Wow - I feel like we’ve come full circle. For decades in the mid 20th century there was Bach played indulgently on modern instruments, then we had Bach played fussily on historical instruments, then there was a generation of exploration and discussion, and now we have the perfect synthesis: all the technical and acoustical advantages of modern instruments played by musicians with the period instrument sound and style in their ear. I’m sixty years old and have been playing and listening to Bach all my life and I’ve never heard a better performance of this concerto that I must have heard hundreds of times. Bravo to all. Say what you want about this moment in history, but one thing we can say is this is probably the best time ever in terms of the quality of Bach performances - probably even better than the ones Bach himself heard. I wish he were alive to hear his music perfectly realized.
I dont agree, the music of bach played in the recordings of grumiaux or oistrak, are AMAZING, and well played how is to be played bach, maybe other violinist in 20th century played extremely free, but not all og them, grumiaux is the perfect example, and Im really shore, that vilde frang have very present in her mind all that recordings of grumiaux.
I like your description of the "authentic original baroque style" as being 'fussy'. It has become a rigid and doctrinaire performance practice, that stifles originality. However I do think that the best baroque instrument players Do add something extra special in the fast movements; I recommend Shunske Sato.
Also, the Oistrakh's Bach was romantic and 'syrupy', but their interpretations were compelling: individual genius can always transcend routine excellence.
Vilde Frang is an excellent Bach interpreter. She understands the latest Baroque performance practice and style, but she does not let it become a straitjacket; a compelling individual interpretation
Strange, that I never get tired of listening to this wellknown music. Vilde Frang fills it with something new. Late at night or in the morning I listen to it, and it often shows something new to me. With her playing Vilde fills this music with unexpected ornaments and a force and integrity that impresses on me. And still this is not flashy at all. Just an ordinary uptaking. But what an uptaking! I guess I will never stop admire her playing. And foregive me for writing, AGAIN!
Fresh, young, and truely symphonic! Bach will rejoice "on his cloud". I am sure, he never heard his music so pefectly performed! I love how playful it seems to be for Vilde Frang to play not only the, but with the music, communicating with the orchestra at the same time - and Bravo to Philippe Herrewghe, to make the orchestra as one single instrument of music!!! Bravo! Brava! Bravissima!
@@Piflaser Sorry to say I have never heard Oistrach in this. So when I wrote "I have never heard a better interpretation" it was my own listening I refered to. Frang's is indeed superbly tasteful with great baroque ornamentations but stands well enough in her own right. The best is matter of taste for music as timeless as Bach that stretches into infinite depths of the soul. Touched by God.
Und soooo hervorragend ist diese Solistin auch nicht. Sie wäre es, wenn sie weniger gestikulieren würde. Siehe mein Kommentar oben. Ich hasse Wichtigtuerei
When I listen to this I always think about the flow, Vilde Frang and the orchestra together are in some sort of a flow, I can feel it, and I also feel that I am invited to participate in it. A musical flow of water, perhaps, where I can put down my old feets. Without beeing too sentimenal I just want to thank Vilde Frang, hr-Sinfonieorchestra and Philippe Herreweghe for this extraordinary good performance of Bach BWV 1041.
Bravo to the soloist. She takes control of the tempo from the beginning. I have heard this peace many times, and she does it perfectly. J S Bach, an orchestral genius. If Bach was in the house, he would be pleased.
Marvelous interpretation of this BACH's concert, really impeccable with some little adorns in the in some phrases of the soloist , it is obvious that the orchestra plays without any "vibrato" as it was to used in the BACHs time . I am not sure, but it seems to me to be seeing Anne "Sophie Mutter" when she was young, in any case , great performance with this Norwegian violinist .
I’m in love with this woman. I’m sorry. And the director, this guy is a genius. I love his take on Bach… Is he known for this? I mean, it’s just great considering that this concert was not written for these kinds of instruments (modern instruments or ensemble, I mean)
Another Swede agrees with you, Staffan. Especially the first movement, with her choice of well placed (not too many) ornaments made it a joy to listen to. I find the first movement of the six movements in the two concertos in A-minor amd E-major the hardest one to really get off the ground. Vilde really lets it dance and fly! Wonderful bow handling.
