Thanks For watching Trying to incorporate new ideas into the channel so now we have Home, RV, portable power station, solar and wind lots more to come. My water heater is propane😅
@@GeneratorReviews I understand that you are asked tons of requests but one I have if you wanna research it is the Lifan 15kw portable generator. I appreciate it thanks!
Here waterfront in SW Florida and took a direct hit from hurricane IAN, 150+ winds sustained for 8 hours with no power for 10 days. Ran this Duromax 9000i (brilliant purchase) and it really did an amazing job powering our panel with a 30 amp plug. We have two AC units a 5 ton and a 2 ton. Elected to run only the 2 ton unit non stop with fans blowing about and honestly lived like we had power. Of course used 8 gallons of gas per day and the hot water heater Elec was something we would shutdown AC for an hour to heat up the tank (did to conserve fuel). If your concerned about hot water, just installed a Rheme heat pump hot water heater which has a run load of 100 watts, ready for the next situation here! Not to mention saving $45 per month in Elec with the new hot water heater. Obviously gas supply is a situation, got creative pumping gas out of the boat with a Tera AA Batt powered gas pump, our boat has 100+ gallon tank; newer boats are anti-syphon so if you remove the access panel for the fuel sender unit you have pumpable fuel.
That 5 ton AC even with the soft-start way more than exceeded the peak rating of that unit. 10k+ watts inrush on a unit rated for 9k watts. Impressive.
Thank you so much for your videos with what I learned, I was able to setup my generator to run my whole house. Ran a test and everything worked great. Next test is my ac. Will not do that until I look at your video on installing the micro air easy start
I appreciate the videos I am shopping hard. I have had a 50amp interlock setup since we bought out house but we have hardly lost power in 2 years. But storms are getting worse, and we are do for a big hurricane here in the SC midlands so I want to be ready. Id be interested to put a clamp on that line and see what it is drawing for amps for the AC and the dryer.
Thanks for your excellent informative videos! I just purchased a food trailer and Duromax 9000...you have been my go to! Thanks to you, I learned that I need a soft start on my split AC. Keep it coming!!
Not for long if your running it on propane. My generator ran a total of 42 hrs on propane and solenoid valve fuse kept popping. Changed fuse retried propane ran 10 secs then shut off. Changed fuse again used gas ran fine. Called Dromax they knew about the issue in August of 23. They did not send out any bulletins. Now I have a generator with a whole sum of 42 hrs run time. Will only burn gas. Reached out to Duromax. Only had a 2 yr manufacturers warranty. Bought mine in July of 22. Bought a 4 yr extended thu Asurion. Bought unit thru Amazon. Go to their website they are now claiming 3 years' warranty on their generators. So I can get parts I hope from these people, but would be very leary of what they say generators will do. I'm going to the State Attorney General in Texas if I don't hear back from them.
Apparently Duromax knows about the problem with that fuel selector solenoid. They say they changed to a different solenoid beginning with 2024 production models.
I've been putting off getting a generator, I thought everyone was just paranoid, but the way things are now I'm going to get one. This a nice machine. Thanks for the videos. 👍
great video! now it's all about which one I will purchase but, I still would like to know how long will it run on a tank (20lb) of propane gas? Just on an average use.
Hi Gavin, do you have a video on how to select and install a soft start for the AC unit? I heard they can also help extend the life of the AC unit. Thanks!
This Generator is on my short list for upgrading my home system based on your reviews of this and other units. I've noticed that this unit, the PREDATOR and other Generators in this class all have bonded neutrals. The NEC requires a floating neutral when used for home generator backup. Duromax does not recommend un-bonding the neutral from the ground. What are your thoughts.
Hey, Chip It’s pretty easy to convert it to a floating neutral. If you’re going to hook it up to your home using an inlet box it’s right about a 15 to 20 minutes DIY
@@GeneratorReviews I know it's easy. I've been taking things apart all my life. Duromax says not to because it's designed to work with a transfer switch. Champion provides directions on how to do it. I have four Honda's (two EU3000is and two EU2500i), and all have floating neutrals. This time I want dual fuel
I know we are all trying to get the longest run time out of the generator during a power outage while using the central air, but are we putting too much load on the genny when it is in ECO mode and the compressor kicks on with a heavy draw. Yes keep the temp set higher to limit the cycling on and off, but during a/c use would it be better to run the generator not in ECO mode???
