All the Sounds of the Mellotron M4000D Mini: No Talking, No Effects

- Using a Mellotron M4000D mini, I run through all 100 sounds that are included with the Mellotron M4000D family of instruments at a pretty quick pace. Just the sounds with no talking. No effects or post-processing were used; there might be a few spots where the sound is slightly distorted due to not using a compressor. The sounds were recorded in Garageband on an iPad Pro from the Mellotron's mono analog output into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 interface.
Here's a list of the sounds in the order they were played if you can't read what's on the Mellotron's right screen and you want to follow along:

Yea there isn’t 1 sound i heard that I wouldn’t use. It causes me physical anguish how badly i desire this beautiful instrument.
I hope you can find a way to get one. Thanks for watching!
Me too bro. me too. After watching this I’m gonna work for weeks straight till I can get
Dude, it’s not that expensive. Less than $2K work a month, or two or 3. Make some small sacrifices and step your your savings, then go buy it.
That mellotron strings sound is just pure magic. I love it so much.
It’s the only sound I need. Thanks for watching!
For an instrument that doesn't really claim to be a recreation or otherwise, it's actually VERY close with its samples. Plus who could say no to that insanely lovely on switch
It’s got enough of the vibe
I can only afford the lovely on switch. 😂
Yeah, it's an incredible instrument. So many bands and musicians worked with it in the great seventies. It is a pre moog or pre synth. I love this outstanding sound so much.
a perfect video, in depth, no extra effects.. thank you so much! Mine's coming hopefully tomorrow, can't wait :)
Glad you found it helpful. I just got the Mellotron a few weeks ago and it is amazing. Good luck with the new gear!

when you first played the brass, my first thought was "oh, that must've been what they used in pictures of a city", and as though reading my mind you began to play it! great video, i appreciate this rundown
Some of the Mellotron sounds just make me want to play Crimson tunes. Love the brass sounds. Thanks for watching!
The most interesting thing in this video, for me, is that everytime you change the 'sounds' on this beautiful Mellotron i expect some really sick and deep Progressive Rock to explode in my face all of a sudden... hahaha Superb video, man! Loved it!
I wish I could play like that. I tried a few King Crimson licks here and there. Thanks for watching!
2:20 THE ONE AND ONLY BILLY SHEARS!!
thanks greatly. exactly what i was looking for. youtube needs more creators like you :)
Thanks! Glad it was helpful.
Beautiful, thank you for keeping it about the sounds. Grateful, subscribed. This thing sounds amazing.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! It is such a great instrument.
I was trying to remember when I made this comment then I noticed the username. 😆
John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin had said in an interview the Mellotron would get hot and you never knew what sound was going to come out of it 😊
"Tuning a Mellotron doesn't."
- Robert Fripp
Ex Mellotron M4000D owner here and this is my honest opinion : as a Beatles and Oasis fan, it was a great pleasure to have this keyboard at home, playing something that says Mellotron on front and panel was a privilege for sure. And this is a great video that transmits that feeling for sure
However, that was it, this is a rompler, a sampler player, well constructed of course, but there is no way spending USD $2,000 when you get the same on the Ipad app
I finally sold it to get a second hand Nord Electro 5D, which also has original Mellotron / Chamberlain samples, and since it has all kind of stereo effects and ADSR, you can have much more sound capabilities.
I’ve had it a couple of years and still love it. But yeah there are definitely other options. Thanks for watching!
@@synthblock I've had my Mellotron M4000D since 2017. I have it hooked up through two fender FX amps along with the Mellotron sound cards II, III, & IV. I can make my Mellotron sing to musical angels. It's my primary keyboard and go to for awesome playing. I don't think @carloasis1495 knew how to fully expand the capabilities of the instrument. The M4000D is three octaves but combined with the Hi/Low function it double that to 6 octaves........added, the pitch ± knob raises and lowers another 5th giving an additional range of 7 octaves. An additional plus having a shortened keyboard with the limited 37 keys will help you master reverse chords. Every keyboardist has their favorite instrument..........the Mellotron is my favorite. I have a 1980's Yamaha synthesizer, a 1963 Wurlitzer organ, a1980 Roland electric piano and an 1858 Steinway & Sons piano. The Mellotron M4000D fantastically wipes all of them out hands down. No matter your preference, just keep rocking on.
@@stargate1555 Great post! The Mellotron is such an expressive instrument.
Please what's the name of iPad app for Mellotron?
Ok, as much as I would love to have one of these, I thought much the same thing, especially when it comes to my Nord 6D.
While I totally enjoy the different voices of the Mellotron, my favorites used in actual recorded and live performances have always been the choirs. They can add so much emotion! Thank you for the demo! 👍👍👍
I hear you. The choirs are all so deep. The modern Mellotron would still be worth it to me if it only had choirs, strings, and flutes. Oh, and some brass. Thanks for watching!
@@synthblock You are likely already familiar with it, but I highly recommend the song “Entangled” on Genesis’ “A Trick of the Tail” album. The last 2:15 of it has awesome Mellotron voices. Thank you for replying! 👍👍👍
@@Primus54 Tony Banks was so good on the Mellotron.

