Boy I feel like even now this car is an attention grabber by people that are into cars, I can’t even imagine how cool it must have been to have a brand new one back in the 90s when they first came out. My first car and first Cadillac was a 1999 Seville SLS back in 2012... and even tho it was an almost 15 year old car then, people still gave me compliments about it. Ever since I’ve been looking for an 03 STS All Black, inside and out, but they’re incredibly difficult to find in decent conditions. Most of them are owned by people that don’t seem to know how to take care of a car lol. Since I was never able to find one like that I ended up finding an 07 STS with that same exact color combination. Did I love that car man. Also got so many compliments even tho it was a nearly 7 year old car back in 2014 when I got it. For some reason people thought it was a brand new car lol. The only thing I hated is that some people would confuse it with a CTS so I had to teach them a thing or 2 about the differences between the CTS and STS. Would you agree that the 4.9 was much better than the Northstar?

My oh my, I do want one of these! A semi-classic cruiser with somewhat modern safety and amenities - what's not to love? Finding a perfect example today will be very difficult, but would absolutely be worth it.

I loved this car when it came out, and despite the shortcomings of the Northstar V8 , I loved it even more afterwards. Smooth classy lines, super comfortable and great looking interior. A solid reminder of times when simplicity was better.

@Matthew Caughey: No. GM was panicking because Lexus put a DOHC V8 in the LS400 in 1989. The InTech showed up late to the DOHC V8 party and was just a wannabe Northstar.
I remember these beauties back during their debut. I knew Cadillac was onto something with that LED stop lamp (probably first car ever to use LED lighting). I remember these being Ivory White, Black, or that Crimson Red color that was popular back then.
brian weymouth yea, this car looks so sexy and sleek. I had a 1999 Seville SLS with the V8 Northstar. I loved it too, but that engine always had me paranoid that something was going to happen to it based on all the horror stories I read regarding the headgaskets lol. Riding in it felt like you were on a soft cloud and boy was it fast even tho the SLS only had the 275HP rather than the 300HP that the STS had. Anyway, I always wanted this model year but was never able to find one the exact same way that I wanted it, which was a black Exterior with a black interior. I ended up trading my 1999 SLS for an 07 Cadillac STS. Now that’s a whole other car, that I also loved but had many issues. It was the 3.6 v6 which had a very common issue with the timing chains, thankfully I was able to get mine replaced without paying a cent due to it being so common that Cadillac put a recall on it. I had it for about 3 years before also trading it in for a 2012 Malibu. Man I miss the feel of that luxury car.

I bought this dirt cheap used and I never driven in a smoother ride. Didn't feel a bump in the road. Had a lot of room in it was comfy. Loved that thing.

distinctively remember my gramps had his back to dealer multiple times with condensation in taillights. they replaced both of them, it happpened again and they said he had to live with it. very poor design. they accused him of over washing car can you believe it, lol?
I always remember seeing them with condensation behind the fogged clearish panel, everyone I ever saw had moisture in them, probably a way to seal em up tight and make them water tight.

Jason M i had the 1999 Seville SLS with the Northstar and I loved it. It was so smooth and felt strong as heck too. It had 150k miles at the time, but the interior was in good condition. I miss it. I traded it in for a 2008 Cadillac STS at around 155k miles. So I didn’t drive it that much lol.
now, imagine CADILLAC producing a modern day northstar, all updated, naturally aspirated V-8. it's certain that the aging loyal customers would prefer the customary 8cyl, to all that turbos &/OR supercharged. ....

