Yeah. Super versatile. He could make his voice sound like the singer from whichever band he was ripping off on any given dogshit hack track that he was recording. He's the most famous local bar cover band singer ever.
@@Camel_glasshouseagreed, without a doubt, but the distance in talent between Layne/Chris and the others is astronomical. The other 8 aren't even in the same universe as Layne and Chris in my humble opinion.
Cornell easily outshined Staley as a singer, no question about it. it's like dude said, this is a layne staley channel so of course he is one, but he couldn't touch Cornell.
@ChromeCobra420 Sure, Cornell is the better singer. No one can sing better than him, and I love him. But we're talking about "Grunge," and Layne was unique. The depth and range of his voice, creativity, and raw power put him at the top of Grunge singers. In fact, he is the quintessential Grunge singer.
However each singer has different qualities to his voice and interpretation of songs and how they should be sung with expression and feel. To me that was the main unique quality of Layne. I think Chris Cornell is an objectively better singer. Especially listening to some of his acoustic work. His phrasing and improvisations are creative and sensitive and just impeccable. But Layne had a voice that was so perfectly suited for their style, plus his harmonies with Jerry, it all just worked so well together that I can’t even dispute Layne being #1. Chris is an extremely close second though, in my opinion.
