I'm just checking out some of your older videos. I thought you were in a pretty tight bank to be switching focus from the outside, and my heart actually started beating faster with the shock when you hit the water. I'm not much for combat aircraft these days - two decades of endless real wars have pretty much soured me on war-anything. But this one is very tempting. The paintwork is fabulous.
A great review. I could feel your enthusiasm. And I had the old pucker factor as you came in on your approach. I am won on this one, too ... (a bit of a play with words there).
Thanks for the great review. It really helped with the decision to purchase. I just purchased this for myself (March 2023). It definitely has the secret sauce -- my favourite warbird to fly, somehow slightly more fun than the FI Spitfire and P-38 (although those both great as well).
Freaking awesome review, man it looks like a bear to handle! Now if MSFS would work on actual weapon use, I could see these warplanes becoming very popular!
Shouldn't be a bear - the Hellcat, unlike the Corsair, was designed with low-time pilots in mind and was known to be easy to handle. Just have to keep in mind that it's not agile - don't get it into a turning fight. Think boom and zoom, think vertical, keep speed up and you'll be fine.
My late father worked on the Wildcat and Hellcat in the Fleet Air Arm in WW2. I still have his engine manual! This looks like a DCS beater! The DCS F18 used to cat launch and fly with wings folded....they fixed the error after a while. But this sim looks the business....like to see the cat launch effect? Thanks for the review!😉
Nice preview! I purchased this bird immediately. Quite a no-brainer after the excellent Spitfire and P-38. A little hint: I see that your external camera usage is always very rough. But you can use the drone camera with an Xbox Controller, if you have one. This allows for much more precise controls, thanks to the analog sticks, and you can adjust the camera speed and zoom very easily as well (by holding the X or Y buttons respectively and using the left or right triggers to make it faster/slower or to zoom in/out). It's already perfectly set up for that by default. That should make your walkarounds much easier to control and also better to look at. ;)
@@AvAngel That's not an issue at my end. Each controller works concurrently in the sim, and every single one works as intended when I use it. Just make sure that you set wide enough dead zones for the XBox controller, because they tend to have quite a bit of wiggle room when centered, leading to unintentional inputs when the deadzone is too small.
This is one of my most favorite war birds. I told myself I wouldn't buy any war birds for this sim since there's no actual combat, but looking at this beautiful beast and hearing that growl is tempting me to give in. Of course if I do give in and get it I know I'll end up getting the P-38 and others too! This early preview is like wagging it in my face and saying come on... do it, buy this... BUY THIS! Not sure exactly why since i do like military aircraft. I believe it's because i prefer to chill out and enjoy relaxing scenic flights to exotic locations. You said that this has 200 horsepower in your in your review. You forgot a 0 because this plane has 2000 horse power. Love the radium dipped night gages!
Just picked it up last night. Haven't had a chance to fly it yet, but looking forward to getting some time in it. If you want to learn more about flying it, the Airboyd channel has the WWII Pilot familiarization videos up for it. They go through the various flight operations and how to get up to speed on flying a heavy fighter. On takeoff you should only need to open the cowl flaps and go to 42", auto rich, full fine and let it fly itself off. Unless you're doing War Emergency power take offs or spending a lot of time on the ground, you shouldn't have big engine temp problems. On the spin, you probably got into an accelerated stall. It's got enough stick authority and enough mass that you can get the plane pointing in a different direction that it's traveling. One thing I'm really looking forward to seeing just where I can land this thing. It's stall speed is around 75-80 kt, which is pretty low for a WWII fighter, and into the GA range. Would be fascinating to see if you can bush fly in it :)