This generator still idles at around 3/4 with the AC running you would be wasting gas running wide open throttle plus every time your AC cycles it will be running for nothing. Let the Gen work like it was designed for. Thanks for watching
How's your XP9000ih holding up? Looks like they came out with a new 9500 version where they're pushing the same setup hotter, but it comes with the CO nanny and somehow weighs 20lb less. Thinking of grabbing one of the "old" ones while they're available.
You need to turn off the low Idle Everytime before turn on the generator ? And the main breaker too ? Or I can leave ON both things when going to start the generator
I don’t like my engine starting up in wide open throttle if I can prevent it. The breaker should be off during startup to allow warm up before introducing the load
I'm considering getting this generator or the A-i 7100. Did you switch all your generators to a floating neutral since you plug them directly into the power inlet on the house sometimes?
My licensed electrician who just installed the InterlockKit and a 50 amp inlet told me to not disconnect the neutral on the ground lug of the generator. He said that another customer of his did that on this same generator and blew out 5 GFCI's as well as a diode controlled bathroom fan in his house. He reconnected the neutral on the generator and after my electrician repaired the damage, he didn't have any further problems. My electrician explained that when the utility power is disconnected, the neutral ground at the panel is disconnected as well, so you need the neutral bonding at the generator. Just be sure to ground the generator at the generator ground lug with a grounding rod and 12 AWG wire as recommended by DuroMax for the XP900ih.
Thanks for this video. I have also installed the X48 MicroAir on my 4 ton unit. My Champion generator also has ~9kW starting power like yours. The starting amps vary from 38 to sometimes 75. MicroAir has told me not to worry about those high numbers. (I have not tried starting this new unit on my generator yet). Questions for you: do the start amps vary widely? And does the generator struggle at all with your start amps of ~44 amps? Thanks for any comments.
@@GeneratorReviews 230x45 amps = over 10,300 watts. how does the generator surge to the peak amps shown on microair app in video. the generator only has 9k starting. trying to figure it out.
If you know what a microair softstart unit actually does. It has computer controlled start up capacitors. So the start up requested amps are provided by the microair capacitors. Then as the microaire capitors give up there charge ,in the start up phase, the electrical amps ( in line) replace the capacitor amps , to bring the requested running amps , for the heating / cooling unit. They work . I have spoken to the company techs and have one installed where I live.
I removed the bonded to frame neutral. If I want to use the generator not connected to the house do I have to go back in and reconnect the neutral? Also I am wondering should I install a 30 amp breaker or a 50 amp to run my generator?
You don’t have to bond it back, you can use a bonding plug if needed. The 30 amp inlet is ok if you don’t plan on paralleling two generators in the future.
Hey Gavin!! I just got a new control board shipped for mine and the wire colors are a bit different. Can you send a photo of the wiring loom on the oil change side to me please?
That’s a great unit but it helps that you have a soft start on the a/c , otherwise I think that the generator wouldn’t start or it may have a hard time with the 5 ton
Interesting.. I have an XP9000ih but mine only has the single 120/240V 30A receptacle and has a 30A breaker on that outlet. I tried to run 2 RV ac units on mine but the 30A breaker trips when the second AC starts. My meter is showing a max of 45A when the 2nd compressor kicks in.
I was thinking of getting 2 of these to parallel as my home backup. That was until I saw the parallel kit for it. I understand I haven't seen them in person, but I will have to say in pictures, the wire look to tiny to supply 37 amps. Wondering if you've seen the kit in person, and if so, if you had the same feeling about it?
