Bob James should be inducted into the Hip Hop Hall of Fame.
💯
We're always quick to be "fair" and give out cookout invitations lol. One bad story the opposite way is just a drop in the ocean. The scales are still way out of balance.
100%
Yes, he needs to be in the hip-hop hall of fame.
Speak brother
I love that his biggest issue with being sampled so much, ISN'T about money, it's that he wasn't included in the creative process
He doesn’t mind you sampling his work he just wants to be compensated🤑
I've known this since 1996. He only wanted to collaborate with the rap artists so he can be introduced to a whole new audience.
@@juliancolvil5124 now that's dope
Why would I need to pay you and include you in the process?????Your music is 39999777 years old, sitting in the record bins, and DJs started spinning it..
@@michaels5166 you wouldn't understand if you've never poured hours/days/weeks/months into creating something. That thing is your baby so yes you do care what happens to it.
Thank you Bob James for the shout to the musicians including my father Gary King.
Your father is the man! Love him on the Bob James and Grover Washington Jr records I have. I’ll have to seek out more of your Dad’s music. Hope you are well and my condolences.
Be well. I appreciate the chat and shout out. Music lives on especially in times of COVID and racism.
Fugitive Life from 'Cool' is absolute one of my fave cuts with Mr. King. Dope jam!
I loved your father's inspiring basslines! He and Anthony Jackson really made me pay attention to the bass and what it could really do for a song. I especially loved what your father did on tunes like Alex Zonjic's "Romance with You", Bob James' "El Verano", and Kenny Loggin's "Enter My Dream"....and, of course, "Nautilus"....
Wow man that's awesome your dad did his thing on Hubert Laws live in San Francisco Concert 77 on Modaji awesome!😎
Wow...this Bob James is still in good health...to explain all this stuff..I hope I can be as healthy as he is in that age and still loving music..respect..
I still have an album with him and David Sanborn (sax player) one of my favourite albums. Guys such a talented musician.
So i just finished the video and it is at least 3 hours too short... Thank you so much for making this happen.
I’m a 42 year old white guy who grew up in late 80s/early 99s hip hop. I’m just realizing the greatness of this man and how much his music has contributed to hip hop
"Angela" is one of my all-time favourite tracks :)
Bob and Grover were the two artists you got me hooked on smooth jazz back in the 70’s and 80’s. I still go to any Bob James shows I can.
To my shame, I only know Bob James in association with "Angela". Imagine how amazed I was to discover he was the genius behind so many samples which formed the soundtrack of my youth and young adult years. That sample used in Peter Piper was enough to blow my mind. And what a superb guy he is! Clearly so into music, with no boundaries. This was a fascinating and enjoyable watch, thank you!
I didn't even know producers were sampling that early.
Hip hop and sampling led me to discover real jazz.
I used to go to the record store and buy a pile of used records.
More obscure the better, and just go through it all. Phrase by phrase.
Hip-Hop is poor man’s 70s Jazz-Funk
As if Westchester Lady could get any better...he then tells us Luther and Patti Austin were originally singing over it. WOW (9:10)
you guys happen to have heard this 'down-under' version? : ) ua-cam.com/video/bVqtKo4E_To/v-deo.html
Yes-that part! I wish that lost vocal version wasn't lost to time. During that time Patti Austin & Luther Vandross already had two of America's most recognizable voices. Not only from all that session work with seemingly every artist, but from all those commercial jingles those two would sing on. Of course they're classic duet of " I'm Going To Miss You In The Morning" from this time period on the great album by Patti's godfather- Quincy Jones- " Sounds....And Stuff Like That"- is mandatory listening.
It's really cool seeing an older artist so readily embrace his stuff being sampled. You can tell he finds it genuinely flattering, which is super charming.
Some times we forget if it was not for Hip Hop many artist ,musicians, songs would have been forgotten
That's what was dope about his talk with 9th Wonder. When he teared up because he knew his music was still living... Through the Hip Hop World and Culture... That's love right there. Respect to these guys that paved the way with such great music.
@@mk-ultramags1107 include the RESPECT to the (DJ’s & MC’s ) pioneers who played this music and rhymed in parks, NYCHA community centers, playgrounds etc. and across the tri-state area!