Vilde Frang started to play violin at the age of 4, and she says in an interview that the control has to be there in the rehearsing, over and over. The only moment she can skip control is on scene, there it is a constant flow. I believe I almost can hear this flow in this wonderful interpretation.
There are so many small moments in this concert open for an analysis, the adornes, the ornaments ( as a swede I didnt find the proper word for this in my first comment) she plays so well, and for example the digging in this moment 2:43 for an increasing feeling. And many more examples of how good this is. I just leave it to you to listen to.
as someone relatively new to classical music, it has been helpful to read comments with words like "comforting" so that i can look for that feeling within the music and not just follow along literally (and shallowly/blandly) with the melody. thank you!
Wow! We are so lucky because today we can listen to and watch performances like these whenever we like, they're just brought to us by the UA-cam algorithm. I love this interpretation, it is *seriously* good, hard to find faults with it. Timing, phrasing, dynamic, the tone and voice of that violin, the overall feeling of easiness and lightness, my god it's incredible. I actually have tears in my eyes, so emotional this is. Thank you for sharing. The first thing that comes to mind though is how incredible is this piece of music. I've listened to it since I was perhaps ten, together with 1042 and 1043 it's one of the most perfect violin concertos I've ever known. Well, 1048 too. Let's say 42 and 48 for major, 41 and 43 for minor.
I am so excited to see Vilde perform with Klaus this year! This Bach violin concerto truly has whet my appetite. Much love to all of Frankfurk Radio Symphony!
Cette fille est vraiment extraordinaire. Que c'est beau, en symbiose parfaite avec tout l'Orchestre. Et ce 3è mouvement : les notes volent sur son archer et les cordes de son violon. Mais comme c'est magnifique !
Masterfully played, beautiful own selection and use of ornaments, fantastic distribution of the bow as well as the beautiful sonority produced by her use of baroque bow stroke, i think this rendition is a truly reference for violinist who are studying this concerto
I do agree. I studied the violin until my teenage years. I’m now re-learning this concerto decades later and I am happy to have seen this video. It sounds authentically baroque, and it’s marvellous that Ms. Frang did so with a modern bow!
I like Vildes interpretations of BWV 1041 and 1042, with its relatively high speed. Because if you play this Bach too slow, it sounds as if you are stuck in a ditch, more or less. Even it is heavenly music.
Another thing I have thought of. It seems that Vilde in these BWV 1041 and 1042 is reaching out for the orchestra. She turns to them to get the best help she can get, and the orchestra answers her: Yes, we are here to help you, we will do the best we can. Thats the feeling I get, and as I can understand this turns out to be one of the best performances there is.
Wunderschöne und lyrische Aufführung dieses kompakten doch perfekt komponierten Konzerts mit seidigem doch gut phrasiertem Ton der genialen Solovioline sowie gut harmonisierten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. magnificent performance. these musicians have this music in their morphogenetic field, and it radiates through the harmonies and counterpoints. Bach is the pinnacle, there is no music beyond his. Vielen Dank!
Notwithstanding my extreme distaste for the current rage of embellishments in Baroque performances, this ensemble is elegantly and musically precise in the best possible way. Tempo, phrasing, dynamics - lovely! A perfect ritard at the end of the first movement. The airy, buoyant tempo of the Andante is refreshing.
Brilliant way of playing from both soloist and orchestra. The Herreweghe role is unclear in this case since it looks like the violinist gives dynamic indications by her head and body movements.
Beside the superlative mind-&-heart-opening ( via experiencing integrative architecture composed of best emotings [ of aspiration for liberation & awakining for everyone ] ), one's unusually-high enjoyment may also be due to reduced vibrato, rendering the notes more purely clear ( closer to the prevalent norm in most regions til ca. 1910 ) . Even better if also all tempi were slowed, to ca. 80% of what ours have sped-up-to since then. ( Some UA-cam versions' "Settings" [via the little 'cog' icon] enable this. ) ( Perhaps soon some new app will enable auto- vibrato-reduction; thus rendering perhaps half of all classical music once again enjoyable by most people. )
