I would have to say it a bad logo. Basicly because if I saw this logo by itself and did not tell me what it was, I would have never guessed it was the Bat logo
Media literacy isn't an argument, every time I see it, its used as a rhetorical technique. A blocky bat symbol doesn't look good just because a blocky bat symbol existed in the past. The old one looked like a bat, the new one looks like a rectangle with little spikes jutting out of it
This is how I felt when my mum accidentally got me the dark knight strikes again instead of the dark knight returns for Christmas when I was a kid. Devastating stuff.
I don't understand how Disney can be so protective of their copyrights that they wouldn't let a grieving father put Spider-Man on his kid's headstone but then let's Eric Larsen do what he does.
It's too minimalistic. Just looks like some weird cloth patch. There needs to be a bit of angularity to it, at least, so it doesn't just look like a bad weld job.
"Just looks like some weird cloth patch." Wow, It's almost like it's the only kind of logo a working class city engineer could make with his salary. It's almost like the story is focusing on a real person and not a parasitic billionaire.
The middle-aged conflict: 50+ brain: "Ten years to wait? That's not long at all. I can wait." 50+ body: "Ten years to wait? All I've got is six if you ask my prostate, and my heart isn't even talking to me."
Its too meta. No one designing a bat logo would do that without the concept of the batman logo pre-existing. So not only is it ugly but it doesnt make sense in a world where Batman isnt already a thing.
T H I C C Bat logo for the T H I C C Batman, it stands out, but it's not very well defined as a bat symbol. Bruce's gorilla fingers probably aren't the best at sewing.
A Batman who has to work five days a week, while also maintaining his physical condition, and fighting crime, isn't going to work. He's not Superman, who can rattle out 200 pages in a few minutes, and has the rest of his day for fighting crime, Batman needs the freedom that being a billionaire provides.
As much as I prefer Animated Batman in general the one that always stood out to me is the Tim Burton logo, the golden shine with the bat inside it all in the classic oval which also had a nice black line border. I like how it was also able to be used for even the font with it's gold edges which helped tie the whole presentation and advertising together. I think that and Dick Tracy also inspired one of my favourite colour schemes - Black with yellow highlights. For this logo it's as simple as other people have said, if you see it on it's own it just looks like a rectangle with bits of ink where the person drawing it have came out of the lines accidentally lol. It's trying to be Frank Miller but also trying to be different with it, but by different it's just doing more Miller % on a slider.
at least Frank Millers actually still looks like a bat, the new one is just a box with some spikes on it. it’s made even worse by the fact the rest of the art actually isn’t bad but that bat symbol just sucks.
Seeing it as an axe? That makes sense. Seeing it on Batman? It looks like he shopped for Bat Suits at Temu. Also his body size makes his head look small to me? Anyone else getting that? NOw I'm just seeing him as Pinhead from the Puppet Master Film series...
Friend of mine contacted me about comics just to talk about the new logo. He was fascinated by the cartoonish Adam West direction for the Absolute book. The ear-knives and chest ax really ticked him pink. Unfortunately, the prospect of supporting an expensive ongoing turned him off to the series.
I don't like it. it's basically a straight edge rectangle with the bat ears and fingers essentially the same size. on the chart that shows the history of the bat symbol, I tend to like the blockier ones better, but all of them had curvature. they all had something that read as a bat. if you showed me the new batman symbol, out of context, and asked me what it was, I wouldn't be able to tell you. which seems like a problem.
There are some pre-Batman bat logos from other bat themed characters that is in public domain. The Bat came out four years before Batman and he had a bat logo. It has an Art-Deco kind of feel to it...that character and images are all in public domain. Why indie publishers haven't jumped on this character is a mystery to me?
It’s a BAT tle axe. That was not a dad joke. That’s what it’s actually called. My only critique about absolute Batman is that Nick Dragotta’s art looks so much better in B&W. The color is going to diminish the art like it does to Danny Earl’s Hulk art.
A bat symbol that doubles as an axe…couldn’t they have referenced a better looking axe? Even Jim Lee’s art makes it look “meh”. The design reminds me of Spider-Man’s classic big red spider on his back on the original costume. Which worked, because it was ON THE Back. And since it’s an Axe…wouldn’t it work better strapped on his back? And as a writer why continue to antagonize with TwiX? Just say it’s a design choice we think will grow on you and keep it moving with a new image or a new longline or plot synopsis for a future issue?
It's nothing to go crazy over, but it is kind of ugly and doesn't have enough detail to be recognizably a bat symbol at a glance. The Batman Returns symbol, which I'm not a big fan of either, was big and blocky, but it's still recognizably a bat.
its just dull and weird, I hated it in the movies and this is worse, the old dark knight returns one is fat too but thats the worst part of the look and only looks like that because its meant to be big old fat fucked batman like if you dragged an aspect ratio of a picture off.
