Bought this great generator a little while ago. For the record I really like it! Works great and powers the entire house during a power outage. Obviously do the math and figure out what you want to use during a power outage. However, the only issue I want to report is you might need a bigger gas meter to use a natural gas connection to fuel your generator. Also recommend adding up all of the BTU's you plan to use during the Powe outage and then make sure your gas meeting can handle the additional 225K BTU's for the generator. So, if you buy the generator and it will not start on natural gas, call your gas company and get a bigger gas meter. Once I upgraded the meter the generator started up on the first crank. Best of luck!

That is great advice! Depending on the location/municipality a larger gas meter may be needed.

A very good general overview of the process to convert a home for using a tri-fuel generator. Of course, every state, local and city building codes will be different. Considering this work requires multiple utilities (gas, electrical, etc...) hire a professional contractor to complete this work. This video used 3 different men all from different contractors for a reason. This is not a do-it-yourself job for most people. Be safe, be smart and do it the right way.

These professionals make the job of installing the gas line hook up and the electrical 50 amp breaker hook up look very easy but, in actuality, it's not as easy as it looks. You have to know how to do it correctly and that takes some knowledge know how to do it properly. If you think you can do the job, give it a try but, remember to have it inspected before you actually try running it. If you run into trouble, you can always call in the professional.

The cost is higher but using a soft starter is better than a hard start and will extend the life of the outside unit. Also turn off some of the high amperage breakers and turn them on gradually after the generator power is running into the panel.

Lol was about to leave this comment. The in rush current is instantaneous and that meter he used is not able to detect the momentary current that the AC condenser actually pulls. I would guess it still has an instantaneous in rush of at least 40 amps, but it could be up to twice that. Micro Air East Start is the way to go and I have installed several, the other big bonus with soft start is that it will actually give your condenser a longer life as well 👍

More then just a few things missing. A 5 ton unit does NOT draw 34 amps at start up. My 3 ton draws 102 amps LRA (Locked Rotor Amps) so I paused the video when you put the cover back on the A/C unit and can see LRA is 131 amps. Yes this is momentary, but the generator is going to see it. Your reduced power supply running on natural gas may not run it.

    • @DuroMaxPower

DuroMax open frame Generators are considered Floating Neutral Generators. This means that they do not have a bond from the Generator frame to the neutral. Not bad but let’s address a few things that may not have been mentioned or overlooked #1 now that a load is being added to the system let’s calculate the total BTUs, including the new generator and determine if the gas meter can handle the total load (this may include a call to the local gas utility to let them know your intentions on adding a load; especially if their computer system is set up for spike load readings). #2 those things on top of the meter are not called unions they are referred to as meter nuts. #3 let’s try to use an adjustable wrench on those service valves, pipe wrenches tend to marr the brass lugs on service valves. # 4 let’s try to incorporate a sediment trap at the generator and hose connection. And #5 it’s recommended that you take gas pressure readings (lock up & working) , this would involve all the gas appliances in the house plus your newly installed generator (running all at once for working pressure).Hope some of this information helps and stay safe out there.

Actually, when adding gas load, it’s mandatory to inform the utility. That meter is not rated for that load assuming there’s heating equipment already attached. Additionally, the utility should install the takeoff point (tee), not a contractor, at the time they replace the meter (assuming the gas service is sufficient for the added load).
Other comments: never apply pipe dope (sealant) to the first two threads; never wrench a close nipple like he did which damages the threads (and yea, that nipple leaked); never turn off the gas supply before closing all inside valves (and turning off any appliances with power to them such as a furnace or boiler or power vented water heater) or else any operating appliances will suck the gas out of the pipes requiring a lot more purging once the supply is restored.
Lastly, the “coupler” to the right of the tee Tony installed, is not actually a coupler, but a pipe end protector, and while Tony didn’t install it, it should not be used as a coupler.

When you paint the gas pipe, use some painters tape or old newspaper to pritect the exterior wall from paint, not like this plumber. You also never unthread a nipple like that, you can see he deformed it. It is always reccomended to change the gas meter gaskets once they become loose, you may need 10lt, 20lt or 30lt.

DuroMax Tri Fuel Generators use a 3/4" Natural Gas Hose

Different manufacturers call it different things but yes. We recommend the Micro Air soft start for use with our Generators.

Oh thats rough! Whereabouts are you located?

Galvanized pipe should not be used with Nat Gas, Propane, Gasoline, Oil or Diesel Fuel. Only use carbon steel pipe.
