    For those who need a spoiler: The Final Analogy / Conclusion is... 01:39:10
    "The Grand Tour Luxury Super Sport, and the Exotic Track Day Car."
    What do two FPGA-based Hybrid polysynths have in common? A few important things, but not as much as you'd think. Fortunately the similarities they share are some of the most important things to consider when buying something in this price range. They both sound incredibly good - possibly even the best I've ever heard. They're both similar in price. Yet on paper, the specs appear to be stacked more to one side. This video is a good example of why specs don't matter as much as most people think - especially when considering the end result; Music.
    In the end, they're both winners. In fact it was my intention to make the choice even harder if you're considering either of these.
    The Summit and Super6 will be put through their paces with real world applications; Productions. Performance. No Science. There's no Oscilloscope, no measurements. Your understanding at the end of this will not come from clinical observation. It will come from listening. They sound different. Amazing, and different. For everyday stuff like leads and bass, they can sound similar for sure. But when you dive deep and exploit their strengths, this is where they will blow your mind. I hope to show you a little bit of both. Which of these fits your style, your taste? If both, start saving. They're worth it. In fact I think they might be the best sounding polysynths to come out in decades.
    Leave a comment and share your thoughts. Keep it positive and speak from experience, and not from speculation.
    Description will be updated shortly with time links for the various sections.

    Great video! Fantastic music, graphics, and editing! I’m still going through your custom ASM Hydrasynth patches (amazing stuff). However, the fact that I also have a Novation Peak, I’ll soon be checking out your custom patches for it! Hopefully UDO eventually develops a ‘desktop’ version, as I’m running out of space very quickly. Thanks again for all your great work, unique videos, and honest reviews!

    I love the Summit for the storing of sounds and its multi timbral buttons. Also, feel like its easier to get the Summit to fit in a mix. Probably all biases because I have 80s synth sound fatigue. Well done! I'd like to hear a comparison between the UDO and Polybrute.

      Both sound good and useful in a production pallet. I too hear the Super 6 as more transparent (alive as you write), more in your face, up front. Major OSC has since got rid of the Super 6 stating how it handles stereo spread of the oscillators confines the sound (hard left and right), not allowing the interaction of the osc more panned in towards the center which allows them to interact in more interesting ways (If I understood his comment in a subsequent video). I am guessing he kept the Summit.

    The stereo effect you so rightly admire and call, "Stereo Image" at 20:57, is partially due to having the effects at the pre-filter stage. Which allows the filters to control each side of the stereo effect output rather than having it in the traditional way, post filter. You will see this implemented in other manufacture's designs. This is why when attending an exhibit hall, I try finding the small manufacturers, they often possess and have implemented great ideas into their products. Thumbs up on the task at hand.

    Looks like you didnt added a Summit Chorus at 56:00 minute, so the compare isnt fair without it. Summit/Peak have a very warm chorus, once of the best i ever heard, and it's giving a very retro sounding to it. But yeas - Ude Super 6 looks like unreal warm, clear and very stereo panoramic synth.

    Summit is deeper and more sonorous, Super6 is shinier and more surface. I'm as drawn to the immediate reaction to the Super6 as anybody, but I think there's a reason the Summit stuff would sit better in a mix. I'd go for the Summit, at least today, given the opportunity. :) and make a plugin to give it the Super6 gloss ;) because you can't make a plugin to give the Super6, the Summit sonorousness and tone intensity and depth

      Once I sold off the Jupiter X, the following monday (once them reverb funds became available) I emailed every known distributor in the UK. Since new distributors were being added as time went on, it presented limited opportunities to luck out and find one that just happened to know it was getting a few shipments that week. That's exactly what happened. .

