    I remember when beginning to play 40 years ago, all of us north of single digit handicap were playing chunky Pings, Clevelands, thick topline Callaways, etc. Very few were obsessing over looks or even feel. We were all having fun, lugging around bruised clubs in grass stained bags.

    Mark is amongst my got to online reviews. What he says matches up with my experience. On my third set of Cleveland irons. TA5's, CG16's last year's Launcher XL's. Spent years trying to gap wedges, went all Cleveland about a decade ago. Now carry CBX Zipcore 46*, 50*, 54* a more solid feel. 58* RTX ZipCore for hard wet sand. The price value cannot be beat. In my old age, 73, have gone to ReCoil graphite shafts. Very low dispersion. Get fitted or know your swing better than the fitters, plenty of YourTube reviews to see pros and cons. Remember most of thou guys are swinging 10 to 40 mph than you and consistently good strikes.

    Nice… The sole looks big, but the back kind of reminds me of some older cavity backs designs. I mean, if it works then it works!!! Great review Mark! I’m all on board with the discussion around pricing for equipment. If golf is to be more accessible for more people then the entry point has to be reasonable for a larger potential customer base…which is why I play a Snell golf ball instead of a Pro V1. Personally, I’m a used club kind of guy and I think there are bargains to be had. That being said, the new club category is there for a reason and for someone new getting newly into it or someone who just wants some casual play I can see the investment worth it. Lower price points can’t be ignored by brands…which is why Costco has clubs now.

    I have last year’s XL irons and CBX wedges. They are just drop it and whack it clubs. They’re not as pretty or as nice feeling as my old AP2s or blades, but given I don’t practice as much as I used to or swing as fast, they get the job done and I don’t really get the crazy distance issues I expected. I actually end up pin high more often than ever which as a 5 hcp is critical to shoot anywhere near my hcp.

    Just bought two new sets of the Cleveland UHX irons. Love them! Although I did give a set to my father and one set to my son. The UHX are awesome and the price new in the US was down to $400. In a couple years I'll buy these for that same $400. That's a deal!

      I bought 3 sets of UHX. One for my wife, one for my son, and one for me. I also have the Srixon ZX7, combo with the ZX4. Each has different wedges starting at 49 Edison for me (similar V sole), 50 Cleveland for my wife, and Bettinardi for my son. We then have other wedges too. The bottom of the bag with the clubs strong creates some gapping challenges. Now we all go out together and can't blame the clubs!

    I've been fitted several times in my life and know very well what my specs need to be for irons at least. I say that because I refuse to pay what the big brands are charging nowadays and instead go the direct to consumer route (knowing your specs and requirements helps a lot). I recently purchased a set from Takomo with as close to custom as I could get using my specs from previous fittings and absolutely LOVE my 101T irons. $650 delivered with my choice of specs is nearly impossible to beat. Bottom line is, you can get great clubs for a lot cheaper than what Callaway, TM, Titleist, etc. are charging.

  • @geoffbaker700
    @geoffbaker700 6 місяців тому +4

    The biggest issue for me is that when I started (34 years ago) irons came in sets of 9. Now they are in sets of 6 so you get half as many clubs for 4-5 times the price so that's something like 8-10 times more expensive and I don't think many people will have seen wages increase that much even in 34 years! I've only had 3 sets of irons in that time. Even DTC clubs seem pretty expensive to me. The only way I'm buying a set of irons is a discontinued model that's at least 50% off its original retail price or possibly used but then some of the prices of used clubs are probably worse than new!

    • @jonq8714
      @jonq8714 6 місяців тому

      I'm a 8hcp and I only carry 4 irons in my bag (6i, 8i, pw, gw).

    • @geoffbaker700
      @geoffbaker700 6 місяців тому +2

      If I have to carry for some reason then I would usually only bother with half a set so probably 4 irons in that and I would think many golfers might benefit from having fewer clubs but the price of clubs is now beyond ridiculous. Green fees are also getting to be a joke. A modest set of six irons even from a DTC brand will be £500 at least. Add in a hybrid or fairway wood, driver and putter even from one of the cheaper brands and you will be talking £1000 for maybe 10 clubs and then a bag can easily set you back 200 more. Throw in a pair of golf shoes, balls etc and it quickly adds up. I don't think golf could really ever be classed as cheap but compared to now it was much more affordable when I started.

  • @peterpallotta2828
    @peterpallotta2828 6 місяців тому +4

    Thanks for this, Mark -- and for having a six iron as the longest iron in your bag (which, given your skill-level, clearly tells me that I have no business having anything lower-lofted in my own bag!) I wish Cleveland much success with these, if only for the principle of thing -- prices have gotten completely out of hand. (It's affecting the used-club market too.) To me, these Zipcore XLs remind me most of the Ping 430s; they go as long/longer, but it's hard to tell from the video, because you're a good ball striker, whether they have the same kind of shovel-like forgiveness as the usual G-series Ping iron. Do they?

