I actually own the Zoom H4n Pro, and the Tascam DR100 MKII and they're both disappointing. The Zoom H4n I just plain don't like the XLR pres at all and the 3.5mm is garbage.
The Tascam DR100 MKII has far worse XLR pres, no 3.5mm mic in, but it does have a 3.5mm line in. So I take an out channel from my mixer and run it into the 3.5mm in on my Tascam to bypass the pres on the Tascam. The Zoom H4n Pro is just used to connect my 100% analogue mixer to my PC, which is worthless, because I don't like the way the audio sounds after running it through the Zoom H4n Pro.
And that's really one of the most difficult things about audio. If you don't have a chance to actually try equipment out for a good couple hours yourself it's REALLY hard to know if it's really going to be something you want. So, in hindsight, I'd probably rather buy something like a Heath and Allen ZED8, at least in theory, so I can connect straight from one set of XLR pres to the PC via USB, and if for whatever reason I don't like it or the USB has any issues, I can still connect the ZED8 to the Tascam and grab the WAV off the recorders SD card. It also makes for a backup, for people that want that.
But that's just in theory because, again, I can only base that off of UA-cam reviews and blog posts. I haven't actually used a Health and Allen mixer yet. It could be the Yamaha is just as good.. I really don't know.. it tends to be all very non specific, not at all empirical, just random opinions. And I do get that. Not trying to knock Kevin, myself, or anyone else that reviews this stuff.. It's just the harsh reality. You CANNOT know what you will really like and what will really work for you until you have a certain level of knowledge and experience. There's really no way around that if you're really particular about your sound.
Thanks for the comment Dan.
You make a very good point. I look at many video reviews before buying any equipment so that I make sure I buy the right products; however there's always things you figure out yourself later that wasn't covered in reviews.
I've read positive reviews about the H4N Pro, though many have said the H5 is a better buy.
I would have liked a 3.5mm input, bit perhaps using XLR to 3.5mm ensures better quality.
Hopefully people will find my videos useful, but I encourage everyone to watch multiple reviews to see if something is suitable.
Lovely presentation, besides the hardware, what a friendly presence.
Thats the scots for you - a friendly nation
Hi Kevin, those 2 XLR inputs are actually combo XLR / 1/4" mono inputs, you can just stick a 1/4" mono plug in the hole in the middle of the input. No need for that big XLR adapter. You still need that 3.5mm - 1/4" adapter but that's a lot smaller.
The adapter provides plugin power to lav mics that require it (such as the Sennheiser mic I have). Standard TRS inputs don't provide this.
Looks like you really love the U-24, Kev. When's the stag weekend?! 😄
haha I love it...but I don't wanna give it half my stuff haha ;)
Nice review. I'm looking at a unit to record audio and midi into an iPad Pro. I was looking at the u-44. The USB charging option is cool. I've got an H4n but there's no midi. Cheers from a fellow Scot. 😀👍
Hey, Kevin! You mentioned that there's no 3.5 mm microphone input. On zoom u-22 there's the "line in" input there, will it work with microphones?
I don't have the U22, but if it has a 3.5mm online in port, mics should work with it.
Thanks for the review! What platforms does it work on (Windows / Mac, Android / iPhone)? What platforms have you (or anyone) tested it on?
It will work with anything. I've used it with windows and my android tablet and phone.
@@KevinMuldoon Great, thanks!
Have you run it on Windows 10? Cheers mate
@@markysherps6711 Not yet, sorry.
Hi, great video. Is possible connect a Ipad to Input1 and digital piano on Input2? Thank you.
So the iPad would be an input?
Yeah, it can be done, but you would need an accessory that outputs a signal from the iPad to XLR or something like that.
So this video was recorded on your phone with the interface acting as your sound board? Im looking for something to capture my jamming an allowing me to use the video camera at the same time - the u-24 will allow this?
Yes it cna work with phones and tablets. I've did a few live streams with it.
Kevin Muldoon awesome! Thank you!
good video
Hello. Would you know If this interface can drive a Shure SM58 mic well? My purpose is podcasts and voiceover and the Shure is a gain hungry mic to some extent. Many thanks!!
I used to have the Shure SM58 myself (well, technically, it was a loaner from my brother).
I think I did try the SM58 with this, but I can't recall the outcome. I'd be inclined to use a Fethead for extra again if I was using it again.
Question(s): Because you can use this outside on-the-go, do you need a memory card to store the files in? How does the U-24 store audio when used on batteries? Thanks
No, this is designed specifically for connecting to another device such as a laptop or phone or tablet. It doesn't have any storage functionality.
SD card or internal storage.
