  • The process of installing a new meter is achieved by the utility company crimping the gas line first, using a hydraulic crimper to shut off the flow. The gas line is then cut and a new length and riser installed by welding the two pipes together. One of the more interesting parts is after the connection is made, the crimp will need to be “Re-rounded”
This is achieved by heating up the pipe with gas in it to high heat and then pressing against the crimp to round out the pipe. The gas will not explode, even though there is extremely high heat being applied to the pipe. The gas will expand in the pipe and if there is Poly pipe being connected to the metal line, the metal will need to cool off first.

1 thing i dont understand how can you heat the pipe thats full of flammable gas inorder to reshape it round i assume the heat is to prevent cracking but the heat induced i dont understand that

They shut the gas off before starting.

+BA STUFF The gas is crimped off for the initial weld connection. Then the gas pipe crimp is opened up live with high heat and the hydraulic tool.
Although the pipe is red hot with heat it does not ignite the gas. It expands the gas within the pipe until it cools. This is a long tried and proven method by utility companies.

      Look up: Triangle of Fire.
There is no oxygen/air in the pipe, only gas.
As long as there is no oxygen/air, there is no ignition of the hot gas.