I purchased the XP9000IH and got 2 different responses from Duromax support. Question was, for Idle Control…Can it be “ON” when the generator is connected to your home? For conventional generators I know that Idle Control should be “OFF” but for an inverter the engine can adjust to the load. I would appreciate some feedback on this. Thanks
The whole idea behind Eco mode is to save fuel. There’s no reason to ever have it off. If you plan on running the generator at 100%, then you can turn it off but if you’re powering standard loads where it should be at least 50% of your generator total output, Eco mode should always be on. There’s no reason for your generator to be running wide, open throttle in a power outage situation. I hope this helps. Happy holidays.
Just a question did you run the AC along with the washer and dryer and along with the oven or was it just one by one you know did you turn on the AC and then turn off the washer and dryer and the oven off or all three other run togetherquestion
You've connected a 50A circuit to a 30A adapter cord to the 30A outlet on the generator...... the result with the main a/c on is 43A. In my 30 years running power for military applications I have never seen this type of operation before.
Hi Mitchell Once you have added your oil run it for 30 min let it cool down and change the oil, then you’ll run conventional oil 10w-30 and use it normally for 50 hours. Do not just let it run wasting time and gas please only use it if you have to. Change oil every at 50 hours 3 times, this is not a race it doesn’t matter how long it takes for break-in. Then at 150 - 200 hrs you can switch to 5w-30 synthetic and oil changes go to every 100 hrs.
Would the propane do the same performance as you just did with gasoline? I am looking at a propane generator hoping it can keep up like gasoline. What is louder the predator 9500 or this? What do you prefer the predator or this?
hi i notice that you use a adapter, is it fine if i put a 20 amp adapter on my 30 amp plug to. plug in my 20amp water pump because my pressure washer is using the single 20 amp plug on my generator? Because someone told me that it’s not good
I guess it depends on what you’re going to do with your generator, for home use I would say that I prefer the Duromax because of the dual fuel having that option in a power outage really helps.
Why did the voltage keep going from 120v to 240 v while it was running ? They told me it needed repaired and I took it back. Your meter read the same thing ?
The display shows both voltages 240v and 120v. That is absolutely normal. It just goes between both all the time. Remember the generator can provide 240v and 120v at the same time so it just cycles.
Gavin, I bought the Vevor 50 amp cord you recommended through your link. I got it, but it doesn't say Vevor on it. It says Everdevelop Electric Appliances Co. Is yours marked Vevor? Not sure if I got the right cord. Would appreciate your input. Thanks!
@@GeneratorReviews Thank you for your reply, sir. Maybe Vevor is some kind of abbreviation for Everdevelop. I also asked my electrician if it was a weather resistant cord and he said yes, it's good. 👍👍👍
Even though the wires, plugs, breakers, etc are 30amp, they can briefly supply much higher (as in motor starts like this.). The 30amp rating is for continuous usage, heat/damage from exceeding that take time and circuit breakers are designed to allow brief excessive amps. (Starting amps are only maintained briefly, for less than a second.) The generator can also briefly surge above the rating (to 10k plus watts in this case). The soft start does make it possible, the generator wouldn't of been able to surge to 20kw (if 80amp starting) req'd for normal starting.
I was debating on getting this 9000 inverter or the 13,000HX for my house. I’m just a little concerned the 9000 won’t be enough to take care of my air conditioning along with lighting/refrigerator. I really like the inverters, because they seem to be a lot quieter and will throttle up and down depending upon load demand. The 9000inverter is 30 amp The 13,000HX is 50 amp
The 43 amps is the inrush current. Inrush current only happens for a split second. For instance, my 3 ton AC is on a 30 amp breaker in my panel but at start up the inrush is sometimes over 90 amps.
Confused as to why it says the 240 plug is only 30amps when clearly each leg is up to 30 amp which gives you 60 potential amps… this was shown in another vid when connecting to your RV- I want to use on my houseboat that have a 240 50 amp connection -
It’s 30 amp at 240 V, but you do have the potential of getting 30amps on each leg at 120 V If you want for 50 amp plug, check out the Genmax 9000 W or the Genmax 10,500w ua-cam.com/video/szCU8ivFMYE/v-deo.html
@@GeneratorReviews I think i understand....On this vid it shows you using the 30amp 240 plug and on your monitor it shows L1 and L2 on that plug pulling close to 50 Amps combined....This is why I'm confused as to why they call it 30amp plug.... Or does this mean if they would go over 30 on one of the legs then it would kick.... Sorry just trying to understand.... Also these are the best vids on youtube by far for generator reviews...