Yeah it simply acts like an audio interface. It's not like the Zoom H6 etc.
Why XLR to 3,5mm and not 6,3mm to 3,5mm?? It takes 6,3mm!!!
OK, today I bought U-24 too - Everything I record via Zoom on iPad, I hear only on LEFT or Right channel - Is any way to set this device to record "mono" in my GarageBand or acapella? or it depends only on APP :-/
If you're not recording live, you can simply duplicate one channel to the other in your video editor.
You should still be able to hear mono mics in both channels though. I've used my mono mics with my tablet and laptops and not had any problems. I don't have an iPad so not sure exactly how you have yours setup.
@@KevinMuldoon You are right! As I see, some apps on ipad has possibility to choice between mono mix and stereo (like garageband), but not all apps has possibility to choice :-/ In fact - Zoom sounds really good
@@bartmuz I suspect there will be some alternative apps that will resolve the issue 😁
What's the name for the microgone's adapter? Great video
The Rode VXLR+.
@@KevinMuldoon thanks!
Hi, could you tell me please, Can I record in android phone along with zoom u 24? I am having Asus zenfone.
Yes it is possible. I used it many times with my phone.
I'm planning to buy my first audio interface and I'm torn between this Zoom U-24 and the Focusrite 2i2 (2nd Gen). I like Zoom's features but based on the things I've read online, a lot of people prefers the Focusrite more. Which one would you recommend though?
I've never used the focusrite, but my guess is it's slightly better. But there's not much in it.
The Zoom U24 is portable and can be used with batteries.
@@KevinMuldoon How about the Mackie Onyx Artist? What are your thoughts about it? It's not that popular here in my country but I've heard it's built like a tank. I really want something that's durable.
I haven't tested it. I've only bought three or four audio interfaces in my life so those are the ones I know well.
Hello there. Do you think it's possible to connect the Zoom U24 to a camera? I'd like to connect it to a Sony a6400 and use it with a Shure SM58, recording straight to camera. Many thanks!!
It should be possible. You just need to feed the zoom in as and audio input. Though there are better solutions for using an XLR mic with cameras.
English is not my first language and luckilly i've been watching kmac videos 😄.
I got this yesterday. But it slighty delayed. How to adjust the latency?
I've never had any issues with latency. It's always been responsive.
Does the direct to phone audio capture work with video capturing apps? Or just the stock video app?
I use it with open camera. It will work with some video apps, but not all. Depends on whether the app works with external mics.
@@KevinMuldoon thanks!
Do I need to download software to record sound? I had one in few months but I dont know how to connect it. Thank you!
Yeah I recommend downloading the official drivers.
Thanks for the review. Is the high headphone output impedance (30 ohm) a noticeable problem? Do you need a high impedance headphone? Would the headphone sound bad if my head phone is also around 30 ohms?
I was never impressed with the headphone quality, but I wasn't disappointed either. I was always able to get good volume without pushing the dials to 10 and there was very little noise.
@@KevinMuldoon Thanks for your reply. I'm also looking at the m-audio air 192|6 for my first interface. Would you advice this older u24? I'm not real sure what id need the extra output on u24 either.
@@zaqwe7235 I haven't used that one.
Two XLR inputs were useful for me as I used it for interviewing friends etc.
Would you need an extra port? Some of the single XLR interfaces are really compact.
@@KevinMuldoon Id like to have an extra xlr input for the same reason you have. But I wonder where youd need the 4 output of the u24. Other than the u24 potability, that seems to be the only fundamental benefit I see over the 192 6,. Thanks
@@KevinMuldoon Thanks again for your help. Another noob question here. Does the interface record the mic CH 1 in the left side only? I heard it's quite common for many Audio interfaces. I know I can hear this video on both sides. Does the u24 automatically record the sound on both L and R of the audio? or you have to do something to it. I want to use it in live streaming situation sometimes. I just wanted to make sure my mic would goes through both ears.
If you are direct monitoring, and use 2 mics; do you hear both mics as mono or do they come out as stereo while direct monitoring?
It's been a while since I've used two mics with this, but I don't recall ever having the feedback as mono. That could be because I have it set as stereo in OBS though.
@Naveen Revoju I've never used it myself. I know only has one XLR input, but other features are missing too. Of course, additional features are only useful if you will actually use them.
