  • Bopie has a special order for a pear shaped, plum colored, lab created sapphire. One of her customers has requested a very special ring that deserves a very special gemstone. Who else better for the job than our very special lapidary, Mike! Watch as award winning gem cutter, Michael Sackos, facets this color changing corundum into the “Compear” design by Robert Strickland. You can find this design at facetdiagrams.org. In this video, Mike also goes over how to transfer a pear shaped gemstone, which can be a tricky task for newer gem cutters.

    I’ve seen that Strickland did a good amount of pear designs. The one thing that I’ve noticed is that the most designs do a lot of brilliant cuts.
    I will admit that stone looks great and surprised that lab created corundum can be color change. I should see getting some.

      I agree about Robert's designs. His designs are all well thought out. You may want to also look for lab created Alexandrite, which is available. It is a color change. However, in my experience, there is much more demand for Lab Ruby or Blue Sapphire than for Alexandrite. But maybe that is just in my market.

    As far as pears go - I like FVS-130 for sapphire. It has the crushed ice effect.

      I'm not sure of FVS-130...I looked around, but didn't see it. I do know that any 'FVS' gem diagram is from Fred Van Sant and there are a few FVS diagrams in the Facetdiagrams dot org website. From what I have seen, FVS diagrams are very well designed.

      Thanks. It's difficult to show the final piece of jewelry when it is a special order. However, I am planning on a quick video at the end of the year, showing the jewelry created with stones I have cut.

    Another excellent tutorial Mike 👍. Do you cut the pavilion facets first before the girdle facets in order to give you room to work with? Thank you in advance.

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry

      For this design, I cut the pavilion facets that cut to a center point first and then the facets of the girdle that correspond to those pavilion facets so that I could set the width of the stone. Then I cut the rest. I cut the pavilion facets first as they help to align the girdle facets.

    I have cut some Steele designed pears - I like the ECED method pears and my students like the Jeff Graham pear designs. Jeff’s designs are a very introduction to do pears and the technical challenges they present. Mike where can I get a solid boule? Thanks

      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry  4 місяці тому +2

      Thanks. I came across the lab created (flame fusion) Ruby boule by accident, and bought it up right away. I haven't seen any others, but I am sure they are available from time to time. Just reach out to me on Face Book and I'll give you the info on where I got this boule...but again, the vendor doesn't have any right now.

    Nice! Saw the post in faceting texhnical and I reckon you’ve covered the issues really well.
    PS
    The faceting diagram was for RI 1.54.. did you change the angles?

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks. No, I didn't need to change angles. I ran the diagram through GCS with my gem material and the brightness actually improved, so no need to change angles.

    Good job...❤
    Tell me pls.. do u prepolish table before the crown?
    Or you prepolish a finish polish at last?
    Or it depends on gem form and quality?
    Thank u

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry  4 місяці тому +2

      99% of the time I cut and polish the table last. But there is are situations where I will cut and polish the table before the rest of the crown. Those situations are where i don't quite have enough space or maybe just exactly enough space to cut the crown. In those situations I may cut/polish the table before polishing in the rest of the crown so I can make the facets on the crown just touch the table. Often in these cases I have to adjust the angles in the crown slightly. Short answer - I cut/polish the crown before the table.

      @@BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry thank u very much...
      As for me.. I do the same all stones but emeralds , bcs a lot of trouble can be on the table surface..
      So, sometimes, I have to deepen the hight of the crown and correct the angles of crown(((
      Thanks again
