Motocross Action Magazine tests the 2021 KTM 450SXF Factory Edition. Most of the tracks in Southern California were rained out this week so we decided to switch things up and hit some high desert rough terrain for our filming/photography day. We were able to ride Glen Helen the following day to solidify the testing process before delivering the video. The big news this year is the Bluetooth connectivity unit on the handlebars. This unit allows the owner to connect their smart phone to the motorcycle and adjust mapping, traction control, throttle response, and more. The MXA wrecking crew walks you through the details of this new technology and some of the new features on the 2021 KTM 450SXF Factory Edition.

They should make it fit in the air box or behind the numberplate. Sounds interesting, you could make a 450sxf act like a xcfw so now it’s just gears and maybe flywheel weights

Reguardless of the connectivity unit, ktm are 100% leading the way, they have the best bikes out there in stock trim off the showroom floor. They’ve got the Japanese manufacturer’s scrambling to catch up and have done for a while! Sick bikes! If ktm went to a production spring fork and worked on their suspension game a little more, they would absolutely ruin the competition!! Their golden egg though, the money! IMO is their chrome-moly steel frames! Unless the Japanese manufacturers accept defeat and go with a those materials, and similar designs they won’t catch ktm.

The real hero will be the one that gets these bikes to sound like race bikes instead of lawnmowers. Not just a loud sound but a great sound. Even the aftermarket pipes are way off sound
The only problem is if you run a different handlebar or clamp...your screwed if you want to run the updated settings.

How do you change the bars ? What do you do the Bluetooth pad on the stock bars?

why would the BT connector need to be flat, is just a wireless receiver. Have seen it relocated under the side panel and can press button which is vertical, through a hole in the sidepanel

The cellphone integration wouldn't bug me if at least it were unobtrusive and out of the way unless you want it.
But having it central with a lit up button on a little 'dashboard' is just not what I want in dirtbike. Do NOT want to play with my phone (pairing it etc) when I am out to ride.
That's me also? I don't even want my cell phone near me when I'm out riding!
Just more gimmicks to justify over pricing the crap out of bikes and keeping any of us normal people from ever having anything new or nice or even participating in this sport. They are going to price this sport right out of existence.

@MXA, when will we see your 2021 450 Shootout? Every other MX Media Co has publish theirs.
Working on it still! It's scheduled to be in the April issue of MXA and the video is coming soon still. We took longer because we wanted to get a full shootout with the Suzuki and GasGas bikes.
You can buy the my KTM connectivity unit by itself it’s just on back order until later this month.
I have one on my 2020 Rockstar 450, retail it is $249 and it needs to be "initialized" at the dealer where they plug it into the computer and give it the VIN and enable it, it should be off back order now. I have not gotten the bike to the dealer yet to have it turned on but the install was super easy.

They are saying these 4 strikes need a valve adjustment after only ten hours. WTH is that all about? Why? I would appreciate any info on this because I can ride 10 hours in 2-3 days and if that’s the case I would get a two stroke
I got a connectivity unit on my 2021 and it works! No need for the factory edition, 2021 are supported
I don't understand why the mounting position of that black box needs to be level to talk to the bike and phone? Why wouldn't this be something they mounted under the seat or behind the mask?

You didn't! We waited until we could get the Suzuki and GasGas models before doing the shootout. The full article will be in our April issue of the magazine and the video is still coming soon

@@carlosclass787 they try and put 100 hours on each bike before releasing the shootout, unlike every other magazine, mxa does extensive testing instead of just hucking a rider on it for a couple sessions, the goal is to have each bike experience its first mechanical or component failure

@@pilsnerfamilymotorsports3275 well we all know the yamaha is pretty much bullet proof! Dont need to wait 100 hrs do we? Ktm will have its sprocket issues coming loose etc. Honda will probably over heat unless theyve fixed that problem lol.

You mean a ECU? Or the FCU? For certain things it might be nice to have it. Definitely not required though.

I’m pretty sure they come with Penkle transmission’s as standard! I don’t know if their titanium but that’s race team level stuff.

THATS A LIE ! I have a ‘21 model and I bought the connectivity unit from my dealer no back order for 249 really simple install and no it does not need to be programmed
these guys love to flip flop on what they say. one day its suspension is best when its brand new next day it needs 10hrs to break in
WHEN THE THROTTLE RESPONSE IS ALL THE WAY UP DOES IT MAKE IT FASTER THAN THE STANDARD MAP 2? DOES IT GIVE IT A YAMAHA HONDA PUNCH OUT THE CORNERS
Your caps lock is stuck.
With throttle response up it feels more aggressive than map 2, but not a major difference. The app gives you a lot more adjustability to meter the power and tame it down than it does to make the more aggressive.

just sit the pad on ur seat or sum where level to tune it u dont have to carry it around with u only to tune it

STOP THE AIR FORK! No motor sport uses air suspension for a reason, its not consistent. KTM's are fantastic and ahead of the curve in almost every way but would rather spend my money on a bike that has great suspension out of the box. Barcia is testing the air shock because its cheaper to make and therefore they can sell you a bike that costs them less to make. it can be advertised as being "lighter and more adjustable" but consistency wins races and keeps you safe and air suspension is NOT consistent. Please KTM stop with the air fork its been around for 40 years and there is a reason no one uses it.
I agree KTM's cone valve forks are the best imo. The best option with their air forks is to send them to Coppersmith for a Ohlins shock on one side & air in the opposite fork.
@@jeff40 Definitely lots of ways to fix them, bought a new 250sx in 2018, loved everything about it except the forks. Got my suspension valved by the best in my area and the damping was much improved but still hated at the end of the moto when the track was rough and the forks were harder. If I ran lower pressure at the beginning of the day they would be too soft at the beginning when you need to sprint, then at the end of the moto when you're trying to settle into your pace and the track is rougher they are getting stiffer. Should have done the spring conversion but will go with a yamaha or Kawi next so I don't have to spend 2k$ on suspension on a new bike.

@@koreysvardal3302 i own 4 strokes and 2 strokes. But these new modern 4 stroke machines are next level. May not have the fun factor and explosiveness as the 2 stroke. But the way they handle on track is much better. They stick to the track alot better.

So the factory edition is an overpriced machine that you could get stock with a different ignition and get the same result? Got it.
For us "over the top" riders we want performance and design. Mostly yes your right, though for some of us we love the beautiful trademark of redbull graphics on our bikes. Orange anodized wheels, with a cover, a better grip seat, plus the difference between a model specific header pipe with an advanced resonator (stock) & a $1000 Akrapovic set up (factory) & more. Also don't forget your ECU from twisted development, the KTM will get 4 maps on the fly instead of 2 then an optional 6 more, its all you need!
Rate KTM last cause KTM is a ugly bike.