Which mic you are using and what is that adaptor to connect mic you used
The adapter is the Rode VXLR+ and I have a Sennheiser me2 lav mic attached to me. 👍
It made me smile that while learning how to get better quality audio from my podcast, I had to slow down the video from my usual 1.25x speed in order to decode your strong Scottish accent 😂. Joking aside, I have been learning what an audio interface is for after buying a Zoom U-22 and trying to get it to work on my PC and hearing the difference. I found that the audio from my AT2100X-USB is MUCH better using an XLR connector with the U-22 vs connecting it directly to the PC vis USB-C. However, even though I’ve set the gain to maximum on my U-22, the audio is quieter than via the USB connection. Not sure why that is. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for the video
In that scenario, you don't have a like for like comparison. One is the audio level from a USB mic, the other is a mix going through a USB audio interface.
You'll have to configure your U-22 so that the audio level is higher. If refer to the manual for that, but remember that you will need to adjust levels on the audio interface and on your computer too. They need to work in harmony.
@@KevinMuldoon Thanks for that advice Kevin, I’ll try that tomorrow, much appreciated 🙏👍
@thebritishindian1 you're welcome👍
What are you saying at about 8min. As an alternative. Transcript says 'Iraq pujol. ' I'm interested in looking at other options in the same price range. Thank you.
Yeah the auto subtitles aren't always good.
I was referring to the Irig Pro Duo.

Thank you for your video, I have got a question. Can I do videos from my android phone but using the audio of my two external microphones? Does it takes two mics simultaeonusly as stereo or mono? I would need it to record my guitar
Yes you can. Both mics can be used at the same time.
The Android phone would receive it as one stereo signal. The audio wouldn't be split into channels.
@@KevinMuldoon Great!!! Thank you very much :)
@@KevinMuldoon sorry but I see just one usb port..so if I connect it to the computer to use it as an audio interface and get the recording, how can I plug my phone to get the video done (with the audio of external mics) at the same time?
Use micro B for DC in for power. Then use an adapter for your phone such as USB A to Type C.
You can see me doing this around the 13 minute mark at ua-cam.com/video/EXuM06CaAGk/v-deo.html
@@KevinMuldoon I saw you did it in your video but I am new to all these things and I still don't get it completely.. 1 I put the standard usb cable from the usb port to the pc (to get them then connected so I can make recording), or maybe once the phone is plugged in I manage the recording directly from my phone? 2 I put my external mics into the zoom, 3 I have to connect my phone to the zoom (I need to use only the video functions as you did it in your video), with the usb A to type C cable...but where am I going to plug it? Why I need the micro B for DC in for power..is not enough for power having the zoom connected to the Pc through the standard usb port and cable? I am sorry for all these questions...
Can you do live streaming with this setup on the phone like having one microphone on channel 1 and one guitar on channel 2. How would the output in the live stream be. Would the stereo output be microphone only at Left, then guitar on the Right audio. Or do have any settings in the phone to be made so that the input would be in mono. Thanks man if you can answer my inquiry.
It depends on how you handle it now your recording setup. For example, I have OBS set up to copy the mono signal from my vocal mics so it crosses both channels.
With a phone, it should hopefully do the same with your recording app.
My plan is to use it directly to livestream to facebook live. Have you tried going to fb live while using this setup? Thank you so much for your reply 👍👍
I never did Facebook, but I did love stream to UA-cam a few times so I know it's possible.
I gave this to my friend two months ago as I wasn't using it.
Thanks man! I hope you can make more videos and be able to continue helping others. You are a great help. 👍👍
You're welcome. Glad I could help.
There is possible use it for in ear monitoring?
Yes. I never had any problems with latency.
Thought i would try one for my ipad pro (2016) using the CCK adapter, its recognised by the ipad but i cant hear playback of anything via the headphones on the U44. I,m assuming it should work. Got no problem with input (recorded guitar ok.. in fact the preamp adds some grit)
Its unlikely to be a faulty unit and more user error. Simply put, i cant even listen to a youtube track, i just get a distorted pulse in the U44 Headphones whenever i play anything on the ipad.
Ive messed with settings on both ipad and U44 to no avail
Someone school me on this please. I,d like to keep it.
I do have another (apple) CCK adapter on the way, just to eliminate any cable issue.
I'm not sure what would cause that. It worked fine with my android tablet.
The fact it's recording ok is puzzling.
@@KevinMuldoon Hi Kevin, thanks for your swift reply. I.m convincing myself that i,m doing something wrong or don`t fully understand U44 function/signal chain. Just tried it on my mac mini. U44 driver appears in Audio set up and "sound icon" in the preferences. Mac mini`s volume is now frozen (good) but no sound from U44 headphones (messed with dials) Mac Audio set up has no controls available for the driver (as expected though)
So, can you just confirm that i should be able to use the U44 as a straight ahead headphone device? without input just the headhones plugged in and connected via usb self power from Mac mini…cheers
Yeah you should be able to use it just for headphones. When I connect it all up I can record and listen using headphones too.
