Yeah in 2015 when I built my budget gaming pc I chose an FX-8320 and I'm glad that I didn't listen to a friend of mine who told me to consider the Pentium G3258, the ultra overclockable dual core CPU that everyone was talking about.
Now basically every game uses at least 4+ cores, it would have been painful to still have that Pentium nowadays.

I had the same dilemma in 2015. Ryzen was still too far away and I had been considering the FX-83x0 for a long time, but felt it was too old to purchase in 2015 and in the end went for a much more expensive i5-6600K setup as soon as intel released it. But given what happened in the CPU market and how intel increased the core counts in their mainstream CPU' lately, I feel ripped off :/
The i5-6600K is a second-grade junk now, not much better than your FX.

My FX 9590 has been rock solid, even at 5GHz. Granted I am running the required water cooling in an H100i. But not a single issue. I think it's the luck of the draw with the chips. But I know quite a few people tried running these with the wrong motherboards, as they had to have a board with 220w to the cpu. I run mine with an Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z. The real reason I would consider this cpu a mistake for me is because I 'upgraded' from a Phenom II X6 Black 1100T (awesome cpu). So at the time, gains were almost imperceivable.

    • @mika4759

@@peanutdelight8413 You don't need a 990fx board.. it is ncie to have, yes, but something like ga-970a-ud3p is enough, and it's cheap and widespread
If you can't find ud3p - M5A97 R2.0 is still available today for 60 bucks and a free shipping and will do the job(one of the most widespread boards atm).. not to mention all the 990 boards on second-hand market from all the people who genuinely believe that FX sucks
You don't need a good cooler, gammaxx 400 is more than enough to stay ~ at 55 degrees at load after proper OC
Generally speaking: ~ 20 bucks cooler will do the job just fine
You don't need a beefy psu either, especially with modern GPUs
Good 550w psu will be enough most of the time, especially with a 1060 or something similar in terms of power draw
You don't want to OC FX too much, because after ~ 4.4 ghz it gains too much powerdraw and heat compared to previous settings
Depending on your silicon - you shouldn't go above 4.4ghz without proper cooling solution, and for most users it's the best range(4.2-4.4)
And without understanding how to "complex OC" this cpu - it's may not gain performance above this threshold a lot of the time, or even loose it(e.g. performing worse at 5ghz than 4.7 ghz)
Regarding your video - they are not gonna perform the same, the link you provided shows bad kind of overclock
This techtuber doesn't know what he's doing
And the whole point about FX cpu's is NOT the fps
But how smooth and stable they are, they won't lag where i5 would, they load textures where i5/i7 wouldn't and so on
They are more "honest" CPU's so to say
If you want smoothness and stability - you complex OC 83xx, if you want high fps numbers with stutters, lag and skipping loading textures - you go with some kind of locked i5/i7/xeon/whatever
But at least your max fps will be higher sometimes, if you don't know how to OC FX *shrugs*

I am still running a FX-8350. To be honest, i just built this PC in 2017 and am totally happy with it. Even my RX580 might be overkill, rarely ever see GPU usage over 50%. But it runs all the games i tested really well.
If you want to test overclocking, go for a board that lists the 9590 as supported CPU. That means, it will have at least 220W VRMs, and give you around 100W of headroom on the 8350.
Also don't even start with the CPU clock. The bandwith of those chips is mostly held back by the HyperTransport link. If you get a board with 980 or 990 chipset, oveclock the HT multiplier to at least 2400 or 2600 MHz, make sure it is set to 16bit, and push the northbridge clock as far as you can. After that, go for highest possible CPU multiplier. I can push my 8350 to 4.8GHz at 1.4V, using a 240mm AiO. 1.4V sounds like a lot, but the 8350 runs at above 1.33V at stock.
Also, the AM3 platform loves fast RAM almost as much as Ryzen, so if possible, you should try 2400MHz or faster DDR3.

@@jttech44 I would not say it is lame. He did a good job at showing the base performance. And i would prefer a real in-depth look at overclocking over just a short mention. This is a topic that deserves it's own episode i think.
And there are people like me, who run their system mostly at stock all the time. I have played around a bit to see how far i can push it, but then i set everything back to stock for everyday use. Why? Because i want to enjoy this PC for many years to come, and don't want to risk degrading my CPU or chipset just for 20% more performance. And i also enjoy how silent the PC is right now. Pushing the CPU would mean a lot more heat, more fan noise.

that's usually the case with most hardware these days, games just aren't all the demanding on the hardware anymore, the next "big leap" is raytracing and even that doesn't have much justification for gaming even if it did run well.

