Fans of racing may be turned off by the emphasis on e-brake sliding around corners as well. TXR Drift has excellent visuals and loads of licensed cars like the Nissan GT-R, Nissan 300ZX, Audi, Toyota and Subaru SVX... but alas, there's no El Camino :(

I used to have this game. It was hard to control (or I really just sucked) and it was actually faster for me to use the walls and guard rails to turn. I actually won a lot of the races like that. lol

TXR Drift 2 is way better.
Love to see Mark review Import Tuner Challenge! Wish Genki would do another TXR game or at least Namco release the Maximum Tune games or Sega with the Initial D games over here in the US.

nah i like the way mark reviews. he gives you a good look at the game, talks about the mechanics and gameplay in depth enough, and lets the viewer make their own decision on whether the game is right for them or not. none of the reviews are misleading this way :) also you cant say he didn't criticize it, he pointed out how the races don't make use of the drifting factor of the game, sounds like criticism to me.
I have been looking for anything that does good reviewing (youtube channel, website, etc) anything that is good at reviewing by actually telling me what is good/bad about a video game, and not just giving me a stupid number like 5/10, 2/10, 10/10, honestly I don't care about numbers. Recently someone pointed me toward this channel. Honestly if this video is an example of your work, I think I am going to really enjoy watching your videos.

This review convinced me to buy the game.
you just need to spend a lot time playing this game to really play it the way it was supposed to be played. This game has a HUGE learning curve. Im talking about weeks, not hours here. You need to play this game often and a LOT to learn how to drift in it. Once you do, its quite amazing! THEN drifting in this game becomes fun and USEFUL. UA-cam up some videos, you'll find ppl who spend days playing this and mastering the drifting. A lot of people just give up however b/c of the learning curve.
You should reveiw more games from the wipeout series. (wipeout pure, 2048, HD, etc.)
The best game I've ever played to feature drifting would have to be Burnout Revenge, anyone else remember that for the PS2?
This is my #1 favorite show on youtube. half in the bag is second.
If you understand the culture behind these games, there almost nothing as good at replicating it in a perfect little experience
The real sequel to this game is Kaido Racer and it improves on absolutely everything in this game, without sucking the fun out of it like they did with Drift 2
You might like Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 though. It's based on the same principle, but the physics are much better, the cars are manageable, and there are a LOT more upgrades you can do to your car

I can understand Marks criticism on this one. These games can be a bit monotonous because there's so little variety in the scenery.

I've just watched an ad featuring Spanish... singer? Mario Vaquerizo just before this episode, and that made it more awesome.
I owned a ps2 and GameCube last gen I didn't pick up an OG Xbox until 2006 and it is by far the superior of the three and my favorite to play last gen multi-platform games and to collect for.
I got this game for 99¢ at Gamestop two weeks ago after CGR's previous Tokyo Xtreme Racer review (which I also bought.).

There's another racing/drifting game out there for the PS2, it's Battle Gear 2 and Battle Gear 3. Both Japan Only. Battle Gear 2 has a European version called Tokyo Road Race. It's got to be the best drifting game I've played, especially Battle Gear 4 for the arcade.
yeah because this game is more zen, it came from a time when we didn't know what worked so we innovated, it came from a time when game developers spent time making their games, it was from a time when we weren't given a half made game and had to buy the rest of it, it was fucking zen
TXRD2 owns this game by the looks of things. Still plan on buying this also but so hard finding a PAL version.
Genki's racing division GRP disbanded. There's a Shutokou Battle made after GRP, but's it's just an animu trading card game for the mobile phones.
One thing I never understood either was the amount of front wheel drive cars you could get. FWD. IN A DRIFTING GAME.