Wonderful video...I love the Mellotron. I recently got a Kurzweil K2700 and am loving the Tron sounds it has. But I still really want to get one of these...it's just so cool.
It’s definitely a fun instrument. Thanks for watching!
thank you for this. all i wanted was to hear the sounds of the instrument. this was great.

I don't know why, but I love the mellotron most of all.
It is such a great instrument. Thanks for watching!
6:30 That choir sound is audible on the Neil Diamond album *Love at the Greek* during the “Jonathan Livingston Seagull Medley”. There may be more notable instances of it being played on a pop record, but that’s my favorite.

King Crimson around 8min nice

There are actually quite a few missing sounds that only the original company has like Gothic, Cyndee Lee Rule's Viola, Louise Davis' Cello, Steve Hackett's Sustained Guitar, Adrien Belew's Sustained Guitar, Ian McDonald's Classical Flute, Chamber Woodwinds, Angry Strings, Sad Strings, New String Section and a couple of dozen others.
Yeah, definitely missing a lot of the custom tapes. They have some on the additional cards. Interestingly, the Mellowsound Mellotron app from Fingerlab has Sad Strings.
I wanted to hear the flutes and yes you delivered with Strawberry Fields. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Yummy sounds. Expensive Gear... Sampler 😆
Yeah, I agree. But it feels and sounds close enough. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic tool! Congrats. I have a question: is there a pedal available to make the notes and chords sound longer?
You can use a sustain pedal but notes/chords held will only sustain/sound for about 8 seconds just like the original Mellotron. Thanks for watching!
@@synthblock yes I thought so. With Arturia's Mellotron V I experienced the same 'annoyance' (if I may say so). But such a real Mellotron is really beautiful. Really beautiful sounds. Enjoy it.
I loved how at 13:19 you used the Harp Long Arpeggios, and that's a perfect way to end a demonstration video!
Do you happen to have the other sound cards?
Thank you! I don’t have any of the other sound cards but would like to get Sound Card 02 or 03 at some point. Thanks for watching.
I love the harp sound but it's difficult to play along with other sounds because the arpeggiated notes are not selectable.
@@gevansmd1 Well I noticed on the Mellotron Sound Card 03, there’s also a “Harp Rolls” where each note has a strummed chord, and “Harp Solo” that has single notes.
@@AriannaCunningham of the sound arpeggiates the notes I'm holding down that's great. The built-in harp just does what it wants.
Good job 😎👍 I did similar M4000D and expansion card sound demos on my channel but I did have some reverb on. 🤭
Thanks! Your video is a great demo. Nice to hear what's on the expansion card.
mkii vibraphone my beloved ❤
the sounds remind me of 60's and 70's movie soundtracks.
So true. I think there’s even a site out there called Planet Mellotron that lists soundtracks that use the Mellotron. Thanks for watching!
I would have been an honor to be sampled into here!