Cadillac was always my Dr uncle’s car of choice. I have many fond memories of me and my cousins cruising around in his Seville STS. Thing of beauty back in the early 90s
My mom had 3 STS's. The first one was like this in forest green and man did it have a great engine note. Not fast, but sounded great and handled the best out of the three too. The later 2 had Northstar's and they were quick, and she had NO issues with them. She only kept cars 3-4 years though.
Nice! My mom still drives the same 1994 Seville that I grew up with. We bought it back in the 90s and still runs flawless with well over 300k now. I have a newer 2000 Seville STS that I drive daily.
Had a 1991 Seville STS with same engine. Same steering wheel. Previous small bodystyle. White Diamond on Beechwood leather. Vogue tires and wheels. Then got a 2002 Seville STS with Northstar. Loved that car. Never had this body style. If I got this body style, I would have to get a 1996 or 1997. The radio and center console were more modern in those. Steering wheel from 1995-1997 looks better than this steering wheel from 1990-1994. Plus you get more horses out of the Northstar.
I've seen quite a few cadillacs in the junkyard that were in pretty good shape overall, except they all had Northstars that probably died and just not worth fixing the car.
How about all the old 4.9 engines sitting there....i bet they all spun bearings and overheated like mine did to me. thats all that i saw when I went to the junkyard. all the old 4.5 and 4.9 engines.
@@jakeabernathy1537 Yes exactly. Everyone seems to forget that all junkyards use to be loaded up with all the older Cadillac's. The HT engines were the primary engines used. And before that, they use to be all the older Cadillac's from the 50s, 60s and 70s. At one time, each of those cars were worthless and if there was an engine problem, they got junked too. Its no different today, same exact mentality people have. Sadly enough, people in other countries keep their cars, fix them if needed and continue driving them. Only here in America people get wasteful and junk something when something happens.
I've owned a bunch of luxury and sports cars, and I'd still love to find one of these in prestine condition and buy it. Problem is, the few of these still on the road are all completely ragged out because they were owned by drug dealers, and later, by methheads. Still, a clean, early STS, before they gimmicked out the look later in its life, would be awesome. I want it forest green with an all-white interior.
I got lucky and got one for 1400 with a rebuilt intake manifold and engine (222k miles because of me now, bought it at around 216k), and it's the best feeling car I've ever driven.

Everytime I see this young blonde boy on these old videos, I think wow he is an old middle age man now. I just hope he enjoyed his Youth and made the most of it while he was young. Because we only have a very short time to be young, and a very long time, thanks to many people living into their 80s now, to be old.
That interior looks extremely nice, even for 1992. Love the beige with black exterior too; really makes the car look sleek. From the side, if you didn’t know it was a Cadillac, you’d swear it was a European car. Gives me Alfa Romeo vibes.
Even for 92? The 70’s American luxury cars had interiors that were the epitome of luxurious. Cadillac Talisman, BuickElectra, Oldsmobile Regency’s, Chrysler’s New Yorker, Lincoln Continental. Even for the 70’s whatever that means

The 70's interiors were nice, but usually made with cheap materials (plastic wood veneer, anyone?) and of course reflect that decade's idea of "luxury", which doesn't always age well. What I'm saying more is that, the 92 Cadillac's interior still looks surprisingly modern and tasteful for a car that was made almost 30 years ago. THAT is timeless design.
GM put so much effort into updating and perfecting the Buick 3800, and ended up with legit accolades by the turn of the century for their efforts. I can only imagine what this engine could have been if GM had put some development dollars into updating it for OBDII and keeping a proven, reliable V8 in their parts bin for the significant customer base that is not interested in the latest hi tech gamble
This 1992 model year car is simply the best. Still had the rock solid 4.9 V8. One year too early to have the Northstar. Wish they would have continued with that engine a little longer.

I have a 93 seville sts in ruby red with 102k miles and these cars are insanely powerful for their cost nowadays. I have a tune from chrfab, exhaust, and a few other mods but these cars for their prcing are redic. The northstar engine is absolutely insane in terms of raw power. No turbo or supercharger but these engines run great with a tremendous amount of power. Solver the problems with coolant leaking to head bolts pulling (which i did) and solve the seal leaks and you have an indestructible engine with more power and longevity than most cars on the market. An insane car for the price nowadays. Don't believe me? Buy one. You wont regret it.
My parents still drive their 1994 Seville from the 92 Seville that failed around the time it was still a new car. The Northstar is insanely fast and are fantastic. They are my favorite engines for a modern day Cadillac.
The 1990's was my favorite decade for the luxury car, & this STS is a perfect example of why. The latest in technology coupled with the classic elegance, luxury, & style that buyers had come to demand.
Praetorian 90s cars actually demand high standards. Especially luxury cars. The standard today is so low, that its considered a luxury car if it has a touchscreen, chrome, and 50 sensors that tell you how to drive. People dont even care that most 'luxury' models now are powered by garbage motors, most of the time even more unreliable than this caddy here.

