I heard this tune 1982 signals tour. My first Rush concert. 18 yrs old. It blew my mind!!! And still does now, may 3 2020. Whew!!!! RIP Neil Peart........ Amen....
The myterious guitar chord progressions, the enigmatic bass drum obstinato pounding like a heartbeat, the magnificent voice of Geddy echoing like a warning to us through the powerful lyrics are forever embedded deep in my brains. This creepy song which significance is so evidently palpable nowdays. That's why I worship RUSH since childhood.🤘
Anyone with me to think that Neil's drums were best sounding ever? There's something amazing about this Tama set he used, that just cracks right... Copeland(Police) and he used the same drums back then. This live sound rules as well, they've missed on a few recordings more recently. And Alex just kills it on this song. Never heard a guitarist attempt a song the way he does, so he scores highest grades for creativity from me.
Funny you mention Stewart Copeland. I immediately thought Rush were influenced by the Police at the time I bought Signals (circa 1986 or1987)... and not only because of the drums... Rush even got th einfluence of Andy Summer's guitar sound, the occasional reggae influences... I didn't know that the late Neil Peart and and Stewart Copeland used similar drumkits... But they did sound similar around this time.. Two fantastic drummers... Even though I know and like more of Neil Peart. Copeland changed his style terribly after the Police, on the few albums that I heard.
ROBERT PINAZZA Roberto he sounded best from 79-85! Those Tamas were insane. Some of the best ever made. Don't forget we're talking about somebody who tuned them in such a great way and his crew did a great job with sound that"Exit... Stage Left: has to be in the top 20 best sounding recorded drum sets of all time in any genre of music!
High grades for being extremely original, got his own sound, tone, brilliant at filling the sound out with "drone strings" (like on Freewill and others) using delay and chorus, 12-string majestic sweeps. Peart always seems to be doing something different, hitting cymbals and and rolls in places you can't predict, using every element of his drum kit to create such a massive but dynamic attack and of course Geddy filling out the whole sound with perfectly placed notes and lush keyboards. I must admit that Signals borrowed some or was influenced by The Police during their Zenyatta Mondatta release - nothing wrong with that!
Hi, Robert - Yes, I'm with you on that. I still play an old white Tama kit (it was the cheapest they made and the best I could afford way back in 1982!) as if I'd rented it. Nothing fancy, no frills, no prisoners, no mercy; tuned from hard rock super saggy sloppy to jazz-funk marching-band tight, and still no breakages. With respect, though, I think Neil Peart's sound may be more to do with the tremendous amount of power that he and people like Copeland and Cobham play with. You can buy the same kit, but it won't sound the same until you (I mean until 'one', not you in person, Robert!) - until you play with the same kind of force that these guys generate. Having said that, I find Neil's DW noodlings entirely underwhelming, so maybe I should shut up because I don't know what I'm talking about. (Clarification note: I love the man, I'm just not mad about his post-Tama drum sound.) Guitars and especially basses have very distinctive voices. Fender (IMHO) lured Geddy away from Rickenbacker by promising to back-engineer the famous 4000 Series sound for him (allegedly!), which gave him both a nice endorsement deal and let him retain his wonderful signature snarl; I think Alex could coax fantastic music out of absolutely anything - even George Formby's ukulele. But percussion's different; and the best way to get great and difficult-to-emulate drum sounds out of a kit is to beat seven kinds of cr*p out of it! Only... musically, not like an ape. Gotta handle those rebounds like a pro or you'll wreck your hands. Maybe that's what made the Tamas sound so good - people weren't afraid to play them hard. I mean REALLY hard. The drums and hardware can handle it, but unfortunately it takes a huge toll on your body after a few decades. (!) At least there's a wealth of audio and video left from some of the best players of some of the best music from the best years for us to enjoy. :-)
In case you don't actually have these lyrics memorized: We've got nothing to fear but fear itself Not pain or failure, not fatal tragedy Not the faulty units in this mad machinery Not the broken contacts in emotional chemistry? And the things that he fears Are a weapon to be held against him. Can any part of life be larger than life? Even love must be limited by time And those who push us down that they might climb Is any killer worth more than his crime? Like a steely blade in a silken sheath We don't see what they're made of They shout about love, but when push comes to shove They live for things they're afraid of. And the knowledge that they fear Is a weapon to be used against them. He's not afraid of your judgement He knows of horrors worse than your Hell He's a little bit afraid of dying But he's a lot more afraid of your lying. And the things that he fears Are a weapon to be held against him.
My favourite song on Signals, one of my top favourite Rush albums. I am not ashamed to say that I tend to prefer their 80's era, with lots of keyboards.
+Marc Moingeon I agree. I love Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows but I think those albums were turning points when they began to abandon their unique styles of odd time signatures, killer guitar solos and longer instrumental parts. I never pull out any of their CDs from Hold Your Fire and later anymore. But of course after writing such incredible music their first 10-12 years, they were bound for a change.
