What a racing car collection of world class PORSCHE engineering - and the color scheme of 911/996-GT1 is outstanding awesome too !!! Bedankt, dear BM-Team, for this fantastic video, and for All your othergreat works - love it !!!!!! Cheers, Frank
It held the record for the fastest average speed lap on a closed course in 1975. Doing 217MPH at Talledega. It was hitting 240 on the straights. Record was broken in the late 80s.
Yes but it has not done a timed run in anger there, has it? ... I would like to see a 917-30 do just one lap somewhere, in anger, or even a replica do it, just to see it at full tilt, since most if not all of the 1973 CanAm season racing seems to have been lost to time.
0- 200mph in under 20sec, the Porsche 917/30 was so dominant in the American Can/Am series, that it destroyedCan/Am racing for good Just imagine, the car at the back, the stunning 917/30 occasionally developed twice the amount of horsepower of the car in front of it, the 962.
Probably not well. If you look at the equivalent lap times at a place like say, Road America, you'd find that models like the 917/30 would be running with GTEs and getting smoked by LMP2 cars with half the power and 150kg more weight. Around a circuit like this, the gap would probably be bigger because this is a circuit which places a lot of emphasis on agility. I'm not saying the old cars aren't fun to watch. I'm as nostalgic as the next man.
The GT1 (993) was made for the 1996 race year which still retained many body components of the 993 911. The 1997 version of the the same GT1 based some of those components (though not all) on the 996 911. Since most of the GT1 (996) body still retained much of the original GT1 (993) shape, the GT1 (996) version was called the GT1 Evo to differentiate the two. The GT1-98 on the other hand was an all new design partially based on the design cues from the (996) 911 and none from the (993) 911. Thus the "Evo" designation was not needed and was just called the GT1-98.
All I know is they sound tame next to the roar of the 917 and the whoosh of the 917-30... best car ever! Saw it at hands of Donahue in 73 Watkins Glen Canam. But the 911 turbo whale tales were impressive too as a 'low cost' alternative 😉
02:44 Mark Donohue??? Wow! I remember first seeing and hearing this 917/30 during Can-Am days of yore. It was fast and powerful but so quiet that it could barely be heard above the thunder of 8L Chevy engines.....but this was a Rat Killer.
@@thethirdman225 I know that Mark Donahue died in a racing accident, but I did not know Gijs van Lennep. He is fair haired like Mark, but clearly somewhat older. Seeing him brought back fond memories and my comment was a lame attempt at being clever. I saw Mark Donahue numerous times in CanAm and TransAm races and I was fortunate to have had a brief conversation with him.
It depends on the track. Aero wans´t so efficent and the car does not have that much downforce compared to an LMP1 etc. but with good tyres and with full power, i guess it wouldn´t be to bad ;)
Uncompetitive. There's a video of a McLaren M8F running at Spa against a McLaren F1 GT. The F1 GT is three seconds a lap faster around Spa - which is a fast track, while being 300 kg heavier and having 200 hp less. That's against a car from 25 years ago.
Slow as pace over laps comes from other things than pure power these days, sadly for this enthusiast. Aero ruins racing, always has and pretty much always will. I'd take a grid full of CanAm monsters from 1966 to 1973 than all modern stuff, Group C over anything and Group 5/6 over anything, bar Group C.
That’s not really a 996. It’s the 911 GT1-98. I don’t think Porsche differentiated between the various 911 derivatives by using the “99x” naming at the time this was originally racing.
The one you called 996 GT1 is in fact called the "GT1 1998". But do not change anything both in your description and the contents of your videos. Cheers.
Yap, there is an first version of the gt1 911 on the base of the 993 before the 98' we have seen here..she was built for the le mans race in 1996,u can see on the lights and shape.and for me she's more beautiful..
I’m amazed they had them idling for so long, they aren’t designed to sit idling for long periods because their radiators are made just big enough to shed heat at speed.
This is the problem with America we just don't get the exposure to the great European marquis. Most Americans don't get the HP these Porsches produce new mind the handling. These are the cars that stopped can am which if it continued we would give got it.
yes the drivers do not know what they are doing. Gijs van Lennep won Le Mans twice (he is in the CanAm 917/30) and Jan Lammers is in the 917KH he only won Le Mans once and will be starting his 24th le Mans this year.
Here's why I label the video as rubbish: I am a huge fan of the car and numerous times, saw it race (in person). The first 3 minutes of that dribble was nothing more the engines being revved....no action.
Clint Myers yes but some people like that and after that you have some pretty rare footage of them being raced not pushed 100% but atleast they drive them
stephenmwyatt2 shut up american boy! Go watch your nescar shit. We Europeans don't need such underdeveloped bullshit. How can you disrespect these legendary cars? Fuck outta here boy

The 917-30 is 1972 technology with 1,500 H.P. and a weight of about 1,700 lbs...you do the math....possibly the fastest race car ever.
It held the record for the fastest average speed lap on a closed course in 1975. Doing 217MPH at Talledega. It was hitting 240 on the straights. Record was broken in the late 80s.
Saw that 917-30 at Road Atlanta in 72. It just dominated!
@@gilbaldwin9347 That was probably a 917/10.
@@thethirdman225 It was Mark Donohue in the Sunoco livery, so maybe I got the wrong year.
yet the driver here couldnt find the gas pedal.
was he using 100 of those 1500HPs? ;)
The 917 is so beautiful! Great video
All of this cars are master pieces this why Porsche is a legend
That green GT1 looks sweet. Love them all!
This is about the only video on UA-cam with a 917/30 running :)
It has been to Goodwood a couple of times.

A 917/30 driven in anger would be pretty dangerous these days, ludicrous power to weight.

Peter Lewis 1500 HP in a 800 kg car is just mental.
Best sound video , I have heard in a long time
Super cool Porsche Le Mans racing cars and I really like the engine music. Awesome film. 😀🏎🏁🏆
Geez that 917/30 is moving a lot of atmosphere
this is what Heaven on earth looks like
(and sounds like!)
This is proof of Evolution
That's where a Selfie Stick comes in useful! The 917 sounds fantastic.
Filming race cars with selfie stick makes video so much more interesting I agree! We manufacture in Pgh, Pa best one! Go to readyactiongo, com
Wish they were on the same tires and did qualifying laps.... It would have been Cool to see how the older models stood up to the newer one.

That 911 gt1!

The Fastest yes, before the 917 came to the end of its time it did a amazing 254 mph, a speed that was to stand long in to the future.
Oh pahlease. The car averaged 356 km/h (221 mph) at Talladega but there are no figures for anything else.

I've always called it the 996 GT1 because it had the lights of the normal 911 (996) from that time.
Then do not change anything if that's the way you call it ! BTW, at the times, the GT1 was a 996 and the GT2 was a 993...

yes the drivers do not know what they are doing. Gijs van Lennep won Le Mans twice (he is in the CanAm 917/30) and Jan Lammers is in the 917KH he only won Le Mans once and will be starting his 24th le Mans this year.
What an idiot...you don't race these cars at their full potential anymore. They are priceless and the 917s can't be replaced.
LOL "driven poorly"... Excuse me, who the fuck are you?
The only part of your remark that is correct is, gorgeous and timeless.
Pure exotica driven by rich amatures.
You wouldn't drive a 917 to it's full potential anymore moron...if you crash it it can't be replaced...SMH
fw1421 didn’t know that amatures won le mans. Jan Lammers en Gijs van Lennep. Google them both excellent race drivers. up there with the best😎
