Ivan Smith the Y chromosome is not a broken X chromosome. The father either donates a Y chromosome or an X chromosome during fertilization since men have both. So the sex of the offspring is determined the second the egg is fertilized based off of if the sperm cell contains an X chromosome or a Y chromosome.

XYY syndrome is a genetic condition in which a male has an extra Y chromosome.
    Symptoms are usually few.
They may include being taller than average, acne, and an increased risk of learning problems.
The person is generally otherwise normal, including normal fertility.
The condition is generally not inherited from a person's parents but rather occurs as a result of a random event during sperm cell development.
Diagnosis is by a chromosomal analysis.
There are 47 chromosomes, instead of the usual 46, giving a 47,XYY karyotype.
Treatment may include speech therapy or extra help with schoolwork.
    Outcomes are generally good.
    Prevention is not possible.
The condition occurs in about 1 in 1,000 male births.
Many people with the condition are unaware that they have it.
The condition was first described in 1961.

If you only ever search for books in fire places, you will scientifically conclude that all books must be hot, but this is wrong because of *where* you were testing. To truly know what something is or does, you must follow the scientific method, and those scientists did not. They had too many variables.

The acne is caused by extra testosterone. Similarly when growing as a boy, the reason some people are much taller than others is that during puberty when growth happens if testosterone is present, or if an abnormally large amount is present you will grow taller. That's why most women are short, because normally they do not receive much testosterone until they are 20 and mostly done growing.

I advocate the same thing, however environment has by far the strongest influence as environmental stimulus is what shapes genes to begin with and can reshape them in a matter of a single generation if the environmental stimulus drastically changes, meaning in a single generation, a person can drastically become genetically smarter, stronger, fitter, mentally more healthy and more adapted to something than their parents if they are heavily exposed to an external sensory experience that forces their genes to change to adapt to it, entire genes can drastically be altered by an environmental change whether it be cultural, chemical, social, geographic, dietary or otherwise, look up the study of epigenetics.

+Raidillon55 Uhm, intersex people exist. They have genitals that are a mishmash of both male and female (also secondary characteristics that can be all over the place) even though they can have typical male or female DNA.
DNA doesn't tell you everything about a person's physical sex. And then there's Androgen insensitivity syndrome which leads to a person with XY chromosomes to develop like a female would.
There are plenty of conditions that cause physical development we normally don't associate with "female" or "male" chromosone pairs en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex#Disorders_of_sex_development
XX doesn't automatically lead to a female body and XY doesn't automatically lead to a male body.
It's not black and white, and we're just talking about the strictly physical aspects here.
I'm not even going to start about gender identity.

    Does it carry extra information?

This is really interesting. I clearly remember being taught this as true in my first year of high school in my science class. Also, the reverse saying that XXX meant super female, being extra emotional etc.

    Question:
How does a man get two Y chromosomes? I thought he gets a sex gene from each parent respectively. His mother has to be XX and his dad has to be XY. Is it because the extra Y is a mutated X from his mother or father?
It would be great if someone could explain this. Thanks!

+airyballoon When sperm (and eggs) are made chromosomes line up in pairs. One of each pair is pulled to opposite sides (So an X is in one new cell and a Y in the other). Then (in each of the two new cells) the chromosomes line up in single file and half the 'X' or 'Y' is pulled one way, the half the other way. So you should end up with 4 cells with equal amounts of DNA in each (two with X two with Y). However, sometimes the chromosomes don't split equally and you end up with 22 chromosomes in one cell and 24 in the other. This can lead to things like Down's Syndrome etc but if it's the XY chromosomes that do this you can end up with XXY or XYY.

Interesting video. The last line seemed like a bit of a non-sequitur though.

What about XXY? Are those effects minimal as well?

I don't know if its a y but i have an extra chromosome. I don't think its a Y because my mother had told me how the doctor's had said I would be born with down syndrome and to end the pregnancy. Yet here I am perfectly normal and working as a house manager for an IDD group home.