Anybody get Rugrats vibes from a lot of these patches? I know Mark Motherspaugh is a synth nerd but I don't recall him mentioning using a Mellotron for the soundtrack
4:37 this part reminds me of Ladies of the Road by King Crimson
i want a mellotron so bad 😭
I hear you. It took awhile to save up the money. Thanks for watching!
2:21 strawberry fields forever
always wondered, is there anyway to change the enveloppe? (ADSR)
You can set the attack and release time, but it's not per sound.
I would buy this just for the choir sounds
The choir sounds are so haunting.
Is the 8 voice choir just the 4 voice male and female choirs added together? It sounds the most badass, but both the male only and female only have some special charm to them as well
It sounds to me like a combination of both the male and female choirs together. Thanks for watching!
There is some serious Catfood build in!! 😃👌
Thanks for watching!
Hello - does the "Mellotron Micro" have all the same sounds but with just a smaller keyboard ?
Yes, all the same sounds are on the Micro. Thanks for watching!
The Mellotron Micro has 100 non-expandable presets. Smaller keyboard but there is a 3 octave switch that you can access all of the same keys as the Mellotron 4000D (just not laid out at once due to the compact design)
@@dukeviking : so the M4000D (regular size) has the same 100 presets, but can also expand through Mellotron sound cards, exact? Are these sound cards vintage (thus expensive and hard to get!) or sold brand new?
Thanks!
I would buy this for the flute patch alone lol.
It is such a fantastic sound. Thanks for watching!
I wrote this music on a Yamaha in 1987.
Ross used a section of it on Friends. I had more helicopter and racecar sounds🤣
HA!!! Thanks for watching!
A gimme!!!! One of my favorite bands - Black Bonzo - used this! Just listen to Fantasyworld!
I will check them out. Thanks for watching!
What is the sound on your intro from? Is it a digital sound or something like a tank drum? Sounds cool
Hi and thanks for watching! That sound is from Mersenne, a synth app from IceGear. I did a 60 second video using that sound a couple of years ago: ua-cam.com/video/9zBjrPgYML8/v-deo.html
Great demo, can you make your own presets on mellotron?
Unfortunately not , just the original Tron sounds.
Can you hear the tapes run out if you hold the key for too long? Phenomenal video, and tbh i NEED one
Yes, the sounds end after 7-8 seconds depending on the original tape that was sampled. No sustained notes beyond that. Thanks for watching!
Awesome vid. I really like these things, but that price is ouchy! I also have other options though.
Definitely cheaper options out there. Thanks for watching!
This is my favorite Mellotron video ever, all the sample software that i hear sound not so good, which one do you think is the best software or app out there?
Wow, thank you for saying that! I’ve never used Mellotron samples, although I have used Mellowsound by Fingerlab and the Mellotron app (made by the same folks that make the M4000D) on the iPad and they are both good. Thanks for watching!
@@synthblock Hey i was just curious what instrument in specific is the one that is playing as this video starts?
@@ProgPena Mersenne (iPad app from iceGear). Here's a longer version: ua-cam.com/video/9zBjrPgYML8/v-deo.html
Would the rack version be the same?
It has all the features as the others except for the keyboard.
Run your Mellotron through an effects amp with reverb especially with a sustain pedal. Trust me, it's a completely different instrument if you do. That will open up a whole new world for your gem of a Mellotron.
Totally agree. I run it through my bass amp when I’m playing with other people. It’s insane. But yeah, a guitar amp with reverb must sound amazing. I’ll have to try that. Thanks!
Fender makes a few wonderful effects amps with their Champion 10-20-50-100 amps series. Just for grins, run your Mellotron through some guitar effect pedals......I do. My favorite effect guitar pedal is the Metal Zone pedal and the sounds are awesome. Rock on. Peace/love/rockn'roll.
Hey i finally got the Mellotron mini, it turns on but it doesn’t sound anything at all???
Which output are you using? Try hooking up headphones to the headphone jack and see if you get a sound that way. If not I’d contact the dealer you purchased it from as it might be defective.
@@synthblock i needed a speaker lol
@@ProgPena Glad it was an easy fix. Enjoy the Mellotron!
Did the original 1963 version have all 100 sounds the version in the video has?
No. The modern Mellotron comes with samples from various Mellotron models. There’s about 20 sounds from the original MkI. Thanks for watching!
What an instrument. I have a m4000 mini myself and that last key is over sensitive with the aftertouch, did you noticed that as well?
I‘m not noticing any difference between the keys on mine. I do get an increase in volume sometimes when I use a sustain pedal. Thanks for watching!