    Thanks for the comparison. Well done. Nice music too. Now if I would be 'young' and if I had only 2.5K in my pocket, I would never buy the UDO. My choice would be the Summit + Argon 8 desktop. Which would give you plenty more sonic possibilities. I own a Summit and a a lot more. The UDO sounds good, no doubt. I bought the Summit because it has this subtle 'dark edge' that only few synths have, like i.e. an Oberheim M12. I think the sound of the Super 6 is closer to the Hydra. The Hydra is a real winner, just like the Argon 8. That is because of the price and possibilities... If the UDO would exist in desktop version for 1.599€, I would buy it as an extra. Considering it's technical shortcomings in comparison with the Summit, I think the kb version is just a little overpriced and for that reason not a 'starter' synth but more an add on if you are really well equipped and are looking for it's specific sonic texture. But than the Summit is also an equal choice...

      Think you make some good points. I’m thinking of the Summit for my one and only one hardware synth (room and wife considerations). I love the SUPER 6, but from what I’ve heard so far, the Summit comes across as a better all round ‘one only’ synth. I have a while to decide though and still have a few more options to consider.

      @MajorOSC  3 роки тому +1

      Doh! good call man. F*** lol. I knew something was mising. Oh well. Sure I'll add it when I do a full review of the Super 6. That'll come once I finish a patch bank and after the firmware update. Super6 aftertouch is easier to get started because it's less stiff or requires less pressure than summit, but a little tricky to be smooth with. The Summit keybed feels still but robust and very very durable, plus it has those fat black keys lol. The aftertouch has improved over time as the keybed gets more wear and tear "broken in." No issues with either one.

    I don‘t have a lot of room for hardware synths and am very interested in the Hydrasynth, Summit, and Super6. I mainly work in the box and would want to use one of these hardware synths to also control my soft-synths.
    Sound-wise, I‘d go for the either of the three. I’m slightly partial to the Super6, though.
    Control-wise, I‘d go for the Hydrasynth. It also seems very intuitive to use.
    The keybed is quite important to me. I have only tried the Hydrasynth‘s keybed. To me, it‘s only ok, unfortunately. The best keybeds I‘ve played was on a Virus TI2 and on a Yamaha EX5. Is my assumption correct, that out of the three, the Super6 has the best semi-weighted keybed?
    Based on my above mentioned comments and requirements, which synth would you recommend to me and why?

      Also, soundwise I prefer a warm and analog sound.

    • @MajorOSC
      @MajorOSC  3 роки тому +2

      Hydrasynth makes for an awesome midi controller. Keybed is also great but just takes some time to break in and get used to. Best aftertouch pressure curve I've ever used. Really. If the sound matters and you still need a little bit of midi flexibility summit might serve your cause well because there's a few more midi and routing options compared to the super 6 but it is limited compared to hydrasynth. The macros on Hydra are really good for midi control because you can select which cc's they control. You can program a sequence to control your parameter mappings on your vst's. It's really cool to work with. Most of the time it IS my main midi controller. One plus for the summit is you can use the effects with any stereo input. Set it up as a send track and run any vst you want into it. There's some stuff to consider.

    • @MajorOSC

      @@underwatersunlight3795 well above all I prioritize sound and the user experience. The super 6 is pure fun and sounds incredible. If the midi stuff isn't as much a priority I say go for the super 6. Look at it this way. If the Super6 doesn't work out for you, it'll sell in about 5 seconds on reverb so I wouldn't be worried if I were you. Go with your initial gut feeling.

    • @himbeerjogi
      @himbeerjogi 3 роки тому +1

      I am not sure if you asked everybody here but in case you did:
      If you had a hydrasynth and an ob6, I would go for the summit, because this would add a workhouse to two synths that have that special something to them. If you had the hydrasynth and the Prophet 6, I would actually go for the super6, because you then have two synths covering all your „Standardsounds“ (and many more of course) already and you can give your setup some extra spice. I myself bought synths with lots of character first (matriarch, ob6,...) and was very happy to get a summit for all the sounds „in between“, which I now use more than any of them, because its so versatile. I hope that makes sence.