@@GeneratorReviews I spoke with DuroMax and they said if I was going to use the 30A outlet and the total power used at that outlet was less than 7200W, then I could run extension cords from the other 120V duplex outlets on the generator and access the remaining capacity (i.e., up to a total of 7200W). BTW, excellent video. I have been researching this topic and this exact generator along with A/C soft start devices and using a 50A transfer switch (or interlock) to do exactly this. There is a ton of opinions online but yours is the first actual demonstration of seeing ALL the components working together! Many thanks!
Great video Gavin. Now when you where doing the test. Was your refrigerator/ freezer on during all the test you did? I saw that your micro air working great on your ac unit. Starting at 43, I’ve been having trouble with mine since I installed the micro air. 80% of the time my start ups are at 72 -75. I’ve been sending micro air diagnostic of the unit. They’re suppose to send me another capacitor to replace on the micro air, but they take a long time sending there parts. So far I’m not impressed with my micro air. Thanks 🙏 for the video.
Which one did you install? The X48 or X72? I have a similar case that I sometimes see ~70amps. Most of the time it is around 40 amps. My AC unit is a new unit (2 months old) and has a scroll compressor. When I had the MicroAir on my old condenser (piston compressor), the start amps were consistently around 30 amps. My generator had no problem starting the old one with both fridges, TV, lights etc. on. I am wondering if these scroll compressors somehow affect the MicroAir? I am tempted to purchase the X72 for my 4 ton to see if this helps.
@@papajohn3182 I got the the 48 since my unit is a 4 ton. My readings were coming out to high. They send me anther capacitor (apparently a bigger stronger one) for the easy start. I installed today and my readings have been in the 45-52 now.
@@sae1964 Thanks for the reply…2 questions: 1) Is the capacitor they sent for inside of the X48, or the one in your AC? 2) Does your AC unit have a scroll compressor? Thanks.
Has anyone used this for more than a few hours? All of the reviews I can find are of a couple hour run time machine, where I find plenty of long term predator reviews.
Hey Joe Yeah, you gotta have a soft start in a power outage situation the generator will not start the 5 Ton AC without one. I know a lot of people don’t have one but if you want that comfort
The last time we lost power after a bad storm 10 days no power in the middle of summer inside the house went up to 104. My kid was four years old. I wish I had this set up just to cool the house down so they can sleep.

The 43A is peak surge it's not continuous. He's only pulling 22.5 continuous while running the AC.
Hey Gavin just got my Duromax 9000ih.What's the break in procedure? Nothing in the manual about break in.
Hi Mitchell
Once you have added your oil run it for 30 min let it cool down and change the oil, then you’ll run conventional oil 10w-30 and use it normally for 50 hours.
The propane power comes pretty close on these larger generators
They’re almost identical when it comes to db testing
hi i notice that you use a adapter, is it fine if i put a 20 amp adapter on my 30 amp plug to. plug in my 20amp water pump because my pressure washer is using the single 20 amp plug on my generator? Because someone told me that it’s not good
You can 👍🏾
Would this generator start your AC without the Easy start installed?
The short answer is no unfortunately, but it also depends on the size of the generator if you had a 4 ton of 5 ton that’s a hard no.
@@GeneratorReviews I have a 5 ton unit and debating the soft start with a 9500 watt generator. This will help. Thank you.
Is it possible to parallel this one with the 2300 or do they not make a parallel kit to do such a thing?
They at least has to be both 240v Inverter generators
which generator do you prefer? the Duromax or Predator?
I guess it depends on what you’re going to do with your generator, for home use I would say that I prefer the Duromax because of the dual fuel having that option in a power outage really helps.
Do you need to float the neutral when plugging into the panel through an interlock kit?
Yes, you do need to have a floating neutral when you plug it into the interlock kit
Yes, you do need to have a floating neutral when you plug it into the interlock kit
@@GeneratorReviews gotcha so I gotta float the neutral on this duromax. What about an interlock?