    • @firstname2072
      @firstname2072 6 місяців тому +1

      It depends it’s person specific. I for the life of me cannot hit a hybrid but pure my 3 iron high. Mark is a much better player than me but his style doesn’t suit mine and that’s fine. I also play a 2 iron instead of a 3 wood at the minute because it’s like a bullet and my course is very windy.

    here ya go, take a good set of clubs from 1985 and play a full 18 hole course, take a set from 1995 play that set , take a set from 2005 play those, and lastly a set from 2015, play the same course and what is YOUR SCORE.... IF you are around the same score give or take 2 to 3 strokes i would say thats great, for the average player what does it matter the set of clubs......will you take that challenge

    I currently game FG Tour irons from 2009. I always wanted something with a bit of help. Some of Wilson Staffs later irons in the same category had some tungsten weighing in the toe to stretch the forgiveness out a bit. I think the D9 Forged are the first club I've considered in this sortve category. My only concern is the rest of the bag on either end might need changed too if my distances create a gap at the bottom and a traffic jam at the top. Still nice to see companies making stuff like this

    Big name clubs are expensive because many people are willing to buy them. And that's ok. I use a TaylorMade Burner from I think 2007 and I like it a lot. At this point I almost think it is better than the Stealth 2. If I ever buy brand new clubs they will be DTC.

    A couple of years ago I got new clubs. I previously, in between, I had Tommy Armour 845’s. Loved them and 3 or 4 years ago my wife went with to get new clubs. I said at the time, I didn’t want expensive clubs. So I ended up with $1,300 Clubs. Now, I have had a stroke and out of the sport. I still say the 845 was a club just as good if not better than the expensive clubs.
    Exact words I used with my wife. I wanted 845s and ended up with $1300 clubs. I had a set when they first came out. I traded them for a newer set of 845s and they were no match for the originals. I learned if you get a set you can hit and enjoy the game new clubs may ruin the enjoyment. By the way Dick’s has owned the right to control 845s for the last several years and they have really screwed up the clubs.

    So as of five years ago I will never buy a new set of irons or anything other than wedges again. The prices are asinine as the clubs are built of unobtanium. You can buy a like new two year old set for less than half the price which is what I do. While most are on the G435 iam hitting G410s just as far and still scoring just as well. Driver for me is the 2017 Callaway Epic pre flash which I still feel is their best ever driver. My entire bag of sticks was under 800 to include wedges and putter. I'm done with the pretentious brand envy and about affordable results

    The cost of irons is a strange one. I remember buying a set of Mizuno MP32 irons back in 2004 and they cost around £700
    So with inflation that’s around £1200 give or take a few quid.
    So yes they are expensive for sure but are they really that much more than what we would expect?

      Inflation I guess is not the only metric people are measuring on. Cost of living has moved at a different pace but it is maybe unfair to blame the manufacturers for this.

      100% true. Too many simply go for the latest TaylorMade or Callaway drivers because the "pros" use them. Those clubs the pros use are custom designed to their swing. I remember reading when Tiger went to the Nike driver - from his Titleist driver. The story was he gave Nike his TITLEIST driver and told them make the Nike driver EXACTLY like the Titleist driver - stick a Nike logo on the Titleist driver, he didn't care. In the end, the off-the-shelf Nike drivers people would flock to - because it was "Tiger Woods driver" - would be NOTHING like Tiger's Nike driver

    Large iron heads may be more forgiving, but I still prefer the more petite ones. The big, blocky ones are more problematic, hitting the ground first or simultaneous with the club. Lofts are too strong. Most game improvement clubs are.

    I do get fed up when every reviewer calls the very slow evolution of a product as technology! Your GC quad is technology. Also when the average golfers swing is 15 mph slower than yours the “evolution” becomes less impressive. I can use a set of 20 year old Progens equally as well as my Cobra Forged Tech irons.

      I played TM burner for 10 years before I got fitted for cobra forged Tec. It made major improvements in my game. I can control ball flight and shape and heel/toe misses only loses about 5-7 yards. I think the issue is more about fitting than the iron itself.

    I’m always curious as to how these strong lofted clubs work with lower swing speeds. Do they still ‘work’ relative to speed or can people struggle to get into the clubs full potential which is low CG and high launch ? Mizuno brought out a weaker lofted version of their game improvement clubs last year for this reason so wondering why other manufacturers don’t?

      Strong loft irons at slower swing speeds = increased distances, but decreased landing angles, which means the so called ‘scoring irons’ don’t stop/wont stop on the greens. See Exocet! Forget the numbers on the bottom and look at the lofts. Most of these game improvement 7i’s are actually 5i’s with shorter shafts.😏

    • @FF04RDF
      @FF04RDF 6 місяців тому

      @@VonTwinzigthanks …. I understand what loft is. My question that I think you’ve answered was about launch in that to get the optimal height / decent angle and therefore stopping power, you need to generate a decent amount of speed through the ball. I think players with slower swings are getting conned into buying these types of clubs.

    • @VonTwinzig
      @VonTwinzig 6 місяців тому

      @@FF04RDF 100% agree. I would love for one of the golf UA-camrs to make an honest review or even an overview. So, take a player with a slower swing speed looking for some extra distance, get them to try out some of these strong lofted ‘game improvement’ clubs and see what their landing angles are. I’ll wager they’re below 40deg with a 7 iron.

I have not spent over 350 for used irons, and 175 for a used driver.
