Really enjoyed your casual conversation. Especially liked the whole Linux distro talk which seems to be in stark contrast to other Linux focused YT channels. So that was really refreshing.
Out of interest, (drew here), how did the conversation differ from other Linux focused YT stuff? (As I mentioned, I don't listen/watch a ton of Linux stuff these days. In fact I'm *more* likely to listen to Linux podcasts from 10 years ago than recent ones :D)
@@uoou375 For one both of you have reached a point in your Linux/life journey where you just want things to work and don't feel the need to constantly fiddle with things. Which is in contrast with some of these hyperactive Linux YT channels, where it seems they are constantly installing a new distro saying its the best thing since sliced bread. None of them actually seem to enjoy using their platform for any particular task or job. As a viewer I don't find any value in these peoples content. Its very shallow. Where as you guys are so comfortable with each of your personal configurations and then small talk about that is infinitely more interesting to me at least.
Drew what led to to hyprland over sway? I had the impression it was basically the same with extra bells and whistles that I didn't care for. It also seems like you don't care for the bells and whistles either though so am I missing another reason to use it? I am admittedly also using gnome a bit these days on my laptop. I don't use that machine enough to want to fuck around so when something isn't configured or not working as expected I just swapped to gnome cause I couldn't be bothered and have just left it that way. Gnome still feels a bit cumbersome but it just seems to be the least annoying by default if you don't want to mess around with things too much.
Hyperland over Sway mainly because I prefer an automatic tiler over a manual one. And all I really want is master/stack layout, which Hyprland does well. So yeah, I'm using Hyprland with all the animations turned off (aside from the change workspace one, that one's kinda nice). I don't even have gaps. And my borders are 1px. I'm essentially using Hyprland to mimic DWM, and it gets very very close. I was *very* happy on DWM (with a couple of patches). It was perfect for me in use. I didn't love the manual patching and recompiling to configure. I basically want my WM to do three things and only those three things: 1. Give me windows (with as little decoration as possible) 2. Put them in master/stack layout. 3. Handle workspaces and monitors sensibly (either like DWM or like BSPWM) And while it can do a ton of other stuff, Hyprland can be made to do only that. Hope that answers your question! And thanks for listening!
@@uoou375just made it the handheld discussion. I have been in the exact same situation as you the last couple of weeks. I am eyeing out an RG35XX SP. I love the idea of little clams shell portable device. I have almost pulled the impulse trigger on it a couple of times but I am also not nostalgic for any old stuff and generally don't care about replying anything older. So it's completely impractical but I just think they are so cool and I want to fuck around with it. I will probably grab it on a sale at some point so I would welcome your game recs in the future.
@@Regna4824 fwiw, it arrived yesterday and it's a lovely thing. My logic was, yeah, I'm not nostalgic but there must be old good games I missed out on. And of course I could easily run them on my PC with an emulator but there's something nice about having a dedicated device I can just sit comfortably with and play on. So yeah, spent all of yesterday playing Tactics Ogre on the SNES and loving it. Showed it to my niece earlier today and she spent half an hour on the original Wip3out and loved that. Also it's great that it's proper Linux and I can just SSH into it. And I'd definitely lean more towards the Linux ones rather than the Android based ones. Android always feels clunky to me. But that might differ for others. The RG35XX SP looks great. Pricier than the one I got but bigger and does more. And all of these things are surprisingly cheap for what they can do. And I think going in looking for good games you've missed rather than out of nostalgia is actually more interesting.
@@uoou375 Yes I have had the same though about old games I missed. I just assume a lot of them might be a struggle to get into these days. But I think playing it on this type of form factor adds to charm and fun. A lot of those games would probably seem boring and ridiculous if emulating on a modern pc. The price on that one I think is the only that stopped me pulling the trigger. It's just slightly more than I would like to spend on something that may just be a bit of fun to fuck around with. But they are surprisingly good value all round generally I think. I very likely will pick it up next time there is an Aliexpress sale.
37:50 Hm, all of the things you mentioned are actually present in GNOME's system menu area: * VPN icon is shown if it's active. * If OBS is recording then there's an orange screen recording indicator in the same area. * Bluetooth icon also shows up when it's on and active. So neither of those are an issue even in stock vanilla GNOME.
Debian LTS is fine, it's been my default for over a decade now, I use the xfce version too. On the YT thing, just post random 💩 on here, I for one will eventually get round to watching it. Personally I'm not a fan of any form of social media these days, even on the fedi. Keep on posting dudes 🖖
that was a damn deep podcast I vibe with you guys we are already fucked, this is basically a fact. lets just share what we got, so that we go down with dignity btw: I really enjoy Linux Content. Hardware hacking is cool, talks are cool, mii beta, Brodie Robertsons Tech over Tea, lots of cool stuff.
same here I started experimenting with it more on an old netbook that was starting to get too bogged down by windows 10 to the point that windows 11 didn't even feel like an option anymore.
Btw I like Grayjay for content consumption and also commenting, and UA-cam is becoming reaally problematic. If you are on multiple supported websites (UA-cam, twitch, peetube, nebula, patreon, [rumble, kick, odysee / garbage platforms]) would be great to make link these accounts using the "polycentric" protocol
Its good to see you two back

@@pronstorestiffi Thanks for explaining, absolutely get what you mean. And yeah, I feel the same way.
I don't talk about Linux either, I just use it. And I don't care about the latest and greatest either. Stability is much more important to me.

the first thing i think about Denver is traffic everything else is nice but that sucks lol
Debian stable + xfce ended my distrohopping too. I still love linux but it's not really a hobby anymore.