@@tshakashakur2220 , agreed. That's the point of the video with 9th Wonder and Bob James. Takes it to the roots of Hip Hop. How it started with DJs just cutting up records at first, then to them actually making beats. It's what Premo, Pete Rock and Marley Marl all did at first. They were literal "DJs", before they became Producers. Some kept it in their names(DJ Scratch, DJ Quik, DJ Premier' etc.) Battles in the park turned into battles in the studio. No doubt.
I hadn’t thought of it that way, but that’s a great point.
I mean there's still people who listen to jazz so maybe not known by you
I finally....FINALLY got to see him when he came to Hawaii a few years ago at the Blue Note Hawaii. I've been listening to his music since Bob James One and I think I was 12 years old when it came out. 1974? I've been a fan since. FULL DISCLOSURE - whats my fave Bob James record? It's ""Obsession"..yep, I LOVE THAT RECORD....It came out in 1986 when I was stationed in the Navy at Ft. Meade Maryland. Those songs got me through A SPECIAL TIME IN MY LIFE. His music really helped me through some thangs lol. Angela used to make me cry as a kid when I heard it cause it moved me. When I joined the Navy in 1980 I think "H" was the cassette that I got that year. So anyway, when in Hawaii and when I saw him after the show, he signed my copy of 'Touchdown', the original vinyl that I had since I was a kid. I got the LP for a birthday present that year. He looked at me and said, "oh wow, haven't seen that in a long time." And he smiled. GREAT GUY AND LEGEND - A LEGEND IN MUSIC. The concert session was outstanding btw. He DID NOT DISAPPOINT! ONE OF MY MUSICAL HEROES. 👍🏾 Bob James is an American musical legend - period! Thanks for this!
Tracklib is gonna be the future of sampling
I had no idea Bob James was that profound amazing Artis I had no clue that he was about all this song i’ve heard over the years especially taxi incredible🥴 between James Brown and Bob James are the unsung heroes of hip-hop the architects👏🤗
Get Roy Ayers next!
Talent and humility. Refreshing to hear him talk. I’ve sampled his records a lot!
Hey Bob James. Don't forget all the DJs who bought 2 copies of Bob James One and Two before there was any rap record so that they could cut them back and forth and extend the breaks so that the Emcees could rap.. At least that made up for some of the lost copyright money.
He needs to be educated about that. I hope someone tells him about breakbeat culture which should be a subgenre on its own.
@@mention it is within the foundation of hip-hop. #zulunation
@@mention That's a good point.
😂
@@mention trust me he'll have long conversations with with these DJ's and producer's mainly on how they used his samples because some of them are well hidden.
These songs and records bring me back to my childhood. My Dad was a jazz. The samples were creative, but I still listen to these original songs. The can still stand alone. Great timeless music by Mr. James.
REST IN POWER Gary King🖤
Omg bob you have been my favorite since I was 15 years old now I'm 28 thank you for the work you have created
Bob is a genius and architect that deserves ALL the flowers. That Storm King is still soooo slick, chic and cool! Thanks so much for celebrating this brilliant musician and good gentleman.
Classics, after classic, Thank you, Bob James!
Was recently commenting on another site how it would be great for Bob James to do a sort of tutorial video. AND HERE IT IS!! The first album I bought with BJ performing was
"It Feels So Good" by Grover Washington, Jr.... And was then hooked from that moment on. Hopefully, future albums will read "Collaborated With Bob James".
I love Bob James I love Angela I love hip-hop somebody’s guy should be honorable and give him the recognition that he deserves and the royalties that he deserves that’s just my opinion
I didn’t know he uses Ableton too. So cool!!
Yeah it is
Bob James legend - luvly segment gents
Bob James, I'm a avid hip hop music fan so thank you for the music that inspired my favorite artists. Your music clearly transcends, which is the ultimate beauty of it. Good job sir.
Omg This man is by far one of thee top Loved Composers amongst hiphop producers. All Praise Bob 🙌
You can discuss debate on who's been sampled the most in hiphop, but based on this unmistaken vast presence in the music I think you could say:
*_James B. put the rhythm into hiphop, while B. James brought the melody_*
Can we all agree on that one!?
I like that.
