Nice video , like the way you count to 5 on the power addition on the take off roll , also you did a great job setting up the radios for the 2nd leg , short leg means things happen quick and you planned for that .. well done on the cross country , good luck with the rest of your training .
Counting to five was the first thing I learned a few years ago and never changed it. Most instructors did not want you jamming in the power. Plus the Diamond gets a little wishy washy when first giving power, it gives me a chance to get established on my rudder inputs. Thanks for watching!
I once landed at Dulles, runway 1R, catching the first taxiway off the active. I asked for instructions to the FBO and was told "Taxi straight ahead for 2 miles and turn left!"
Congratulations, for a student pilot you handle the communications like a professional. Your flying is very smooth, you should if not have already take the IFR course.
Hey! Great job! Lots of issues came up that you handled very well. I’ve got 35 years of flying behind me and I’ll swear the flying is always easy compared to what happens on the ground. Can’t review and study an airport diagram too much. Plan out different scenarios in your head, and with some experience the routings start to become somewhat predictable and less of a surprise. Even airports like Ohare and Newark can be figured out. ATC works for you, always keep a friendly relationship with them and don’t be afraid to use them when you need them. They are after all the operators of the environment that we are just visitors to. They benefit just like you do when things go simple and smooth. I’ve flown with a thousand plus pilots at all kinds of experience levels and skill levels, military and civilian both, and I can promise you that what I see in your videos is the making of a very capable, confident, skilled pilot. Your already there, so continue to forge ahead and get more experience. It’s looking great! If you get a chance, by now you are ready to add in some aerobatic experience. If you really want to push your flight skills to the next level, find some time and money to get a few hours upside down. I can tell from your personality that you have the mental and physical toughness to give that a thorough try. It will greatly improve everything you’ve come to flying for...stick and rudder skills, confidence, maturity, decision making and planning, the list goes on. And it gives you a reason to get up in the air more, and will give you a lot of credibility over your peers.
This will be something I will be doing soon and watching you was encouraging. I am sure tiny mistakes are made by everyone. Let’s face it, there’s a lot to multitask in an airplane so it’s easy to make a mistake. Great job and thanks for sharing.
I got my PPL in 1981 and still fly and love flying. I flew today in fact. But... I have yet to make a flight that I would call perfect. The point is that you did fine and @Totally Random will too.
Never apologize for taking as much runway you can get your hands off. If your engine failed on takeoff, you'd be glad you had the extra few hundred feet.
I took my initial flight training in 1991 in the Houston TX area, I STILL consider myself a student pilot! Remember: if you can't do it safely you shouldn't do it at all!! Great job!
Ma'am, you have my utmost respect and admiration. You did everything perfectly. And you were still cool even when you had that taxi mix up. Your instructor did an excellent job. I LOVE everything about your flying. You even spotted the Cessna on finals just when you were about to turn base. 👍
Thanks for the adventure! ....in hot weather I really have to be mindful of not dehydrating myself....a little rest and a mocha latte in Ft. Meyers would have gone a long way. Fly safe. :-)
Love watching your videos they are so honest we do not always have to be perfect just safe. This one trip was evidence of several non perfect pilots, keep showing the way it should be done.Congrats on a great cross country!
Safety is my number one priority. I was actually a safety director for 20 years for water skiing events, so it's always in the back of my mind. I know other pilots have their mistakes and don't make fun of that, but it makes us feel a little better that others make mistakes as well. Thanks for liking and watching and by the way, ignore my imperfect typos in the captions too.
@@LarjoskiFlyingAway The Piper is a hot aircraft also and it only has one door on the passenger side that I can not reach. It's a sauna. The C-172 is the coolest airplane as it's a high wing with big windows and great ventilation.
This was a great entertaining AND educational video. Thank you for sharing your mistakes as well as the other pilots. This helps the rest of us know what to do (and not do) and helps to remind us that none of us are perfect. I'm a few hours from my checkride so really love seeing all the new pilots out there. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Laurie, great job with the numerous obstacles thrown at you. I just did my 1st solo pattern (KLNA) this past Monday and I'm doing my 1st solo x-country tomorrow to (KPHK). Everyone told me, once you do your first solo, your confidence goes through the roof. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Thanks, Glenn
Yes, after the solo there is a certain liberty but also a lot of emotions after you spend so much time in the cockpit with your instructor. I made a video about those feelings.