@@jonlee5642 yeah if it’s a transfer switch you’re fine the interlock you have to float it
Gavin... Is it possible to unbond the neutral on the Duromax?
This generator has a neutral bonded to frame. Do I need to remove it to run it on my house?
Yessir that’s the best way to connect it to your house.
the breaker was a 50 amp in the main panel?
Yessir
Why did the voltage keep going from 120v to 240 v while it was running ? They told me it needed repaired and I took it back.
Your meter read the same thing ?
The display shows both voltages 240v and 120v. That is absolutely normal. It just goes between both all the time. Remember the generator can provide 240v and 120v at the same time so it just cycles.
The service tech at Duromax said that wasn’t right ? Go figure !
Gavin, I bought the Vevor 50 amp cord you recommended through your link. I got it, but it doesn't say Vevor on it. It says Everdevelop Electric Appliances Co. Is yours marked Vevor? Not sure if I got the right cord. Would appreciate your input. Thanks!
I’m pretty sure it’s the same cord the manufacturer probably changed
I have the same one you got
@@GeneratorReviews Thank you for your reply, sir. Maybe Vevor is some kind of abbreviation for Everdevelop. I also asked my electrician if it was a weather resistant cord and he said yes, it's good. 👍👍👍
How is your XP9000IH doing now that it's been a year?
I don’t still have that unit. I sold that one a while back.
How is 5ton starting when running of 30amp plug from generator, but A/C showed starting at 42 amps?
There’s a soft start installed on this condenser
Even though the wires, plugs, breakers, etc are 30amp, they can briefly supply much higher (as in motor starts like this.). The 30amp rating is for continuous usage, heat/damage from exceeding that take time and circuit breakers are designed to allow brief excessive amps. (Starting amps are only maintained briefly, for less than a second.)
The generator can also briefly surge above the rating (to 10k plus watts in this case).
The soft start does make it possible, the generator wouldn't of been able to surge to 20kw (if 80amp starting) req'd for normal starting.
Do you turn eco mode on or off when hooking to a house?
I always run in eco mode because I’m always trying to extend my run time as much as possible.
Hello Gavin will the xp 9000ih run both of my 5 ton AC with soft start at the same time?
No, it won’t run both 5 ton AC at the same time you’ll have to step up to the 16,000W
Very good video. 🤙
The 9000inverter is 30 amp
The 13,000HX is 50 amp
Question...can generator run ac without soft start?
Yes it can👍🏾
If your running your AC you can’t run the washer or dryer at the same time… is this correct?
That is correct, you can only run one at a time
Just wondering, are you not worried about pulling 43 Amps through a 30 Amp receptacle on the generator?!
You can actually pull 30 amp per leg
The 43 amps is the inrush current. Inrush current only happens for a split second. For instance, my 3 ton AC is on a 30 amp breaker in my panel but at start up the inrush is sometimes over 90 amps.
Confused as to why it says the 240 plug is only 30amps when clearly each leg is up to 30 amp which gives you 60 potential amps… this was shown in another vid when connecting to your RV- I want to use on my houseboat that have a 240 50 amp connection -
It’s 30 amp at 240 V, but you do have the potential of getting 30amps on each leg at 120 V
If you want for 50 amp plug, check out the Genmax 9000 W or the Genmax 10,500w
ua-cam.com/video/szCU8ivFMYE/v-deo.html
@@GeneratorReviews I think i understand....On this vid it shows you using the 30amp 240 plug and on your monitor it shows L1 and L2 on that plug pulling close to 50 Amps combined....This is why I'm confused as to why they call it 30amp plug.... Or does this mean if they would go over 30 on one of the legs then it would kick.... Sorry just trying to understand.... Also these are the best vids on youtube by far for generator reviews...
Does that generator have a 50 amp outlet? 30Amp X 220V = 6600W which means you would never get the full 9000W.