Samuelfish For real. My 1994 Mercedes had 3 ash trays. My 2017 Cruze has 0. It doesn't even have a CD player, I guess those are becoming a thing of the past. New cars are definitely safer and more reliable, but older cars have so much more character and were built to last
Samuelfish I have a 93 Typhoon. It has three ashtrays and a cigarette lighter! I love that truck for it's reliability, simplicity and performance. GM hasn't made anything like it since! These older vehicles are becoming quite collectable.
Rented an STS once; it had the Northstar engine, stability control and adaptive suspension. To this day I still remember how impressed I was at it's level of equipment, how comfortable it was, and how well it drove. My aunt had a Lexus LS 400 at the time and my mom had a Mercedes 400E, so I was intimately familiar with both those cars. Build quality, reputation, and reliability notwithstanding, I actually felt the Cadi was a better car than the Lexus and Mercedes in every other way. Don't know why it wasn't a runaway success; it certainly deserved to be. Anyways, looking back now, it's funny how old things become new again: I remember when all the domestic brands had these fully digital dashes that would even talk to you... yet they were often criticized it back then, and eventually just went back to analog gauges. I guess they were just ahead of their time, seeing how virtual dashes are all the rage now and talking cars are even making a comeback - I'm looking at you Mercedes 😁
I am so glad they're posting retro reviews!!! I saw this car on Sopranos Season 4 Episode 2 at 8min30sec in. I saw that red LED beam in the back, and am surprised for it to be on '92... But it had to be a Cadillac. I want one.
Cadillacs were all over the DiMeo family. Highlights are Silvio's Sevilles, Paulie's ETC and CTSs, and Vito's DTS. Big Pus-sy and Jackie Jr. had 90s Devilles. Tony and Chris had some Escalades. So much more class than Phil's hideous continental kitted Town Car or John's nouveau riche Maser.
In Italy this car was available, imported by but I've never seen it on the road, mainly due to the engine size, too big and heavily taxed ( car tax property here are paid based mainly to the engine size) and too expensive to maintain ( parts were difficult to find and the fuel here cost the equivalent of $6.6/gallon). That was a pity, because this car was very nice back in the days

These were great cars! I remember working at a Cadillac dealer back in the day and the STS was one of my favorites. It was comfortable like a DeVille, but a bit more sporty and modern feeling. The 4.9 V8 proved to be a better engine than the Northstar V8, in the long run.
And here we are, almost 30 years later and new days are still dawning at Cadillac. Speaking of 30 years, I wonder what percentage of '91 LS 400's are still on the road vs. '91 Sevilles? Sadly, a front drive Seville is no match for the Lexus when it comes to reliability and longevity.
I had an 03 SLS for a few years and LOVED it. Pearl white, black tinted windows. Only my previous lincoln town car was more comfortable, but the SLS had far better handling. I sold it out of fear of head gasket issues, although I never had any engine or trans problems.
Daily driven a 93 4.9 Seville since 2010. Was my first car and still don't need or want a new one. Biggest issues I've had with it were the fuel pressure regulator in 2014 and the throttle position senor in 2018. Both very easy fixes, under a half hour each. Both factory parts as far as I could tell. Drive it like I stole it half the time and I live in the desert where its 100+ degrees for almost half the year. Amazing car.
When this car came out I was a kid and I would quote figures about it to people. LOL! I was so enamored with it and the upcoming North Star. Which yes ended up have many issues.
I remember I drove a 94 Deville with the 32v north star with like 270-300 HP, I kicked it down at 15mph and had to hang on for dear life, I was use to a1.8l 81HP vw fox lol. Anyway it would be all over the road torque steer galore. I think it was a 4.6 dohc 32v
first time i drove my buddys 99 sts i could not believe the torque...this was 15 years ago and no other front wheel drive car ive driven has even come close...to bad they never really fixed the head bolt problem cause i would buy one tommorow..
working shlub They did fix the issue, bolts were redesigned in 01 and they were solid afterwards. My old 99' had the upgraded bolts and was fine with 205k. My current 11' DTS is super reliable and just hit 205k last week and still runs, feels, cruises, smells and sounds like a Caddy should. Love these cars.
Good catch - this was "In the Heart of the Young" CD... Winger's two biggest hits, "Seventeen" and "Heading for a Heartbreak" were not on this album but their other well-known mainstream hit, "Miles Away", was. It's the tape that is playing but I don't recognize that song at all.
What was striking, and odd, was to go to a Cadillac showroom in '92 and see that next to a Fleetwood that didn't look much different than in the 70s...
This car from a styling/design standpoint is the high water mark for Cadillac in the fuel injected era. That along with its Eldorado counterpart. Both of these cars are just so subtly handsome, well designed, its hard to find a bad angle or body line on either of them. Granted the 2nd gen CTS might have been a lot more bold(especially in coupe and wagon form), but they are kind of showy, gaudy, like a 1950's Cadillac, not that more subtle style like a 65-70 or 77 to 79 Deville.
The first generation Northstar's from 1993-95 were excellent. The 94 Seville that replaced the 92 Seville that failed still runs strong to this day. The 92 Seville that my parents had the engine failed from the rocker rails breaking to pieces.
Rare combo here, most Seville 93 and later were Northstar. The 4.9 was far more common in the Eldorados and the SDV until 95. Cadillac would have ended up in a very different position if they had adapted the 4.9 to OBDII and continue it as a credit option or something like that.
Loved that car. The fact that Cadillac used real wood showed they were serious about competing with the German imports.