Such an awesome feeling and experience when you do your 1st solo x country flight. 10 yrs ago while watching a football game a paragliding ad came on. I thought damn that'd be cool to do. I called the local airport to see if they teach people to fly. a cfi said come on over and I'll take you up flying right now. went up for the discovery flight and she gave me the controls at 5000 ft. I was hooked. she said forget the paragliding stuff and just become a real pilot. we landed and I signed up for my sports pilot license. 6 weeks later I was licensed and couldn't believe I was flying allover the country. in 2017 I decided to get my ppl and sadly couldn't get past the medical certificate. I kept at it from 2017 and on until 2 weeks ago I finally got my medical certificate. I am now working on getting my PPL and can't wait to do my solo x country. thanks for posting your experience and congrats.
Hopefully. My GoPro audio fails all the time so it’s been frustrating. I do have something I am working on for my check ride experience. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for posting this. I recently made a number of taxi faux pas on my second solo from an airport I'd never flown from before. It's comforting to know that others have had struggles with early solos. Fly safe.
What a fantastic video! I was there with you all the way and I don't mind saying that I was welling up as you came in to land at "home"! You did amazingly well. I do my flying on a computer - my way of having the dream that you have and that I cannot have! But I love watching videos like this and hearing how you learned and watching you perform your skills. Thank you for sharing your experiences. May I send my best regards across the Pond from the UK. Lee
This took me back as I did my long cross country in Florida too, but I did mine back in 1979. Back then we had to get at least one signature from someone at each airport in our logbooks. I guess that was not unusual because all of the people who signed my log book wrote something similar, as if they had done it many times in the past. Each wrote something like, "landed solo at ____" then their name, date and time. I read those names every once in a while and wonder what they're doing today. Thanks for the memories..
12:40 It's hard to re-find your focus immediately after landing, especially with going to a heightened state for that radio-silent cessna. If I have the time, I'll pull off onto the apron, kill the engine and just step out for 5min. It's not much but it can really clear your head. Great flight. Fabulous radio work. Inspiring, honestly. Makes me realize I should do more flight following to get the practice in.
This corona time , will be remembered as the period your flying videos were discovered. A true honest to goodness demo of what is like to fly in FL, my new home turf, after AZ. You presented a great info, in a very humble way, your effort in making the video is being appreciated. time to catch up on the rest of them. Just say no to Corona!
More videos to come! It is an unfortunate time for all of us. But, being a skill you can do alone, we can still fly the sky. Airports are empty. We pack a lunch, sit on our wing and have a sandwich. It is a strange feeling. I fly with a friend who owns his own Cirrus.
I just started watching the video again but I have to say you handled the jerk with ATC very well. Didn’t seem to bother you. What a loser he is. You did great! Hats off
Ok Laurie, I'm hooked... new subscriber, and it only took 1.5 videos to do the job. Aviation UA-camrs all bring their unique personalities and observations to their video work, and despite being a fan of several of the heavy hitters, it is clear you've got the right stuff. Please keep them coming - I'll be there.
Only thing I would add to a spectacular performance is that while scanning for traffic and looking/planning your approach from Left Base to final (Naples) is that you take a few peeks to your right as well. Might be someone coming straight in to final from your right hand side! Best regards and keep the blue side up!!
That’s good advice and I usually do. Keep in mind the videos are for entertainment and a lot of scenes are edited out. Naples is also a towered airport but it’s still good to be vigilant.
To use a runway complete is always a good idea. it gives you security to do things always the same way. and nobody would laugh. my teacher said, always use the hole runway! Well done! was sweating with you.
Took my first ride on Saturday with a buddy of mine who is a pilot. i gotta say it was an amazing experience . ive been on youtube for the past few days just watching videos like these. i really think i want to start training to become a pilot. i hope things work out and that i will be able to become a pilot eventually.
Congratulations!!! Super proud of you. Great job on your radio calls. I can’t say anything nice about the guy you spoke to at your home airport before departing, but not every can be polite. You looked very happy/confident up there. Hopefully you’re happy with your accomplishments. Stay safe!!