It only has a 30 amp outlet 240×30= 7200
The generator can surge up to 9000 W for starting appliances
@@GeneratorReviews I spoke with DuroMax and they said if I was going to use the 30A outlet and the total power used at that outlet was less than 7200W, then I could run extension cords from the other 120V duplex outlets on the generator and access the remaining capacity (i.e., up to a total of 7200W). BTW, excellent video. I have been researching this topic and this exact generator along with A/C soft start devices and using a 50A transfer switch (or interlock) to do exactly this. There is a ton of opinions online but yours is the first actual demonstration of seeing ALL the components working together! Many thanks!
Curious what seer rating is your 5 ton unit?
I believe it’s 16 seer
Being a DUROMAX brand is it gas or diesel ?
This one’s a dual fuel, gas and propane
Great video Gavin. Now when you where doing the test. Was your refrigerator/ freezer on during all the test you did? I saw that your micro air working great on your ac unit. Starting at 43, I’ve been having trouble with mine since I installed the micro air. 80% of the time my start ups are at
72 -75. I’ve been sending micro air diagnostic of the unit. They’re suppose to send me another capacitor to replace on the micro air, but they take a long time sending there parts. So far I’m not impressed with my micro air. Thanks 🙏 for the video.
Like every thing you could’ve gotten a bad one Change the capacitor check all your connections
@@papajohn3182 X72 yes the larger capacitors will definitely help
@@papajohn3182 I got the the 48 since my unit is a 4 ton. My readings were coming out to high. They send me anther capacitor (apparently a bigger stronger one) for the easy start. I installed today and my readings have been in the 45-52 now.
@@sae1964 Thanks for the reply…2 questions: 1) Is the capacitor they sent for inside of the X48, or the one in your AC? 2) Does your AC unit have a scroll compressor? Thanks.
How much watts would a tv pull?
A midsize TV will pull less than 150 to 200 W
Where can I get an inline monitor .The same kind you have
I will be making them shortly👍🏾
It's best to let it warm up without anything being plugged in!
what if you run an AC without a soft start?
It wouldn’t start without a soft start
@@GeneratorReviews even a 3 ton won't start?
Why does he keep showing different generators when the "Easy Start" soft starter is the star of the show!
lol
Has anyone used this for more than a few hours? All of the reviews I can find are of a couple hour run time machine, where I find plenty of long term predator reviews.
This one and the predator are identical machines one has dual fuel
@Gavin’s Garage Except for the control panel. Hoping she lasts long term.
Thanks again for your amazing content!
It runs great but I was using it to DJ and it suddenly stop putting out electricity even though it was still running.
Sounds like the circuit breaker may have tripped due to overloading or ground fault
This one seems louder than the Honda 7,000.
Yes it’s louder by around 8 - 10 decibels
Yeah its starts the A/C with a soft start, a lot of people don't have a soft start installed and this gen will not run a 5 ton unit.
Hey Joe
Yeah, you gotta have a soft start in a power outage situation the generator will not start the 5 Ton AC without one.
I know a lot of people don’t have one but if you want that comfort
If the power is off the last thing I care about is A.C.
The last time we lost power after a bad storm 10 days no power in the middle of summer inside the house went up to 104. My kid was four years old.
I wish I had this set up just to cool the house down so they can sleep.
Misleading, considering you have a SoftStart on that 5-ton AC compressor.
That’s technology that’s not misleading in order to run your AC on a Generator with a LRA of 117 amps you have to have a soft start.
No way, it can't run 5-ton A/C
Maybe running on Gasoline only
Propane will power your 5ton A/C
DO NOT BUY A DUROMAX UNTIL THEY MAKE PARTS AVAILABLE FOR THEIR GENERATORS. NO PARTS LIST, NOT EVEN AMAZON SELLS THEM.
No NG 😩
Do not purchase anything from duromax. If something goes wrong you will be waiting months to get it fixed.
What happened to your generator?
@@GeneratorReviews Random fual leak from bad gasket which is made with recycled paper. Then they confirmed a another faulty part needs to be replaced, but the company, DuroMax, waits months to send it out. I live in Nashville, TN and Altaquip is the only company willing to do warranty repairs! Altaquip has DuroMax equipment just sitting for months waiting for parts.
Is very loud
it’s not that loud. It’s pretty quiet. For a 9000w generator.