Even more than The Dark Knight Returns symbol, it looks like the version of the Dark Knight Returns symbol you see in the Spawn/Batman from Wizard Magazine where the curves get taken out of the symbol. It’s like that combined with that ‘89 Legends of the Dark Knight one. Bruce Timm also draws the DKR symbol without the curves on the side.
I thought they were intentionally making it look dumb because the character is a blue collar guy who probably doesn’t have time to learn graphic design considering he’s busy with his demanding job and dangerous hobby.
I would like to see is another Marvel and DC crossover. but I am sure we will never see that again. That had some fun original characters. lol and if Mags made a original Batman, it would be pretty much Harley Quin, but trans and a murder and lol so random.
😂 ngl....that particular chunky batman logo are very hard for me to look at, maybe if it has some angling on it? Like that isn't even a bat in my eyes, its a rectangle with spikes.
Gotta disagree on this. While I like the overall design of absolute batman, I'm not fan of the logo. The dkr still reads as a bat despite being so blocky. The new one is a legit rectangle
I don't like the Fatman who waddles, the logo I don't give a crap about. He's supposed to be a ninja not a sumo wrestler. Commissioner Gordon is going to see him hiding. He's gonna drop and splat the first time he tries to glide using his cape. He's gonna need a Batmobility scooter. Did he eat Alfred and all the Robins? His biceps are making it impossible for him to breathe in that picture. Did Bruce Wayne get gout? Is he retaining water? If your calves are wider than your thighs, seek medical help. This is a plot to get Gail Simone to write Batman, only the same body type can write the character. The Joker now has so much extra material to work with, figuratively and literally. Half his utility belt slots will be taken up by insulin. The criminals will hear him coming.
I'm not against what they're trying to do with reinventing the character and taking a different angle with it, but if you didn't know this was the bat logo before, it's not the first thing I would see it as. Thus the question again becomes: who is this book going to be marketed to? It's definitely for the Batman crowd, but an already established Batman crowd, people who know that this is the Bat symbol despite it being a somewhat more obscure representation. It's not going to be a good starting book for new readers, certainly. It is Scott Snyder, so the name alone might sell a few more copies than most. But just a few. While I don't get the outrage, I don't know if it will help sell more books or not. We shall see.
This Batman logo has been driving me nuts, because I knew I’d seen it somewhere before but couldn’t think of it. Everything I was thinking of was just different enough to not really be the same, and I was starting to wonder if I was just misremembering it. But just now I was looking at Twitter, and it’s not 100% the same, but it’s like 95% the same thing; back during covid Giannis Milonogiannis did a short Batman fan comic he posted on Twitter, and his Batman symbol is extremely similar to the new Absolute Batman symbol.
We can’t comprehend how much of a game changer it was to switch up Batman’s logo in the 60s after more than 20 years. I respect them for drastically trying to shake things up, because there is precedent. It just failed in its execution
I wouldn’t say Marvel really runs on its original continuity anymore. They haven’t done line wide reboots like DC have, (although at this point they should) but everything has been rebooted by this point, and I don’t think any of the major characters really match up with their original comics. Like Iron Man was rebooted in the ‘90s during John Byrne’s Armor Wars 2 run, and then he was rebooted again in the Extremis run Warren Ellis started doing in 2005, and other stuff happened between those like Heroes Reborn. Hell, X-Men had a major reboot with the start of the Krakoa stuff; the in-universe explanation being that Moria MacTaggert used her time traveling reset powers to change things in her new do over life. The whole Secret Empire related storyline Nick Spencer did is also a Captain America reboot where you learn Captain America was always a Nazi, and before that Captain America was rebooted during Ed Brubaker‘s run on Vol. 5 where Captain America’s World War 2 time is brought more in line with Ultimate Captain America’s World War 2 time. Even Spider-Man I don’t think really matches up with his original origin outside of the broad strokes, I think his origin now is more the one from the ‘90s cartoon than the first Spider-Man comic; which are similar, but they’re different too.
Its clearly meant to be an external chestplate. Batman wears one under his costume. Its like punishers skull a centre of mass thats shielded. Its not great but it makes sense.

The design is both good and bad but I’m more concerned about the writing, Scott Snyder has been the best Batman writer in 15 years but I don’t know how good he’s been since his New 52 run
The Batman logo has changed a million times. I am giving superheroes a pass in many many cases, because there's a million takes on a million heroes. The number of takes and runs on Batman throughout the years is so immense, you can't get angry over a fat bat/axe thing. Besides, as far as US superheroes, I have always preferred different takes on them. Superman: Red Son is my favourite Superman story, for instance, as I detest the boyscout Yankee Doodle Superman.
I would have to say it a bad logo. Basicly because if I saw this logo by itself and did not tell me what it was, I would have never guessed it was the Bat logo
Exactly this, it’s just not appealing imo.
