And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
[14]And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
[15]And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
[16]And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.
[17]And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
[18]And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
[19]And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
[20]And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

@13Gladius 2 Galileo wasn't condemned as a person. His view of the sun as the center of the universe (as we know now there are actually many suns) was rejected by the Holy Office. This wasn't considered as infallible (at least by most) rejection of heliocentrism, since it wasn't Ex Cathedra statement by the Pope and it wasn't an anathema in Ecumenical Council.

Assuming you were asking why, because according to most Christian theologies, we are born in sin, spend our lives sinning, and only by leading perfectly good lives AND believing wholeheartedly in Jesus can we get into heaven when we die. Considering all of the different things that are supposed to be sinful, and that we supposedly start off with a negative balance, since babies are presumed evil, very few, if any people would make it up there.

All for your sin and mine and the worlds . Jesus willingly left heaven and came and endured all of that on the cross . I would say it was a little more than a weekend . And even though I don't think I will be rewarded or punished after life, I've still been a good person. I believe we all have a limited glimpse of life, in some form, and I hope everyone has the best experience they can have. Animals similar and different to me, I just want our lives to be as devoid of unneccecary suffering as it can be. I see myself and my own situation in them all. It could have been me. And I find that kind of morality the most compassionate, open, grounded and fair one we can have. If any god would rather I discriminate and cause suffering to others, as long as I worship him, that is a disgustingly narcissistic morality.

Religion is happy clappy time spent with your family and friends singing and feeling 'good'.
Most religious people arent really religious. They dont follow the bible, they follow what they want to think of as the bible, sanitised and full of flowers and all that good shit.
They think you are trying to take away their community, their happiness. I believe its that, not so much the hell and brimstone that they are defending. Blindly.
Dont make me look at what it actually says, I dont want to understand it, I like sunday singing and my kids go to a nice kids group.
The big bad corporations in charge are the ones doing most of the damnation thing. As an underlying threat to not even think about alternatives. Cos religion is HUGE business. If I didnt make myself clear, religion is worse than waterboarding. Its torture of the mind thats 24/7. Even /thinking/ of an alternative will get you burned forever. Thats why I have mixed feelings about religious people. Yes its obvious that its all nonsense /if you allow yourself to think about it/. These poor victims have been indoctrinated from birth to not even go there, that part of their minds has great big STAY AWAY signs all over it. And you arent released from that until you disbelieve. Its a catch 22. Which is the only reason churches can still exist in this modern age. As in North Korea, mind control is the best tool ever. Convince them that their thoughts are being watched, and what the hell do you need an army for? There is no longer any freedom ANYWHERE. Not even if you were the last person on the planet....

I never got this concept of Heaven and Hell. And it is clear that the religious haven't even thought what an 'eternity' actually implies. It reminds me of a rollercoaster ride, sure they are fun, but are they still fun after an hour on one, how about a week or a year? Right, at some point you are going to want to get off that rollercoaster. Just like at some point, after you have done everything a billion times, over and over again you would want to 'get off' the Heaven ride. Literally, in the end, Heaven would become a Hell for everyone.

See that tree over there? Yeah, the one I put nice and close to the clearing where you will "sleep" (explains what sleep is. Takes about 5 minutes cuz Adam has zero knowledge).
Okay, now I am...well the guy who was here when you woke up for the first time. I created you (then has to explain what created means.)
The only things you can know are what I installed in your OS...and what I tell you. So that tree over there. No, Adam. Focus. Yes, that's a platypus. Yes, it doesn't look anything like the elephant, does it? Okay now where was I?
Oh yeah. You don't know right from wrong. You won't ever know right from wrong...unless you eat one of the red things on that tree over there. But don't do that, cuz that would be wrong.
No, I can't explain wrong to you. That would kinda spoil the elaborate setup that is My Perfect Plan and therefore cannot fail...

That is a silly statement .... why do you think God should override every persons free will and make it perfect for all, all the time. What that would entail is a planet of robots. God ain’t gonna do it. God will fix every injustice in his own time. In Jesus he became human and stepped into suffering ... he shared in human pain ... he didn’t distance himself from it. God is not at anyone’s beck and call to give them a five star existence. The bible says to expect hard times in life .... God promised no one a bother free life on this planet. But his retirement plan is awesome. Reject it if you want .... your choice

The belief of someone being eternally subjected to hell fire originally comes from genuine hatred and pure desire of vengeance. Why would an omnibenevolent god force someone to eternal suffering when he can kill your supposed soul and make it vanish, just like it didn't exist before you were born? Death is actually a benevolent thing, eternal punishment? That's absurdly immoral. Punishment only serves to bring awareness and correctness. It has no moral purpose if you live forever in punishment.