I went from an Asus Sabertooth 990FX/ AMD FX 8350 to an Asus TUFB350M/R5 1600X to get an M.2 socket, PCIe gen3 x16 socket and DDR4 speed improvement. I was happy with the Piledriver and just wanted faster NVME drives and DDR4. One week of Ryzen and I only booted the Piledriver to run O/S updates. Everything was so much faster. I can'tsay which component made the difference, but the Package upgrade was terrific.

But for similar price There are better options, there are several Xeon 6 and 8 cores to pick from, i7 2600, i5 3570 - 4570 - 4590, I believe even the Ryzen 3 1200 can be had used pretty cheap with a cheap am4 board and compare in gaming. I've been using an FX-8350 for rather heavy gaming since 2013 with no issues... It's survived many hardware upgrades over the years, including two GPUs, RAM, and multiple hard drives, plus the machine is on 24/7, and has been since 2013, restarting only a handful of times per year. All of this, and the stock-speed CPU is still kicking just fine.

You popped up on my recommendations and I was surprised!
I don't even have an 8350, I have an 8320. This was when I built my first computer ever and was just throwing on parts I had money for at the time. For years I considered my computer (perhaps laughably) "high-end" since I had spent upwards of 500 bucks on it, more money than I had ever had at the time.
I currently run a 960 ssc with some ram and the 8320. And it's only been this year that I've needed to question getting a new computer (I'm getting one for christmas, just taking a while). Literally I could play everything at or close to 60fps until the most current games came out.. but now my parts are certainly showing their a ge.
Anyways storytime aside, thanks for making this video!

Still being on a very tight budget I recently treated myself to an 8350, and it will still be a few months until I can upgrade cpu. I already know that for me it'll be happy with this rig, but it's heartening to see the overview and opinions of others in similar situations. For now I'm not ruling out a Radeon card since who knows what the market will do in another three months, but the 1060 still seems the apparent best choice (though it kind of sucks how the prices are still pegging back upwards since Christmas).

What is really funny is that not only is my old FX8320 still usable, but the Q9550 is as well. My son inherited my FX8320-HD7970 gaming system and loves it, and I wanted to upgrade my wifes' computer that is a Q9550, GTX470, and 8GB DDR2 1066 with an ASUS x38 Workstation motherboard, because I have an extra Ryzen build a customer cancelled. But she insist on keeping it until it is no longer usable and it still works perfect for what she does. Not only that, the Q9550 runs our video management server and saves all our IP camera footage as well as serving as her primary computer.
We hate using landfills, and I think it is a shame how people throw away the old that still works fine. I put old computers to use and reformat often, and I try to dispose of as little as possible. When my son wants an upgrade in a couple years I will turn his computer into a Linux box. This is the kind of review I love to see. Old does not equal bad. It is just a little less efficient, but it can still do the same things.

Triple 27 inch monitors and it does fine for everyday tasks (and gaming). I installed originally with Windows 8. It wasn't great, seemed slow at times, but when getting Windows 10, it changed everything. I planned to upgrade it to an 8350 (like a year ago) but there isn't really any point and I just rather save the money for a Ryzen build anyways. Still though if you don't have the money now and need a great PC, the 6350/8350 are probably the place to look at, at least for budget builds. The FX series is still amazing to this day.

That more represents a GPU bottleneck if I'm not mistaken. And you'll have to forgive me for asking this question but with the greatest game of all time, fallout 76, hahaha, I have personally found that I'm having stutter because of it's always online state. I experienced many of the same stutter issues as you did, even though I have a 6800 k, 16 gigs of 3200 megahertz ram, and a GTX 1080. but again I really like your videos please don't take this as an indictment these are just questions that I had hope to hear response thanks 😀

Kind of like a 9900K will out perform the 2700x at 1080p with both using a GTX 1080Ti. If Both systems see 100% GPU utilization, the 9900K system will still perform better. This is a similar case here. While some games will see 100% GPU utilization, the 1060 is still being held back. Some of these games will not take advantage of all 8 threads, so you’ll never see cpu usage at 100%. Sorry if it doesn’t make sense, still trying to figure out the best way to explain it. Edit* the different isn’t very large, but there is a slight difference.
I also play FO76 on a similar system, 5820K @ 4GHz, 16GB 3000MHz and this same GTX 1060. I do run into frame latency issues, but nowhere near this bad. Spike of up 500ms is game stopping. I’ve seen them up to 100ms on my system, which isn’t great, but again nothing like the FX system.