That's one of the best looking cars Cadillac ever made. The styling holds up very well today, much better looking in fact than many/most cars.

Not a northstar, it's probably been melted down, but the headgasket probably wasn't the reason.

I had a 1998 Eldorado that blew a head gasket at 100k and sat in my mom's driveway for six months. She literally called it that, "beautiful junk."
This was pre- NorthStar, this was a very reliable drivetrain.

Cadillac was always my Dr uncle’s car of choice. I have many fond memories of me and my cousins cruising around in his Seville STS. Thing of beauty back in the early 90s
My mom had 3 STS's. The first one was like this in forest green and man did it have a great engine note. Not fast, but sounded great and handled the best out of the three too. The later 2 had Northstar's and they were quick, and she had NO issues with them. She only kept cars 3-4 years though.
Nice! My mom still drives the same 1994 Seville that I grew up with. We bought it back in the 90s and still runs flawless with well over 300k now. I have a newer 2000 Seville STS that I drive daily.
Had a 1991 Seville STS with same engine. Same steering wheel. Previous small bodystyle. White Diamond on Beechwood leather. Vogue tires and wheels. Then got a 2002 Seville STS with Northstar. Loved that car. Never had this body style. If I got this body style, I would have to get a 1996 or 1997. The radio and center console were more modern in those. Steering wheel from 1995-1997 looks better than this steering wheel from 1990-1994. Plus you get more horses out of the Northstar.

I've seen quite a few cadillacs in the junkyard that were in pretty good shape overall, except they all had Northstars that probably died and just not worth fixing the car.
Look a little closer because before the Northstar were all the older HT engines that use to line up the Cadillac sections!
How about all the old 4.9 engines sitting there....i bet they all spun bearings and overheated like mine did to me. thats all that i saw when I went to the junkyard. all the old 4.5 and 4.9 engines.
@@jakeabernathy1537 Yes exactly. Everyone seems to forget that all junkyards use to be loaded up with all the older Cadillac's. The HT engines were the primary engines used. And before that, they use to be all the older Cadillac's from the 50s, 60s and 70s. At one time, each of those cars were worthless and if there was an engine problem, they got junked too. Its no different today, same exact mentality people have. Sadly enough, people in other countries keep their cars, fix them if needed and continue driving them. Only here in America people get wasteful and junk something when something happens.

I've owned a bunch of luxury and sports cars, and I'd still love to find one of these in prestine condition and buy it. Problem is, the few of these still on the road are all completely ragged out because they were owned by drug dealers, and later, by methheads. Still, a clean, early STS, before they gimmicked out the look later in its life, would be awesome. I want it forest green with an all-white interior.
I got lucky and got one for 1400 with a rebuilt intake manifold and engine (222k miles because of me now, bought it at around 216k), and it's the best feeling car I've ever driven.
The guy I bought it from thought that he was selling a piece of shit but when I saw the lettering on the manifold and the milage I knew what was up.

