The myth of the "supermale" and the extra Y chromosome

- In the 1960s and 1970s geneticists pursued a fascinating hypothesis: Is it possible that a man could be born with a criminal gene?

Blaze And Co. when the genes get dispersed the man either releases one X chromosome or one y. Women can only give X chromosomes. Which means that xy is a boy and XX is a girl. An extra y is impossible

it happens in fetuses that are miscarried
A human without an 'X' chromosome would die a stillborn. The 'Y' chromosome helps the body produce testosterone, but the 'X' chromosome is much more important in the survival of the fetus.
they can't exist without an X so it's not possible.

Ivan Smith the Y chromosome is not a broken X chromosome. The father either donates a Y chromosome or an X chromosome during fertilization since men have both. So the sex of the offspring is determined the second the egg is fertilized based off of if the sperm cell contains an X chromosome or a Y chromosome.
Understood the reference
XYY syndrome is a genetic condition in which a male has an extra Y chromosome.
Symptoms are usually few.
They may include being taller than average, acne, and an increased risk of learning problems.
The person is generally otherwise normal, including normal fertility.
The condition is generally not inherited from a person's parents but rather occurs as a result of a random event during sperm cell development.
Diagnosis is by a chromosomal analysis.
There are 47 chromosomes, instead of the usual 46, giving a 47,XYY karyotype.
Treatment may include speech therapy or extra help with schoolwork.
Outcomes are generally good.
Prevention is not possible.
The condition occurs in about 1 in 1,000 male births.
Many people with the condition are unaware that they have it.
The condition was first described in 1961.

My brother has this and yes, he's very aggressive and kinda hyperactive. But still he's a warm person and not anyone with this sydrome is bad or a "criminal". He loves me and my family and he would do anything to protect us. Even if he cannot always control himself, hes trying to change. He's a very strong person with a big heart that's why I love him so much. He got teased a lot in high school, middle school, everywhere just bc he looks older than all the other kids at his school. It's just not fair. I wish he could be happy and proud of himself for what he is. He's such a kind and handsome person and it breaks my heart to see him like this
so do I and my anger is extreme sometimes
I know that I'm amazing When he merks someone don’t be surprised.
I know that I'm amazing doesn’t having XYY cause guys to hit puberty earlier than their XY counterparts ?
that video is actually wrong, having double Y actually makes the man more aggressive and unstable, but not necessasrily he is a criminal, most of these who goes to the prison goes for the same reasons as the ones with just one Y, having two Y's makes you more unstable but it doesnt mean that you are bound to be a criminal, mostly if you have emotional help
Meload Lyra where did u get this info from? The Big Bang theory?
Interesting. I definitely remember learning about that XYY were more likely to go to prison in high school biology (in the late 90s), hopefully they have updated the textbooks by now.
They did, my biology teacher even told us the story of the biais in the studies.
Giving people misandric beliefs from a young age
Probably an exaggeration. Most people with XYY will never even know they have it.

Correction: There is no murder gene that makes us criminals per-se, but things like aggression can be found in our genes such as the warrior gene, Monoamine oxidase A, which is more prevalent in the most violent criminals.
Here's the the problem though, the gene only activates based on upbringing
upbringing just compounds the affect. if you didn't have MAO functioning you'd probably have a seriously addled brain chemistry.

Does having an extra Y chromosome mean you are more likely to have male children?
With 'usual' humans
XX XY
XX XY XX XY
1/2 male
1/2 female
With one having this 'mutation'
XX_ XYY
XX XY XY XX XY XY _X _Y _Y
4/9 male
2/9 female
(3/9 possible dead born)
I don't know if the possibilities with the missing chromosones apply, because usually you get chromosom pairs.
But yes, you might be more likely to have male childrens
wonder if it can run in families
my paternal line hasnt had any female children in generations
In reproduction, male and female chromosomes mix to form the new life.
The funny part is that only the chromosomes of the father will be relevant to the gender/sex of the child.

xy - x female y male
So there are more chances
xx + xyy = xx /xy/xy

So basically they are just only very taller than average, but also slightly dumber in average.
+Phanteus No no no, you missed the whole point; *researches* claim that having this gene will make you tall, dumb, and aggressive, but they only ever tested in prisons and mental institutions. The video its self is basically saying "we don't *know* what XYY does, because its never been properly tested"
If you only ever search for books in fire places, you will scientifically conclude that all books must be hot, but this is wrong because of *where* you were testing. To truly know what something is or does, you must follow the scientific method, and those scientists did not. They had too many variables.

It also relates to upbringing. You can't base the way a person comes out by their genetics alone. They're upbringing probably had a lot to do with why they were the way they were.

