You are correct in saying that gold dome holds coal. At some point in the early 2000s Clinton city hall said that ADM cannot draw from the city grid unless it’s for emergencies, so in 2007, ADM began construction on a coal-fired power plant and a large dome from Dome Technology to store this coal. UP regularly drops off coal trains here so the dome can be replenished. The power plant would be finished in late 2008.
Red that mega coal train was awesome that is two trains and one but anyway another awesome video my friend and as always you stay safe out there and watch your back and we’ll see you on the next one
I'll bet they like winter with no barge traffic. For the bridge. Bridge must have a speed limit. Double coal was awesome. Lots of power. Seems longer going slow. Thanks Red.
It is hard to believe that coal trains like that can be replaced by natural gas trapped inside rocks! You might enjoy watching the documentary, 'Arctic Sinkholes' on UA-cam to see how. That is an impressive suspension bridge. They made sure not to obstruct the channel with that one.
Thanks for another great video. That was the longest coal train I've every seen. I think even longer then the ones out west.. Whats your guess on the number of coal cars on that one. i'm going to guess around 225. Let me know what you think... thanks again Red, n of course, Be Crazy!!!
A good way to start the day looking at the last of the Fall colors as snow is about to hit any Eastern Wisconsin. What a contrast between the older railroad bridge and the newer highway bridge. That was a great view of how huge the ADM plant has become a Clinton. The first group of scrap metal gondolas had WSOR cars so they started in Madison WI @ Alter Metals were they are taken to Janesville.where CPKC picks them up and takes them via Davis Jct to Savanna. They will wind up at the steel mill in Montpelier IA which is where all those bulkhead flats will be loaded with steel plate. That also includes the AOK. SOO. ICE cars. Then the monster coal train unknown how many on the first but 142 on the 2nd. Weston trains have at least 130 cars and We Energies went shopping for more used cars as evidenced by the ones with green ends now marked WPSX. 3 weeks ago a most unusual move using WR Energy cars on a WP&L (Alliant) train to Sheboygan. Did a triple take on that one and ironically some of the cars were.WPSX. with the blue end they were built for WP&L as EDGX the Edgewater plant in Sheboygan!
@paulbergen9114 For sure quite a contrast on the bridges. Hopefully the plans to replace the swing bridge fall through. Glad you knew about the destination of the scrap and the bulkhead cars mission. ADM is definitely huge. You know it's big when it has its own coal power plant!
If you want to know, train is likely going to the We Energies Power Plant in Oak Creek, WI. There is a lot of press about the plant and the double coal trains that go to the plant. Kenosha, WI, and Racine, WI say the trains are too long and cut the cities in half for too long as the trains roll through them. WI still has a lot of coal-fired plants.
I declare that any railroad company which puts a train longer than 7,000 feet on the rails is irresponsible to the public they serve. As a former EMS provider, I know all about waiting for trains. Suppose there had been an ambulance with CPR in progress stopped by that thing? All to save a few hours' wages. I call on Union Pacific and all railroads to have more but shorter trains and hire more people. I call on UA-camrs to support me.
Awesome Video, ! The opening of the video with the drone footage of the closing of the Union Pacific swing bridge across the Mississippi River is a terrific way to start your railfanning at Clinton, Iowa and Fulton, Illinois on 9 November 2024, Red! The CPKC manifest freight that came down the west bank of the Mississippi River after crossing the river from Savannah, Illinois was a long train as it passed under the drone. The eastbound loaded coal train looked like it could be a combination of two separate coal trains headed to two separate coal fired power plants in Wisconsin. The drone footage of that coal train was spectacular while you were able to keep the drone in the air. (Posted on 21 November 2024 at 0025 CST.)
@thomasmackowiak Thanks Thomas! Would have been nice to see that manifest along the causeway at Sabula, IA. Yep the rain cut my drone time down a bit that day.
Hello Red . Fantastic drone of the bridge very cool swing bridge . Great catch Cp KCS with Dpu 👍🏻😎Robin out

@TD_loves_IANR Thanks for the info Theodore! I wonder how many coal cars to fill that dome.
@ at least 200, I imagine…
Thanks for the drone work, it adds a whole new dimension to the visual 😁

These Swing Bridges are Modern Marvels from the Past. Very Efficient for both Boat and Railroad traffic. 🤔👍🙏

@SebastianLandrus Thanks Sebastian!
I’ve read that this bridge is scheduled for replacement. Anyone know where the new one would be located in relation to this one?
@@tommybrill9107 I believe to the North of the old one. The old CNW depot would be torn down.
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645That is tragic. That’s a beautiful building and so is the bridge.

@georgearchambault6185 You're welcome Arch man! Oh yeah well past 200 on the coal train. Plenty of blocked intersections with that one.

Heavy question for Red, how many 10’s of thousands of tons of coal was that train moving?
@jeffreyerickson3050 Boy it's a lot Jeffrey! Hopefully someone on here knows👍

How many hopper cars?
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645

Total weight for a loaded aluminum coal hopper is about 140 tons.
So do the coal cars and junk metal cars etc. have drainage holes in them for when it rains?
@nancyniewoehner7881 Good question, I would have to guess yes.
Is there still plans to replace it.
Nothin like ten thousand feet plus to mess up traffic!
@charleshagenbuch6078 I believe so. Hopefully it doesn't happen!
Good job Red. Is that you operating the drone at 12:50?
@craigzysk9666 Thanks Craig! Yep that was me👍
Actually the end of the Geneva sub.
@@iamcarrot1 Sure is.
Red. Is that Iowa coal or Illinois coal? doesn’t wind and sun produce all the electricity we need 😉
@@ferstuck37 That would be Wyoming coal. Powder River Basin.
That is good coal, clean burning and little ash, I thought for a moment it was Iowa coal. But way too much for Iowa.

@@zigman1975 That time of year again already! I may try and catch it during the day if possible👍

Red........how many cars of coal was there on that impressive train? 100 tons per cars equals =?????
As a comparison: A Great Lakes, 1000 ft MV will sail with 75,000 tons of coal on average 🤠.
