In this video I talk about a carpet re stretching job I did in Galt California.
This home is only 5 years old and the carpet started developing wrinkles
about a year after it was installed. It was still under warranty so
someone came out to get rid of a few ripples only in the downstairs area,
and their definition of 'carpet stretching' was to use a kicker and staple into the tack strips.
Obviously that didn't work so the homeowner had me come out and give an estimate.
I'm always sad to see this situation.
When a homeowner buys a brand new house that is not cheap and gets the short end of the stick because either the builder didn't pay their installer enough or the installer just doesn't give a damn about the quality of their work.
That's where I come in, someone that does give a damn about the quality of their work and cares about the long term end result for the customer.
Most of the wrinkles were in the main hallway section
but the customer wanted all the areas stretched.
There was furniture moving on the job and I had to stretch
the length and the width in each room, which makes moving the furniture and using the power stretcher more difficult.
It also adds a lot of time lost when dealing with furniture.
This is why it does cost more to stretch carpet when furniture is involved.
I do give my clients 2 options, one is if they move all the furniture and have the room empty before I get there, or I give them a price after I've seen the home that includes me moving the furniture.
To me that's fair and seems to be working out pretty well.
So if you're a consumer, what good is a warranty on a carpet installation
when this is what they call fixing your problem?
This job took about 6 1/2 hours to stretch everything right
with moving furniture and cleaning the carpets downstairs.
In this situation again it's not the home owners fault, it's either the builders or the carpet installers cutting corners and trying to make the most money.

Great job. I was an installer for 12 years. Getting ready to get back into restretching and repairs. What you described has nothing to do with how much the installer gets paid. It's about competence and integrity. Sadly, many installers lack those qualities.

I can absolutely understand how annoying that must be after having all the furniture moved in, but it definitely can be fixed without completely emptying out your house!

I work in apartment maintenance and I have various flooring installation done. There have been many good ones, but I have had some that cut the baseboards up with there knifes as long slits down the length need repaired. Most recently I checked sn install and it wasn't properly stretched with ripples already in the carpet, called him back and he just went around with his knee kicker. I asked where his power stretcher is and he said he was saving to buy one. Then the seam he put in had 1/4 inch gap between the naps. I let my carpet supplier know that I was not pleased with this installer.

Good job . I do about 3 restretches a week. Always powerstretch and double tack. Good money in repairs and restretches . Just did one today.

I'm disappointed how I had my hall re stretched, it looks fine except how they've tucked the carpet into the shkirting board, it looks wobbly and uneven, any reason this occurs?

Wow, I already appreciate what you're saying and just heard the first 10 second's! We have an older, one level ranch. We finally got to the point in our lives to afford new carpeting and other major home improvement's throughout and were so excited! Well, it was a week and a half ago roughly that we had 2 kid's here from Flooring America. Long story short, yeah,...'they didn't give a damn!' Too busy playing with his female buddy like kid's, and left a mess for his co-worker's who came on day 2. They even had to call the head installer down to figure out 'a fix.' I was stressed out so bad and in tear's and frankly, sick to death of playing babysitter to hired help anymore. We've worked our asses off our entire lives to do this and are pissed. Now, I have to call the company again because we have buckle's in the one room (living room) that kid did, which is at the moment is fairly empty because our new furniture isn't due for 2 more day's 'which WE planned purposely for them' and moved all of our furniture FOR them, to make it easier. Done being nice because this is where nice got us. What a shame.
I'm sorry to hear that! It's unfortunate because there are a lot of older installers who really work hard, love their job, and do amazing work. Then you get stories like yours that just ruin the way people look at installers. I hope everything works out for you and you're able to get the carpet fixed the way it should be.
@@justsaygold Yeah, the other two they sent to take over,...one was on old timer, 30 yrs+ doing it and was AMAZING! I'd seen his name in the review's from other customer's which was why I hired Flooring America to begin with. One bad apple won't spoil the whole bunch for us it will never tarnish that wonderful mans great reputation but,...it may hurt the young one who dropped the ball to begin with. It seems this way everywhere you look these days in every trade,......sad :( Thank god for people like yoursel and the older gentleman we were fortunate to have. I hope he's the one who comes back to fix it.
Flooring America, is a franchise operation, each store is independently owned and operated!! I worked for Robbie K. In the Cleveland Ohio area for years.. He payed well and in return got excellent installers!! Good labor ain't cheap,, and cheap labor ain't good!!! It's a happy medium!!