Everytime I see this young blonde boy on these old videos, I think wow he is an old middle age man now. I just hope he enjoyed his Youth and made the most of it while he was young. Because we only have a very short time to be young, and a very long time, thanks to many people living into their 80s now, to be old.
That interior looks extremely nice, even for 1992. Love the beige with black exterior too; really makes the car look sleek. From the side, if you didn’t know it was a Cadillac, you’d swear it was a European car. Gives me Alfa Romeo vibes.
Even for 92? The 70’s American luxury cars had interiors that were the epitome of luxurious. Cadillac Talisman, BuickElectra, Oldsmobile Regency’s, Chrysler’s New Yorker, Lincoln Continental. Even for the 70’s whatever that means

The 70's interiors were nice, but usually made with cheap materials (plastic wood veneer, anyone?) and of course reflect that decade's idea of "luxury", which doesn't always age well. What I'm saying more is that, the 92 Cadillac's interior still looks surprisingly modern and tasteful for a car that was made almost 30 years ago. THAT is timeless design.
GM put so much effort into updating and perfecting the Buick 3800, and ended up with legit accolades by the turn of the century for their efforts. I can only imagine what this engine could have been if GM had put some development dollars into updating it for OBDII and keeping a proven, reliable V8 in their parts bin for the significant customer base that is not interested in the latest hi tech gamble
This 1992 model year car is simply the best. Still had the rock solid 4.9 V8. One year too early to have the Northstar. Wish they would have continued with that engine a little longer.
What it lacked was a rear-wheel drive system and North Star reliability

I have a 93 seville sts in ruby red with 102k miles and these cars are insanely powerful for their cost nowadays. I have a tune from chrfab, exhaust, and a few other mods but these cars for their prcing are redic. The northstar engine is absolutely insane in terms of raw power. No turbo or supercharger but these engines run great with a tremendous amount of power. Solver the problems with coolant leaking to head bolts pulling (which i did) and solve the seal leaks and you have an indestructible engine with more power and longevity than most cars on the market. An insane car for the price nowadays. Don't believe me? Buy one. You wont regret it.
My parents still drive their 1994 Seville from the 92 Seville that failed around the time it was still a new car. The Northstar is insanely fast and are fantastic. They are my favorite engines for a modern day Cadillac.
The 1990's was my favorite decade for the luxury car, & this STS is a perfect example of why. The latest in technology coupled with the classic elegance, luxury, & style that buyers had come to demand.
Praetorian 90s cars actually demand high standards. Especially luxury cars. The standard today is so low, that its considered a luxury car if it has a touchscreen, chrome, and 50 sensors that tell you how to drive. People dont even care that most 'luxury' models now are powered by garbage motors, most of the time even more unreliable than this caddy here.

Why can’t I have a damn ashtray if I want 1? For real. My 1994 Mercedes had 3 ash trays. My 2017 Cruze has 0. It doesn't even have a CD player, I guess those are becoming a thing of the past. New cars are definitely safer and more reliable, but older cars have so much more character and were built to last
Samuelfish I have a 93 Typhoon. It has three ashtrays and a cigarette lighter! I love that truck for it's reliability, simplicity and performance. GM hasn't made anything like it since! These older vehicles are becoming quite collectable.

If you've ever seen the original drawings for the cimarron. This was what the cimarron was supposed to look like.
Rented an STS once; it had the Northstar engine, stability control and adaptive suspension. To this day I still remember how impressed I was at it's level of equipment, how comfortable it was, and how well it drove. My aunt had a Lexus LS 400 at the time and my mom had a Mercedes 400E, so I was intimately familiar with both those cars. Build quality, reputation, and reliability notwithstanding, I actually felt the Cadi was a better car than the Lexus and Mercedes in every other way. Don't know why it wasn't a runaway success; it certainly deserved to be. Anyways, looking back now, it's funny how old things become new again: I remember when all the domestic brands had these fully digital dashes that would even talk to you... yet they were often criticized it back then, and eventually just went back to analog gauges. I guess they were just ahead of their time, seeing how virtual dashes are all the rage now and talking cars are even making a comeback - I'm looking at you Mercedes 😁

Cadillacs were all over the DiMeo family. Highlights are Silvio's Sevilles, Paulie's ETC and CTSs, and Vito's DTS. Big Pus-sy and Jackie Jr. had 90s Devilles. Tony and Chris had some Escalades.
So much more class than Phil's hideous continental kitted Town Car or John's nouveau riche Maser.

