    Important Correction of Information: The Summit uses DIGITAL Envelopes, and DIGITAL LFO's. The Filter as well as the distortion unit are Analog. My apologies for the incorrect information.
    A Special Presentation from Major Oscillator:
    1 Hour of discussion comparing the Novation Summit and ASM Hydrasynth. What an incredible duo of polyphonic synthesizer bliss!
    Spoiler: There's no winner in the end. But if you own one, and are interested in the other, this video might give you some valuable insight. Also I compare these 2 synthesizers to women. At the very least it's some synth related entertainment to keep you smiling while we're all stuck indoors. Stay healthy and happy. Check out www.majorosc.com for patches featured in the video.

    In my opinion, The two best synths you can buy as a pairing of synths under £2000 each (and since you made your video, that now would include the 16-voice, 71-key ASM Hydrasynth Deluxe if you wanted, and the fantastic Firmware 2.0 upgrades for both synths). I am soon lucky enough going to have them both (Novation Summit is on its way).

    I, too, find that some of the patches on the Hydrasynth are brash to my old ears. This is not as much the synth itself, but the programmer.
    The beauty about the Hydrasynth is the big-ass knobs, especially the ones dedicated to filter cutoff. There is no "work" to it! Just grab that sucker
    and roll it. Your comment about the FX engine baffles me. The reverbs and FX are stellar. Much better than any DSI or Rompler attempts.
    Thanks for posting.

      Hydra is very edgy but it can also sound mellow. A couple of the electric piano sounds are really soft in a surprising way but you can go pretty extreme on the ears on many sounds. Have the Hydrasynth. So much attention to detail in it and the polyphonic aftertouch makes it a complete no brainer. Don't have the Summit but it looks and sounds lovely.

    The Hydrasynth filter LP3 you couldn’t remember the name for @ 16:26 is the Threeler Eurorack filter. Fluxwithit would have been responsible for it being modelled and included.
    The original Threeler filter was designed by Ian Fritz and Synthcube.

    Great comparison, the Summit is a real keeper: I compared it to the DSI Prophet Rev 2 to see which could create the gnarliest aggressive detuned sync saw sound, and the Summit won - those digital oscillators are truly excellent and the filters a little more rounded than the DSI Curtis chips.

    two truly fantastic synthesizers!
    would I have taken a summit if I had still had room in my home studio? yes most definitely!
    but the peak is already a great desktop capable of generating incredible sounds!
    and as far as the hydrasynth is concerned, its matrix has 32 cords, the possibility of having the dosage of the amount of modulations of each of them in destination
    makes it almost a true digital modular which can therefore go in all creative directions!
    in short, two fabulous little gems of technology!
    thank you very much for this comparison in any case, it was fascinating and very instructive! :)
    best wishes ! ;)

    What a great comparison thankyou very much! i tested both today and i would love to buy both but i might start with the summit and will buy the hydra after.. for me the summit is the hands on brave good old analog'isch synth to start with where as the hydra tends to be more an uncontrollable beast (like serum in the box) too much possibilities might be overwhelming for starters like me..

      Well there's quite a few patch banks out for the Hydra now. It probly feels like more work to me because I was working from scratch and really didn't explore any of the factory patches (by choice. Wanted to establish my own style of design etc. I think once you find a patch bank out there that fits your prefs you'd be able to get familiar with it alot quicker and probly get it sounding the way you like it by just editing the presets you like the most. I did that sort of thing for years back why I had a virus ti and a jd800. We're spoiled for choice these days honestly. What a time to be playing hardware synths haha

    • @MajorOSC
      @MajorOSC  4 роки тому +2

      Hahaha dude you're not kidding. That's the only downside to the Jupiter x keybed. The summit keybed is like almost non-existent in terms of impact noise. It's a nice change of feel going back and fourth. Jupiter feels like it's meant to be versitile for playing keys and piano, with a strong impact and deep throw. The other feels like a turbo short-throw keybed for those insanely fast solos going up and down.