@@F2FTech thanks for the clarification. It did not occur to me to take into account the number of threads being taxed. As an avid car Guy I should have actually thought about that because a 350 horsepower v8 is working much less to produce it's power than a 350 horsepower 4 cylinder. Weird comparison I admit, but it's how my brain makes sense of it. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and I enjoy all of your videos.

"[...]Both systems will see 100% GPU utilization[...]" This not true, in many videos you can see clearly that the Intel CPUs have more fps and gpu usage, because the CPU can extract more power from the GPU. When the GPU reaches 100% use it's already using all of the power it has, it was GPU bottleneck in this video. Sorry for bad english.

    Really Great Video Man!
I have been rocking the 8350 black edition since launch-late 2012. I have been using a windforce 280x 4gb. It's been pretty good. ARMA III is a game that runs horrible on this CPU. I am been wanting to upgrade to a new PC but I have been really not needing it. I don't play alot of AAA games. You inspired me to maybe get a new GPU and mess around with overclocking the CPU. I recently bought a good overclocking motherboard. I have heard you can get some pretty significant clock increases with the 8350 black edition.
    Cheers dude.

I still rock the FX-4100 and now have been rocking the GTX 950, and I have no issues playing just about any AAA title on ultra or high settings at 1080. If I had the money to upgrade my PC, I would either go with the FX-8350 and an RX 570 or upgrade to a Ryzen 5 with a new mobo. Otherwise unless my computer craps out and can no longer play MMOs, I'll keep rocking what I've got until I can afford an upgrade.

Consoles are powered by APU's and they are able to run games well because every console is the same so it only needs to be designed once. Every PC is different so the game has to be made to work on a ton more hardware.

    • @hkoizumi3134
      @hkoizumi3134 5 років тому +2

That's actually half true. Yes, PC has "tons" of hardware but they share one common API. It can either be Direct X or Open API like Vulkan. There are common misconceptions that developers need to design or program for individual hardware. That can't be further from truth. On PC, it is unified under common standard. What's different about PC to console is, the optimization of visual/performance. On console, it is handled by developers. On the PC, both developers and users are responsible.

    • @drizzlebizzle

@@adryerwithabrickinit9231 I guess i was being to broad in my statement. While yes the consoles use a APU. The APU is just CPU cores and GPU compute units on the same silicon. Now the CPU portion of the consoles use a Jaguar core which is just a variation of the same CPU architecture as the 8350 Vishera or its other relative Kaveri. Although the Jaguar is actually lower powered and lower performing. As for optimization, yes the games run closer to the silicon buts its not so different from Vulkan, DX12 or Mantle. Much like what Koizumi said. So again its not really crazy that the 8350 is still valid at gaming but of course in the PC world it is weak.

@@hkoizumi3134 what he means is that if the hardware is fixed, they can set better render targets, and over time, optimize techniques to extract more out of that hardware. it's true and it'll always be true, no matter the generation or how easy it is to program.
it's like racing. Doesn't matter how good a driver you are, your first laps are never going to be your best. if you do it over and over on the same track you'll gradually master it down to perfection. But if you keep changing tracks every 10 minutes you'll have a hard time racing against someone with more focus than you.
dunno how relatable that is to people who don't race.
ps: also consoles have lower level access to hardware, so they'll perform a bit better than equivalent pc hardware. just don't expect miracles from this advantage.

FX is super easy to overclock, that's why it still holds the world record for highest overclock ever achieved (ridiculously close to 9 Ghz). It just starts eating an enormous amount of power, just like the modern Intel chips.
Actually, I take that back, Intel currently pulls insane amounts of power compared to FX. The 7980XE easily pulls 600w on water... I would need about 1.8 Vcore on FX to do the same, and probably need liquid nitrogen to do safely (I don't think my phase cooler at -25c under load would be enough). Even the 32 core/64 thread TR 2990WX has a hard time pulling the same power as the 18c/36t Intel chip, its getting ridiculous with even the 8 core pulling around 250w...

I'm still using an FX8350 to this day. I have a 3 monitor setup and I have a Rift S that I VR game on. Some CPU intensive games will have some stuttering if you're watching a twitch stream on another monitor but bumping that OC up to 4.5Ghz takes care of the problem.
It's definitely a CPU that to this day still works "well enough". I haven't come across anything that I can't play yet and most things I still play at high settings with the exception of shadows. I've been thinking of upgrading for a few years now but I keep talking myself out of it because there isn't an actual need to upgrade.