    • @lef6419
      @lef6419 8 років тому

The issues you bring up a very poignant and relevant. The first issue I have to say is that no one can really understand the mind of God! The second issue is and about the kinds of religion around the world, the real issue is having selected the right one because in the end among all the religions there is only one!Listening to the conditions that constitutes hell is most certainly frightening indeed and as a believer it frightens me but perhaps that is partially the reason for the existence of Hell it gives humans a reason for staying on the straight and narrow. Usually slapping humans on the risk doesn't account for much.It is easy to say that God is not a good God because he has condemned man to eternal (horrible) punishment however we as human beings have no idea what the value of sin is or the value of a human life.We are quick to ignore the evil that man does from our days of the Egyptians and to present day man's inhumanity towards man (horrible) Has Been Frightening! Egyptian rulers forcing people into slavery from birth to death, people viciously attacking, mutilating, raping in pretty much any other horror one can think of man no doubt has been involved in such.If one is to believe God alone has given man life and man turns around and says guess what I don't believe in you so stuff that in your pipe and smoke it!So it strikes me that God is going to get to a point where he says look is only going to be two addresses Heaven or Hell you decide!

    • @ricardocosta5628
      @ricardocosta5628 8 років тому +2

Le F The issue is very simple and there's no need for circular reasoning at all. If you claim that god is omni-benevolent and made us in his image, we understand enough about morals to understand god's morality, so when you claim that god has created a special place of eternal suffering without any possible way of redemption (or that god sends non-believers to hell simply because they couldn't find enough evidence to be convinced of such, since you have no choice in your beliefs, you either are convinced or not by your own reasoning which you have no direct control of), and if we as limited beings made in god's image, see that as immoral, because there's no moral purpose in eternal punishment, then there's undeniably either a lie in the claim that god is moral, or in the claim that we get our morals from god, OR in both claims and that it's much more reasonable to believe that any theistic god so far was invented by mankind to control their societies by instilling the fear of eternal punishment in people's minds.
There's no getting around on it. You can try to justify god's morality by asserting the he got angry at us as a wrathful dad that is making an ultimatum to his mischievous children or asserting that we don't understand the value of sin to god and that therefore somehow he's morally justified to make us suffer forever.
None of these assertions justify god's immoral actions. Do you understand that?

    • @lef6419
      @lef6419 8 років тому

To Me like You're Making the Same Argument That so Many People Claim That They Need Proof of God's Existence, First of All I Don't Believe That Fallacy (Needing to Know God Exists) Because We Have Enough Evidence to Show That Even in the Face of Truth and Reality People Can Still Not Believe. Biblical History Indicates Very Few People at the Time Believed That Jesus Could Be the Son of God and Based on Their Ignorance They Killed Him for It!
You Complain about God but You Never Complain about the Lust That Man Has Had on This Earth for so Long, You Don't Complain about the Innocent People Who Have Suffered and Died at the Hands of Man, You Don't Complain about the Lying That Goes on Generation after Generation, You Don't Complain about How Sons and Daughters Disrespect Their Parents, You Don't Complain about Parents Disrespecting Their Sons and Daughters, Etc. and Based on How People like You Think Than Those Who Have Suffered at the Hands of Men Should Simply Be Satisfied Because God Says Hey I'm Not Going to Punish Them Because I'm a Loving God and You Just Have To Suck It up!

When God comes into my life first then i will beleive him.. but im done getting on my knees and fasting and forgiving people who do me wrong ,for nothing in return.

Theists will argue that if there is no afterlife than what is the point of living a happy life, which is about the dumbest reasoning I have ever heard. Why would someone with one chance at life not want to make the best of it.
For those theists who believe in an afterlife, they can be the biggest dicks in the world but as long as they repent before death all is forgiven and they go to heaven. Seems like a get out of jail free card to me.

I think theist would argue that without an afterlife/God life at an intellectual level becomes meaningless, not necessarily at an emotional level.
Given that there is only one chance at life the most logical way to live is that of selfishness and pleasurability, not doing things for other people that will ultimately end up having no purpose or meaning.

In Genesis 3:19 God states the fate of man rather definitively. Additionally, in Deuteronomy 4:2 God directed that man is not to change, add to or detract from his word. Yet, the New Testament, in its entirety, stands in violation of Deut. 4:2. Additionally, throughout the Old Testament, we have God dealing personally with the Jews. The latter could never do anything right for extended periods. In response, God urged, coerced, threatened and punished them over and over and over again. Yet, He never told them or threatened them with hell and eternal damnation or promised them eternal heaven. Never. It is in the New Testament that we get this entire refutation and overhaul of Genesis 3:19. In so many ways, the New Testament calls God a bumbling and deceitful liar, who was, in effect, rebelled against, overcame and replaced by Jesus. Did God retire with a fat IRA and 401K? If the truth matters, then let it be told.