Yes it is very sad that people pay high dollar for a brand new house only to have the carpet buckle and wrinkle in the 1st year.
So,,,,,,, do you do new construction??? If so are you on the floor and what do you charge??? Do you sub it out??? And if so,, what do you charge and then what you pay out???? These are illegals that slap it down for cheap,,,, everyone gets paid , and the contract com makes his!!! Carpet isn't even consider a trade anymore!! Even Southern Boys listens and try s things cause he knows he can still learn things ,. Rug is a list art,, been doing it for awhile,, I had great teachers!!

Happened to me 5year old house and the carpets look terrible someone's coming out to have a look at mine Monday
appaulling installation. after over 50 yrs crawling for a living i've see this all the time. layers that just dont care, have no ideas of how to work there tools, let alone how to install. my dad taught me to lay. we have always given a lifetime waranty on our installations. put your price up and get paid for your worth. some cloths are made for a dollar and no matter how much you stretch them they will give. i often place a second row of gripper on these which allows for a tighter stretch. i know extra cost in the lowest paid trade but cheeeppper than a call back. keep stretching and stay safe.

Yep my carpet installer was hot garbage. 8 months into it and it needs restretching.

I had rugs replaced about 2 or 3 years ago and they are buckling all over the place. Ridiculous. I'm going to call the people tomorrow to see if they can stretch them, because I'm going to trip and possibly hurt myself on these these rugs

You may have already answered this question and I missed it, but is there an "average" cost a person might expect to pay for stretching, say, an average size living room? Also, thank you for your very informative video. I came looking for a "how to" and you quickly convinced me to seek out a professional!
Thank you for watching and that is a great question. There are many factors that can change the price like if there is furniture in the room or if the room connects to other areas with carpet. Also, the price can depend on which area you live in. But on average I would say the price can be between $75-200 for an average-sized living room without any furniture in it. The lower price would probably be an installer that does side work and charges lower and the higher price would probably be a larger company that has to pay overhead.

The exact damn thing happened to us. Brand new house and a little over a year we started seeing ripples. Pretty pissed about it.
I would be upset too, hopefully there is still a warranty on the work so you can try to have it repaired!
New houses seem like they're built like shit and cut corners constantly. Just moved out of a house that we built 22 years ago and they did a phenomenal job. In 22 years the carpet never rippled and we never had any issues at all with the house.
Moving into a brand new house we had 15+ warranty repairs in the first year. Kitchen sink fell through into the cabinet below, bathroom shower faucet fell through the wall the first time I used it, foundation cracked in the walkout basement (in multiple spots) we only have half a backyard because there's forests behind the house and they just... didn't grade half the backyard, the living room floor has an inch deep dip with a diameter of about 10 feet. We finished the basement shortly after moving in and the trap for the master bathroom toilet comes through the fucking ceiling in the basement and THEY installed the ceiling drywall in the basement. They just cut a hole for the trap to come through the ceiling instead of fixing it with a properly sized trap.The list goes on.
They tried getting out of grading the backyard claiming it "wasn't in the contract." What the fuck do you mean it isn't in the contract? Do I not get the full backyard that I fucking paid for?
New houses are built like absolute shit and it genuinely worries me to think of how many issues I'm gonna have with this new house. Just walking through the house you can feel how cheap it feels despite being a 400k+ house.
Never buy a house built by Horton. Absolutely shameful quality of work.
Did you not have any issues with been short in places after new stretch, like around corner edges and stuff?
I did in 2 of the bedroom closets, I had to do small patches, but everything else was fine.
Carpet must bubble up a lot faster in Australia due to how hot it is over there as well. Bet you can make heaps of bank from repairs over there. Shit installers never last any way and the good ones always end up taking work off them and fixing their jobs for $$$.
I'm over in California in the US and there is no shortage of re stretch jobs, I think I'll always have work thanks to the big box stores.
I’ve been in an apartment for almost 4 years and the carpet is starting to do this. Do you know if something like this is supposed to be covered by an apartment complex’s owners? I also really don’t want to deal with moving all furniture out of my apartment. My son’s bunk bed is super heavy and was so hard to install, lol.
It definitely should be covered by the management. The problem is if they can find a company to stretch the carpet and if they can work with your furniture in the rooms. Unfortunately most management companies will try to avoid the issue until you move but if the wrinkles in the carpet are very bad they can become a tripping hazard so you can bring that up to them and hopefully they can get it fixed for you.