I see about 100 of them a day here in Florida.
In Italy this car was available, imported by but I've never seen it on the road, mainly due to the engine size, too big and heavily taxed ( car tax property here are paid based mainly to the engine size) and too expensive to maintain ( parts were difficult to find and the fuel here cost the equivalent of $6.6/gallon).
That was a pity, because this car was very nice back in the days

These were great cars! I remember working at a Cadillac dealer back in the day and the STS was one of my favorites. It was comfortable like a DeVille, but a bit more sporty and modern feeling. The 4.9 V8 proved to be a better engine than the Northstar V8, in the long run.
I had that model year in 99. Loved that car.
And here we are, almost 30 years later and new days are still dawning at Cadillac. Speaking of 30 years, I wonder what percentage of '91 LS 400's are still on the road vs. '91 Sevilles? Sadly, a front drive Seville is no match for the Lexus when it comes to reliability and longevity.

I had an 03 SLS for a few years and LOVED it. Pearl white, black tinted windows. Only my previous lincoln town car was more comfortable, but the SLS had far better handling. I sold it out of fear of head gasket issues, although I never had any engine or trans problems.

Daily driven a 93 4.9 Seville since 2010. Was my first car and still don't need or want a new one. Biggest issues I've had with it were the fuel pressure regulator in 2014 and the throttle position senor in 2018. Both very easy fixes, under a half hour each. Both factory parts as far as I could tell.
Drive it like I stole it half the time and I live in the desert where its 100+ degrees for almost half the year.

When this car came out I was a kid and I would quote figures about it to people. LOL! I was so enamored with it and the upcoming North Star. Which yes ended up have many issues.
I fell in love with the STS when it came on the set of Get Carter, with Silvester Stalone.

I remember I drove a 94 Deville with the 32v north star with like 270-300 HP, I kicked it down at 15mph and had to hang on for dear life, I was use to a1.8l 81HP vw fox lol. Anyway it would be all over the road torque steer galore. I think it was a 4.6 dohc 32v

first time i drove my buddys 99 sts i could not believe the torque...this was 15 years ago and no other front wheel drive car ive driven has even come close...to bad they never really fixed the head bolt problem cause i would buy one tommorow..
working shlub They did fix the issue, bolts were redesigned in 01 and they were solid afterwards. My old 99' had the upgraded bolts and was fine with 205k. My current 11' DTS is super reliable and just hit 205k last week and still runs, feels, cruises, smells and sounds like a Caddy should. Love these cars.

As the video points out, the front drive configuration actually provided an advantage over rwd due to the superior traction. Yes, it matters.

All i can say is..
BEAUTIFUL
This car from a styling/design standpoint is the high water mark for Cadillac in the fuel injected era. That along with its Eldorado counterpart. Both of these cars are just so subtly handsome, well designed, its hard to find a bad angle or body line on either of them.
Granted the 2nd gen CTS might have been a lot more bold(especially in coupe and wagon form), but they are kind of showy, gaudy, like a 1950's Cadillac, not that more subtle style like a 65-70 or 77 to 79 Deville.
I think the tailights on the test car were just about to fog up, LOL😅 It was and still is a great looking car though💯
The Cadillac and the Oldsmobile took similarities in the Euro Touring Sedan look. Both were really great looking cars.
I was a kid when these were still common, here in the states. Quite a few that are still around, these days, despite a lot that are junked.

The first generation Northstar's from 1993-95 were excellent. The 94 Seville that replaced the 92 Seville that failed still runs strong to this day. The 92 Seville that my parents had the engine failed from the rocker rails breaking to pieces.
Looks great and it was brilliant for its time. It's just a huge shame that none of them lasted compared to the LS400.

Rare combo here, most Seville 93 and later were Northstar. The 4.9 was far more common in the Eldorados and the SDV until 95. Cadillac would have ended up in a very different position if they had adapted the 4.9 to OBDII and continue it as a credit option or something like that.