66limelight Your comment surprises me because I love "Hold Your Fire" even more than "Power Windows"... It's my top favourite Rush album. Don't you think it's a logical following to P.W. ? It's got great instrumental parts, really. More than on "Grace Under Pressure", I would say. Some say it's got a clinical sound but I think that it's less "cold" than on Grace Under Pressure, once more. Maybe you grew up with them... And that change our appreciation, when we grew up with a band... I discovered them in 1984/85, I was only 16/17 but already quite knowledgeable in rock music, I loved the 70's more. I am a progressive rock lover (well, not much of what's released nowadays appeals to me) so that's maybe why I like the "keyboards era" more. I'm not too keen on the albums before "A Farewell To Kings" (the sound was fairly dry and Geddy Lee's voice was an acquired taste on them, and even later), but I own them all and I listen to them from time to time.

Thanks so much Rush, you were wonderful for soooooo long. This concert, this time, 1984, i think of all my friends, young teenagers hanging out then, the 80s was both ridiculous and wonderfully creative with an unmatched exciting vibe, what id do to go back for even a little while.....
Genius. How these three came up with so much intelligent shit for so many years is simply remarkable. Blown away by these guys when I was a kid and I still am decades later.

I live in North Carolina United States. I have beloved Canadian family in Ontario near Point Burwell. These three fine men have kept me awake on many occaisions while driving 15.5 hours. Alex, Geddy and my boy Neil would FORCE you to think.
I hear you. We're all hurting these days. I broke the news to a client 2 days ago, she hadn't heard of his death a full 7 days after it happened. She's a researcher so we can forgive her for being absorbed in her work in the lab and out of the limelight. I think Neil would understand.
I agree! I've devoured this video for 30 years and the bass at the end of this song while the blonde guy plinks and plonks around annoys the hell out of me.
This is my favorite Rush moment - I found this tape on BETAMAX before it was ever released on DVD - my dad taped it off of MTV when it aired - I value that tape to this day
Wow, I've been a fan for 40 years, saw them dozens of times and since Neil's passing been watching and rediscovering tons of videos. I think if you had to capture all 3 in their absolute prime, this might be it. Never saw this exact video till now, in addition to it being one of my favorite lesser known rush songs, Neil is at the absolute effortless top of his game, Alex is shredding, Geds vocals are strong as hell, bass tight as can be. Absolute perfection.
I had the privilege of seeing Rush live in the early 80’s 3 times. The shows were simple what you saw what you heard was what you got. They were professional on stage and nothing to distract from their music which to the day Neil passed away they maintained their professionalism there will never be another band like Rush for along time.
Absolutely. Even his Ludwig's had some snap. I NEVER thought his DW's sounded as good. That could be either because of the quality/wood or the guy tuning them ('Gump').
My first Rush concert was the GUP Tour and saw them again for Power Windows in 85'. Caught them on every tour up to the point where Geddy's voice became too messed up (early 2000's).
With just three on stage and the complexity of the music they played, there was absolutely nowhere to hide. Everyone had to make everything count, 100% of the time.
I still can't understand how a band can be so precise and loose at the same time while manifestating so much emotion. Its a wonder to me. The best drummer ever, the best bassist ever and the most underrated guitarrist ever. RUSH
Neil isn't just keeping perfect time with a really tricky bit of drumming (beautiful demonstration of limb independence), but is flipping the sticks around in apparent boredom. Incredible.
Vamplore here and i am here tonight to introduce a very special song for you (DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO IF YOU DO NOT HAVE 3D GLASSES - OR YOU WILL ONLY BE WATCHING IT IN ONE HALF D)
Rush get a lot of flack for their 80s period but I think if they hadn’t moved forward with the times, they would have been left behind. All the greats go through different creative periods, Beatles, Bowie, Madonna -it’s the progression and the “what will they do next?” approach that keeps the appeal for the listener. Grace Under Pressure is my favourite album but a very close second is Hemispheres -the two are poles apart sonically but the fact the same band made both is the reason I love them. ❤️
Always hard to pick a fave rush song ,but this is so close. It has everything. Beautiful ,haunting ,timeless. Rip Neil and thanks for making the soundtrack of my life
I saw this concert tour in New Orleans. Great show. It was my older brother's first rock concert. The interesting fact was he knew more about Geddy Lee's bass playing than "the drummer." To say he was blown away by all of them (but specifically Mr. Peart) was an understatement. I remember Neal's rat tail hair.
This was always the definitive version of this song for me. Dubbed this video from my cousin in 86 and every note is ingrained. Geddy’s bass is so clear and Alex just owns its all! Of course Neil is in top form as always. My favorite Rush era
there is a saying " Do you know anyone who is skilled in his work , he will be stationed before kings ! That definitely was Neil , he was the MASTER of his trade
Just so happy and blessed that this band's career unfolded during my lifetime and I was there for most of it.
Yep, my high school buddy played 2112 my senior year and I was hooked.

I agree! I've devoured this video for 30 years and the bass at the end of this song while the blonde guy plinks and plonks around annoys the hell out of me.
God, I hated that Steinberger. Glad Ged dumped it.
04.30 the build up to the solo and the erupting solo are one of my favorite Alex moments... should go on forever
The only way to watch Rush was in awe!
Forgot about this one - great tune!