I love your music forever Bob James. A musical genius. Blue eyed jazz..
from, Angela
Most important is that through the samples used in hip hop, millions of people have discovered geniuses like Bob James.
Everyone needs to go listen to Storm King RIGHT NOW..
Oh "Storm King" Is My Joint!!!💯👊🏽💥👌🏽
Man shout out to Bob James you are seriously one of my favorite musicians. My dad used to play so many of your records while I was growing Much love man.
Back in the '70s, Bob James music was hot to begin with, when the Hip Hop sampling came in the '80s, everything went ballistic, even some of Grover Washington Jr's music was sampled too, like Hydra, Blackmoon sampled that!!! It was a complete success, that's why I listen to the Original Artist again as I did back in the 70's!!! Thank you Mr.Bob James, and Mr.Grover Washington Jr., GOD BLESS!!!
I love these videos! Bob James definitely a legend
As a producer, the first 6 seconds of Nautilus have haunted me for over 30 years. It's masterful and sounds like an over-processed Rhodes with vibes weaved in, but it's not... so what is it? Would love to see a series with him recreating some of these tracks on the fly.
wasnt he talking about the arp synthesizer?
My guy played that shit on the cow bells like no biggie... Legendary...
Facts,as well as the rest of them,Genius!
I’m a huge Bob James fan and have been since I started tracking down hip hop sample sources in the mid ‘90s. I’ve worked out quite a few of his tunes as solo guitar pieces and definitely borrow heavily from him as a producer.
Angela was the very reason I ever watched Taxi as a kid. When I heard that theme song I just simply felt something I didn't understand, but knew I loved it.
Bob that was very interesting. I love hearing stories about how songs develop. Your songs have been in my life since I was a teen. Just turned 54 and still loving your music!
I was 9years old...listening to my moms "BJ4" album [given as a gift from my Uncle] over & over & over again! She finally passed it on to me one year later😉... I loved the whole album; but my ALL time favorite track was [& STILL is] "El Verano" hands down! From there I discovered "BJ3" ...& "BJ2" etc.
Smh
Bob James has No idea How incredibly "incredible" he IS!🤨😮
Facts! Salute to U Sir!
Thank U.
WOW! I also like El Verano. . I like it because its like a transition from BJ1-4 and Heads to Hot dog albums.
@@socalltd Agreed 😉...jus Gr8 music...for ANY occasion.
Please do what you can to work with some of the greats that sampled you Bob nee great sounds are needed and your ear is legendary. Some of the sounds that are around to day are amazing but we can never have more and your ear has that get in there and help these young guys. We need you Bob
As someone fascinated with samples since I was a 4th grader in 1984 to present day, this interview was a joy to watch.
Something HAS to be done to honor Bob James Foreal
Bob James lookin real fly on that take me to mardi gras cover.
Bob James is a musical genius. He wrote a few of my 10 ten favorite jazzfunk songs. The only issue I have with him is that he sued J Dilla. I take issue with that because I felt it could have been dealt with differently, being that J Dilla is Milt Jackson's nephew.
Go check Nautilia by Falcord, it’a whole album made only by samplig Nautilus.
Crazy to see this man rock Ableton Live! So heart warming how he talks about his songs. Much love and respect from Germany ❤️✌️
I've said it before and I'll say it again......Bob James is a Real One! These YT vids of Bob James sharing that basically He's For The Culture is what's making me subscribe to Traklib. Just sucks that I missed out on the Nautilus challenge because I wasn't ready. But to keep it 100, WHO hasn't sampled or replayed an element from a Bob James song?
I've been listening to hiphop since the beginning and never knew about him. I'm glad I stumbled upon this vid. I love his energy.
im 60 seconds in and without a doubt this is the best video i'm going to see in 2021. big love
I have Grover Washington's Mr. Magic CD and it has Bob James' name on it as co-producing the song.
All of these Bob James videos are great. It's great to see a sampled artist (who was once resistant to it) & the culture of sampling, have a happy ending together
Love to here his history in music & the history of being sampled.
I love Bob James , I've samples him in a few house tracks I made , his music is unbelievable, I've brought loads of his albums.
Love, love, love this guy.
Maaaan I have so much respect for him for letting other producers sample his work and be ok with it is pretty huge.
