Backpacking Olympic National Park // Enchanted Valley, Anderson Pass, Lacrosse Pass & O'Neil Pass

We set out to backpack Olympic National Park in mid august and hiked across some incredible scenery through the enchanted valley, Anderson pass, lacrosse pass and O'Neil pass. We did this trip over 6 days and set camp over pyrites camp, honeymoon camp, marmot lake camp, and enchanted valley. We were fortunate enough to witness 6 black bear, several ptarmigan, Anderson glacier and endless mountain views along our travels. This trip has got to be up there with the best of them in the pacific northwest.

Just want to add, there is no water source over Lacrosse Pass. Load up before you go up.

It is truly remarkable getting into the heart of the Olympics. We did this trek from Dosewalips -> Anderson Pass + Anderson Glacier -> Enchanted Valley -> Oneil Pass -> Lacrosse Basin + Hart Lake -> Duckabush. 14 bears, a heard of Elk, and 75ish mile covered made for happy souls indeed.
That’s awesome. I was debating this route as well. Now it’s on the list for next time!!! You had one heck of a wildlife tour it sounds like.

Precisely. Mid to lake august. It was worrisome how hot it was here this summer on the days it didn’t rain.
did a route similar to this we come in on the duckabush trail head. go over lacross, anderson and o`niel passes. stay at marmot lake and then drop down to big log camp and come out at staircase trail head about 50 ish miles over 5-6 days. we are planning to do this hike again in july or august! cant wait!
I’ve actually planned this exact route and plan on doing it in a few more years.

How long did it take from enchanted valley campsite to the grave’s creeks trailhead?
Really depends on your conditioning and pack weight and motivation. It’s mostly down hill coming back. On average I’d say 3-5 hours.

That's great hike. I'm in the ONP several times a year, as well as the ONF. Best outing close to home. Shhh....don't tell anyone else. 🙂

Did this hike in 1971. Stayed in the old Chalet in Enchanted Valley l. Sad that you can't stay inside anymore!
That’s amazing. I read the history on it. Seems so cool. Too bad you can’t stay in it anymore. An experience you’ll always have.
The Ranger approached our tent, pitched in what is now thin air where the Quinalt river changed it's course, And said " welcome to MY valley...I strongly suggest you stay in the chalet tonite, as the bears will explore your tent, with YOU in it". We accepted the invitation, and We left the tent pitched, and one pack , mine outside with nothing but a can of green giant string beans. The next morning, the lack was there, the tent unmolested, but the PO ack was shredded by the bears, And the can of beans had huge fang holes in it. ( The bears know what cans contain) no doubt their descendants know as well. I really enjoyed your video, it brought back warm memories. At the age of 71, I shan't be returning there.

We liked to go cross country from O'neal pass to Lake Ben and camp. Beautiful area. Thanks for reviving old memories from the 70s and 80s.

Great route! Do you need hard to get permit for this?
Just need a National park pass and a wilderness permit you can get at any number of ranger stations within 30 minutes of the trailhead. Honestly, nobody even checked us for a National park pass.