That was a beautiful solo x country. Lots of complexity and you kept your cool while taxiing all over the place. You are going to be a great pilot. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you Laurie for this video, this exactly what I'm currently training to do next!😁 then check ride afterwards. And yes multitasking in the cockpit can be very daunting at first I.e checking multiple frequencies, atis while listening to atc or other traffic...awesome job! You handled yourself well 👍
Watching you Laurie, makes me want to get my own Van's RV-12 E-LSA and my sport pilot license. That's some really busy airspace control you have there, being followed and handed off to different ATC's. Have 100 hrs of co pilot in the past 15 months in a retired gents RV-12, and still learning something new, every flight. I think you did well. Also a good example of after the 2nd leg, make a complete stop, take a break, have a soda or water or electrolytes like Gatorade, before you start your last leg, and a chance to relax and clear your head. You did great!
We do have a busy airspace here. A lot of workload. Get your license, it is an amazing skill. I ride co-pilot a lot in a Cirrus. I learn something every flight. Thanks for watching.
Hydration is so important. I didn't see you drink much at all. You show great airmanship and are learning that others screw up. Taxiways are flipin awful. You guys have big airfields having flown at some of your bigger stuff. I wouldn't worry too much about your orthodox methods. You are safe. This is called experience, it isn't free but it can be enjoyable as long as you laugh too :-)
Thanks for watching. Yes I do drink water and take hydration on every flight. The video is edited and parts are cut out. We’ve learned to carry a water bottle around all the time in Florida.
About 20 minutes in: It's easy for a new pilot to get task saturated. I've been there too. I know I've annoyed more than a few controllers and fellow pilots but, we learn by our mistakes, some of them very memorable. The more you fly the easier it will get. Good job....
Good for solo PIC. Great job at locating and scanner for traffic. Don't worry about other planes or pilots things, you just fly the plane as you did. Great Job on your long solo flight. I am also student pilot finished my short solo flight. Keep learning...
A few times, I had to go back to "Fly the Airplane" it was the first thing I learned on the second lesson when the CFI slightly opened the door in flight.
Thank you so much for this video! About to do my long XC and I feel like I've run into so many "out of left field" situations that I'm not prepared for. Your radio calls were excellent. I also agree flight following has been a great confidence booster to learn how to talk better.
You will be surprised how alert you can be when you need to and are able to handle the situations that come up. Once you get in the air I have a feeling your nervousness will go away. Good luck. 🍀
I know this isn’t for instruction but it’s very helpful to watch this. I am so nervous about the day I have to solo. I’m sure by time I’m done with my training I’ll be less nervous but as of today I’m scared
I was pulling for you all the way. You handled every situation very well. Happy your journey went well. Always learn more by doing rather than in the classroom. Well done 👍
I thought you did great! I learned a lot by watching you handle the unforeseen changes. I would sit in you right seat anytime. Your concentration and your video com was great.
I am late so you may never see this but your humility is only exceeded by apparent competence. Thank you for sharing examples of both. I've been scouring YT for DA40 videos as I have become very enamored. Glad I found you. 2 Questions: a) given FL heat and that lovely canopy, is it possible to do any ground work with the canopy cracked open? I know you like the heat, but I would be soaking before runup with the cabin at 60F. b) Given 3 more years of flying since, are you still flying the DA40?
Your video was inspirational. I'm currently in the military and deployed and only have like 4 hours, but your video has me ready to reach solo phase and way to stay calm even when the pressure set in. You got another subscriber, keep the aviation vids coming.
Thanks for the ride along, I wasn't nervous at all. The communications with ground controllers was just too much for me to finish my private pilot training. That and the money part. You're a fine pilot. I would fly with you anywhere. Happy landings.
I listened to live ATC for one year before I started training. I was secretly listening to my boyfriend that was getting his license. I can't tell you how much that helped and to this day I still listen to it while I work or just making dinner. Money, yes. I just looked at my budget and said this is how much I can spend per month on flight training and only went once or twice a month. I saved and saved and it took me 2.5 years and last week I passed my checkride!
@@LarjoskiFlyingAway I thought about buying a handheld radio from Sportys to hear my local ATC. Just never did. Now I'm looking at retirement and I'll spend my time building and flying RC airplanes. Congrads on getting your licenses.
