    Love it. Mellotron strings to me are more like the ghosts of real strings which is really cool.

    If it's a tape based unit, then why is it on a stand?
    The 4000D is a digital unit, if it keeps the original Mellotron sound, us roadies are gonna love it. Finally a Mellotron that will actually fit in a keyboard case and can be carried by a single person.

    The original Mellotron was invented by Streetly Electronics in Manchester, England in 1962, and went on the market in 1963. Moody Blues keyboardist Mike Pinder fell into his role as keyboardist in the Moodies due to his being a pianist and a salesman for Streetly Electronics in 1963-64 when the Moodies first got together as the M&B Five in April-May 1964.

    @RothHandle The Mellotron was the first "sampler" - it plays recordings of other instruments. It has it's own unique sound due to the magnetic replay heads adding their own characteristics to the sound. It also adds all sorts or whirring and clunking noises which most people can live without! The 4000D has all the sounds most sane people would want and which the audience hears - QED

    I dont find it pointless. I would rather have this onstage than a laptop/controller/etc etc. Same reason I gig out with a hammond XK1 instead of any virtual bullshit. The closer it looks, feels, and sounds to the real thing the better. That matters to some people. It's not like I'm not familiar with the mtron and chamberlain vst libraries. They sound great. Of any replica of mellotron this is what I'd want above all others, including the memotron.

    Excellent set up. Knew it was a matter of time where they'd digitize all of the old Mellotron sounds and make it all easily accessible and far more reliable than the tape units. Only negative is that I wish the keyboard was at least an octave longer.

      But notice, the unit has MIDI, so a bigger keyboard could be hooked up as a controller. Since this is base on the original keyboard, I wonder if any notes would sound out of the original range?

    I'm an analog musician all the way, love all that is analog. Digital is finally in a position to recreate analog with all of it's idiosyncrasies and make them random enough to please even me, but of course the real thing sitting there is beyond duplication. We should at least be glad that the speakers and our ears are still analog.
    I look for someone to start experimenting with new types of microelectromechanical tone generation that can bridge the in/out gap between analog & digital. See me

  • @VideoMask93
    @VideoMask93 11 років тому

    Part of it's that it was on tapes, which decay to a degree. It creates a really unique effect. At least, on the analog mellotrons, the M-4000 D is digital. Its digital nature might be a part of it.

  • @UMAMIMAMU
    @UMAMIMAMU 12 років тому

    @GangstaGTV This is one of the new Mellotrons being produced currently by the Streetly Electronics Co with almost the exact same components as were used during the original production run. So no,it's not digital, this still uses magnetic tape. I forget what the web site is for them but I'm pretty sure they're made on a custom order basis. I'll put it this way, they're so expensive they don't even tell you how much they are on the web-site.

    The original Mellotrons had the same range, so I guess they are trying to make it like that. And also the tape samples may only exist in that range. But who knows. That would be great to have a full keyboard mellotron

    @wildmanatm You are talking rubbish. Whilst I think Streetly have done wonders to keep the Mellotron alive, this is a fantastic digital version. Just received mine and it send tingles down the spine in the same way as the original. Keyboard is authentic, sounds are authentic without all the unnecessary mechanical gear that invarably goes wrong. Brilliant.

    Mellotron als Rompler...bin ich ja eigentlich gar nicht für zu haben. Der Originalsound bestach ja gerade dadurch, dass das alles mechanisch war und seine kleinen "Schmutzeffekte" hatte. ABER die Vibes sind schweinegeil, zugegegben. ;) Ebenso die Tibia Organ.

Das Mellotron ist sehr beliebt im Progressive Rock. Man benutzt es eigentlich nur für die Chöre, Streicher und Bläser. Die Piano und Gitarren Sounds die im Video gezeigt wurden, sind total unnötig.

    Looks like the M-4000D has 37 keys, starting with F. The vintage models have only 35 keys starting with G - that is very likely because the lowest note on a violin is a G.
    What the heck do I want with two notes which don't exist on a real violin? For that kind of stuff I get myself a 61 key synth and vsti instruments. For a hardware based instrument I would like accuracy. Please.

    There is a actual Mellotron/Novatron 4000 with tapes, a great instrument that came out well before this device that capitalizes on the product name mellotron 4000. Why such a smarmy thing I will never understand. In the US it is a crime to restrain trade and that is what they have done.