    • @MajorOSC
      @MajorOSC  3 роки тому +2

      i think it's more likely because you didn't watch the entirety of both perhaps? lol. ;) - JK. That's a subjective statement you open with though, so I can't exactly give you a solid answer. I should have mentioned this in the video; The bass (on both takes) is being modulated live at various points. In addition to that I enabled chorus 8 or 16 measures in. In creased more as the tune progressed. Each began dry with no effects. Both ended up on chorus 2 full wet. TBH Summit has always sounded about 10X more impactful or punchier for envelopes and filters, but it's super subjective, because the filter on the Super 6 exibits completely different traits that could understandably be perceived as sounding fatter or maybe brassy and rich, or perhaps more characteristic of old analog synths like the poly 6 (because it has the exact same filter as one). Interesting observation but can't say it's either of the factors you mentioned.

Firstly it has 400 samples of all of rolands drum kits like MC-101 etc perfect for 80's, its got two DSP synths with their own sequences, a drum track sequencer and a vocoder or Analog type syth. so 4 multitimberal 128 note polyphonic 4 part recording, with paramater recording as well. Also it acts as a digital imput so Audio to USB off all 4 tracks. look it up its a little beast. But I have decided my next big synth will be OB-6 (unless prophet announce something new) the OB-6 is the only synth that cannot be replicated by VST and brings something I cannot do on REV2 which I still argue is the best Analog modern synth in terms of versatility and range of sounds.... cheers !

I'm sure both have wide uses but I'd pick the UDO if I had to chose one based on the sounds you played on both synths. I think I read you got rid of the UDO because of how it assigns voices left/right with the popping in and out effect. Though I also read that UDO updated its firmware fairly recently to allow for a pan assignment of voices, though I have not been able to find any YT videos demonstrating this new stereo panning.

      Got rid of it because I lost my office job lol. though good thing in hindsight as I now work full-time for Modal Electronics. The super 6 never had any issues panning it anything like that. We are in an amazing time with so many choices. I started with an original Pro 1, tracking it for multiple voices in the 80's. Then came the Prophet 5, then the DX7, which was the game changer at the time. Now we have old coming back again as the newly produced analog synths, we have so many instruments even before getting into the plug in world. I personally love my Sequential Pro 3 and think it is one of my best sounding current synths. I only wished Sequential had made a poly of the Pro 3 but I know that would be very expensive so instead they made the affordable Take 5 which is not that interesting. The Pro 3 is a stunning sounding instrument and with properly written and played arpeggios you forget it's a mono instrument sure it has the 3 voice paraphony but it loses a lot of it's tone in that mode, still nice though.

    I thought the Summit sounded somewhat bright, until I heard the Super 6!! Lol
    I’ve been comparing the ‘Sequential 6’ models, as well as the Summit and the Super 6 with each other, and just in terms of general sound/tone (ie ignoring modulation, FX differences, etc etc), it’s almost as if the Summit is like an FPGA Prophet 6, and the Super 6 like the FPGA OB-6 corollary, in terms of how their sounds would tend to fit into a mix: the Summit being generally darker/fuller sounding; and the Super 6 being brighter/more cutting - reminiscent of the SEM filter synths, to my mind … Is that a reasonable/fair, if somewhat cursory, comparison (again, just in terms of general sound/timbre), would you say?! Like most people, I find analogies useful … especially given the limitations imposed on us by YT compression ,,,

The summit seems all the long of your excellent demo to sound more analog to me. The difference is not gigantic, but step by step, starting from a prophet, the super 6 is really too much digital for my ears, the Summit sounding warmer. Hardware is merely a vessel or delivery system. The depth in modulation abilities and the sound designers will have a much larger impact. Hydra synth is one of my favorites and that thing doesn't have anything analog on it except for the outputs LOL. Hardware is a vessel, that's true, but for some digital synth you have the bad feeling that the vessel is just containing a VST + a dedicated computer. Waste of raw materials... A Mac or a PC are already doing this very correctly and no need to change the computer when changing the VST. More ecological!
      Here this is not a problem the Super 6 seems to be a very good synth. The sound is more digital than a Novation Peak to my ears, and it is less appealing, for me.
      Hydra Synth makes me feel the same. But here too this synth is very capable and produce very good sounds, like the Super 6.