Bob, you are a legend. Good job my uncle had his record collection. Now, me, finally bought a few lps. I should have bought more.
Do yourselves a favor and go listen to Bob James "Joy Ride" CD(circa 2000) in it's entirety. It is brilliant with a who's who of big name jazz producers handling each cut. It along with Ronny Jordan's (r.i.p.) "Brighter Day" CD(circa 2000) are absolutely the pinnacle of the smooth jazz genre. This interview is priceless.
"Steady moving them keys like Bob James," I never knew about him until I heard that line from Andre 3K
At 81, this man who is 33 years older than me, is way cooler than I'll ever be! Very under appreciated artist!
What a great video. I'd really love to know more about the recording process of Westchester Lady myself (when the strings shimmer in, it's absolutely heavenly!). It's great that this music is still rendered relevant through use in newer music (though original artists being compensated/credited is a clearly important thing)
3:51 The bells are panned pretty hard, just removing one channel gets you the almost bare drums.
Damn Biz!!! You had me looking for that Mardi Gras 45 LOL
Legend 🙌
Man. I grew up as a jazz head as a teen in the 80s. I knew/know Bob James from jazz. I.had.no.idea. that he was sampled in hip hop like this. Woaw!
We must protect bob at all costs!
Thank u sir for the beautiful music and the talented musicians who helped shaped what we called Hip Hop!
Everytime I hear Bob James I wanna break out my burgandy velour jacket dim the lights pour a cognac and pretend its 1977 all over again.
Ha ha.. The year I was born!
Thank you Run DMC & Jam Master Jay for bringing us “Peter Piper”. 😎👊🏾✌🏾💯
Excellent stories and background on all this James’ history!
GENIUS.. MY FAVORITE SONG FOR SKATING health and streangth.
I love how open minded he is. I Love you dude !
these days words like legend and genius thrown too often. well there is a real one
so cool bob james collabing with a channel such as tracklib
I love Bob James!!!
Such a brilliant video. My ten year old son has been playing the piano for around six months, and has been listening to jazz, classical, hip hop and dance music since he was a baby. We were watching a video about the connections between jazz and Hip hop, and for him there was instant recognition of the jazz tracks samples 🤛🏿🤛🏿🤛🏿
This is great to see Bob James. We now just need to see vids with David Sivabeck and Parth Aldershot as so many of their tracks were sampled without credit too.
if back when Hip Hop first started copyright legislation were and were enforced the way it is today there would have been no Hip Hop, neither a few other genres
There may have been no hip hop records, but the the hip hop culture was around before the records and samples. It was out in the parks, community centers in mostly the Bronx and Harlem.
@@mikegee3991 yeah i meant hip hop music
and without the music which gained popularity and provided soundtrack to it, the culture would have likely remained local and fringe and eventually died down
Will and Jeff with the Westchester Lady sample on Here We Go Again!
Awesome artist wish he could start a program for inner city kids. Bmore loves you and will always keep your name and music alive. You Rock!!!
The wechester lady story with the luther vandross and patty Austin vocals being left out is crazy.
Bob james pure quality.
Thank you Bob for all the music
Everytime he hits those keys..WHOA!!!
A True Genius of his Times I'm Glad To Be A Fan Of Bob James And I Thankful of him So Much For The Hip Hop Jams That I love
Nostalgic. So many great songs and memories coming to mind.
Winchester Lady is the perfect example as why archiving media is soo important, that Fire at Universal Studio was a crime!
😤
Nautilus has been used so much I don't want to sample it.
But it's just too good!!
The guitar has been used quite a bit as well. But creativity knows no limits!
sick tune. i love it cause it's one of those nostalgic tunes.
Bob James - Remarkable!
This was so dope! .10 records that go for big $$$$
7:00 my fav parts are deep into the composition 😎
Thanks for sharing about those times in your life. I love all of the tracks you discussed. Please give us a decade by decade view perhaps ? might be fun? Thank you so much, I love your music so much!
Thank you so much for this video! Bob James is a hero.
Great video. Thanks for uploading this 😊👍🏾
New Edition sampled the last track with ‘Hit Me Off’ ..👌🏾
I own his records from hearing dj's mix his stuff