My kitchen and dining room do not have carpet, but the carpet in the rooms and hall are starting to get ripples in various random spots. Which I’m assuming is from general wear and tear, over the last 4 years. I vacuum regularly and don’t even allow shoes to be worn in my place, lol.
I am in apartment maintenance and often you can request stuff when signing renewals.

I use the Taylor roller for stretch walls. Main reason I use it the stretcher it can be close to wall and still be able to crease it.
That is one thing I didn't like about using the Speed Catt is I couldn't have my stretcher head too close to the wall.
How much did you charge?
The stretch on this job was $825. 1,100 square feet at 75 cents a square foot to stretch.

I started about 10 years ago and went with a local insurance broker who took care of all that for me. I asked where I bought my chemicals locally and they referred me. It costs me about $1,000 a year.
Adam, $1,000.00 a year is the going rate for probably a million dollar policy!! I spend a LITTLE more for 2million, but I also do tile bathrooms and what not! A 2 million is not much more!! Just saying!!

First problem is they have carpet in the first place. Why anybody would have carpet in their home anymore is totally ridiculous. It's about as stupid as above ground pools.
Carpet is cheaper , quieter, softer, and warmer. I install all types of flooring, there's different reasons for different flooring!! I have commercial carpet squares in the basement so my pool table doesn't move. Hard surfaces in the kitchen, baths, and entrances. 10lb pad under 50oz carpet in the living areas so I can lay on the floor and watch tv if wish. Some people will use carpet and pad to give their children some protection in play areas! Hard surfaces can have a lot of issues also if not installed correctly!! FYI.
@@stevehamman4465 You're exactly right. Houses with carpet are much quieter than houses with hard surface floors. Sound waves bounce off of flat surfaces. This is why newer houses built today are like echo chambers. They're too noisy. When I walk into these new houses, I feel like I'm at Grand Central Station. Even the ceilings are flat surfaces now. Some people might not like the popcorn ceilings, but those textured popcorn ceilings were designed to break up sound waves and make houses quieter. Being a 70's child, I too like to lie on the floor sometimes and watch TV. Small childern and hardwood flooring are a disaster also. Children like to bang their toys around on the floors. After a year of children playing on your hardwood flooring, your wood floors will look like crap. Hardwood flooring is for those young people who have no children, allergy sufferers, empty nesters or those who want to keep up with every trend that comes out on HGTV. For Derek, I want to say: People are not stupid for picking out carpet or above ground pools. People pick out things that make them happy and that they can afford. You need to get rid of that elitist/snobbish attitude. Material things don't make you who you are. It's you attitude which comes from your heart.

Power stretching is bad for subfloor repair squeak because you cut open a seam you gaped out power is good for big areas
It's not necessarily a bad installation. All carpets need re-stretching every certain years depending on the carpet quality.
Yes the backing of the rug will eventually break down, but if properly installed, 10 plus years!! Then usually time for new rug anyhow!!
Even with the best installer carpets will eventually get like that

James,,,, I am the best installers,,, . It would take me months to explain why you are wrong!!! That is why carpet is supposed to be a trade!!!! A trade,,, takes years to !earn!! Not so much anymore!! Mostly carpet goes by the backing!! I wonder how many crude can install a Karastan?? Even Southern Boy?? But he does know his stuff Eventually the backing and padding will break down but not in 7hrs if installed correctly, if your a good installer ,, you charge accordingly!! Kardashian = $11.00 a yard for flat work, and triple for custom work!! Call me in three years when it starts to bubble!!