Grow up, nobody's offended by science
You're right, nobody should be offended by facts.
That doesn't mean they won't hundreds of hate comments from people offended by science.
Lol
The acne is caused by extra testosterone. Similarly when growing as a boy, the reason some people are much taller than others is that during puberty when growth happens if testosterone is present, or if an abnormally large amount is present you will grow taller. That's why most women are short, because normally they do not receive much testosterone until they are 20 and mostly done growing.
@SmokyAshes ~ And yet, one of the symptoms of men born with 47 XXY are also unusually tall compared to men with XY. I don't pretend to understand why that is, perhaps someone better versed in genetics could explain.
Its so insane. I knew about XYY but not in this light lol. This is so ridiculous.
My aunt had a son last year and it ends up he has the extra y chromosome. The doctors said that it is slowing his muscle growth he was supposed to start crawling a month ago but he still doesnt. Do you think this is from the extra y
Just studied about it in the class and they also taught us that the xyy are aggressive due to the high testosterone levels in their body.
Masculinity and Femininity is as much defined by your environment than as the genes within us
That's not how you science properly science-people!
I didn't even know there was such a thing as an XYY person. I was simply oblivious of this myth.
Other combinations too. XXY, for instance.
Both genetics and culture matters, as it stands people seem to only want it to be one or the other.
And the opposite is you? Cause you seem kind of disappointed the extra chromosome has nothing to do with their behaviour.
I advocate the same thing, however environment has by far the strongest influence as environmental stimulus is what shapes genes to begin with and can reshape them in a matter of a single generation if the environmental stimulus drastically changes, meaning in a single generation, a person can drastically become genetically smarter, stronger, fitter, mentally more healthy and more adapted to something than their parents if they are heavily exposed to an external sensory experience that forces their genes to change to adapt to it, entire genes can drastically be altered by an environmental change whether it be cultural, chemical, social, geographic, dietary or otherwise, look up the study of epigenetics.

She also said that masculinity and femininity is as much defined by the world around us (I would claim more) as they are by our genes.
+Raidillon55 Uhm, intersex people exist. They have genitals that are a mishmash of both male and female (also secondary characteristics that can be all over the place) even though they can have typical male or female DNA.
DNA doesn't tell you everything about a person's physical sex. And then there's Androgen insensitivity syndrome which leads to a person with XY chromosomes to develop like a female would.
There are plenty of conditions that cause physical development we normally don't associate with "female" or "male" chromosone pairs en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex#Disorders_of_sex_development
XX doesn't automatically lead to a female body and XY doesn't automatically lead to a male body.
It's not black and white, and we're just talking about the strictly physical aspects here.
I'm not even going to start about gender identity.
thank god i dont have any of those problems and am normal
what tv show was the line "so he has an extra y chromosome, that's the criminal gene" from?
When two unknown variables are not enough and you ask for another unknow.
its all fun and games until the guy with xyy crushes the guy with yy.
It's always easier to blame problems on some extraordinary factor than to accept that the potential for agression and crime is present in any regular person. The XYY myth catching on does not surprise me at all.

I don't want to be this guy but I genuinely feel like I have this. I clearly remember that my mom told that I have this rare chromosome of sorts that the doctors found out, however it was a long time ago so my mom doesn't remember most of it. I have all of these symptoms and clearly remember how psychotic I can really be. Honestly I'm genuinely scared that I could have this considering all that has happened to me.
1:50 "So he has an extra Y chromosome, that's the criminal gene." Stuff like this is how you know shows like CSI aren't great sources of scientifically accurate information. (Since... chromosomes aren't genes; genes are segments of DNA that exist on chromosomes. So even if XYY individuals were more violent or more likely to be criminals, that statement still wouldn't be quite right, lol.)
Wait did they just say 6 feet was average? Or was that the average heights of the tall guys they tested? Cause no way in hell is 6 foot not above average by quiet a bit..
its about average for males in places that arn't asian, famished, or disgustingly obese
you can google it, 6ft is definitely above average
There's a very high correlation between violence, aggresion, and y chromosomes across species.
Are there any actual studies on this? Does it effect health in any way?
where does it come from?
Does it carry extra information?
This is really interesting. I clearly remember being taught this as true in my first year of high school in my science class. Also, the reverse saying that XXX meant super female, being extra emotional etc.
Question:
How does a man get two Y chromosomes? I thought he gets a sex gene from each parent respectively. His mother has to be XX and his dad has to be XY. Is it because the extra Y is a mutated X from his mother or father?
It would be great if someone could explain this. Thanks!
+airyballoon When sperm (and eggs) are made chromosomes line up in pairs. One of each pair is pulled to opposite sides (So an X is in one new cell and a Y in the other). Then (in each of the two new cells) the chromosomes line up in single file and half the 'X' or 'Y' is pulled one way, the half the other way. So you should end up with 4 cells with equal amounts of DNA in each (two with X two with Y). However, sometimes the chromosomes don't split equally and you end up with 22 chromosomes in one cell and 24 in the other. This can lead to things like Down's Syndrome etc but if it's the XY chromosomes that do this you can end up with XXY or XYY.
