Rebuilding a Yamaha Outboard Carburetor

  • This 1988 outboard carburetor was very interesting to rebuild. 1989- thru ~1980 had some parts in them that if you lost, your carb. was going in the trash. Mainly the four air jets on the main body of the carburetor. I looked everywhere and it appears the carb. to have would have been any 1990 and newer version, as parts were still available. A single replacement would cost you about ~$400.

    Those brass plugs you had a helluva time removing using a punch. Little tip for you... use an impact screw driver. I got one from harbor freight that you hit with a hammer and it turns it at the same time. Good video!

    It's so much easier to loosen those big brass plugs before before removing the crowd. Again a well fit screw driver like you said. Lot of pressure, a few light taps and with pressure and quality screw driver turn with pressure and vise Grips attached to quality screwdriver. Easy-peasy way to loosen them up before the rebuild

      Paul , please take the carbs out and rebuild them. These carbs get nasty real quick. I wasn’t able to see a way to adjust the floats. I typically do this on inboard motors. Let me know if you still need help and l I’ll confirm.

      There was two things I found before tarping for the winter.
      One - I had one needle valve that would intermittently stick. I put a q-tip in a drill and cleaned the seat, that seemed to help.
      Also, the new needle valves I had, the metal wire that wraps around them was too tight? The needle wouldn't freely move.. it was stuck.. I think this was also causing them to stick occasionally.
      I went back to my original needles from when I bought the boat, and they seemed to move freely.
      Set the float height, tuned it in the water, and all was well... Until.. I found water in my gas tank.
      The boat ran in an external tank. I hooked up the main tank, and it dies within a minute. Drained the carb bowls, and the milky gas that came out was unbelievable. Gas wasn't that old, and was treated! No ethanol!
      Had to put the boat away for the season, but looks like I'm in for some gas tank fun in the spring. Also ordered new needle valves, and a fuel pump for good measure.

    I got a 200 Yamaha 2 stroke with 3 carbs on it the middle carburetor had no fuel in the bowls at all the needle and valve was stuck motor runs fine on the hose it revs up it will run for hours and hours on the hose but soon you put the boat in the water put it in gear under back pressure the RPMs drop and soon as you go to put a load on the motor it bogs and stalls don't know what the problem is
    Did a compression check on the motor 115 to 120 PSI in cylinder any help would be great

    • @michaelromer2016
      @michaelromer2016  4 роки тому +1

      One thing is for sure, these old carbs must be rebuilt periodically to make sure they are clean. It even sounds like you might have a fuel line clogged. The middle carb must be performing correctly before you go down the rabbit hole of troubleshooting other things.

      I rebuilt my carbs on a 89 225 with the same carbs. Randomly I get a float that wants to stick when I'm on the water. I took them apart and noticed the gasket tab behind the hinge of the float would catch the adjustment tab on the back of the float every now and then not allowing the needle to seat. I trimmed it off because I don't see a need for it and I'm anxious to see if this doesn't solve the problem.
