We use a Mellotron M400 on our 2 albums. Our newest album, Current, Volts & Ohms has M400 Mellotron on songs 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12. I think every song has some form of Mellotron, analog, digital and App or two.
We also use a digital M4000D, and two Mellotron Micro's, they sound amazing as well. Hard to tell the analog from the digital in a mix.
Thank you very much for the demonstration. I played in a band and I had a Mellotron 400 several years ago, i love it. This new product sounds very fine, very close to the original.
Much better demo than the other one. The 3 Violins B is completely different [and duller] sounding. Thanks for pointing out that little detail. I was wondering how they could sound so different. You really were not comparing apples to apples. But this one is a lot more convincing. Thank you! I love my M4000D rack module with latest firmware. I actually set my voice characteristics to MkII as I prefer that to the M400n or M400e selections.
Love my M4000D...and sound cards 02-03-04-05-06. I can tweek my Mellotron M4000D to sound just like the M300, M400, Mark I, Mark II, Mark IV, Mark V, Mark VII, and M4000. I bought mine from Marcus in 2017 and haven't even made a dent in all the possibilities this gem can produce. From what I understand, there is a sound card 07 that is loops of the band sounds. I'll have to wait before I get that one. I'm too busy experimenting with what I have so far. 10 stars to Marcus and the Mellotron.
Well I actually like the Chamberlin 3 Violins.
The Chamberlin 3 Violins was the only chamberlin sound to make it to the MellotronLibrary.

Sounds like the digital one has a very slight soft attack envelope programmed in. The originals have a very abrupt gate on/off envelope.
well , it is tape and a roller!
Not if your tapes are mounted in the rack in the proper position.
I discovered Paul McCartneys "Rupert Song" and thought that he used a mellotron for the strings. Seems like I was right.
Nice comparison! :-) Have you tried the Mellotron MkII Character in the audio settings? I've found I like that one the best of the 4 available characters since it sounds the most Mellotrony to me. ;-) I have the Rack and Micro versions.
The 3 violins sound, used famously at the end of the Apocalypse in 9/8 section of Suppers Ready by Genesis.

Which one - if money is no object 1) Mellotron 4000D mini 2) Memotron or 3) M Tron Pro ? The argument for the first - has great connectivity and pedal ( expression 1, 2 , volume , and sustain ) But other forums say that the Mellotron is modeled Directly from the Master tapes - so there is NO sound of a Mellotron ( it is just the sound of a brand new Mellotron working without any wow, flutter etc ) - so in other words. Whats the point ?Argument for second - Memotron is modeling acutally Mellotrons - so sonically got the warts and all of that - hence more authentic. Can be expanded - two discs, Connectivity wise poorer than Mellotron 3) Well M Tron Pro also modeled from actual machines - their tape library is insane.
Other options left out - Arturia Mellotron.

It`s great owning hardware but I don`t see why the older M-Tron Pro software isn`t as good for sound plus u can adjust the envelopes as well for more options and at the price these are they are more for the serious touring musician methinks, although if Waldorf can make a decent stab at String Machines with typical FX in the Streichfett then it`s a shame that you can`t get something like this for perhaps double the Waldorf machines price at say £500 ? or less, think I`d buy one then
I just got a Nord Electro 6D and that can be loaded with a bunch of Mellotron stuff in the sample synth area plus it`s a Piano and an organ too so another good alternative

I have a question about the audio settings on your M4000D mini.
My question is, did you have to update the firmware on your M4000D by adding an expansion card, or does the m4000d Mini already come with the motor modulation feature (and new firmware) fresh out of the box?
Hello Progulator, my M4000D mini already came with the motor modulation feature out of the box. I think that every unit you order today is equipped with this feature. Best :-)

Yes, they both work with the same software. 😊
Can this sound be duplicated on such early to mid 1980s workstations like the E-mu Emulator, Fairlight Mark II(x) and Kurzweil K250?
Big gap ,m400 tape sound is still the BEST! digital sound the rest.....
Do you know which tapes are loaded in your M400?
It should be the standard set of M400 Flute, M400 Cello and 3 Strings of the MK2. As far as I know there are no 3 Strings dedicated to the M400.
@@tapesnkeys Gotcha. I've been interested in this subject for awhile. The biggest change I'd like to see made with the M4000 (which fwiw is probably my favorite instrument I own) would be the addition of sounds of worn down tapes or even a setting to try to emulate an original tron.