With threats of punishment there is an inverse proportionality between the severity of the punishment and the likelihood of it happening.
In orther words, the _less likely_ a punishment is, the more severe it needs to be, and vice versa. So, since Hell is the most severe punishment imaginable, it's also the least likely to even exist.

I can't really seem to get a good answer. It's all over the place. And what made alot of people ditch the faith. Some things I agree with like when bad things happen, "oh god will punish them don't worry." WHAT?! Thanks for the response, hopefully good help.

TK Cyberglyph There is no afterlife, the fear of death is part of what fueled our belief in a higher power. Nobody wants to accept that our time on Earth is limited, but I think that stops people from living a fulfilling life. Without the complete understanding that your existence is finite and linked only to your ability to keep physiologically functioning, then some may not truly make as big of an impact. The facade of some sort of amazing "afterlife" let's people accept terrible hardships throughout life, blindly putting their faith into a creator that in any religion has no concrete evidence and is usually immoral or contradicting. Worry about living your life now, and accept that you make all the decision for you. No magic man is dictating your fate based on how moral you are, but morality is still important. There doesn't need to be religion for morality. I was a Christian before stepping back and objectively looking at religion. Once you do it seems crazy that soo many believe these thousands of different stories all contradicting one another.

While the idea that there is no afterlife does seem to be the most common atheist view technically as atheism is just the lack of being religious you could have any or no answer to those kinds of questions and still count. Keep in mind though that that often having no answer can be far more honest than saying you do

Child Boo Bong Manding said Matt helped him find "reality" when Matt confuses what is not real with what is real. Saying "Jim does not believe there is a god" says what is not real about Jim and doesn't make Jim anything... the proof is it is true if Jim is not anything. Matt says that it makes Jim an atheist. Matt's grasp of atheism itself confuses what reality is not with what reality is. And this is the man that taught Bong about reality?
      Holy fuck.

*Saying "Jim does not believe there is a god" says what is not real about Jim and doesn't make Jim anything*
What the fuck does this even mean? You seem to be one of those types of persons that either pretends to be or seriously believes that he is really deep and shit, but really isn't. Matt's "grasp of atheism" is, and to my knowledge, has always been the lack of belief in the existence of God or gods. That's what atheism is. If Matt helped Bong Manding with finding a reality that doesn't include gods that works for him, then good for Matt and Bong.

    • @gklr

Child Boo It means it says nothing about X to say X does not do or does not have something. Saying X lacks Y, doesn't refer to X at all and obviously Dillahunty thinks it does.
A lack of belief is not anything, so it is not atheism... and it doesn't refer to the atheist to say the atheist lacks something.

Thank you again do much !!!!! I wad raised Buddhist / Taoist. They also mention a lot about a kind of hell and limbo, lots of evil spirits, demons etc etc etc. It was super scary growing up in both temples, some of the statues used to scare me as a kid. Eventually, by age 6 though, I started to become infatuated with how beautiful the artwork and statues became to my little self. When I started to study on my own at public libraries. I started to figure out for myself that it's all the creative work of the human mind. I've never experienced any supernatural events, but all too many people around me told me a lot of their experiences. So I felt extremely isolated, left out and thus extremely curious. True before I developed critical thinking etc as Matt mentioned.
It's an extremely lonely life, sometimes still lonely, because ad an artist, I lose many opportunities in many communities to perform and thrive, because most of the communities which accepts my music happen to be of spiritual backing. Spiritual non profits and communities are extremely wealthy, extremely wealthy.
I'm content to be alone in my critical thinking. So I'm so grateful for these amazing talks online. I feel confident in my art form and I don't need to be hired by spiritual communities if my views are triggering them.
I don't need so much wealth. I definitely need more critical and logical knowing ^_^

If religion would disappear today. Every one would have to start thinking for their selves. We would have to except that we are accountable for one another as well as our selves and not to some invisible nobody. All the energy that goes into lying to your selves and others to propagate a crowed to feel safe in could then be diverted to solving real world problems with real world solutions. If we attach ignorance our children would become wiser our cultures could evolve. When every one is on the same page what could we do? Could we find a utopia together without devision? Could we conqueror greed and vanity? Would woman quit hanging the toilet paper on backwards? We may some day find out if greed, vanity and the corruption they bring will end but only if we work together and realize our accountably to one another and not to an imaginary being. Keep up the good work Matt Dillahunty. The Jews don't believe in hell not for the same reasons. Neither should we. Hell is a woman trying to survive her father selling her into sex slavery?marriage. Hell is hear among us if anywhere and we are the ones who make it. We are the creator of our own delusions.

You cannot understand anything about the afterlife, or Heaven or Hell or eternity with a human mind. It all has to be accepted by faith and understand that it is far about what we can reason now. None of anything he says in this video is valid, because he is trying to reason with human logic. You cannot explain God with human logic....because He isn't human. 'We see now through a dark vale, but then (after this life) out eyes will be open and will see and understand...' the Apostle Paul.