Is there any place to get all those sounds without buying this instrument?
You can get Mellotron samples from a lot of different companies. Just do a google search on "mellotron samples" and you'll see a bunch of options. Thanks for watching!
In my head 😂
This might be a silly question, but does the Mini require an external speaker, or does it have a speaker built in?
No built-in speakers but there is a headphone jack. Thanks for watching!
@@synthblock nice! Thanks for the reply!
could you plug this into a moog mavis?
According to the Moog Mavis manual, the Fold In input can accept audio but you should verify that means an external device like the Mellotron. Thanks for watching!
@@synthblocki dont have any myself, i was just curious
Huh, the MKII accordion at 4:37 vaguely sounds like the intro melody of Jellyfish's 'The Man I Used To Be'.
I had to go listen to that song, but wow, what a random coincidence!
I think it sounds just as good as the original.
*Come at me, hipsters.*
And it weighs a lot less and is less expensive than the originals.
Not even close.
@@hamstring6792 pretty close with 99 percent of the headaches removed.
@@evankeal It's not a real Mellotron. It's just a computer-based sample player loaded with butchered samples. I can hear the difference. Besides, the claims that real Mellotons are troublesome are based on pure mythology.
@@hamstring6792 wow, so much is wrong with everything in that statement. You missed so much of the English language. To recap, you said sounds nothing alike. I said it's close. I never stated anything that should give you the impression I dont understand this is not the original board. And as far as the comparison to maintaining the tapes and hardware of the original versus this, you are not very in tune with using equipment in general. I also implied I hear a difference when using the term " close". Meaning its different.
11:50 Wonderwall
Does it have a sustain pedal?
You can use a sustain pedal with it but it doesn’t come with a sustain pedal. You have to purchase that separately. Thanks for watching!
The soundtrack to every cheesy movie/tv series from the early 70s - right there!
Thanks for watching!
Very nice, but nothing here a software Mellotron can't equal. Cheers.
Thanks for watching!
I am still debating on whether or not to pull the trigger on this.
I still have no regrets about my purchase if that helps!
I’m there as well... I don’t think any sampler can replicate can come near the quality of the sounds
Do not buy it, is just more stuff in the studio and is already way too expensive, you will not be able to sell it ever for a good price. And you can get those samples anywhere for free.
You can plug into guitar pedals for pure experimentation.
Dear friend. the question is not so much in the quality of the sampling, but in the knowledge of "where" each instrument "moves". A tenor sax has its octave, a marimba its own, a choir, a mandolin, etc etc ...... you can have the best sampler in the world but if the sound you choose, you don't let it play, in the right octave , everything will sound bad. So there are two parameters for playing with sampled sounds. Space and dynamics. Where and how do you use that sound. Always think about how the instrument that produces that sound works.
Marco, all good points. I feel the Mellotron can get close, due to the fact that each individual note is a a separate 8 second recording of someone playing that note so you get differences in pitch, timbre, etc, as well as chair squeaks, microphone hits and more. Yes, I agree that approaching playing the Mellotron like you'd be playing the real instrument helps.
I also think someone shouldn't buy a Mellotron with the intention of getting studio quality recreations of real instruments. The beauty of the Mellotron is its lo-fi nature and how everything sounds a little off.
WOW! Such a versatile instrument; why’d they go out of style? 🎶🎹
It does cover a lot of ground. Thanks for watching!
Because most of its sounds are super harsh and cheesy
@@SoggySandwich80im gonna be the first to ask how a sound from an instrument can be cheesy
They never went out of style. Always been a market for Mellotrons. The originals are just crazy expensive and hard to tour with because of all the fragile tape mechanisms.

@@WycliffStudios I checked it out on internet, I'm Mexican so I found the price on pesos (on Amazon) . But speaking of dollars, it would be almost 2,000 dolars. Of course maybe is more expensive here (México) , because of the import and export price.
$2,000
Why?
dababy
There isn't one sound i heard that I would use. At least, unlike the original, this is small and light enough to throw in the garbage which is where it belongs outside of a free app.
That really made me laugh! Yeah, it’s not for everyone. Thanks for watching anyway.
Mellotron must use real tape or it's not a Mellotron. I'm not sure what you want to call this, but it's not a mellotron. It's really no different than a VST, but perhaps less powerful. Not a good use of hardware. Perhaps it's good for live performances, but I don't see the value of it when there are so many other better alternatives.
This doesn't sound any better than the standard 100 voice digital keyboard, pawn shop variety.
which one of those delivers the chamberlin sounds?
Any of the Mellotron M4000D family has Chamberlin sounds on it
Fucking lol
Is a sustain and/or switching pedal included?
Hi. No pedals are included. Thanks for watching!
@@synthblock I love this machine and trust that there's an input for a sustain pedal?
@@birchsongsltd.6831 Yes, there's a jack for a sustain pedal. I use an old Yamaha one from the early 1990s and have no issues.