    Thanks for that detailed comparison!
    Very helpful for someone being on the verge to order one of them :)
    one remark to 1:17:30: are the LFOs 3/4 are really free running only?
    from the manual:
    "LFO 3/4 Rate Sync
    Displayed as: LxRateSync (where x=3 or 4)
    Initial value: 8 beats
    Range of adjustment: See table at page 45 for full details
    LFO Rate Sync allows the speed of the LFO to be synchronised to an internal or external
    MIDI clock: the parameter selects the sync division factor. For LFO Sync Rate to be
    operational, it must first be enabled with the Sync button 30 ."

    • @MajorOSC
      @MajorOSC  3 роки тому +1

      Sync'd to tempo yes, just not not trigger synced. So what I meant by free-running is that when you play a key, it will not reset. This means even if it's sync'd lfo 3 and 4, there's no guarantee you'll be sync'd correctly. Or it will sound differed. Now, from a production standpoint, this isn't too much of a drawback. Why? Because you have infinite attempts to play your riff on an lfo-reliant sequence (where all are being used for something rhythmic) where it lands on the correct subdivision instead of milliseconds ahead or behind. Imagine there is a set of 16th notes or 8th notes that are constantly running in the background sync'd to the correct Tempo of your track but not to the counts or the play button. if I really need to record one of the patches from the summit that uses the global lfos for rhythm, I just hit record and do my best to try and use the visual feedback from the flashing lights to nail the correct downbeat, play my riff ideas, fix any midi notes I need to fix, then do a live record pass. This also might take a few attempts. It has been much easier for me to trigger those kind of complex sequences when I use at least one of the global lfos as a synced quarter note. This at least helps you nail it on the downbeat.

    This is a great rock n' roll style review. Fun facts: FPGA chips in Summit + new user wavetable editing software. I enjoy layering 2 MIDI'd synths with the mixer, which is like a Summit's 2 layers. Synths are shape-shifters of the musical world, which is kind of their point, though overall ASM Hydrasynth may be less my thing. Late great Bob Marley sang, "Let your yea be yea and your ney be ney". Just sayin'.

    Im a new Summit owner and I was in the market for an analogue/digital synth and the effects part on the summit was for me a deal breaker. The effects are insanly good.. No need to spend a pretty decent amount of money on a timeline and big sky.. They are that good. Totally blown away, easily the best onboard effects on the market. The distorsion/od/chorus is also magnificent. And I looove that everthing is on a knob.. No menudiving. But you could of course do that to if you wanna go really Deep in sound design.

    Super useful video! Currently choosing between either the summit or the Hydrasynth Deluxe, leaning towards the Summit. Although I'd love the 73 keys and polyAT..
    One question, is it possible to use 3 MIDI channels at the same time on the Summet? As in, having part A and B both receive MIDi from a sequencer while using the keys as a master keyboard to play an external synth or VST?

      Summit is a pain in the ass with all things midi. I can't speak for others but I'll tell you that I gave up trying to do anything beyond basic triggering of notes via midi. The list of issues might have been addressed since the last firmware update however, but I can't confirm if so. Sorry. Summit DOES function via midi, but as soon as you start trying to do stuff beyond the basics, like use a mod wheel for example, you're in for an unpleasant experience.

      @@MajorOSC Gotcha. Thanks for the reply! I've read about it having some MIDI issues here and there, I'll make sure to dig deeper into and see what the new firmware fixed before committing to anything. On the other side, have you encountered any issues of the sort with the Hydrasynth? If it (The Deluxe) works much better than the Summit on that point, along with 73 keys and PolyAT, it might tip me over to its favor actually.

    Your analog like string patch at 24:50 sounds great. Nice programming there. I haven't heard a patch this rich out of the other You Tube HydraSynth videos. Your sequences using the envelopes, and LFO's on the Hydra are super. So you set the LFO to say a square wave and modulate a perc type of timbre and time it to get the back beat snare effect? Compare Summit Pad at 1:24:12 to Hydrasynth pad at 24:50. The HydraSynth digital synth pad is surprisingly close to the Summit analog pad!