I never said "MARIO 64 AND OCARINA OF TIME SUCKS BECAUSE ARE OLD", and I don't think that, but in certain games, in a genre that has a specific goal (in Gt it would be simulation) the latest version of the game is simply better, and better and your favourite aren't the same thing, you obviusly can like more gt2, but it's not an opinion that gt5 is technically better.
This game was a newer than Tokyo extreme racer. Zero by few years I don’t understand why the graphics look like they are from 1996. Extreme racer zero and three, had very good graphics, especially for the time, even by today’s standards, they look good
Higher quality models in the world. I know it’s really hard to tell in this era, but the problem here was actually lighting. One of the old school tricks was to drop lighting quality for performance. They put a lot of high quality models in the game, because there’s a lot of terrain close to the player instead of open highways. Then they couldn’t balance the performance with the lighting effects from TXRZ so they drop them down.
In the long run it ends up looking worse for this game, but pays off in the others as you can see a dramatic increase in quality once they figured out how to light these new models.
I agree with you, but he obviously focuses on quantity over quality, which is not a bad thing. Hes review count has 6 digits, so the coverage of games - systems is extensive. I sometimes wonder how does he pull it off. But thats the thing, he is not doing deep review as like IGN would do, he rather plays the game for few hours and tells the people what he thinks of the game. And i like that.
I remember playing the original Tokyo Xtreme Racer on Dreamcast. Man I played the shit out of that game.
the second game feels way better, and the drifting get's better and the game itself relies on races and time trials more. 1st one is okay but the second one is way better
I guess this is the name they gave in the west to the PS2 Initial D games? Since they were made by Crave too, the same devs as the real Tokyo Xtreme Racer games.

I was going to ask you to do a review of Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2, but the controls on that game are xtremely realistic.
Even though it's miles better than TXRD1, since you're not that into drifting and complex driving mechanics, you might want to skip it.
You need to play Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 Mark, its even better!
Why are there no current gen Shutokou Battle games? Wangan Midnight doesn't count.

I always think that any driving game that takes focus away from just driving fast is kind of missing the point, unless they do whatever their gimmick is really well.

4:21 Mt. Haruna is actually in Gunma Prefecture (where I live) and not in Tokyo. So they really should change the name of the game to something like Kanto Xtream Racing or something like that.
I understand how some people may find the xbox 360 better than the ps3, but how the HELL was the original xbox better than the ps2? Seriously?

Why would you want a Corvette in a game that involves hairpins? jk the Corvette is not that bad.
Although Mark is right. the ai has an unfair advantage in corners, even if you're driving properly, at least on the downhill.

Someone has to send Mark the D1 Drift Series PS2 game. Kaido Battle and Kaido Battle 2 are not quite as frustrating.
I dont like these type of games but why the hell did i avoid this when i had my Ps2? looks great...
I played this game recently and it's not that good...drift 2 made it way better. I get that it's their first version of it but the loading screens, grinding the stupid day time for cash, loading screens, the message board to start certain race into another loading a screen getting out...rinse and repeat until you lose you mind.I gave up playing this game and like you said the AI is annoying. They ram you into the walls. Why can't I just earn cash by a racing people...(drift 2 brought this in) I did my first ever review on this game because I was so disappointed by a Genki game I just had to warn people.
That's what I was thinking... but I didn't want to make assumptions.
Still love the ps2 though

its stupid to have personal preference? technological advancements mean nothing to people if they dont have fun with the games....it makes no sense to call someone stupid over it...you like what you like its that simple. as for nostalgia? how do you know he doesnt still play his ps2?
if he really thinks its better it would be no surprise that he would....the nostalgia card doesnt always work. im an example of that, i still play old games and have loads of fun with them as well as newer stuff
to some degree, but i feel that the ps1 had the better games. ps2 was alright, some really good games there too and the ps3...that was a decent system..but id still take it over the ps2
the intro song on kaido battle 2 (europes release name) is imposible to find a clean cut
hey can you review gadget racers, choro q, or roadtrip adventures. practically any of the choro q hg series of games
D1 grand prix and gran turismo 3 is the best drifting games for ps2
