    This is a really good comparison to make and I love this channel because it's more realistic than the big UA-camrs. I built for a friend a Dell Optiplex 7010 with a i7-3770 and an RTX 2060. The reasoning for this was a GPU demanding game such as Dead By Daylight which, on ultra, still runs at ~70-80% usage in game and only ~50% usage on the CPU. Again great tests for most people but look up the game you want to play because the non-optimized titles will suck GPU usage up a lot.

    You can definitely put a GTX 1070 or equiv. in an OEM system if you get one with an i7 (and upgrade the PSU). I've purchased a few in the past with RAM, HDD and Windows installed for under $150 with an i7, typically a 2600 or 3770. Might bottleneck a 1660ti still due to clock speed, but not nearly as badly as that i5.

    Those 1% and 0.1% low figures can be improved if the 3570 is replaced with a 3770 ( since both of them use the same socket ) and the extra amount of threads in the 3770 is definitely gonna bring out the full power of the 1660ti which the 3570 wasn't able to 😊

    I put together a gaming rig for my step son out of a 9010 and it has been doing really well. I used 16 gigs of DDR 3 ram and an RX 560. it has the I5 3570 in it and seems really well balanced. He can play pretty much everything on high setting in 1080 and stay at or above the 60 FPS mark. I have been so impressed by it that I am working on a similar set up for my other step son but with a 9020 using an I5 4690.

  • @bill_clinton697
    @bill_clinton697 5 років тому +10

    I'd disagree. You should not pair a GTX 1660ti in a Dell OptiPlex/HP Compaq/Lenovo ThinkCentre with a Core i5 or below. A Sandy Bridge i7, on the other hand, should be powerful enough to handle the GTX 1660ti without bottlenecking it.
    Here is my rule of thumb for upgrading old OEMs.
    i7 -> GTX 1080 non-ti for 1440p or higher, GTX 1070 for 1080p
    i5 -> GTX 1060 6 GB
    i3 -> GTX 1060 3 GB or GTX 1050 ti
    Pentium -> GT 1030
    Celeron -> upgrade to at least i3 + GTX 1050 ti.

    • @bill_clinton697
      @bill_clinton697 5 років тому +2

      I watched the video. In there, you said that the 1660ti isn't a good fit with your OptiPlex 9010, which in its current configuration (i5-3570), its not a good idea. If you upgrade the i5 to an i7, it should not bottleneck the GTX 1660ti. The price difference between the OptiPlex 790/990 with an i5-2400 and an i7-2600 isn't that big, about $40 difference. If you spend this extra $40 to get the i7, you will get a superior gaming experience.
      But yes, I agree that the GTX 1660ti should NOT be paired with any Kaby or worse i5. My secondary PC is a Dell OptiPlex 790, it originally had an i5-2400, which was a great pairing with the RX 480 (basically the AMD version of the 1060 for yall that don't know PC hardware), but ever since I upgraded the CPU to an i7-2600k, the GPU is bottlenecking the CPU.
      Also, for any of them PC noobies out there looking for a cheap OptiPlex/ThinkCentre gaming PC, spend the extra to get a i7, its 100% worth it. Its enough to play today's games with ease and will prepare you for the future, when games move on from 4c/4t. You might as well spend the extra $40-60 now instead of waiting and spending $100 later on upgrading your OptiPlex/ThinkCentre.

      The challenge is the BIOS will complain if you change fans because it expects them to spin at a particular speed with a particular voltage, so much of the value of switching cases (using better fans, CPU cooler) comes with the cost of having to hit F1 every time you boot. Also, the power button has a non-standard connector. You may get the board to work with a standard power switch if you get the right pins, but you lose the diagnostic amber flashing on the power button. It's an interesting project, but much of the value of these machines is being able to use the case.

Doom, RE7, Assassins Creed Odyssey, and a few others I've tested out, even on Ultra. And runs perfectly quiet, temperatures stay low as well. Now more CPU intensive games will probably lag a lot. But I have an X and PS4 Pro for 3rd person games, which I don't perfer on PC anyway. Incredible what the OLD CPU can run. Same tower though. ;o) $125 perfect refurb off of ebay. Wouldn't mind trying the 3770 though. Would probably put a lot of new builds to shame. Also I'm using windows 8, because I hate windows 10, it's a resource hog!!

    I don't think a GTX 1660Ti makes sense in any system. Here in the UK you can get a RTX 2060 for just £40 more than a 1660Ti, bear in mind I am referring to the cheapest models of each here and so the ones a budget builder would go for. The 2060 just makes so much more sense, you don't have to use the RTX features if you don't want to but they are there if you ever change your mind.

Though i got an i9900k 32Gb too (1300€ without graphics), meant to replace it, i still use the Optiplex more in daily work since i use the i9 mostly for rendering. The only thing which sucks is the extremely noisy DVD while booting.

  • @DomRivers67
    @DomRivers67 5 років тому

    Those third gen i5's are 1060/RX 570/580 card machines, however some of those Optiplex ran 3770's which will run OK on the 1070/1660ti class card without bottlenecking too badly at all especially, funnily enough, at the higher than 1080 resolutions. A 1440 will put much more pressure on the GPU, proportionally than the CPU, so the lows will probably rise a touch, along with a drop in highs making, at least the percentile differences better.
    If on a real budget, try and find a 4770/4790 Optiplex, a bit more expensive but they'll handle this class of cards much better

    Well I mean, the reason why it wasn't the best experience was because he never upgraded the CPU, If he changed it to an i5 9400f, this machine would be a killer. Speaking of which this is actually what I'm doing for my pc build, I'm grabbing an Optiplex and I'll gradually upgrade it over time as I get more money for it. I think the first parts I'll have to upgrade though is going to be things on the motherboard like the CPU and RAM. The reason for this is so that at least I have a good performing computer overall while I save for the GPU, PSU, and more storage.

    Thanks for making this video! I agree that the GTX 1660Ti does not belong in an OEM desktop. I would say that a 1060 max is what you should put in one of those though probably only a 1050Ti or RX 570. Could you benchmark the GTX 1660Ti with the Ryzen 3 1200? I was wondering if I should upgrade to the 1660Ti because I have a Ryzen 3 1200 and RX 570 though my 570 is fine for now. With my build I actually get the same Assassin's Creed benchmarks as you do in your OEM/1660Ti benchmarks. Though in battlefield 5 if I have very low ping I get a stable 60fps on medium settings but high settings is only 30-40fps though I think my CPU is bottle-necking the GPU.