This is my favorite Rush moment - I found this tape on BETAMAX before it was ever released on DVD - my dad taped it off of MTV when it aired - I value that tape to this day
My first rush concert that I attended , 12th row floors. I think I was 17. I was in awe of this band and still am.
Seven months after Neil's passing it's still hard to listen to Rush. Just makes me so sad.
Hail to The Professor, forever in history, and with present and future waves of crazy human crises.
There are a few things I couldn’t imagine my life without.
RUSH is one of them
Alex!!!!!! wtf is going on with your hair ,but i must say still my favorite subtile Lifeson solo ....amazing.
"You'll only being seeing it in one half D". I LOVE IT HAHA
Neil Peart is perfect.
This whole 3 piece band was perfect together!
One of my favourite Rush songs...RIP Neil Peart.
Yes
Never get tired of this song, so balanced...every instrument played to perfection...love that guitar solo❤ and of course the Great Neil Peart.🥁🇨🇦
The payoff at the end of the solo is massive!
love the fact that they showed a sense of humor in what would otherwise be considered eerie and dark songs
Count Floyd and the wolves howling HILARIOUS...THIS SONG IS FREKING AWESOME!!!!!!.2020...RIP MAD PROFESSOR...
Look at the drums!
Listen to the drums.
Such appropriate lyrics for today
I met Neil briefly on this tour and talk about in my tribute podcast to him. It still makes me laugh to this day. He will be missed!
I had the privilege of seeing Rush live in the early 80’s 3 times. The shows were simple what you saw what you heard was what you got. They were professional on stage and nothing to distract from their music which to the day Neil passed away they maintained their professionalism there will never be another band like Rush for along time.
The is a hidden gem 💎
I could have lived at any point in time. I was lucky enough to live while Rush was giving is this gift. Incredible.
"Signals" è un album meraviglioso!
The level of performance and intensity of every song live is astonishing. Never been a band like them. No one close to their level.
One of Neil's most difficult and creative drumming compositions.
Absolutely. Even his Ludwig's had some snap. I NEVER thought his DW's sounded as good. That could be either because of the quality/wood or the guy tuning them ('Gump').
the instrumental part is AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Back when Neil had a ponytail, wore a regular baseball hat, and played some bad ass Tama drums. THIS was the era for me.
I was there, I was 16 ish.1984 Maple Leaf Gardens. Best venue and best concert ever.
Nice song, top three from this album with also Losing it and The Analog Kid. Subdivisons is also great.
I totally agree with you!
All r great
Or, as the Canadians would say:
"Beauty, eh?!"
Beer and Donuts, eh?
Genius everywhere you look, so glad I re found this !!!
Neil in his prime seen it many of times , thank you I go back if I could
My first Rush concert was the GUP Tour and saw them again for Power Windows in 85'. Caught them on every tour up to the point where Geddy's voice became too messed up (early 2000's).
With just three on stage and the complexity of the music they played, there was absolutely nowhere to hide. Everyone had to make everything count, 100% of the time.
just one of the best songs of all time. quite simple!
I still can't understand how a band can be so precise and loose at the same time while manifestating so much emotion. Its a wonder to me. The best drummer ever, the best bassist ever and the most underrated guitarrist ever. RUSH
It has been a long time since I have heard this song. I forgot how much that I liked it.
Neil isn't just keeping perfect time with a really tricky bit of drumming (beautiful demonstration of limb independence), but is flipping the sticks around in apparent boredom. Incredible.
How did this guy do it?
As a drummer, that Peart's kit is the one that I love. As a Rush fan, there never be a band like them. Eternal love for them.
10-30-84 The Omni Atlanta Ga. God we were all so young then, can't believe it all went by so quick. Thanks for 40 awesome years!!!
Grace Under Pressure is an Amazing and VERY underrated album. Red Sector A and Distant Early Warning were truly badass and eerie as hell
This song is from
Signals
Always hard to pick a fave rush song ,but this is so close. It has everything.
Beautiful ,haunting ,timeless.
Rip Neil and thanks for making the soundtrack of my life
This is one of my favorite live versions, electric.
My second concert ever was RUSH on their Signals tour. Boise, Idaho USA September 1982. Cost ten bucks. Will never forget it.
My favourite era of Rush xxx
Alex's solo draws you in and consumes your inner being to tears. What a gift he has, and is.
wish more drummers used a 6" tom like this, and a gong bass drum too. old school kicks ass. Neil rules!!
How many drummers out there still have a 6” concert Tom. I love that drum. Real hard to reach though lol.
There will never be a better triad of musicians.
And Lifeson is Just Average . He is 8 th On Guitar World.
This was actually a hilarious intro to a great song. Well done.
This has been the hardest loss l have experienced !!
I have seen RUSH live every tour since Power Windows 1986. In 500 years, RUSH will still be loved.
I loved the beating of the drums here...so played by the master himself...very original.
His Tama sounds so awesome!!! Rip Neil
there is a saying " Do you know anyone who is skilled in his work , he will be stationed before kings ! That definitely was Neil , he was the MASTER of his trade
Oq Peart faz com o hi-hat é impressionante, é muita técnica, performance e criatividade
