  • Today we will be fixing and rigging up the cables and pulleys that work the flaps and ailerons. Hopefully if we get everything right we’ll be able to move the control surfaces from inside the airplane for the first time in months! We are also getting some work done on the Piper Cherokee 160, going for a flight in our Cherokee 140, and doing some maintenance over at the Mr. Dent shop. Check it out!

I think by the time it's done, it might be worth an honorary designation of "401.2" in recognition of how much the 402 has contributed itself to the build

More like 401.8 or something. All that's left of the original 401 is the cabin/fuselage. Everything else is from the 402.

"Starting to not like airplanes"... I loved them until I built my own. When you build, and are responsible for your own maintenance, the "love" can start to fade. I completed my plane 6 years ago and I've reached the point that building and maintaining my plane has sucked the joy out of flying. I never expected this to happen. When you read or watch videos online everyone seems to paint this rosy picture of how great it is to build your own plane. That may the case for a few, but I think many just don't want to admit how the time and effort become just too much after a while.

My flight instructor always taught me a quick and easy way to check controls everytime. I see people always check free controls but I don't hear them say correct before every flight. Easy way is to grab yoke or joystick with one hand, doesn't matter which hand....stick your thumb up while grabbing. Turn the yoke to one side....your thumb will point to the aileron that is supposed to be up....and other side should be down.

Say I would like to call attention to the aileron trim setup. I was flying one of our companies 401's one morning and noticed the aileron trim tab was vibrating... I could feel it in the yoke. The piano hinge on the trim tab had actually worn out. You will want to inspect it very closely, this trim tab had passed a zillion 100 hour inspections. I was the first to notice and squawk the aileron trim tab vibrating in flight. This was back in the 1980's.

Newer pubs show pressing bearings in with non-curing primer on either the hole ID or bearing OD. This is for dissimilar metal protection. Although the way it was originally done there was no primer and no corrosion. Keep up the good work! I always preferred saving an old one verses working on new one. Also when rig is done neutral will be correct.

At 17:45, at $285 for a 25 to 50 gram part, it must have been made out of the overpriced "Because-we-canium"!
    🤔😕🤬
    Thats Outrageous!🤯
Reminds me of when I was working at a Medical device manufacturer in the mid 1980's making PMMA plastic Intraocular lenses.
The cheapest ones they sold cost the patient, north of $700 each for a part that cost about $8 to make!😱
The Guv'ment eventually made them drop their prices!👍
I'm sure the Owners and Share holders weren't happy about that, but damn, they were "Molding Money" there for many years!😁
    Mike in San Diego.🌞🎸🚀🖖
Still kicking myself in the ass for not finishing my Private Pilot training in 1978 when I was 17, when the 1 year old Cessna 172 Skyhawk with Instructor and fuel cost me $27/Hr!
Was just ready to solo when I had to move from Oregon to Arizona for College.
One of the Worst decisions I ever had made FOR me, by my family!🤬😕

Sitting down to watch rebuild rescue is almost as good as being there in person in the hangar. I look in anticipation for Saturday just to see what's new for the 401 ! Every time I pass a local aircraft manufacturer I think of you guys. Kudos !