It is supposed to work with Mac, but I don't have one to rest.
@@KevinMuldoon Well after some thought i decided i would try the USB cable it came with and Bingo..got it working. I know i,m dumb, another one those 'assumption' scenarios. I had just picked up the nearest USB printer cable i had on hand and used that. So not all cables are the same. I was reading earlier about some usb protocol and looks like my printer cable was not applicable. Lesson learned. Happy now :)
Next step the ipad. At least i know the unit is working. I have a nice stereo Sony ecm ms-957 i want to get using, bought a 5 pin stereo xlr to two mono xlr to use with the U44.Thanks a lot for communicating.
Ahh I had assumed you were using the provided cable.
Yeah all cables aren't creating cable. Even with type c cables you will get ones that can deliver significant power and data and others that cannot.
That's good you've got it working now. 😎
Hi, may I know how to use this Zoom U24 if I wanted to connect it with my Android phone as I would like to do a video recording with the phone just like what you did. (What else should I buy? Eg. Cable? ) please help :)
I used a type c adapter in order to connect the zoom to my phone.
You mean usb type-c to 3.5mm audio jack adapter?
No.
I explain in the video around the one minute mark. It's a type a to type c converter cable.
Because I can't see how you connect the cable from your phone to Zoom U24. I am not sure what specific cable should I buy in order to connect both device. Would you mind be more specific so that I can buy it online? Thanks Kevin :)
@@miffyboy75 Something like this will work
amzn.to/2Zx24ps
This is the same brand I bought, but the two pack I bought is a small cable rather than one little converter. They don't seem to sell that type of cable now, but this should do the job too.
You're effectively connecting the zoom the same way you would to your laptop. You use the same type A cable, but you just need to convert it for your phone.
If you had an iPhone, you would probably need a type A to lightning converter.
What use are the rca output if you have TRS main outs ?
My guess is compatibility with other devices.
@@KevinMuldoon sure - i just notice that many give you plenty of unbalanced outputs RCA and am wondering how best to use them . I need u24 or u44 for ipad looping application
Can you make phone interviews with this device
What do you mean by phone interviews? Do you mean feeding the audio from your phone into the audio interface?
It's not something I've did myself, but it should be possible with the right cable.
This gadget can i use external audio source to my Samsung a70
Yes it is possible.
And how to connect my mp3 to use minus one
I'm not sure what you mean. Can you clarify what you are trying to do.
Hello, is possible use with an Android smartphone for do Facebook Lives, etc? thanks :)
Yes. I did some live streams with it.
@@KevinMuldoon Oh, really? I have the Roland Go mixer pro, but want another options and found this one, but in the ZOOM description tells only PC and IOS...
@@KevinMuldoon do you have this any stream online for listen the quality? thanks a lot for your help
I used it with my android phone and via my laptop too.
I'm going back years so I'd have to search for it. Quality obviously depends on the mic you're using, but I was impressed. No complaints.
can you please tell the brand model of your lavalier mic
I use the Sennheiser ME 2 with my audio interfaces sometimes and a cheap smartphone lav from BluSmart for my phone (which works really well).
does it works on amd ryzen?
?
Yes it should work with all CPUs
they guarantee correct operation only on Intel chipsets
Oh I wasn't aware of that. I haven't read of any problems. It works with the phones and tablets I've used and those don't have intel chips.
Thanks just purchased one #BigThings ss
Hope you like it 👍
So you can’t plug a guitar into it without an adapter?!?
A guitar would plug right in
Does it have enough headphone output power, 64 ohms pull with a margin?
I'm not sure about specifics. I've not had any problems with my headphones so I've not looked into the issue.
@@KevinMuldoon What headphones did you use them with, did you have enough volume and at what level ?, approximately, thanks/
I've used a cheap over ear pair from headphones and my v moda over ear headphones. Both using a standard 3.5mm cable via a larger connector.
Why not the H6?
I used to own the Zoom H6. Check my videos about it from years ago.
As far as why not the H6. I simply don't need it 99% of the time. I don't need a recorder. I only need an audio interface. There's no point me paying 6 times the price for functionality I don't need.
Classic UA-cam response. Did you even watch the video to understand the difference and why he bought it?
Scottish?
Yes 👍
Well spotted Sherlock. 😆😆😆
I hate my Zoom U24!
Great….
If you had said ‘why’.
Without such it’s much like some people…. Useless fluff.
Can one record in to a Zoom H2n from a U44 / H5
The Zoom H2N has a line out port so it is possible.