    • @MajorOSC
      @MajorOSC  3 роки тому

      In the old firmware, I used on lfo set to square to control other modulation routings as a gate, which in turn was altering the modulation amount value of any given OTHER slot. I'd have alot of looping sync'd envelopes running in the background of sorts, where other mods would allow them to be "audible"in lamest terms. With the 1.5 update, those things went out the window because of the lfo/envelope trigger assignable abilities, mod slots being able to modulate a macro (made up of as many as 8 parameters). And of course, the additional steps added to the step lfo mode. The Ignition 2 patch bank was great because it came out the day of the firmware, and it was the only patch bank to offer a full 128 presets built on that firmware. ASM provided me access to both develop a new patch bank, and assist with development identifying bugs.

I couldn't help but notice how similar sounding your HyrdaSynth patches and UDO Super 6 synth patches were upon first listening from your site. I know the UDO is analog and expensive ($3,500) but you created similar useful rich patches for the HydraSynth considering the desktop version is $800 that's pretty amazing to get similar featured patches. I think the UDO poly synth is one of the best polys lately. Just out of the budget range of many. I prefer it to the OB6, Prophet 6, even the Prophet 5/10 for the UDO's modern sounding features combined with analog. Perhaps the Moog One would compete with it but you bump up to $8,500 for the Moog! Nice sound design with all of you patches. Thanks for the free Pro3 patches BTW available on your site.

    Love them both. I finally have the Hydra on order. I like the Peak/Sumit too, especially the effects are really nice. But somehow it kindof seems to sound a little too glassy for my liking.Maybe I should listen to it in person sometime. I do like and have the BS2 and I wish it sounded like that, but it really doesn't. In fact it still reminds me a bit a bit of the old nova/supernova synths, which always sounded a bit plasticy (I used to have the Nova, which for it's time was an awesome synth, but which didn't age very well I feel).
    I really want the Hydra for it's polyphonic aftertouch. I have a bunch of synths which should respond to it over midi (P6, rev 2, Pro 800) and it'll be fun to mess around with a CS80 vst as well. On top of that the Hydra has this incredible synth engine, which will provide months of exploration :) Anyway as you ca probably guess I have the Hydra on it's way. As far as the Summit, I feel that there's not a lot that it can do that I can't get out of a VST.

      Personally I'd just use an external sequencer like the Squarp Pyramid or Akai MPC and sequence both of them on different MIDI channels in real time. Problem solved and a lot easier than using an onboard step sequencer.
      Let's just say the Summit has split and layers (like the Prologue or Rev2) and the HydraSynth has a sound and other features (like an OB-6 or P-6 which don't have split either).

    The statement the you cannot change de curve of envelopes is wrong: each enveloppe segment is a destination modulation, you just have to affect de "one-cycled" sawtooth LFO to the A, D, ou R en that's it. This is the trick I use to make punchier attacks. And Summit envelopes are not analog.

    • @coyotesynth
      @coyotesynth 4 роки тому

      Also: Envelopes cannot be tempo synced on Summit: this is TRUE. But, again, LFOs can. LFO in 1 cycle mode are simple envelopes. But, yes, tempo-triggered envelope would be better.

      Module is good. Keyboard is awesome because it's polyphonic aftertouch and because of the ribbon slider. You can modulate pretty much anything on it. There's a patch I made called telsa's lab where the ribbon increases and decreases the delay timing on a delay of mere milliseconds. It sounds insane. Also you can control the ribbon as absolute +-, absolute + only, and relative, which increases or decreases value from wherever you touch it and whatever direction you slide. Highly recommend keyboard if you have the room for it. I'd go a keyboard and a peak if I could afford it versus just getting a summit.