I've seen this experience BOTH from my own AND from others who were with me when we earned our certificate many MANY years ago. It's said many times and the more you hear it, the more you understand. . .always stay ahead of the airplane. Play chess not checkers. . .think two/three moves ahead. Another cliche' I hear is that pilots, through repetition, should have rhythm and know the rhythm. Flying essentially means doing the same thing over and over and over again that it's commonplace and you're projecting out to plan B if plan A goes out the window and plan B is reality. Lot of words yes. If this was your "first" long cross country solo. . .the words "student pilot" is NOT an embarrassment to you. It's a notification/ that you're in the learning mode, and you don't have that rhythm yet. Use those words to get help from the ground to assist you. It's our weakness of human nature to help others. Adding "student pilot" to your call sign will help with that support. ATC love good pilots. . .hate pompous ones. "Student pilot" give you the benefit of the doubt you wanna be a good one. Good video. Great "thinking out loud."
Great job, Laurie. I’m an old(er) private pilot who took years to get my ticket (life and all that), then ended up with a very long pause (more of that life stuff). Finally flying again in an archer. So, in reality, I’m not too terribly far ahead of you. You’re doing wonderfully and it’ll be all worth it.
My point, which I actually forgot to make (did I mention “old”) is to not let yourself get flustered. Make a little goof or flub a transmission... well, take a breath, collect your thoughts and then fix it and move on. Don’t let yourself feel rushed. “Fast is slow. Smooth is fast.” Take an extra 15 seconds to review the taxi diagram in place. They’ll wait.
I'm in my first year of law school, so I don't have time right now, but as soon as things slow down I plan to start learning to fly too! You're flying the plane I hope to train in.
Going to be going on my long solo soon so this gave me somewhat of a preview of what’s to come. Thanks for sharing! Oh and I found that when I tell them I’m a student pilot, ATC tends to laugh a little bit less.😁
I did tell the tower at Naples it was my first cross country, but really it was my second. I did a short XC a while ago. Good luck on your solo. You will find it a wonderful and exciting experience.
@@LarjoskiFlyingAway oh, I used to have a lake boat back in jersey and did some wakeboarding and would have been world renowned if I didn't suck at it.
It must be amazing to be able to from city/town to city/town. I saw one guy that brought a twin engine plane for better speed and got his instrument rating so that he could fly his commute instead of having to drive several hours back and forth.
Awesome video. A little more eventful than my student pilot long cross country but I think you handled it well. I know you beat yourself up on the ground radio work at one airport but as a whole your radio work is very good! Thanks for sharing it and the learnings. Just getting ready for my check ride and learn something on every flight but it's also nice to learn from others as well. Thanks!
Great video, congrats und the xc solo 2.5 years ago :D I think even though you are not a jet, you should (if you can) still always use full length as the extra rwy at some point could become useful in emergencies. Maybe something to think about :)
Wow! This makes my X-CNTY solo look so easy! I flew from KADS to KATA and met ham radio friends for lunch. I ran into go-pro overheat issues and lost some footage as well..
I've lost a lot of footage from the GoPro shutting off from overheating. But the DA40 has a glass cockpit and the Florida sun does not help. Glad you thought it was easy, I felt like I ran a full marathon.
Great job or your radio calls while still being a student pilot. Your right about the about talking to atc. The more you talk to atc the easier and more confident you are chatting with them.
I enjoyed your video. It was nice to see a very positive person in command. I'm not a pilot, but I think you are awesome. Very beautiful air plane! Is that a parachute I see above you?

I really enjoyed the video. Nice job with managing the flight and getting things set up. Very good radio work too. Remember, hydrate!
Being nervous is normal. Let’s us know how you did!
I was pulling for you all the way. You handled every situation very well. Happy your journey went well. Always learn more by doing rather than in the classroom. Well done 👍
thanks for posting the video mistakes and all. It helps as I prepare for my solo. Awesome job getting it all done responsibly and safely.
Good luck on your solo. A day you will never forget. I am happy you appreciate the videos!
Congratulations 🍾🎈
wow I’m getting training to fly my solo cross-country.
You are so secure, calm.
My admiration for you 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I thought you did great! I learned a lot by watching you handle the unforeseen changes. I would sit in you right seat anytime. Your concentration and your video com was great.
I appreciate that!
You sounded so relaxed on the comms! Impressive all around. Nicely done. About to do my first solo cross country, so thanks for doing this!
Good luck. Update us on how it goes.
