    This is one of the most moving versions I have heard so far. Everything is precise, perfect and still sounding so human, so dramatic. The Matthäus-Passion's opening is, in my view, an exceptional, opera-type opening, surpassing even Mozart's openings.
    A part that always has me verging on crying is "Seht! Wohin? - auf unsre Schuld!" (Look! At what? At our fault!" with the preceding very dark modulation and chords.

      I usually sing the chorus 1 bass. Although it is possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever sung, I sometimes feel sad I was never a singer as a boy so I've never been able to sing the children's choir bit (sung here by the sopranos in the middle). I always get the shivers when they join. So simple yet magical.

    My first real encounter with classical music. Watching the movie THX1138, the end was astonishing for me. I can't describe the whole movie here, but very compact. In a future world where man are controlled by maschines, one person can escape. Leaving the underground city where he spend all his live, he climbs out of the there through a steep tunnel. And at the very end he opens the manhole cover and steps out, seeing for the first time the sun, which is going majestically down, coloring the world red and yellow. You can only see the silhouet of the man covering his eyes, and birds flying. And at the background this incredible music. Amazing!The music and image was burned in my young head and since then, I discovered the beauty of classical music.

    • @lindacowles756
      @lindacowles756 3 роки тому

      Ronnie, why do you think the THX 1138 filmmakers decided on that particular piece for that scene? The scene is about finally gaining freedom and the piece is about mourning over Christ's passion. I don't get the connection between the two. Do you? Just curious.

      G'day, Ronnie! Wow, you were introduced not only to classical music through that film, but absolutely great music by Johann Sebastian Bach from his St. Matthew Passion. He's considered by some to be the greatest composer of all time. I suppose that the reason to use that particular selection for the escape scene could be simply providing great music for a great moment. The film, as I recall, was a student film by George Lucas.

    @RealHogweed- look at what 1 Corinthians 1 to 11 says about inspiration.
    I am very certain that we can take that very literally. Gods spirit is literally present when 2 or more people decide to pray for something in Jesus's Name - see Matthew 18:19 and 18:20. I have experienced that numerous times.
    So what I am trying to say is this: It is very realistic to believe that Bach was doing the best he could to compose this music and was seriously inspired by God himself to get it done. Just like God's spirit is literally present in any church because there are multiple people present and praying.

    ah, i'd say that the indirect argument is all another story :) my point was that if this kind of music would be all a product of gods mind then we should be able to see people that never studied music theory compose this stuff. i'm sure Bach put a tremendous effort in composing his music, and then hundreds of years later people come and say: "NOPE. god did it."

However, coming back to your original post, every Christian, including Bach, would obviously affirm that “God is responsible for this” at the very least indirectly through creating this universe and sending us the Messiah (thus creating the basis of this piece) :p

  • @RealHogweed
    @RealHogweed 11 років тому +14

    i hate both the atheist and the religious comments about this music, this is the product of the sheer genious of a man, inspired by a god no more that Homers Iliad was inspired by the pagan gods. to say that god is responsible for this is an offense to bach himself, and to say this is bad only because it has a religious theme is madness. i can appreciate this, no matter if i'm atheist or not.

    • @jaikee9477
      @jaikee9477 6 років тому +7

      I'm tired of atheist comments trying to drag this divine music into their hopeless realm. Bach considered himself a humble servant to God.
      He dedicated his whole work to the glory of God. Bach said: "Where there is devotional music, God is always at hand with his gracious presence!"
      Looks like you are offending Bach.

  • @RealHogweed
    @RealHogweed 11 років тому +1

    it depends on what we intend by "inspired". of course the theme was inspired by the idea of some god. but when i wrote that cooment i was thinking about people that believe this music is a direct product of the mind of a god, with bach being merely some sort of intermediary.