I am late so you may never see this but your humility is only exceeded by apparent competence. Thank you for sharing examples of both. I've been scouring YT for DA40 videos as I have become very enamored. Glad I found you. 2 Questions:
a) given FL heat and that lovely canopy, is it possible to do any ground work with the canopy cracked open? I know you like the heat, but I would be soaking before runup with the cabin at 60F.
b) Given 3 more years of flying since, are you still flying the DA40?
Yep, I would overheat in a heartbeat.
Your video was inspirational. I'm currently in the military and deployed and only have like 4 hours, but your video has me ready to reach solo phase and way to stay calm even when the pressure set in. You got another subscriber, keep the aviation vids coming.
Keep on staying motivated. It can be tough sometimes. Thanks for subscribing!
ma'am the final landing was spot on!! :D
Another great video Laurie!
Thank you!
Congrats! What an amazing accomplishment! Loved ur story! Look forward to more vids!
This is making me feel so much better, I’m about to do my xc solo. Thank you!
You will do great I’m sure.
This is awesome, thank you for posting your experience. Im about to go into flight school with ATP Flight school and this is super encouraging!!
Good luck and congratulations for taking the first step.
Thanks for the encouragement. I know it will all be worth it.
They’ll wait.
never wrong if you want to go to the end of the runway before taking off. one time you might want that length. it's nice to have it if you do want it.
Maybe try this flight on X-Plane 11 tonight. Thanks for posting this video
I am looking at my solo cross country within the next couple of months. This was interesting! I think you did a great job!
Have fun!
You handled the flight very well. Thanks for sharing. (Just found your channel and subscrbed)
Thanks for subscribing. I feel the pressure now to create new videos :)
@@LarjoskiFlyingAway LOL - yes ma'am. Expectations are very high!
Great video, you did great! Also it brings back memories.
h2oski1200 Thanks. Based on your UA-cam name, do I know you?
Laurie Lindsey hhmmmm, don’t think so.
h2oski1200 thought you may b a water skier. I traveled the world competing and know most skiers.
@@LarjoskiFlyingAway oh, I used to have a lake boat back in jersey and did some wakeboarding and would have been world renowned if I didn't suck at it.
Really enjoyed your hair in this excellent video. Please do one describing your hair care routine and how you handle these dry conditions.
It must be amazing to be able to from city/town to city/town. I saw one guy that brought a twin engine plane for better speed and got his instrument rating so that he could fly his commute instead of having to drive several hours back and forth.
you look confident! Great job! 👏👏👏👏
I think you did a fantastic job!
Thanks!
Wishing you a great checkride! I did pass my checkride last month and will be sharing my experience soon.
@@LarjoskiFlyingAway thanks, Laurie. Mine's tomorrow!
What a nice video. Congrats on the flight!!
Looks like it was a bumpy day. Nice work.
Great video, congrats und the xc solo 2.5 years ago :D I think even though you are not a jet, you should (if you can) still always use full length as the extra rwy at some point could become useful in emergencies. Maybe something to think about :)
That was really encouraging. I hope mine will be as good as yours soon. Good job Girl!! Congrats!!
Wow great job I can’t believe that was your solo amazing
Gave a like as soon as saw that you didnt edit out the start up woes lol
u r so very nice to all in your world, also with this vid i feel your confidence, and tha makes me belive in me. tnx!
Great Job, keep up the good work... I enjoy watching your videos, it is like sitting on that right seat for free :)
Francois Kassis Thanks for riding along. Good thing I cut out a lot of footage or you would be riding in the right seat for a long time. 😊
@@LarjoskiFlyingAway Absolutely not a problem, thank you lady.
Great flight and video. I would like to fly with you! You are doing a great job... Awesome.
Totally with you. It was tough and hectic, and mentally full for the ealier long CX when we were student! But good job! You made it.
Loved this. Great job staying ahead of the airplane.
Excellent! You did great!, you have inspired me to go ahead.
Do it! 😊
Congratulations Laurie..Have fun flying girl :)
Great video! I'm currently working on my ppl and this was helpful. You did a great job!
Great job! I started my journey mid 2019. Then COVID-19 hit. I'm going to start things up again next year! I was learning in a Diamond DA-20.
Nice radio work !
Congrats...inspirational video.
Great job. congratulations.
